For once, not the fault of the sentencing court. 6 months is at present still the wholly inadequate maximum penalty. I believe that a higher maximum is en route via Parliament, but how strange it is that that requires the full and lengthy process through Commons, Lords, and the Royal Assent, when the Government (of clowns) can shut down effectively the whole country via secondary (and misused) legislation, and at the drop of a hat!

As for the UK, while there were about 70,000 civilian deaths in the UK during WW2 and as a result of the war (40,000 —half of which were in London— by reason of German bombing between September 1940 and May 1941), to compare the present “panicdemic” with “the War” is absurd.
The present “Coronavirus” death toll should be compared to the post-WW1 “Spanish flu” toll, the “Asian flu” of 1958, or the “Hong Kong flu” of 1968, all of which killed far greater numbers in the UK than the total of death this year and (supposedly) from “Covid-19”. In fact, even the ‘flu of a couple of years ago exacted a higher UK death toll.

China may be able to overtake them. The Chinese have many faults and are the least sophisticated in many ways out of the East Asian peoples but they are of broadly the same IQ level give or take a few poi to on the scale as Japs and Koreans and they are resourceful and quite cunning.
India though doesnāt have a chance to accomplish the same feat. As Priti Patel and the Shahib Chancellor shows they donāt have the IQ etc of Eastern Asians.
I would say out of the peoples of that part of the world the Japs are top, Koreans second and Chinese third Japs could be now and were regarded by some in the past as āhonorary whitesā. Japs are the people I most admire out of the three.

This situation calls to mind Harold Wilson’s “Kitchen Cabinet” of the mid-1970s, run by Lady Falkender (Marcia Williams, aka “Lady Forkbender”). Wilson had the excuse that he was already showing signs of what we now call Alzheimer’s (a fact known to the Soviet government though not to the UK man-in-the-street of the time). M’Lord of Essex: the traditional schools are changing. Perhaps largely for the better. I notice that few are now all-boy or all-girl, which was the norm even when I was at secondary school (early 1970s). that may or may not be good; mixed in effect, I think.

Yes, many of the private schools have gone over towards admitting boys and girls but I think there is a place for the traditional single-sex boarding school like Eton College still.

Yes, Eton College is still an all boys school and a full boarding one along with Winchester College, Harrow School and Radley College.
Roedean School is a school just for girls and is basically like an Eton College for females with an equivalent prestige to Eton. I believe Princess Ann is an ex-pupil or she may have attended one of the public schools for girls in Kent? Beneden?

Radley used to row against my school quite often, both schools being on the Thames, one (Radley) in Oxfordshire, the other downstream in Berkshire. In fact, I should say that learning to row was one of the few things I learned at school, as against my self-education. I can still row quite well (at least I could, the last time I tried, many years ago).
