Well, I once again triumphed over John Rentoul, who only scored 3/10 this week. I always commend his honesty, though. I myself scored 6/10 this week. I did not know the answers to questions 1, 2, 6, and 9.

Labour is going nowhere. The next two by-elections (Chesham and Amersham on 17 June 2021, and Batley and Spen on 1 July 2021), should give an idea of the state of play. At present, I am inclined to think that Batley will fall to the Conservatives, and that Chesham and Amersham will result in a Conservative win, and with a Labour lost deposit (maybe).

The Greens only appeal to a very small number of people with the rest of us viewing them as the ‘Watermelon Party’ ie Green on the outside and Red on the inside. They are on a maximum of 6%!
Britain needs a different real Green Party of green conservatism as exists in Germany with their anti-mass immigration Ecological Democratic Party (ODP).

I think the Labour vote will have some solidity to it in Batley and Spen but is very likely to collapse in Chesham and Amersham perhaps to the extent it might even go down to a truely embarrassing figure like the 2% they scored in the Newbury By-Election of 1993 (a famous Lib Dem victory with a huge swing)
The Green Party had a pretty good vote share in the Buckinghamshire constituency in 2019 of 5.5% but, of course, there is zero possibility of the Greens ever winning that seat so it was then and will be in this by-election a ‘wasted vote’.
If I were a Labour voter in Chesham and Amersham I would find it very tempting to get revenge on the Tories for that loss in Hartlepool by voting tactically for Sarah Green the Lib Dem candidate.
There are only two candidates who might win in the by-election namely Peter Fleet the Tory candidate and the aforementioned Sarah Green.

As you say, m’Lord of Essex, the only hope for anti-Con voters in Chesham and Amersham would be a tactical vote, though that might well be doomed anyway, looking at past votes: even in 1997, the Cons got over 50% in that constituency.
Batley…that is hard to read. Yes, the Lab woman might still (after 5 years?) get a sympathy vote because her sister was assassinated, yes she is arguably more “local” than the others. As against that, Labour has nothing to say to white English voters now, and there are other candidates eating away at Labour’s vote. As I blogged, my head says “close Con victory” but my heart or instinct is expecting a massive Con win because Lab will be dumped, and former Labour voters will abstain or even vote Con.

On the surface with the Liberal Democrats polling poorly nationally the Tories well and with Chesham and Amersham being a traditionally safe Tory seat it looks as if the globalist open borders supporting, libertarian ‘CONServative Party will retain the constituency easily but it is a by-election and there is therefore always a potential for a shock result.
There are some distinct local issues at stake in the seat ie that ridiculous HS2 white elephant and the ‘reforms’ to planning laws so it will be easier to ruin the nice environment there and build more houses to accommodate the vast influx of immigrants the so-called Conservative Party keeps-on allowing in despite their promises to the contrary.🙄😡🤬😞☹️
These local issues could allow Sarah Green to snatch a seemingly improbable victory. I think they will get a good swing but may fall just short. They need a ‘swing’ of 14.5% to overturn the 29% Tory percentage majority.
That is a formidable mountain to climb but is not so high it is impossible to scale it. We might see a repeat of a famous by-election victory also rated as non achievable like the one in the then safe Tory seat of Berwick Upon Tweed in 1973. The Liberals won it off the Tories by just 57 votes setting a new record which still stands today.

The CON party vote share in Chesham and Amersham in 2019 was an impressive one of 55.3% but it did FALL from a higher figure in 2017. There are quite a few safe Tory seats where their share of the vote is well over 50% and in the range of 60% plus and even within touching distance of 70% as in my seat in Brentwood and Ongar in Essex (68%!) There probably wern’t too many seats either Tory held or not where it fell and then mainly in Scotland where they lost some seats in what was a good election for them UK wide.
Having said that you state that the Tory vote share in 1997’s landslide defeat was still 50% plus which is important to take notice of since even in ultra-Tory seats like Windsor it dipped below that figure then to 48% and in my seat of Brentwood to 45%. It shows how safely Tory my seat seat and Chesham and Amersham normally is at a general election.
The Lib Dems will need a direct swing from Tory voters as well as tactical ones from Labour and Green supporters to win. The Tory vote share is high but not so high it can fall a lot and still be far too substantial for any other party to win.

Apparently, the Tories under their failed Home Secretaries of Teresa May, Amber Dudd, and now the latest abject disaster, Priti Patel, have done what they normally do to ‘nice Tory areas’ and closed-down police offices in the constituency. Here in the Tory stronghold of Brentwood, Essex they shut our fine, 1930’s built, dedicated police station that was once the envy of other less fortunate towns.🤬😡😞☹️
We may not be in the same rampant criminality league of Stab City Upon The Thames (or, at least, not yet) but we still have crime and plenty of police officers and open police stations are vitally necessary to tackle it so I say to the self-proclaimed ‘party of law and order and the police’ don’t neglect your party strongholds in this way.

I have a feeling the turnout in Batley and Spen will be lower than average but not as low as the post WW2 record of just 18.2% that the by-election in the constituency of Manchester Central had in 2012.
By-elections normally have lower turnouts and this can be especially the case if the electorate perceive that the election is one that has been forced upon them unnecessarily ie that the previous sitting MP has got themselves a nice, swanky new job rather than dying.
Batley and Spen has also had another by-election within relatively recent history.

I am trying to think of by elections similar to that being held in Chesham and Amersham where the prevailing political mood in the country was comparable to June 2021.
There aren’t exact parallels. The two by-elections which might be thought of that way would be the Eastbourne By-Election of October 1990 which the Liberal Democrats unexpectedly won on a ‘swing’ of 20% in what had been a traditionally very safe Tory seat. The Liberal Democrats needed a ‘swing’ of 15% to win the seat which had a Tory vote share of 60% in the previous general election of 1987 and a Liberal SDP Alliance one of 30%.
Like now, the Liberal Democrats had a national poll rating in the single digits but the Conservative Party under Thatcher had just started to become unpopular due to the Poll Tax.
The other by-election would be the one held in the constituency of Penrith and The Border caused by William Whitelaw becoming a Lord. This was held in July of 1983 so the Conservative Party was no doubt still riding high in the national polls after they won a landslide in the general election of June of that year.
The new Tory candidate held off the challenge and won by around 500 votes. If I recall correctly the seat had comparable vote shares for Tory and Liberal candidates in 1983’s general election as compared to Chesham and Amersham’s in 2019.

The difference now compared to most other years, m’Lord of Essex, is that people now vote negatively, or just abstain. The LibDems killed their “we are not like the other two” when they became slaves in the Con Coalition.

They were not complete “slaves”. They got quite a few of their own policies through. Too many people in this country even those who take an interest in politics have no understanding of coalitions. The LIb Dems were the JUNIOR partner in that coalition which meant that they would get to see some of their policies enacted BUT the MAJORITY of that governments’s policies would, quite rightly, come from the SENIOR partner which was the Conservative Party. After all, the Tory Party had won quite a few more votes than the Liberal Democrats had in 2010.
I appreciate the fact that Labour luddites despise Nick Clegg but then when has Labour (despite being a supposedly left wing and therefore an exponent of democracy party) EVER really understood REAL democracy?🙄🙄🙄

Although I wasn’t a supporter of that government it did work, on the whole, quite well and showed that peacetime coalitions could function properly. Most people thought it would collapse after a year or so but it was a stable government that lasted the entirety of its term of five years.
The Liberal Democrats DO have a unique selling point and ARE NOT like the others in that they support a FAIR voting system of Proportional Representation which would mean that every member of the electorate would have an EQUAL VOTE WHEREVER IT WAS CAST ie an END to the ‘postcode lottery’ of safe seats and marginal ones.
In other words, they are DEMOCRATS whilst Labour and the Tories are still in the dark ages as far as REAL democracy is concerned.
I am quite surprised that the Tories don’t want to abolish even our fake democracy entirely and go back to the days of absolute Monarchy and hand back 100% control to the House of Windsor!🙄🙄🙄

As an example of the fact that someone who has Covid-19 can display just mild symptoms and be normally a fit and even a young person The Times ran a story a few months ago of a young man who is very fit and works in a field where that is an important personal characteristic ie as a personal trainer. He caught the virus at the start of the pandemic, fell pretty ill and still has quite bad symptoms months later and can’t work in that occupation because of this illness and yet as a personal trainer he is obviously very fit so even those kinds of people can get it and pass it onto others.

I have to give Tom Harwood at least a little credit in that he does acknowledge the usefulness and necessity of having very large numbers of people take the vaccines against COVID-19.
That is in contrast to too many of the libertarian extremist nutcases as these people are often against vaccination as well as being against necessary restrictions on civil liberties during a worldwide viral pandemic.🙄🙄🙄🙄
