Saturday quiz

Well, this week brings another win over political journalist John Rentoul. He scored 4/10, but I trumped that with 6/10. I did not know the answers to questions 2, 3, 5, and 9.

She is right, and about Elliot Colburn very right (except that his surname is “Colburn” not “Coldburn“). Here he is, the careerist little twit: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elliot_Colburn. Never really had a job; no profession, either.

Well, his MP-odyssey will soon be at an end. Looking at the election results for his constituency, he will be toast within a year; he will then have to get a real job, if anyone would give him one. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carshalton_and_Wallington_(UK_Parliament_constituency)#Elections_in_the_2010s

Andrew Bridgen is considered very dangerous by the System, because he is an MP, not someone opining on Twitter/X or Facebook. The System will be doing everything possible to have him removed as MP and replaced in 2024 by a Con Party or Lab Party drone who will make the “expected” noises. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrew_Bridgen.

Looking at Bridgen’s constituency, it was Labour from 1997 until Bridgen was elected in 2010. His vote-share has increased steadily since then, and in 2019 was 62.8%: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_West_Leicestershire_(UK_Parliament_constituency)#Elections_in_the_2010s.

Looking also at the present political climate, and the great unpopularity of the present government, it may be that Bridgen has as much chance as a “Reclaim Party” candidate as he would have had as a “Conservative” Party one.

Reclaim Party is a dead duck, in my opinion, but Bridgen has a high public profile, and it is just about possible that, if the Conservative Party vote in the constituency collapses, or reduces by 40%-50%, and if the Labour Party vote only increases slightly, that Bridgen might just manage to come through the middle and win by a short head. A long-shot, but just about possible.

All part of an overarching “agenda” (conspiracy).

I do not disagree on some of what Goodwin often expresses, but anyone who doormats for Israel and the Jewish lobby (as Goodwin does in that discussion, and in some of his tweets) cannot be respected by me…

Looks hopeful, as far as it goes…

I agree, in outline, with that tweet by Goodwin.

I would normally agree with that, but can think of a couple of advantages all the same. Hm, think that I shall lie doggo on that question.

About 25% (mostly over 70s).

Brits asked: “Which side in the Israeli‑Palestinian conflict do you sympathize with more?”

All Brits: Israel 21% Palestine 17% Both equally 29% Dont know 33%

Labour voters: Israel 9% Palestine 27% Both 35%

Conservatives Israel 39% Palestine 6% Both 27%

18-24 yr olds Israel 11% Palestine 39% Both 16%

Pensioners Israel 37% Palestine 11% Both 36%.”

There should be an MPs’ section (result would be “Israel 90%, Palestine 10%“, looking at how many are either bribed or intimidated by the Jew-Zionist lobby).

The true face of Zionism?

Those American (mainly) Jew settlers or colonists are far worse even than the old-style or “Sabra” Israelis.

Incredible that, in 2023, a large organization such as Currys is still unaware that “Jack Monroe” is a total fraud and “grifter”. Still, if you have ever been in any of their stores, you can see that Currys is badly-run, and only saved from being hopeless by the skills of some of their staff, who however, are rather poorly-paid (underpaid).

“Jack Monroe” runs dozens if not hundreds of Twitter/X “sock accounts”, most of which are very obvious.

Incredibly, “Jack Monroe ” now has 507 utter mugs sending her between £3.50 and £44 per month via Patreon. Each. At one time she had over 800, but that fell back to below 400 as she was exposed as a fraud. Seems that another 100+ idiots have signed up in the past few months. Truly it is said that… there’s a new mug born every minute…

  1. Hello! On a lighter note, I have just watched the latest video from my gorgeous “girlfriend” Hanna. She has visited Fortnum & Mason. I noticed a drink that you may like. It sounds very nice. Here is a link:

My wife is right: “Hanna would not even look at you: A) You can be her father B) According to British standards you are poor” (LOL) Very sad… 😭😭😭 (LOL)

Thank you. Hard to know about that rum without trying it. I used to shop at Fortnum’s when I lived in the London area (Higher Denham, Bucks, on the edge of London), but only for a few items not easily found elsewhere. Their Viennese coffee (coffee with 10% ground fig), mainly. At that time (2001-2002), I was based for a few months just off Berkeley Square, a short walk to Fortnum’s in Piccadilly.

If you like quality rum, I can recommend this one
      https://www.exclusivebottle.ch/en/rum/rum-from-anguilla/

I have had that at the place where it is blended (a very small plant and shop), and also in the UK, though you rarely see it here.

      1. Thank you very much for the information, I see you are “a discerning gentleman” or “a connoisseur”. Unfortunately: A) I do not think my palate is educated or refined enough to fully appreciate a drink like that one B) Most importantly, it is too expensive for my puny budget,

I did the conversion from CHF to Sterling and I discovered that the Swiss franc is very strong (1 CHF = £ 0.92) Therefore, the price in English money would be £ 45.00

Going back to my budget, I think I told you that the evil (and hateful) Argentinian government imposed a lot of extra taxes on anything purchased using Pounds, US dollars or Euros. This results in an increase of nearly 70%!

Having said that, tomorrow we will have elections and almost everyone is confident that these infernal bastards will be defeated; the problem is that the favourite (Javier Milei) is another Trump (i.e.: a fanatic supporter of Israel and pro-Jewish to the core; in fact he said he wants to convert to Judaism)

Thank you, but I too have a very reduced budget these days. Also, I drink rather little now, even compared to a few years ago. Many evenings (I very rarely drink before sundown), I do not drink at all. If I do, a small glass or two of Kirsch, Poire Williams, or Tokay, is about my mark now:

        https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poire_Williams

In cold weather, perhaps a glass or two of heavily-chilled vodka, and a pickled cucumber (or red caviar).

Sounds as though Argentina has politicians as lacking in integrity/credibility as those of the UK.

      3. I love your comment about Milei (“he sounds off the scale mad”) LOL

Yes, he is known for losing his temper very quickly (quicker than me!) and insulting his opponents in a very crude fashion. In fact, when he closed his campaign two days ago, when he finished his speech, he started singing and swearing like a drunk hooligan. I am not squeamish but his behaviour is shameful.

I really believe he is “off his rocker” (a lovely expression I learned from Wodehouse). No wonder they call him “el loco” (the madman) LOL

  2. Here is a very long and detailed biography about Milei (a.k.a. “The Madman”) Be aware that according to the ultra-liberal/pro-Marxist ideology of Wikipedia he is repeatedly described as “a far-right populist”, which, of course, is rubbish.

Like Trump, he has exploited many legitimate grievances and sometimes, speaks like a true nationalist leader but is all “smoke and mirrors”. Like Trump, he knows that many people sympathize with what could be described as “far-right” views, therefore he uses that kind of rhetoric to win votes. I despise him and I cannot be bothered to vote. We know the whole thing is rigged from A to Z.

      Thank you.

I was not familiar with Milei. Just read that Wikipedia entry. He sounds off the scale mad. Makes Farage, Suella Braverman, even the so-called “far right” in the UK seem mild and almost narcotic in their views.

Some “populists” are radical and achieve good things, at least in part. Mussolini for one. Others are just a waste of space. Some sit on the fence between populism and serious politics (maybe Laval).

  3. Just a legal question. I was reading about one of the famous English female cooks known as “Two Fat Ladies”; Clarissa Dickson-Wright. I remember you told me she was an alcoholic and I believed that was the reason why she was disbarred, but the real reason was “for practising without chambers”. Could you explain that to me?

Anticipating your reply I can only think that in the UK, barristers MUST belong to a “chamber” which I believe could/would be the equivalent to what the Americans call “a law firm”.

Here in Argentina a lawyer does not need to belong to an “estudio” (the Argentinian name for a law firm made up of several partners). He/she can practice on his/her own. Many of them do, they just have a small brass plate on the door of their office that reads: “John Doe, lawyer”

    1. Claudius:
I believe that Clarissa Dickson-Wright was disbarred or suspended in the early 1980s, when the Bar rules were far more strict. A barrister *can* now practise from home, subject to various conditions (a valid Practice Certificate, professional liability insurance etc). Solicitors have always, I think, been able to do that.

Likewise, if you look on Twitter/X now, you see many barristers with photos of themselves in Court dress, wearing wigs etc, and linking to their chambers’ websites. Advertising. Prior to the 1990s, that would have been a serious disciplinary offence./

The Bar, like the rest of England, is not what it was…
