One thing the local elections will underline. It’s not just that the Labour vote is imploding to the Greens and Reform. The Muslim vote, previously a bedrock, is also going to fracture and get hoovered up by a rag-tag coalition of independents. And that’s an existential moment.
I am not a professional psychologist or psychiatrist, but I wonder what such a scientific or medical specialist would make of a patient who persistently minimizes the suffering, physical pain, or trauma of others, particularly that caused directly by the said patient, while magnifying or even inventing any trauma, inconvenience or irritation —however slight— of his or her own?
On the large scale, that is what we often see in the reactions of the Jews and Israel. The quantum of deaths (many of which are plain murder) and injury caused to the civilians of Gaza, numbered in the hundreds of thousands, and involving the death or mutilation of children and even babies, and over 2-3 years, daily, is answered by the screech “and what about the several hundred Jews killed on one day in 2023 by Hamas operatives?” [and also by Israeli free-fire protocols].
The starvation of many people in Gaza, and the death by starvation of some, is answered by Jews who either deny that there ever was starvation, or who say that “people only went hungry because Hamas militiamen took all the food generously allowed in by the Israeli Jews“, or that —in various ways— it is or was the fault of the starving children themselves, and/or of their families.
Jews (both from Israel and from countries such as the USA and UK) on Twitter/X etc often delight in adding to such comments pictures of Jews having a good time at barbecues, or enjoying the foods that form part of their quasi-religious supremacist holiday festivals.
If a school or hospital is bombed or rocketed by Israeli forces, and a Palestinian Arab platoon or military storage unit is later found there, or nearby, that is enough, in “their” psychology, to justify the “slaughter of the innocents” (usually described as, when admitted at all, “unfortunate collateral damage”).
Jews in the UK etc often deny that those suffering because of Jewish/Israeli actions are suffering at all, or if they are, are suffering by reason of their own defaults, and/or that the Israeli war machine is being somehow “kind” in the way in which it destroys people’s whole lives (for example, by dropping leaflets “advising” their victims to leave home before said home is blasted to pieces, together with the families who lived there, and their possessions).

I was in the USA fairly frequently from 1989-1993 and then from 1999-2002, and I never heard or saw the phrase used once, not by American colleagues etc, not on radio or TV, not even in the Press (and I bought the New York Times several times a week).
The “Special Relationship” is a largely-meaningless phrase, and always was, really, certainly after about 1956 (my own birth year but, more significantly in this context, Suez). Something with some reality, perhaps, from about 1941 to about 1956.

That said, the by-election result is most significant for the fact that Labour was trashed and trodden down. Strange co-incidence. I just happened today upon an old email (from well over 20 years ago), sent to me by a girl law student from Plymouth, and thanking me for talking with her and answering questions she had had. She wrote that her talk with me had decided her to continue with her degree course and to go into the practice of law.
I had forgotten about meeting that girl (at an evening reception put on by a university law faculty at a yacht club in Plymouth, and to which a number of barristers, solicitors, and judges had been invited).
I just looked up the individual’s name, to see whether she was mentioned as either solicitor or barrister (I should add that her name is rather unusual). Turns out that, after starting out at the Bar, she had switched to the solicitors’ branch, and is now a partner in a fairly large UK/international law firm, specializing in corporate/commercial work.

I was just watching one of the now-ubiquitous TV “true murder” documentaries, it being called Britain’s Countryside Killers. The facts of the case were not unusual, but I was struck by the fact that one of the interviewees, an Irishman described as “Robert Giles, criminologist and author“, in talking about the case, referred to the suspect as having “been read his Miranda rights” and then, later, not having been “read his rights” (in relation to a second murder).
Now this TV show was covering a murder that took place in England. All the action took place in England. Miranda rights, as such, are a purely American matter. In England, yes, suspects are told something similar, but that is properly referred to as the suspect having been “cautioned”.
At first, I thought that it was just this Giles person not knowing his **** from his elbow, but then I saw that the film narrative (and subtitling) itself talked about the suspect having been “read his rights” and then (later) not given a Miranda warning.
Creeping Americanization, of course; in this case very ignorantly, because Miranda itself was a case in the United States, in Arizona if I recall aright, Miranda having been the surname of the Mexican or Latino suspect/defendant.

How many patients would have felt despite the pain they should take it from her? Imagine my daughter was a frail or vulnerable patient? The entire experience has been god awful. The hospital is very empty, with wards full lit with no patients in them. It’s utterly utterly shit.”]

While the picture overall is not unmixed, and while NHS care is sometimes good, it really is time that the British stopped regarding the NHS as some sort of world-beating service and quasi-religious object of devotion, and started to look at the NHS objectively, as a necessary first step to fixing the array of problems within it.
