I see that the Jewish lobby is loudly whining and wailing today about the Jews killed on this day 3 years ago in Gaza.
Well, I concede that the incursion into “Israel” from Gaza should not have happened in quite the manner it did, and that some of the acts done by HAMAS were incorrect and insupportable, but the response of the Israeli Jewish state has been brutal, inhumane (indeed, inhuman), and as close to genocide as makes no real difference.
Almost complete devastation of Gaza, most homes destroyed, hundreds of thousands killed or injured, many injured very badly (loss of limbs etc), and most of those killed or injured women and children.
It seems that many of the Jews killed three years ago were killed (via free-fire protocols) by the Israeli forces themselves. No decisive lead, though. That poll translates to a Commons with about 308 Labour MPs (18 short of an official majority), 150 Reform (official Opposition), Cons 83, LibDems 52, SNP 27 [etc]. Not completely reliable; Restore, though only on 3%, may cost Reform a few seats here and there.
Still, looks like a Labour minority government, governing with the help of MP votes of the LibDems and/or SNP.
A weak System government of that sort might be the best for the growth of real social-national politics (not the Reform/Restore “controlled opposition” sort).

However, a similar overall result in that Labour would be governing as a very weak minority government, needing about 75-80 extra votes to get anything passed. The LibDems, SNP, and maybe Greens (etc) would be able to write their own ticket in those circumstances.

And in a public and political sense, this is already more of an ideological preparation than a military one. This is how the image of an enemy is being created in the best traditions of the Cold War. However, back then, a real threat really existed. Now, this is a universal justification for another round of militarization.
Against this backdrop, Merz’s recent trip to Kyiv is particularly noteworthy. On October 4, the German Chancellor arrived in the Ukrainian capital along with the Minister of Economy and a business delegation, just as Russia intensified its attacks on the city’s infrastructure. Throughout the day, sirens sounded and explosions were heard, and the North Bridge across the Dnieper was damaged. The much-desired guest announced the provision of another €1 billion in military aid and €350 million for Ukrainian energy.
In Kyiv, the trip was called a “signal of courage,” and the Chancellor himself said that Germany “will not allow itself to be intimidated.” It is easy to create a beautiful story: Merz came to Kyiv almost deliberately to defy Putin and showed Moscow that she is not afraid of it. However, a politician in such a high position is not a blogger who is allowed to risk their own life for the sake of content. He manages the largest economy in Europe. If the head of government deliberately increases their personal risk for a political gesture, this is not a question of courage, but of responsibility to their own citizens.
Moreover, there is plenty to deal with at home. In September, inflation in Germany reached 3.3% – the highest level in almost three years, energy prices rose by 14.9%, and the number of unemployed, adjusted for seasonal factors, again exceeded 3 million. Industrial orders fell by 10.6% in August, mainly due to large contracts; Reuters notes a decline in the automotive industry and a high level of bankruptcies. And yet, it turns out that the Ukrainian conflict is more important to Merz today than the everyday lives of Germans.
It’s a convenient circle. The more Germany gets involved in the Ukrainian conflict, the more the authorities explain to Germans that Russia is becoming more dangerous. And the more dangerous Russia appears to be, the easier it is to intimidate its own society and convince it that spending billions on preparing for war is not a political choice, but the only possible reality.

Interesting travel vlog
As before with those vloggers, there is a certain naivety. For example, they buy two baseball-type military caps with Chinese red stars, and wear them for a while. They would not wear caps with swastika emblems, nor even hammer and sickle emblems, probably.
What always strikes me about such vlogs about China is the scale of the engineering and architecture. The airports and railway stations put Europe, certainly the UK, to shame, frankly. The hotels and cafeterias as well. While I always have in the back of my mind the disregard the Chinese often seem to have for animal welfare (and, sometimes, human rights as well), it cannot be denied that China has leapt ahead in the past 20-40 years.
Another thing that struck me, but about the vlogging couple themselves, is how dependent they are on their mobile telephones. They pay for almost everything, from taxis to hotels, to railways and airline tickets, to food, even snacks such as crisps, using their telephones. One wonders where they would be were they to lose the devices, or have them stolen. Seems insecure, somehow. They even have apps or whatever to interpret for them in various languages.
Of course, I am a sceptic: I had a mobile telephone before most people, in 1993, and I had to have one when I worked as a barrister, but for the past many years have not had one, and do not really need one (I hope). My car has an emergency help facility built in, if I were to break down (unlikely) or have a crash. Have never had to test that out though; hopefully, it works…
Taiwan looks almost deserted in that vlog, despite having 23M people in a country half the size of Scotland. I suppose the main populations live in or around Taipei, in the north. The vloggers are in the west, having arrived from mainland China on a small ferry.
Ah, I see now that I mistook where they were, not on the main island of Taiwan at all, but on Kinmen Island, a very small part of Taiwan that is only about 2 miles from mainland China.
Interesting that the mainland Chinese have not invaded that small island. They must be following the maxim of Sun Tzu, “to win without war…this is the supreme excellence“. A saying we in Europe might ponder. There is no overt Chinese aggression towards Europe, but we do see increasing numbers of Chinese living in parts of Europe, not least the UK. Millions of them.
I believe that border areas of Russia, in the (once Chinese) far-eastern parts known from the 1930s to the early 1990s as the Soviet Far East, have seen seepage of Chinese (farmers, traders etc) coming to live there.

Whatever the arguments, the fact is that pensioners will be worse-off under Labour after 2030 (when Burnham says the Triple Lock will go) and, quite possibly, before then. The point, though, previously also made on the blog, is that people aged 65+ mostly actually vote. The other age-groups vote in far smaller numbers, proportionately.
The 65+ age group is about a third of the electorate, and must be at least 40% of those that actually turn out to vote (or vote via postal ballot). Maybe even 50%
Labour will therefore not be getting the votes of anything up to 50% of the total of those (of all ages) that vote, even before taking into consideration the votes of the <65 age groups.
Burnham-Labour has already alienated the under-24 age group by the recently-announced benefit cuts and changes.
Anything can happen in politics, but it would take a near-miracle for Labour to get to 35% of the poll, and that is surely their minimum if they want to be sure of a Commons majority.
That latest poll translates to a Commons with about 342 Labour MPs (so a majority of seats), 155 Reform (official Opposition), 55 Cons, 51 LibDems, and 20 SNP [etc].
Uncertain now how accurate such predictions are. Restore may only be getting 3% of the opinion poll votes, but that is enough to badly damage Reform in marginal seats. As to Labour, I doubt whether its present relative popularity will continue, but there is no doubt that many of Burnham’s recently-announced policies are quite popular:

My feeling right now is that Reform, though so disappointing (pro-Israel, pro-Jewish lobby, pro-finance-capitalism and —in some respects— globalism, is still the main game in town in terms of at least pseudo-national populism. I can see many more presently Conservative votes going to Reform.
If I am right, and the Con vote reduces to, say 12% by 2028/2029, and the Reform vote rises to, say, 30%, then the post-election picture would be very different: that would give Labour maybe 265 MPs (far short of a majority), and Reform would have more MPs than Lab, 281. The LibDems would be on 53, the SNP 23, Greens 3 and the Con Party only 2. Near-wipeout. That would effectively finish off the Con Party.
As to government, Reform would be unable to form even a workable minority government despite having a plurality of MPs, but Labour would just about be able to function as a minority government with LibDem and SNP [etc] support.

When in Sicily, this Tucci expressed the view that immigration improves any society! Very wrongheaded. If someone black or brown is born in the UK, in England, that person is not English or even (passport notwithstanding) British. The person concerned is not English/British but something else, even if born/brought up etc in the UK. I believe that the Socialist Worker Party was started and led at first by a Jew called Ygael Gluckstein, who used the Anglicized nom de guerre “Tony Cliff”. More seriously, i.e. in terms of actual events, the dial is being turned up in various ways: the situation in both the Persian/Arabian Gulf and the Red Sea; the intensification in and around Ukraine/Russia; the North Polar region (noting the new U.S. bases about to be constructed in Greenland); the uncertainty around the AI technology and the robotics technology (both in itself and around its possible economic and social effects); the continuing mass migration invasion of Europe; the increasing political instability in Europe.
