I was just looking at the Betfair Politics website. At Wellingborough, Labour remain even-money favourite; Cons are at around 7/1 from 6/1 yesterday.
At Kingswood (Bristol), both Labour and the Greens are around even money. The LibDems, whom I thought would be the main challenge to any Labour upset, have drifted out to 70/1, having been 2/1 only yesterday (Cons 10/1, Reform UK 85/1).
[Update, same day: the LibDems are now back to 2/1; maybe there was an error on the Betfair site, or more interest in the LibDems— I do not know. The betting now is similar to yesterday’s market: Lab even money, LibDems and Greens 2/1, but Cons are now out to 21/1, and Reform UK to 120/1].
The betting market is an unreliable guide to the result of by-elections, but it looks as though the punters, at least, are saying Wellingborough Lab, but Kingswood either Green or Lab.
I still think that it might be fairly close in Wellingborough, despite the Bone scandals and the unpopularity of the Government, but it is obviously Labour’s contest to lose. Many usual Con voters may vote Labour purely as a protest; many will also abstain in disgusted apathy. At Kingswood, I cannot see the Con candidate having any realistic chance.
If the Cons lose both seats badly, will Sunak resign? Maybe not, but there might be enough discontent in the Conservative Party MP ranks to stiffen the backs of the —usually spineless— Con MPs, and for there to be a leadership challenge.
It is hard to see that any new Conservative Party leader could turn around the fortunes of the Cons so close to a general election but, on the other hand, it might be those MPs’ last despairing throw, hoping against hope that a new figurehead might, if not win GE 2024, at least mitigate the expected losses, saving maybe 50-100 seats; i.e. instead of Con Party ending up with 50-100 seats, they might hope for 100-150 or even more.
The sad thing about that tweet is that the tweeter seems to think that “Labour” will make a difference once it forms a government, as will probably happen later this year. All major Labour people now are Labour Friends of Israel members, and/or freemasons. Join the dots…

I do not know whether one should say that someone without enemies is of no worth, but he or she has probably not tried to change society, that’s for sure.

Seriously, and I am sure you are very well aware of that, we do not need to go back to medieval times. The punishments stipulated by the law across Europe during the 18th century were very harsh and some of them, terribly cruel.

Are you aware that, until the late 19thC, if a defendant refused to plead (Guilty or Not Guilty), a trial could not proceed, so it was lawful to “press” the defendant? This involved placing the defendant on the floor. An upturned table was held in position on top of him, and blocks of stone were added until he either entered a plea or was crushed to death. The last time this happened was not so long ago, about 1870, I think.

That really sounds (and it was) awful. Having said that, why a person would refuse to plea one way or the other? Even assuming that he/she did not know what would happen, it does not make sense. Perhaps there is a legal angle of which I am not aware…

I neglected to explain the rationale. In those days (as today in the USA and in England until 1970), most crimes were either felonies (more serious) or misdemeanours (less serious). A felon convicted of murder in past times, and maybe of some other crimes, would have his property seized by the Crown.
That was certainly true of anyone convicted of murder.
If, therefore, a defendant wanted to protect the security of his wife and children, he might, and some did, choose not to plead. He would be pressed to death but his property would not be seized. His wife and children would therefore not starve or end up in the workhouse. Harsh times…
Actually, I see now that the practice was abandoned in the 18thC, not 19th. My mistake, but I thought I read 19thC somewhere.

What charming company Labour MPs keep! Labour has always been a profoundly undemocratic and scummy party and that merely proves it. Starmer presents a dull front, and the bastard really is dull, but we are encouraged by books, films etc to think that evil people are often more interesting than relatively “good” people, so dull is often equated with goodness, but that is a false premise. Many evil people are actually rather dull, and good or good-ish people are often far more interesting. I recall seeing a tweet to the effect that “is there anyone else who has as much drama going on in their life yet is so uninteresting as ‘Jack Monroe’?” Very true. That fraudulent “grifter” is so very very dull, for all the (mostly invented) “drama” in her life. Rarely goes beyond London or South Essex, does not drive, seems to have no interest in any form of culture, or even anything political beyond the derivative “I hate the ‘Tories’, so give me money” line. Etc.
Reverting to Starmer, all Labour is offering is better administration (unproven as yet), less corruption (unproven as yet), higher taxes (probably), more money thrown at Israel, the Jewish lobby in the UK, and the Kiev regime (probably), less migration-invasion drama (because Labour will simply approve any and all applicants while the invaders are in France or elsewhere) and the same policies otherwise (give or take) as are being pursued by the present rotten misgovernment.
All the same, you just know, looking at Sunak and his sorry bunch, that they are going to receive the biggest kicking ever from the voters when Sunak finally has no choice but to call the General Election. Starmer will probably win an “historic victory” (as it will no doubt be called) in an election which many many people will simply ignore.

At least the ‘black hat brigade’ actually follow their religion which one can respect on an religious observance level.
To my knowledge they normally keep themselves to themselves and don’t generally interfere with gentile society or interfere in politics.
They just want to be left alone and study the Torah all day in their yeshivas.
I would much rather have a devoutly religious, decent, Orthodox Jew like Rabbi Beck living next door to me than one of the repellent, evil, Zionist/ZioNAZI, fake ‘Jews’.
If one of those ones did, I would have to use strong air fresher everyday outside the property and some garlic to ward off the noxious fumes of their presence!

One can be a Jew, even a devoutly religious Orthodox one, provided one shows a genuine commitment to convert to Judaism.

Hence, if I wanted to join the ‘Men In Black’ brigade near to me in Canvey Island I could do so.

I am not particularly expert in their beliefs etc, but as I understand it, the traditional or “black hat” Jews do not accept the validity of non-Jews “converting”, but the more Westernized “liberal” Jews do. At least some of them do. I knew a girl once who discovered, aged about 30, that she was half or quarter Jewish. She converted to Judaism, or was going through a process towards that, at the synagogue in St. John’s Wood Road, only about a 5-10 minute walk from where I myself lived at the time (in Little Venice). I believe that that location is “liberal” Jewish.

Rabbi Beck of Neturei Karta UK reveals on an interesting video on YouTube that YES one can convert to being a Jew even of his Ultra-orthodox variety provided one is prepared to go through the conversion process and make a real commitment to becoming a Jew.
Apparently,, if you convert to being a Reform or Conservative Jew then the Orthodox ones won’t accept you as a Jew but that is because his variety of Judaism is, as the name suggests, at the ‘truer’and more religiously devout end of the spectrum hence you would have to follow more of the Jewish religious laws and there ARE an awful lot of them.
Judaism is a very demanding religion.
I have been watching a few of the videos featuring Rabbi Beck who is a bit of a celebrity on there and they are quite fascinating.

I think Labour will get at least 40% of the vote. Even this recent trouble in the Near/Middle East and with Starmer being a loopy, pro-Israel Zionist extremist crank endorsing genocide by approving of the denial of water to Palestinians has not seen their poll rating go down to 39% or below.

Middle East events are peripheral to most voters in terms of how they vote. Not to Jews of course, but they are of course a small minority in the UK, despite their influence and money. Only in a few London and other constituencies do they exert influence by numbers alone.
Almost everyone now wants the Conservative Party out of government at GE 2024, even if many, perhaps most, people also despise or distrust Labour and/or Starmer. It is that wish to drive the Cons out that is the mood music, not anything Starmer or Labour says or fails to say.

Basically, to covert to being an Orthodox Jew like Rabbi Beck requires one to undergo a conversion process approved of by his branch of Judaism. In other words, a Reform or Conservative Judaism conversion would be insufficient.

I think the Tories will be smashed and end-up with something like 50 to 150 MPs at the very most. Infact, there was a survey the other day predicting only around 80 of their MPs would survive the cull. If that happens it will be mainly their own fault in trying to chase after the support of people who would rather slit their own throats rather than vote Tory.

I think that there remains a hard-core of elderly people, maybe 15%-20% of the electorate, who would vote Con even if they were destitute and living in the gutter. So if 15% of the vote is nailed on, the Cons might be able to gather in another 5% or so from elsewhere, making 20%. After that, the key factor is whether Labour gets 40%, 45%, or even 50%. I should think closer to 40% than to 50%.
