Stray thoughts on a hot afternoon
I have never claimed a long culinary repertoire; indeed, before I married for the first time, I lived almost entirely on cold food (whatever the season), or fed while outside my residence(s), though I did occasionally cook buckwheat kasha (quite nice if boiled then fried), scrambled eggs and, from time to time, vegetable curry.
Two marriages etc have, perhaps counter-intuitively, led me to pick up a few other recipes, such as fish pie. Today, though, I embark on something new, formerly had only at other people’s houses (often in gardens) in summer— okroshka.
Okroshka is cold soup, which if made properly is very pleasant on a hot day. Many recipes can be found online, e.g. https://www.anediblemosaic.com/okroshka-recipe-refreshing-russian-cold-soup/.
Sometimes, okroshka has ham in it, but I do not eat meat, and I think that (as with Russian or “Olivier” Salad), ham or other meat is an unnecessary extra anyway.
I doubt that mine will match examples had elsewhere, prepared by foodie people, and I lack kvass (a drink made from fermented rye bread), a usual ingredient, but I expect it will be good enough.
On this hot day, I have also been thinking about something else, namely the fact that the Starmer-stein Labour Friends of Israel government has lost control of this country in every way.
Migration-invasion continuing at an even greater rate, with an average of about 1,000 a day now crossing illegally, and a further 5,000+ coming in “legally”, as (or posing as) “dependent family”, “spouses”, “fiances”, “tourists”, “high-skilled workers” (Indians able to work a computer, medical staff etc), “students” (few ever return home), and so on.
We also have an “invasion by births”, births of non-Europeans, whether born in the UK or not.
Court system on its knees, street crime ubiquitous (in the London area). The latest wheeze is to release “some” (presumably, non-political) prisoners after they have served 20% of their headline sentence, so someone sentenced to a year will only do about 10 weeks, and a 3-month sentence will presumably be, in reality, 2-3 weeks .
If there were no non-Europeans in this country, or only small numbers, the prison population would not be about 120,000 but nearer to 20,000. In fact, if the Irish “tinker”/”traveller” element, and the Roma Gypsy element, were also both removed, the number of prisoners would fall to about 10,000.
The court system has backlogs which are getting worse. I noticed that Professor/Dr David Miller, now being privately prosecuted in the magistrates’ court by the malicious Jew-Zionist org “Campaign Against Antisemitism” or “CAA”, had his first appearance a few days ago. Trial is set for December!
In the Crown Courts, many cases starting their process now, have trial dates, in some instances, set as far ahead as 2029!
The streets, especially in London, are becoming an urban jungle.
This government has pretty much lost control. Ironic, really, because there has not been a UK government so full of control freaks since the days of Tony Blair.
Incidentally, another cold soup I like is vichyssoise. Maybe tomorrow or the next day.

I almost (but not quite) feel sorry for Penny Mordaunt. After a non-“silver spoon” childhood and youth, and some years in public relations, she became an MP at 37 (in 2010), a minister in 2015, and a Cabinet minister by 2017. By 2022, she was regarded as a potential Conservative Party leader and so, at the time, Prime Minister.

Penny Mordaunt’s two Con leadership bids ran quickly into the sand. She then lost, in 2024, her Commons seat (fairly narrowly, and because Reform UK ate into the Con vote: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portsmouth_North_(UK_Parliament_constituency)#Elections_in_the_2020s).
Now, Penny Mordaunt apparently makes an income as part-time “consultant” to British-American Tobacco, though it is hard to see what value, if any, she might bring to such a role.
Penny Mordaunt (whom, as a politician, I do not entirely dislike) is now politically irrelevant, and still seems to regard the Conservative Party as the main show in town, whereas in reality the Con Party is on its last legs. The polling says it all: Starmer-Labour is a dead party walking, in much of the country, but that does not mean that the Conservative Party will bounce back as in the past. Look at the opinion polling. The Con Party is on 16%, 17%, somewhere around there, with no sign of increasing its support.
Politically, and at only 52, Penny Mordaunt is finished, in my opinion. She has no Commons seat, and is unlikely to win back her former seat (though I concede that that might just be possible in a 3-way Labour-Reform-Con contest in —?— 2029 at Portsmouth North). I doubt that she would join Reform under any circumstances (and, to give her her due, I think that she is driven, partly, by principle as well as by expediency— but after her near-win in 2024, she would surely be “nailed on” if standing again but under the Reform banner).

All execution methods have a potential to hurt the condemmed person. Contrary to popular belief in this country, lethal injection is one of the worst in this regard not just on account of the physical pain but mentally too since it normally takes at least ten minutes to complete and can last up to 3 HOURS which is the record in America.
Kim Leadbeater and her fellow weirdo MPs want to intoduce what they call ‘assisted dying’ (in reality, doctor assisted dying or assisted suicide via the so-called National Health Service) which will involve the same drugs as are used in US executions.
The most humane method of putting a criminal to death is a well-conducted, British-style, long drop hanging. In that there is only a very small amount of fleeting pain which is over in a second or so. Before we abolished capital punishment here in the 1960’s, we had got the procedure of executing a criminal down to a fine art form:

It seems as if that evil rag that prints lie after lie after lie about every subject is disapointed that Labour are not driving enough disabled people into committing suicide as the reforms are apparently providing a ‘disincentive’ to work.

It is noticeable that in every country which has legalised same-sex ‘marriage’ a ‘gender ideology’ problem has arisen whilst in those where it has not been eg Italy (which does have same-sex civil unions/partnerships) and Japan which does not allow gay ‘marriage’ or same-sex civil unions/partnerships it has not.

I suppose so. Mrs Thatcher did earn the displeasure of the US State Department when she insisted the Falkland Islands must be liberated by the British armed forces in order to secure the right of the Islanders to live under a government of their choosing.

Yes, I was surprised to see that Penny lost her seat by a remarkably small margin. Many people have said good things about her including some Lib Dems in her former seat not because they agree with her but because she co-operated well with her political opponents and was apparently a conscientious, hardworking local MP for her constituency of Portsmouth North.

In rough figures, at GE 2024, at Portsmouth North, the result was Lab 34%, Cons 33%, Reform 20%. The intervention of Reform was why Penny Mordaunt lost. Were she a pure careerist, she would stand as Reform candidate next time, and would almost certainly win, but she has set her face against that. As it is, she tries to put a brave face on it, but she must know that both she and the Con Party are politically washed-up.

I do not think Penny Mordaunt is necesarily particularly wrong about Reform UK. I have a feeling they will be a busted flush within a year or two. Where, for instance, is the overall ideology of the party so it can frame its policies correctly? What ARE those policies? Farage is good at being a showman but WHERE would he take this country if he were PM? He seems to be going soft on the immigration question which is undoutedly the overwhelming reason people are voting for Reform UK.
Being neither Labour or Tory might well be not enough to win a general election. At the end of the day, people vote FOR different political agendas rather than merely protest against others.

Not so sure about that. In recent years, certainly since 2015, people have largely been voting against rather than for. Anyway, while both Lab and Con have policies, manifestos, promises, pledges, how many are any use, really; and how many are ever implemented in office. Look at Starmer-Labour’s record to date.
I agree about Reform now going soft at the edges, and of course I hate its pro-Israel line. A British political party should be aloof from Jews and Arabs alike.
My reading is that people will still vote against both Lab and Con. Con is looking particularly irrelevant. Labour is now almost tribally anti-British, anti-white. On that basis, I can still see Reform potentially getting a couple of hundred or more MPs; Lab may be able to do about the same, though, by reining back on the spending cuts. It may be that the next Parliament will be hung.

It’s winter here, but I’m looking forward to spring to try your Russian cold soup. It looks and sounds nice. I do not remember tasting Vichyssoise, which sounds even nicer. The Spanish have their famous gazpacho, which is also eaten cold, but I find it boring and tasteless (I must admit I never tried it). Here is the recipe:

My okroshka was…OK…no more. I am not much of a chef, to be honest. My old and now deceased Russian friend, Ig (I noted him on the blog once or twice after and since he died; he taught Russian but also translated Russian books, mostly Dostoyevsky, as in the Oxford University Press The Brothers Karamazov) made a much better one. France under the ‘force de frappe’ policy once had the full nuclear triad ie nuclear arms on board submarines, nuclear bombers and nuclear silos. The last means were a touch excessive so were phased out. The nuclear bombers were all French made as well as the submarines. The whole nuclear weapons arnaments were under exclusive French control.
In contrast, Britain’s nukes were once caried by bombers until 1998 leaving just nuclear armed submarines. Our fighter jets are not British made unlike France’s and Trident apparently requires some sort of permission to be fired so it is not under our total control.

French nuclear submarines are mainly based on the Crozon Peninsula (south of Brest, Brittany). Ironically, that peninsula is a very desirable place to live, its villas usually quite expensive.
