As hundreds of thousands of first-year undergraduates arrive in halls across the country this week, a Mail investigation has uncovered serious abuses of the higher education system.
Whistleblowers have told how courses are accepting students with such poor English that they cannot spell simple words, and who fail to attend classes as soon as they receive their first £4,000 maintenance loan and council tax exemption.
One source at a well-known university said they have seen instances of ‘whole families’ including elderly parents and grandparents enrolling on £9,250-a-year courses after being recruited by staff offering cash bonuses for new students.
FA second academic claimed that one of their students ‘who could barely speak English’ openly discussed how he was using some of his loan to build a home in Romania, while another lecturer in London said there were ‘huge concerns that some people are just scamming the taxpayer.’

It is hard to imagine anywhere, or any architecture, that cannot be improved by the proximity of a few trees, or which will not be impoverished if existing trees are cut down.
Trees have several enemies in modern Britain, not least local councils who often resent the cost of sweeping leaves etc. The “health and safety” aspect is sometimes brought into play, often unecessarily. Yes, occasionally, tree branches do fall on people or, more usually, parked cars, during storms or other periods of high wind. That is not a good reason to cut down trees wholesale.

Some readers of my blog may have noticed that a small group of (((trolls))) and nuisances on Twitter have recently been making untrue allegations of criminal or near-criminal behaviour by me and two other named persons.
In relation to the allegations against me specifically, I have already been forced to complain to the employer of one of the said nuisances, an NHS consultant. I may be making further complaint (regulatory and/or official) in relation to that person and others.
I am not a natural complainer (and usually ignore trolls and nuisances because of my belief in free speech), but was forced, by the harassing tweets of these individuals, to take action.

I should say, the degree of domestic comfort now taken for granted by UK residents of all conditions. Central heating is major, as is hot water on tap without problems (see old British films for an idea of what many had to endure before, not even 1945, but c.1970).
Incidentally, the first house in England (and UK, I think) to have central heating, at least since the days of Roman Britain, was the country house of the steel magnate, Bessemer [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_Bessemer], which country house is now a seaside hotel [https://www.beachhousemilfordonsea.co.uk/] not more than a few miles from where I myself now live. What made me laugh were some of the responses to that Goodwin question. Some cited “public housing” (though of course that pre-dated 1945), “good and reliable television” (“reliable”, yes, if that means the picture appears when you switch on; “good”, doubtful…), and of course TV never really got going until the early 1950s though it had existed (in both Germany and the UK) since the 1930s, but with only a few hundred viewers initially.

In Hampshire, each little police area seems to run its own Twitter account. Most are unexceptionable, informing the public about their work, and about arrests made etc, appealing for information, and so on. Quite useful for the public.
