In the present age, trains should be run by the State as a strategic part of the economy, and fares kept reasonably low. At present, in the UK, we are getting the worst of both worlds: high prices combined with poor services (often) and the taxpayers funding private profits.

Would seem to indicate, if typical, that Russia is losing only 1 soldier killed for every 15 Ukrainian soldiers.

There are 650 constituencies in the UK and Northern Ireland. I do not believe that any Burnham Bounce will swing (even in 2026) more than 50 of them. In any case, once (if it happens) Burnham is “crowned” PM, he will be faced with the same issues as Starmer-stein. Will he have better answers, or outcomes? I very much doubt that.

Opinion polling suggests that Labour, even under Burnham, would be the choice of only around 26% of voters were there a GE any time soon.
By 2029, Burnham-Labour, if Burnham does take over, will probably be running in the polls at around 20% at best. Will Labour try to change the rules, as they are presently doing in Manchester re. the mayoral by-election?
There is no “Parliamentary road” for us, but elections may yet be a peripheral part of the way forward.

It is a bit rich of Matt Goodwin to rightfully complain about the pathetic, simply inexcusable, overly expensive rubbish train ‘services’ run by private operators when he is a leading spokesman for Reform UK which is still basically libertarian globalist Thatcherite as UKIP was in its approach to the economy though, I think, Reform has slightly tilted away from very liberal economic views.
That privatising British Rail was wrong can be shown by the fact even the ‘Iron Lady’ herself, Margaret Thatcher, did not do it as well as rightfully staying away from putting the Royal Mail into private hands.
Most of her privatisations were sensible eg British Airways but a few were ill-advised eg water and electricity.
Some services are natural monopolies thus they should be owned by the state. One of the very few countries that have successful private railways is Japan but that is because a very large number of Japs live on a vast coastal plain that includes the major cities of Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto.

The ideal type of economy is regulated private enterprise. The vast majority of it should be in private hands with a few exceptions as you describe.
Complete ‘laissez faire’ does not work. I admire the kind of ‘developmental’ economies such as Japan’s, Taiwan’s and South Korea’s where the state had close co-operation with private business. Japan’s Ministry of International Trade and Industry(MITI) had a key role in the Japanese state gently guiding business investment and trade policies which enabled that country to rise from being a bomb shattered wreck in 1945 to being an economic superpower by the 1960’s and 1970’s.

Yes, Fiona, we in Europe can criticise America for its overly individualistic and excessive ‘dog eats dog’ society. That too many Americans have no healthcare coverage and are basically left to die on the streets if they do not have a job is uncivilised.
I am not saying the way we provide universal healthcare is ideal as there are good alternative models eg Taiwan and South Korea but at least everyone in Britain is able to access healthcare whatever the size of their bank account.

The Makerfield By-Election is a very strange one so it is hard to discern wider political trends from it. It seems as if Andy Burnham is the prime factor at work. Without him standing, Labour would deservedly lose. He is standing as an OFFICIAL Labour Party candidate so he should own all this government’s failures. He obviously has a personal vote but surely can not be THAT popular, can he? Apparently, he has done some good by improving public transport in Greater Manchester with the buses and trams ect but is also reputed to have played a part covering-up the activities of mainly muslim gang rape gangs.

I am, like many, puzzled by what Putin and his admin are not doing while Russians are mostly patriots who would ide for the country.
Here is what Putin could have done, could do and should do:
1/ Eliminate Zelensky and his close associates
2/ Target and sabotage western refineries like they sabotage Russian ones
3/ Target western tankers like they target Russian ones
4/ Strike all ways of communications between Ukraine and its western handlers (roads, rails, airports, ports).
5/ Destroy bridges on the Dnieper according to needs
6/ Keep striking Ukrainian military and energy facilities until complete surrender
7/ Stop talking to Trump until the US stops funding Ukraine, get rid of Kiril Dmitriev and replace him with a real negotiator.

Putin is trying to avoid outright war with NATO. In chess terms, he is playing a fairly subtle positional game, one based on gradual strategy to outflank NATO and the EU. Thus the considerable efforts made to keep China and Turkey (etc) onside.
I think that Zelensky must spend most of his time, especially at night, outside Kiev, as Churchill spent much of the war in a variety of safe locations outside London (such as Ditchley Park in Oxfordshire…and a very nice place it is; I have seen it).
I notice that Western VIP visitors are often taken around central Kiev, near the Foreign Ministry, but there are few ordinary citizens walking around. The visitors meet with Zelensky in the street, sometimes. Photo-opportunities inside a gilded and guarded cage.
I have myself been puzzled by the fact that the rail system in Eastern Ukraine has not much been targeted. As for bridges, maybe the idea is that the Russian forces might have use for them later, though admittedly that would be unlikely if the aim is to take only Ukraine east of the Dnieper.
Ultimately, I think that Putin wants to slowly pressure the Kiev regime until Western aid slackens and stops. He has had some success with that, but now it looks as if the UK under Starmer-stein intends to escalate matters.

I have just read the definition of a MOU, and, according to it:
It’s a formal but non-binding agreement between two or more parties.
It outlines the intentions, roles, and responsibilities of each party in a potential collaboration or partnership.
While not legally enforceable like a contract, it shows that the parties are serious about working together and agree on the broad terms.
The last part is extremely important: if it is NOT legally enforceable, what’s the point?
