Broken Britain

https://www.theguardian.com/society/ng-interactive/2026/jan/28/newton-aycliffe-county-durham-high-street-decline

“‘You’d be ashamed to bring someone here’: The struggling billionaire-owned high street that shows Reform’s road to No 10

[Guardian headline]

Six miles north of Darlington, this industrial wasteland was chosen by William Beveridge for his pioneering new town in the late 1940s. Beveridge, the architect of the welfare state, personally oversaw its creation on the site of a former explosives shed used for experiments in the war.

It would, he said, be a town of “hopes and dreams” and a “paradise for housewives”, which would be centred on a high street he named Beveridge Way.

Nearly 80 years later, this single shopping precinct helps tell a different story.

Of the 45 shops on Beveridge Way today, 23 are empty – a vacancy rate nearly four times the national average. Those that are left include a Ladbrokes, Greggs, four charity shops, four discount stores and a pawnbroker.

The banks are long gone – the closest now a 90-minute round trip to Darlington by bus – and the faded signs record an exodus of household names: Wilko, Select, Peacocks...

But one peculiar aspect is that its town centre is wholly owned by a London-based multibillionaire who is wealthier than Richard Branson.

Benzion Freshwater, 77, may be the biggest property tycoon most Britons have never heard of.

The London-based multibillionaire heads one of the UK’s richest families, worth £2.6bn, according to the latest Sunday Times rich list. His empire includes prime property in New York, Florida and London, including the capital’s Grade II-listed Africa House.

Since 1990, his company, Daejan Holdings, has also owned the entirety of Newton Aycliffe town centre.

What attracted this global property empire to a remote corner of County Durham? And why have they stayed on despite decades of decline and growing local anger? The Freshwater family have scarcely ever been pictured in public, let alone spoken to the media.

[Guardian]

The Guardian managed to write and publish that whole long, intensively-researched report (I have reposted only a small part of the whole) without once expressly mentioning the fact that the secretive family that own the entire town centre of Newton Aycliffe are Jews:

Benzion Shalom Eliezer Freshwater (born 1948) is a British billionaire property investor of Haredi Jewish descent, known for his leadership within the Freshwater Group and its main company, Daejan Holdings. He is one of the UK’s largest private landlords…In 2007 it was reported that he held 279 directorships…In 2026, a Guardian article highlighted Freshwater’s and Daejan’s name, depicting them as “absentee landlords” responsible for the high level of vacant shops in the town of Newton Aycliffe, fueling political discontentment and the rise of the Reform party…In the Sunday Times Rich List Freshwater’s fortune rose from £1 billion in 2009 to £1.6 billion in 2016,[4][7] with his net worth estimated at £2.6 billion according to the 2025 edition.”

Jewish Reform UK group

https://www.jewishnews.co.uk/nigel-farages-party-launching-reform-jewish-alliance-and-friends-of-israel-groups/

Reform UK has announced the launch next month of the Reform Jewish Alliance, (RJA) with both leader Nigel Farage and deputy leader Richard Tice scheduled to speak at the opening event…Jewish News also understands that a separate Reform Friends of Israel (RFI) group will soon be announced.

It is understood that Jason Pearlman, former advisor to Israel’s President Isaac Herzog, could be appointed as director of the group in what would be seen as a major coup.

[Jewish News]

Regular readers of the blog will know that I have been predicting for quite a long time that Reform UK, the “populist” upsurge party, has been morphing into a System party. Look at recent events: System party ex-Conservative Party “retreads” joining Reform, Farage and especially Tice going all-out to speak in favour of the Jews and Israel; and now this.

Reform UK has one use— to destroy the old System parties. The downside of that, as predicted, is that Reform UK itself becomes a System party —perhaps the only one of any size, looking a few years down the line, and even more (((occupied))) than Con and Lab.

However, Reform has opened the door through which a social-national movement can march.

For once I agree, up to a point, with both the Daily Mail and Dan Hodges, though it may be that Reform and Farage taking in the Con MP “retreads” will actually win over many former kneejerk Conservative Party voters to Farage and Reform, albeit at the same time alienating people desperately seeking an alternative, a more radical alternative.

Say what you like about Matt Goodwin —and naturally I despise his doormatting for Israel and the Jewish lobby— but it has to be admitted that he is the standout by-election candidate at Gorton and Denton. Someone of rare energy and decisiveness. If he does not win, it will not be because he has failed to try. At present, he is the favourite in the polling, and also with the bookmakers.

I myself dislike Goodwin’s pro-Israel, pro-Jewish lobby views (whether genuine or, shall we say, self-interested); I disagree with his apparent wish to dismantle what is left of the social security/”welfare” system, and to introduce an Americanized agenda even more than has already been the case; I disagree with several of his proposed solutions to “broken Britain”. However, he at least recognizes that the UK is sliding to dystopia, and needs to stop that slide.

14 words…

System scribbler Dan Hodges calls that opinion poll “madness” because —like many in the Westminster Bubble— he has not quite understood the depth of deep discontent and, yes, anger which now pervades much of Britain.

The Westminster Bubblers live in, as it might be, Blackheath or Hampstead, or Kensington and Chelsea, or now-gentrified Fulham, or wherever is quite affluent, have incomes in the hundreds of thousands (in many cases), family money too (in many cases), and have never known insecurity or poverty, or even much serious inconvenience (in most cases).

Dan Hodges and the rest thus fail to see, even now, that huge numbers of British people have just “had it” with the System parties and their ranks of careerist, moneygrubbing and treacherous clowns. Hodges etc think of Reform as a bunch of clowns, but have they really stepped back to look objectively at the utter clowns of Labour, Conservative Party, or the LibDems (such as hugely-smug LibDem clown-in-chief Ed Davey)?

Yes, Reform struggles to get beyond 35%, and is now in the modest 24%-30% zone, but that is because people are not voting for Reform, they are voting against “the others”, and against everything this country has become over the past 40 years; and against what the country is fast becoming.

That opinion poll translates to a Commons with about 376 Reform UK MPs (very solid majority), 67 Greens (very weak official Opposition), 57 LibDems, 45 SNP, 42 Lab, and 26 Cons.

Incidentally, on those figures, both Kemi Badenoch and Keir Starmer would lose their seats.

NWO/ZOG puppets. Useless and treacherous.

Why are the Iranians waiting to be attacked. They could do as the Israelis have often done, mutatis mutandis, and launch a massive pre-emptive attack on Israel, using everything they have. Dimona, Ben-Gurion Airport, central Tel Aviv, and nearby wealthy suburbs and towns such as Ra’anana.

Channel 12 is an Israeli TV station.

[“Iran Showed Underwater Missile Tunnels and Threatened the Security of the Strait of Hormuz

Amid growing tensions with the US, Iran officially showed a network of underwater missile tunnels, stating that in the event of an attack, the Strait of Hormuz would cease to be safe. On state television, the IRGC showed footage of the commander of the Navy of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, Alireza Tangsiri, inside underwater facilities, where cruise missiles with a declared range of over 1,000 km and “intelligent” guidance systems are located.

According to Tangsiri, the infrastructure was created specifically to counter American ships in the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman, and Iranian forces are ready to respond to threats “at any level and in any geography”. The Iranian side claims that it has full control over the Strait of Hormuz in the air, on the surface and underwater – a key route through which about 20% of the world’s oil supplies pass.

The political deputy commander of the IRGC Navy, Mohammad Akbarzadeh, stressed that Iran is not seeking war, but is fully prepared for it, including the ability to track ships in real time. He also warned that regional states would be considered hostile if their territory was used to strike Iran. In parallel, Iranian media showed footage of the US aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln and elements of simulated guidance, demonstrating Tehran’s readiness for a tough and prompt response.“]

By my use of Electoral Calculus, that might translate to Lab 476 Commons seats (overall majority 302), Con 68 (official Opposition), LibDems 62, SNP 13, Reform UK 4, Plaid Cymru 4, Greens 2 (Northern Ireland 18, Others 3).

What kind of “democracy” is it, though, when a party (Labour) might get 39% of the popular vote, yet get about 72% of the seats in the House of Commons (476 seats)? A strict 39% of seats would be 253 seats.

Another party (Conservatives) might get 19% of the popular vote, meaning, on strict mathematical equivalence, about 124 seats, not the mere 68 conferred by FPTP voting.

As for Reform UK, its present or forecast 17% should confer (under proportional voting) about 111 seats. The forecast under FPTP voting— a mere 4.

There again, the LibDems, with only 10% of the popular vote, are forecast to have 62 seats, almost the same as under a strict proportional allocation (65).

Can such an electoral system even be called “democratic”? Open question.

By my use of Electoral Calculus [https://www.electoralcalculus.co.uk/userpoll.html], that actually puts the Cons in a marginally better position than other recent polls, by reason of the slip in Labour’s position, but it still means Lab 466 (overall majority 282), Con 70, LibDem 70, Reform UK 4, Greens 2.

Were Labour to recover to 40%, the number of Con MPs would reduce to 51; were Labour to rise to 41%, the number of Con MPs would be a mere 42.

Penny Mordaunt is campaigning not so much for the Conservative Party as for her own political career (in fact, her career full stop, for she has no other). It seems 50-50, at best, that she will be re-elected anyway.

Labour is as dull as ditchwater, as witness its pathetic Manifesto for the General Election, but I do not think that it much matters now. The main aim of 80%+, maybe even 90%, of the electorate is to get rid of the Conservative Party not just for the next 5 years but permanently. Starmer and fake Labour will only fail to sweep all before them —by default— if something so devastating happens to their campaign that it is hard to imagine what.

Has ultra-woke National Trust been neglecting historic village beloved by Harry Potter fans? That’s what villagers in Lacock, Wiltshire, say as idyllic houses fall into disrepair.

No, they’re fed up because they believe that the National Trust, which owns pretty much every building in Lacock’s historic centre, including 88 tenanted houses and the abbey, has lost interest in the village.

The complaints come amid claims that the Trust has been diverted from its core role of preserving historic buildings, instead promoting woke educational programmes about the slave-owning past of previous owners and emphasising LGBT issues.

In the meantime, to assist in his resettlement after release, a GoFundMe appeal has been launched, and is gradually gathering-in monies for him.

Unscientific, but still an expression of Western (mainly US/US) public opinion, looking at the nearly 9,000 votes.

The very fact of part of Ukraine being a war zone should preclude Ukraine from joining NATO (under NATO’s own rules).

I think that the Americans, meaning the leadership or ruling circles, are starting to realize that they are pushing Russia too hard and that, if push comes to shove, Russia just might hit NATO states with strategic nuclear weapons in the end. No matter that most of Russia’s 6,000+ weapons might not launch successfully, or reach their targets. Several hundred could. That means every American city of any size wiped out. Don’t do it. Pull back from the brink.

Once dementia sufferer Biden is removed from office next year, there will be an opportunity for the USA to re-evaluate this whole situation, stop funnelling arms, ammunition, and money to the Kiev regime, in effect take away Zelensky’s ricebowl. The war would then cease almost immediately. Russia can have the territories between the river Dnieper and the Russian border, as well as Odessa and the Black Sea littoral. There would then be a fully-Ukrainian state west of the Dnieper, probably based on Lvov, but north of the strip of land along the entire Black Sea coastline.

“Jack Monroe” “recipes”: mix a tin of cheap sardines with curry powder, add any old bits and pieces and some yoghurt. Microwave and enjoy! (or not…).

Someone more artistically-talented than me ought to do some satirical caricatures of typical “Jack Monroe” supporters: all over 50, most over 60; the aged lesbians; the “whiteknighting” middleaged or elderly men; the mentally-afflicted; the radical LGBTQXYZ crowd; the naive and affluent middleaged women (Guardian-readers, and mostly living in France, or the English countryside); the msm scribblers and talking heads, “celebrities” too lazy to see or publish the truth. No young people, no ethnic minorities, and no-one with any working palate.

“PilgrimTucker”, with another “Jack Monroe”-supporter argument: “Conservative MPs commit fraud, so why pick on poor little stunted “Jack Monroe”, who only rips off the disabled, poor, and elderly a bit?“…not very convincing. Not true, either. Many of those tweeting or blogging about the “Jack Monroe” fraud carousel often also criticize the Conservative Party and other scammers.

“Mike Hunt” is either another pathetic late-middleaged “white knight”, or “Jack Monroe” herself under one of her many covers: see the tweet below from the same Twitter account…

Ha ha! I like the pungent reply.

Other “grifters” seem to make a living solely by tweeting “fuck the Tories” and similar fairly frequently, then begging for money for their “activism”. Mugs send money to “Supertanskiii” and others on Twitter simply for that (there are usually also tweeted-about medical conditions).

Mugs and utter mugs…

Incidentally, three days after “Jack Monroe” made up her latest pathetic lie, about how Fleet Street (?) national Press reporters, and members of the general public, were supposedly ringing her doorbell, and peering into her windows, and had even driven her out of her home (together with her son who, it now seems, rarely stays with her anyway) because “trolls” were “bullying her” (pointing out online that she is a thief and fantasist), still not one Press story has emerged about her, with the exception of the cut-and-paste “report” (pretending to be an interview) in the pathetic online so-called “newspaper”, Wales Online.

More “Jack Monroe” lies.

Many are alert to her lies now, but there are also many mugs still willing to believe whatever absolute scheiss “Jack Monroe” comes out with:

In fact, who has told “everyone” where the liar lives? I myself have seen nothing at all, on Twitter at least. It is hardly a secret that she lives in some affluent area near Southend-on-Sea (she herself has repeatedly said so), but no more detail than that.

Ha ha! Tweeter “Roly Swansea”, yet another long-term “Jack Monroe” supporter. Ticks some of the usual type of boxes: “PhD candidate; media; training; ESOL teacher; Wobbly; he/him; Poly; Daddy; Vocalist“…

Completely ignorant of both the exact case and facts thereof and how libel cases are launched and paid for, but that does not stop him from advancing an (ignorant) opinion as if it is accurate fact (and condescendingly “explaining” as if he himself is not totally ignorant of the subject-matter and as if his “explanation” is not absolute rubbish).

There is in fact no evidence (beyond the word of a long-term liar, “grifter”, thief, fantasist and fraudster) that any of that money was given to any —unnamed— foodbank as claimed).

Good grief. Imagine sending £40 a month to that fraud!

When you see how easily thousands of mugs have been tricked by one not very believable woman, it becomes clear how millions could be tricked by all the “Covid” nonsense, broadcast relentlessly by governments around the Western world.

Funny and cleverly-satirical video.

Good to know that cultural institutions are being maintained and rebuilt.

Interesting. I have blogged a few times about the day in 1994 or 1995 (I think 1995) when I visited the partly-privatized but still heavily-guarded Porton Down biolab campus in Wiltshire, UK, with the then Ukrainian Ambassador to the UK, a trained scientist who was later both a Presidential candidate and director of a biochemistry and biosecurity institute in Ukraine [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serhiy_Komisarenko].

Well, OK, but that old woman can express her views freely on the streets of (?) Moscow, and have them broadcast without repercussions. If she had been in Kiev, and had opposed the regime of the corrupt Jew Zelensky, she would probably, almost certainly, have been arrested; the interview would certainly not be broadcast or allowed to be put on social media. Everyone involved would be arrested.

So who is “brainwashed“? The Western msm is more or less brainwashing people in the UK, USA etc, though many are “thinking for themselves” and not supporting the war or the Kiev regime.

The Twitterati were all so shocked to find that there was a majority in favour of Brexit (meaning, mainly, in favour of stopping immigration), and that America voted Trump in 2016.

As I blogged yesterday, Jeremy Hunt seems to have a political cloth ear.

Goodwin’s tweet about “1950s” is not quite right though. “1940s” would be better. It is a linguistic point. The 1950s were when Britain began to exit from the terrible privation of the unnecessary war against the German Reich. The poverty of Britain was actually worse in the decade (and especially the 5 years) after the end of the war than it had been during that misconceived war. The decline in living standards during the war itself lurched lower in 1946, 1947 and did not improve, substantially, until about 1954 or 1955. The last remnants of WW2 rationing ended in 1955.

Incidentally, it is interesting to note that many poorer Brits actually had a better diet during WW2 rationing than they had had in the prewar 1930s.

Some of the (pro-immigration) replies to Goodwin’s tweet are unintentionally hilarious: idiots saying that the UK “needs” immigrants, that the UK is not “full” (despite housing covering more of our green fields daily), and one pro-invasion tweeter (one of the most vituperative) who lives on the Costa Tropical in Spain!

According to some tweets I saw, the decision was made by some black woman, by name Lorna Clarke: https://uk.linkedin.com/in/lorna-clarke-3a19b415. She, it seems, is actually the “BBC Director, Music” and formerly “Head of Rock and Pop“.

Education: Copenhagen Business School“…How odd.

That black woman who, on the face of it, knows little or nothing about serious music, made the decision. Even the Guardian has printed criticism of it: https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2023/mar/14/classical-music-bbc-orchestras-singers.

How has this been allowed to happen? Early last year, the BBC’s music review recommended an extraordinary restructure. Alan Davey, the recently departed controller of BBC Radio 3 and the Proms, ceased to have direct responsibility for the classical ensembles that are now under the control of former head of rock and pop Lorna Clarke, while [Simon] Webb, the former director of the BBC Philharmonic, is the new head of orchestras and choirs in England.

The BBC’s timing is as calculated as its strategy is callous: ensembles struggling to recover from the pandemic, exhausted from keeping the show on the road throughout, three of the ensembles without a permanent director and all contractually gagged. There is not one single champion for classical music left at the BBC in any position of power or influence. Herod has been left minding the creche.

I no longer know if the BBC is a public service broadcaster; I don’t recognise it any more, or its values. If it no longer exists to do that which others cannot or will not, then what is it for? After 23 years of constant change, the ensembles of the BBC have never been more agile, flexible or willing to adapt, and they represent tremendous value for money in the grand scheme of the BBC’s budget and our licence-fee payment.

The role of cultural patron is not optional, and the responsibilities as custodian of music ensembles do not give the BBC permission to dispose of and dismantle them without serious public discussion, not to mention honest, transparent internal debate. The values and behaviour of what we are told repeatedly is “our BBC” must matter to all of us as much as the content.”

[Paul Hughes, in the Guardian]

Apart from the actual absurdity of having blacks and merely business-trained persons in positions of power in the cultural sphere, this damage goes right back to the 1990s, to John Birt [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Birt,_Baron_Birt] and Greg Dyke [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greg_Dyke]. Those two, who knew and worked with each other, both had poor educational and —initial— work backgrounds, yet were allowed to take leading positions in British television and radio.

Repin was born on 24 July 1844 in the town of Chuguev, in the Kharkov Governorate of the Russian Empire, in the heart of the historical region of Sloboda Ukraine.[10][11][12] His father, Yefim Vasilyevich Repin (1804—1894) served in an Uhlan Regiment of the Imperial Russian Army.
