Burnham’s recent announcements will have bolstered Labour’s chances. The fact that Burnham’s announcements are mainly hot air, and will never be implemented, will not become apparent until 2027, 2028, 2029, or later. As yet, they are likely to be attractive to many voters who may perhaps regard them as something real and viable.
On that basis, a general election this year might be a possibility. However, Reform might do better than expected. It all depends on how turned-off the voters are with the main System parties.
A lot of chatter about this on Twitter/X and in the mainstream media. In fact, Labour were always likely to win it. Labour has held the seat since its creation in 1983, and the Labour vote has never dropped below 43.2% (in 2005); the peak was 70.1% in 2017, when Starmer was the candidate but (ironically) Corbyn was Labour leader. Starmer’s vote in 2024 was 48.9%. Yesterday’s Labour vote was 45.2%.
The nearest any challenging party has come to beating Labour there, until yesterday, was in the 1987 General Election, when the Conservative Party managed 31.1%.
On that basis, the Green Party 32.8% yesterday was a fairly good result, in fact, particularly in view of the fact that they only scored 10.4% in 2024.
The British nationalist parties never stood a chance. The non-white electorate in the constituency is about half of the total, and the official “white British” electorate no more than a third.
To stand in a by-election where you know that you are going to get less than 10% (or 5%) of the vote is utterly stupid, and gives the impression that you are a fringe or crank party.
Had I been the leader of any of those (conservative) “nationalist” parties, I should have boycotted the by-election and made known the reason why. In fact, that by-election is a laboratory test-tube showing why, as time goes by, there can be no serious electoral road for the (real) British people. The importation of tens of millions of non-whites has, in effect, killed not only free speech but also any (worthwhile) democracy in this country.
The main conservative-national parties standing scored only 5.9% (Reform) and 2.5% (Restore). The reason, I think, is that most of the white/English/British voted with their feet and boycotted this farce and circus of a by-election. Of course, the Americans also use other punishments or methods not used in (?) other civilized states (shackling in transit etc).
I have seen a whole group of shackled prisoners in a Federal court building in the USA. All black. According to the F.B.I. agent standing with me, all murderers, and all lifers. A very sombre scene. All other people in the wide hallway stopped as the group, all handcuffed, all hobbled, all shackled in line together, passed through in total silence. As said, very sombre, and very sinister.
Speaking personally, I was always against the death penalty, and to some extent still am, but I see so many reports now in the UK of horrible murders and also rapes etc, that I think there may be a case for bringing back that penalty for some murders and other crimes, depending on the nature and quality of the defendants as well as the crimes. At least for a period of time. If so, using some quick method, possibly sometimes in public.
I notice that, in Belarus, a father who (with his equally wicked wife) starved, tortured, and finally killed his own 3-y-o son, was sentenced to death, which has been carried out in the manner prescribed by their law— Soviet-style, a bullet in the back of the head. The woman involved was sentenced to 25 years (probably without parole); apparently Belarus, like Texas long ago, never executes women.
What is more brutal, that Belorussian bullet, or what happens in the USA? Were I unfortunate enough to be in such a position, I should guess the American method(s), and so (if given the choice) might prefer the Soviet way of doing things…

No decisive lead, though. That poll translates to a Commons with about 308 Labour MPs (18 short of an official majority), 150 Reform (official Opposition), Cons 83, LibDems 52, SNP 27 [etc]. Not completely reliable; Restore, though only on 3%, may cost Reform a few seats here and there.
Still, looks like a Labour minority government, governing with the help of MP votes of the LibDems and/or SNP.
A weak System government of that sort might be the best for the growth of real social-national politics (not the Reform/Restore “controlled opposition” sort).

However, a similar overall result in that Labour would be governing as a very weak minority government, needing about 75-80 extra votes to get anything passed. The LibDems, SNP, and maybe Greens (etc) would be able to write their own ticket in those circumstances.
In the 2021 census in England & Wales, nearly 17% of people were foreign-born (born overseas).

And in a public and political sense, this is already more of an ideological preparation than a military one. On October 4, the German Chancellor arrived in the Ukrainian capital along with the Minister of Economy and a business delegation, just as Russia intensified its attacks on the city’s infrastructure. Throughout the day, sirens sounded and explosions were heard, and the North Bridge across the Dnieper was damaged. The much-desired guest announced the provision of another €1 billion in military aid and €350 million for Ukrainian energy.
In Kyiv, the trip was called a “signal of courage,” and the Chancellor himself said that Germany “will not allow itself to be intimidated.” It is easy to create a beautiful story: Merz came to Kyiv almost deliberately to defy Putin and showed Moscow that she is not afraid of it. However, a politician in such a high position is not a blogger who is allowed to risk their own life for the sake of content. He manages the largest economy in Europe. If the head of government deliberately increases their personal risk for a political gesture, this is not a question of courage, but of responsibility to their own citizens.
Moreover, there is plenty to deal with at home. In September, inflation in Germany reached 3.3% – the highest level in almost three years, energy prices rose by 14.9%, and the number of unemployed, adjusted for seasonal factors, again exceeded 3 million. Industrial orders fell by 10.6% in August, mainly due to large contracts; Reuters notes a decline in the automotive industry and a high level of bankruptcies. And yet, it turns out that the Ukrainian conflict is more important to Merz today than the everyday lives of Germans.
It’s a convenient circle. The more Germany gets involved in the Ukrainian conflict, the more the authorities explain to Germans that Russia is becoming more dangerous. And the more dangerous Russia appears to be, the easier it is to intimidate its own society and convince it that spending billions on preparing for war is not a political choice, but the only possible reality.

Whatever the arguments, the fact is that pensioners will be worse-off under Labour after 2030 (when Burnham says the Triple Lock will go) and, quite possibly, before then. The point, though, previously also made on the blog, is that people aged 65+ mostly actually vote. The other age-groups vote in far smaller numbers, proportionately.
The 65+ age group is about a third of the electorate, and must be at least 40% of those that actually turn out to vote (or vote via postal ballot). Maybe even 50%
Labour will therefore not be getting the votes of anything up to 50% of the total of those (of all ages) that vote, even before taking into consideration the votes of the <65 age groups.
Burnham-Labour has already alienated the under-24 age group by the recently-announced benefit cuts and changes.
Anything can happen in politics, but it would take a near-miracle for Labour to get to 35% of the poll, and that is surely their minimum if they want to be sure of a Commons majority.
That latest poll translates to a Commons with about 342 Labour MPs (so a majority of seats), 155 Reform (official Opposition), 55 Cons, 51 LibDems, and 20 SNP [etc].
Uncertain now how accurate such predictions are. Restore may only be getting 3% of the opinion poll votes, but that is enough to badly damage Reform in marginal seats. As to Labour, I doubt whether its present relative popularity will continue, but there is no doubt that many of Burnham’s recently-announced policies are quite popular:

My feeling right now is that Reform, though so disappointing (pro-Israel, pro-Jewish lobby, pro-finance-capitalism and —in some respects— globalism, is still the main game in town in terms of at least pseudo-national populism. I can see many more presently Conservative votes going to Reform.
If I am right, and the Con vote reduces to, say 12% by 2028/2029, and the Reform vote rises to, say, 30%, then the post-election picture would be very different: that would give Labour maybe 265 MPs (far short of a majority), and Reform would have more MPs than Lab, 281. The LibDems would be on 53, the SNP 23, Greens 3 and the Con Party only 2. Near-wipeout. That would effectively finish off the Con Party.
As to government, Reform would be unable to form even a workable minority government despite having a plurality of MPs, but Labour would just about be able to function as a minority government with LibDem and SNP [etc] support.

I happened to see a travel show presented by an American of whom I had not previously heard, one Stanley Tucci [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stanley_Tucci]. Apparently a well-known film-maker and actor (well, I cannot know everything…). A New Yorker whose grandparents or great-grandparents emigrated from Calabria to America before the Second World War or, possibly, before the First World War.

The programme showed him in Tuscany, then in Sicily. Mostly about the Italian regional cuisine(s). Not terribly dull, though hardly riveting, but of course this is an area covered many times in similar vein (think Rick Stein, Jamie Oliver, and many others).
When in Sicily, this Tucci expressed the view that immigration improves any society! Very wrongheaded. I was born in England of two English parents (and am believed —plausibly but not definitely— to have one German great-grandfather). I am, and have every right to call myself, English.
My wife is English, born of two English parents (one Norwegian grandparent). She was, however, born in the 1950s in the then Tanganyika (now Tanzania), which at the time was a British colony. She came to the UK (to live) aged 14. That does not make her “Tanzanian”, or African!
If someone black or brown is born in the UK, in England, that person is not English or even (passport notwithstanding) British. The person concerned is not English/British but something else, even if born/brought up etc in the UK. Someone such as Kemi Badenoch, who was born in London of 1981 of two Nigerian parents (while they were on a flying visit to make sure that she was born in the UK, which fact —at the time— gave her, under English law, the right to a British passport later in life).

About a third of the electorate (not the whole population 0-100) is now aged 65+; probably 40% or more are aged 60+. In other words, it can be inferred that a very high percentage of those aged 60+, and almost all of those aged 65+, oppose dumping the Triple Lock. These are the people who always vote (admittedly, I myself am an exception). If 28% of eligible voters are against dumping the Triple Lock, then probably about 40% of voters who are actually going to vote oppose these proposals.
I think that Labour will find that much of their support among the over 60s, maybe also over-50s, will fall away now. Why? Because those getting or about to get the State Pension are really interested in what happens to the Triple Lock, whereas younger people, whatever their views, are naturally not going to be so interested, so their approval of Burnham’s plans is not very important politically, electorally; they have other issues of importance to them.
One point to bear in mind is that the official inflation figures do not reflect the real state of play. Inflation is usually far higher than the official figures suggest, and that particularly applies to the staples that poorer people, and many pensioners in particular, buy regularly.

Russia has maybe 7,000 nuclear weapons of various types, while the UK has, it is said, between 150 and 200, of which maybe 50 are potentially in play at any given moment. The Whately woman seems not to understand that, once social security/”welfare” money is paid to an unemployed (or other) person, that money becomes the property, the money, of the payee as soon as it is paid over, just as the Whately woman’s pay and MP expenses is hers to use as she sees fit as soon as she receives it.
Someone with so little understanding of basic law and custom should not be an MP, let alone anywhere in government.
As for the lady herself, her own work background is far from impressive, and she is married to the CEO of an energy company, so has never had the slightest struggle financially. They own 2 or 3 houses.
