Diary Blog, 23 November 2022, including a brief overview of the upcoming City of Chester by-election

City of Chester by-election

I was going to publish a separate piece about the upcoming by-election, but have decided that that would not be merited.

Chester, as a settlement, has a history going back to 79 AD, when it was established as a Roman fortress: see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chester.

The City of Chester constituency also has a very old history, going back to the times of Henry VIII. In modern times, meaning 19th/20th centuries, it has mostly been a Conservative/Unionist seat, though electing Labour Party candidates in 1997, 2001, 2005, 2015, 2017, and 2019. Two Labour MPs in that time, with a Conservative in the years 2010-2015: see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/City_of_Chester_(UK_Parliament_constituency).

The by-election will be held on 1 December 2022, 8 days from today, and is the first by-election in the constituency since 1956.

The MP from 2015 to 2022 had to resign by reason of sexual scandal.

The candidates declared are: Conservative, Labour, Liberal Democrat; also, Reform UK, Green, Freedom Alliance, UKIP, Rejoin EU, and the inevitable Monster Raving Loony.

This is likely to be a straight fight between Lab and Con, looking at previous elections. The LibDems have in the past scored as high as 21.9% (in 2005); since 2010 they have always received less than 10% of the vote (6.8% in 2019), and have never managed better than 3rd place (even in 2005).

Labour, nationwide, is clearly on a roll at present, if only by default. The latest YouGov poll (on 17 November 2022) of (UK-wide) voting intention put Labour on 48%, Conservative 25%, LibDem 10%, and both Green and Reform UK on 5%.

Despite the scandal attaching to the former MP, I cannot see that affecting the result. As a matter of fact, both Con and Lab are putting up female candidates, though that may be co-incidental.

There seems little to prevent Labour winning this by-election, and winning it easily. Not only is the present Con government extremely unpopular, but Labour has, after all, won in this constituency the past three times, and held it for 20 out of the past 25 years.

I cannot see the LibDems getting far here, even as some kind of unfocussed protest vote. As for Reform UK, the only other contender of interest, they may or may not save their deposit. I could see them, just about, getting 5%; I cannot see them getting 10% or more, especially now that Brexit is not so popular, having been badly mishandled over the past 6 years.

The main interest in the contest will be in the percentage(s) of the vote received by the two main contenders.

The crowdfunder below seems to be a worthwhile appeal:

As people now say, “based“. Talk about sang-froid

I have been to Moscow twice, in 1993 and 2007, and I have to say that the keyword that comes to my mind is “inconvenient“…

Looks as though the “Jack Monroe”/”Bootstrap Cook” star is rapidly waning.

The above tweet was about the “@GuardianLive” tweet featuring “Jack Monroe” as booked to appear on a podcast event in early 2023, which tweet has now been deleted. Now we hear that that podcast itself has been axed.

Seems that “Jack Monroe” is, as predicted, becoming “mad, bad, and dangerous to know“…

Even so, the 667 “mugs” on Patreon are, as of today, still giving her their monthly donations for doing absolutely nothing except maintaining her lifestyle, e.g. buying herself luxury goods. Somewhere between c.£2,300 a month and (at maximum) £40,000 a month. In reality, probably about £6,000, at an educated guess. In cash (minus Patreon fees), and every single month. All that and she still poses as a “champion of the poor“! Hard to believe that so many people are so very gullible; yet they have been told now for three or four months that they are just wasting their money.

As said previously on the blog, I myself have no objection to Scotland declaring faux-“independence”, but those voting for it must accept lower living standards, and an end to UK subsidy.

As the tweeter says, just look at them! Can they really bring Scotland a new dawn? I think not.

As for Nicola Sturgeon, she is a ghastly little would-be dictator with no interesting ideas (that I have seen).

The flotsam and jetsam of the world is assisted to come here, destroying our society, and is kept in comfort (most of them), while British people suffer. Not only mad, but also evil. [Coudenhove-Kalergi Plan].

Whatever the relevance of that, can anyone look at those uninspiring people and imagine that they will be able to usher in a new age of prosperity and enlightenment in Scotland?

In any case, it seems that Scotland is still split about 50-50 on “Independence”, with possibly more wanting to retain the Union.

However, even if there were a small majority for “Independence”, would that be valid, really? To drag the other, say 45%, into an unwanted break with England and the other regions or countries? After over 300 years?

Of course, the absurd playground taunts of the two sides in the present conflict (“you are the ‘Nazi'”; “no, you are the ‘Nazi’“) are just silly.

Actually, the German Army in WW2, despite the pitiless nature of that war in the East, behaved well, mostly, in Ukraine, certainly better than the Red Army. Most atrocities were committed either by the Red Army (or by the forces travelling alongside them— the NKVD and, latterly, Smersh), or by Ukrainian auxiliaries under overall German command, or by Ukrainian civilians who just wanted to eliminate Jews, and who acted without either order or permission.

I have blogged in the past a few times about how I met, in or about 1995, the then Ukrainian Ambassador to London, H.E. Ambassador Komissarenko [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serhiy_Komisarenko], a biochemist by training, who went with me and his Scientific Attache in the ambassadorial limousine to Porton Down, Wiltshire [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Porton_Down], to meet a scientific team based there. He later headed a major such laboratory in Ukraine, I think not far from Kiev.

That Freya Vass person is a grade A loony. I have seen her tweets (in support of “Jack Monroe”/”Bootstrap Cook”) previously.

Exactly. On examining the evidence, I have gone from mildly-supportive to neutral to very critical.

Some of the fantasies or lies of the “Bootstrap Cook” have been worthy of Walter Mitty, Billy Liar, or Baron Munchausen. See: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baron_Munchausen; https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Billy_Liar; https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walter_Mitty.

The “Covid” hysteria, “lockdowns”, “working from home” in the barely functioning NHS, maladministration, and then the huge and unwanted influx of non-white migrant-invaders and other immigrants over the past many years.

Once again, in the intervening year, several tweets reposted have been expunged via Twitter censorship.

Not very literate but, once deciphered, “Rachel’s” tweet is more or less my view, though I am far more sceptical about the competence of the Russian General Staff and Russian intelligence orgs, and far less willing to accept the brutal way in which this whole invasion is now being carried out, in terms of civilian harm done.

Old v. young, Ukrainian v. Russian, nostalgia for socialism v. misty optimism about finance-capitalism. Sounds like a very limited foreshadowing of Rudolf Steiner’s “War of All against All” prophecy.

Zelensky is trying to browbeat NATO into winning this war for him, in effect. Also, his assertion that Russia somehow menaces the eastern states of Europe is not very credible: after all, the whole world has seen how Russia has struggled to beat down shambolic and corrupt Ukraine, and has still not managed to do that.

“Ukraine is the new Covid”, for the transnational conspiracy.

Climate change narratives, Covid lies, facemask nonsense, “Black Lives Matter” nonsense, Ukraine (Zelensky) partisanship etc— for the transnational conspiracy, “all roads lead to Rome“…

…or Jewish lobby/Israel lobby puppet.

I blogged recently about how I once accompanied the then Ukrainian Ambassador to the UK, Mr. Komissarenko, to the main UK “bio-lab”, at Porton Down, Wiltshire; about 27 years ago, though.

Britain, 2022

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-10651449/Soldier-cleared-raping-colleague-told-court-liked-rough-kinky-sex.html

Notwithstanding the very sluggish Russian invasion of Ukraine, are we really expected to believe that the British Army could perform adequately now?

Zelensky

A profile in the Italian edition of Vanity Fair magazine (in an imperfect translation):

WHO IS THE REAL ZELENSKY?

Who really is the Ukrainian comedian who became the beniamino of the western press and decanted as a hero on the covers of our weekly and in our News?

Who is the character that showed up in military uniform last Saturday in Florence between the applause and ovation of the PD armed Pacificist Square?

We know that he was born in 1978 from a family of Jewish origin and that his first language is not Ukrainian, but Russian.

He chooses his career as an actor and a comedian, founded the Kvartal 95 Studio and produced the Telenovela “Sluha Narodu” (Servant of the People) in which Zelensky himself plays any man who is tired of the political corruption that rages in Ukraine, see you One unexpectedly elected president.

It seems that Igor Kolomoyskyi – powerful businessman with the triple Ukrainian, Cypriot and Israeli passport, US trustee and Ukraine’s main oligarch – watching the popular telenovela comes the magnificent idea of turning fiction into a king height and making comedian Zelenzky play the part of the President not only in video but also in reality.

Immediately after Zelensky announces the foundation of a party that has the same name as the popular telenovela: “Servant of the People” and, at the peak of its popular television, announces its candidacy for the presidential elections of the year s occasionally.

From then on, its company, Kvartal 95, will register an abnormal flow of funding, run through off-shore based tax havens, for a sum of $40 million.

Zelensky’s main subsidizer of the campaign is really the [Jew] oligarch Kolomoyskyi, owner of PrivatBank, the largest bank in Ukraine, involved in several cases of fraudulent banking and illegal investments.

Igor Kolomoysky was one of the main sponsors of some of the neo-Nazis and ultra-nationalist paramilitary groups that in 2014 produced the coup that overturned President Janukovic’s legitimate government by initiating 8 years of instability and civil war in the region.

In April 2019 Zelensky newly elected President immediately provides to distribute government duties to the members of his company, the Kvartal 95.

Ivan Bakanov, already CEO of the company, becomes the head of the Secret Services, while Vice Director Serhiy Shefir becomes the official spokesman for the president.

Oligarch Igor Kolomoysky, the godfather and sponsor of Zelensky, has strong economic interests on the Donbass, which is why his private army of Neo-Nazist organizations, partly framed in the Ukrainian Army, has been eradicated about 16 since 2015 a thousand russophones to silence from the international community.

This is also the reason why Zelensky at the peace negotiations rejects Russian requests for recognition of the Donbass People’s Republics and is willing to continue the war by any means, trying by all means to involve NATO and extend it to the rest of Europe.

According to what appeared in the Pandora Papers and reported by “The Guardian” of October 3, 2021, Zelensky holds shares of three off-shore companies, has ties with several oligarchs from which he receives illegal funding and billionaires in revenue and is c straight wrapped around guns and money ai Neo-Nazis.

In the light of this and its declared interest in joining Ukraine to NATO, placing American missile bases on the borders of Russia, invoking the no-fly zone and the use of an atomic bomb, one is asked if the Ukrainian president is truly the hero that the European media is representing.

We wonder if the politicians and western media really realize what kind of business and corruption are hiding behind this shameless character and how much they are risking us to hide the war delusions of this unbalanced affair. “

[from Vanity Fair magazine]

The Ukrainian “neo-Nazis”, of course, the few genuine ones, are just being played, as are most of the others in this rather serious game.

Incidentally, take a look at the “usual suspects” on Twitter— the pro-Israel tweeters are all tweeting heavily about Ukraine, and every single one of the bastards is pro-Zelensky…

Usual suspects“? The ones that were/are all pro-facemask nonsense, pro “Covid” “vaccination”, pro-“lockdown” shutdown, anti-Corbyn etc…

Every. Single. Time.

Without commenting on the reported case specifically, it seems clear to me that the police, CPS, and maybe judges too, are getting pretty tired of the “CAA” Israel zealots desperately seeking to find “antisemitism” everywhere (and trying to pretend that it is a serious “problem”).

The small but well-funded “Campaign Against Antisemitism” is a tiny group of obsessives, stalkers, and snoops. A few dozen Jews, out of about 300,000 Jews in the UK.

They have been trying to have me prosecuted for a decade now (even before the CAA’s official foundation): see, for example (not a full list by any means) https://ianrobertmillard.org/2017/07/09/the-slide-of-the-english-bar-and-uk-society-continues-and-accelerates/; https://ianrobertmillard.org/2017/07/13/when-i-was-a-victim-of-a-malicious-zionist-complaint/; and, most recently, https://ianrobertmillard.org/2022/01/15/diary-blog-15-january-2022-including-an-outline-of-the-failure-of-the-latest-jew-zionist-attempt-to-prosecute-me/

I sense, though it is only my impression, that the police, CPS, many MPs, even the largely (((controlled))) mass media are getting pretty tired of this constant Jewish-Zionist and/or pro-Israel whining, the attempts to bully people, the contrived and/or false accusations against people etc.

In fact, I notice that quite a few of the trolls and plotters who have targeted me over the years are, shall we say, “not doing so well” these days. “The stars in their courses fight on the side of the just” [ancient Chinese proverb].

[“Get down there, where you wanted to send me, you unclean spirit!“]

See also: https://ianrobertmillard.org/2019/07/18/theyre-coming-to-take-me-away-ha-ha/. Sadly, the recent intensification of quasi-police-state censorship on (and by) Twitter has resulted in blank spaces where some of the most amusing tweets used to be seen until very recently.

Incidentally, that CAA “report” on the Nicholas Nelson case portentously refers to “a new legal device” developed by them to unmask anonymous trolls etc. In fact, their “new legal device” is a Norwich Pharmacal order [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norwich_Pharmacal_order], the first of which was granted in 1974! In fact, I remember learning about them when I was a Bar student in 1987-88. The development of such orders had nothing to do with the CAA, which was only established in 2014, forty years later…

The only “new” thing (actually, not so new anyway) is that the CAA has used that type of court order to unmask an “anonymous” Internet “troll”. I myself thought, but some years ago, of doing the same, to unmask and locate a few of the would-be “anonymous” (pseudonymous) Jew-Zionist and “antifa” trolls who pollute Twitter; sadly, to date, I have no money with which to undertake such a ratissage, not as yet, anyway.

In fact, even the use of such a court order in relation to Internet activity is not new, having been used against or in relation to Facebook and Google as long ago as 2008 (see, e.g. that Wikipedia article).

Looks as though a certain self-promoting and Israel-resident lawyer may have been been telling “porkies” once more,…

So (((typical)), such self-promotion (and such falsehood, as well).

No detail as yet as to whether the deceased was “vaccinated”, “boosted” etc, but the chances are that he was…

We hear that Ukraine and, indeed, Russia, are corrupt. Very true. So is, pretty much, all of Africa and South America, and much of Asia. How though, can we say anything about those places, when the UK has become as, if not more, corrupt over the past few decades?

Incidentally, Michelle Mone, instant “baroness”, is known for nothing but self-promotion and for having started a lingerie company that crashed in the end, but by that time she had managed to promote herself as a “self-made” “entrepreneur” or entrepreneuse.

A dishonest woman, in my opinion, who is, again in my opinion, little better than a fraudster. Despite now being married to a billionaire, she still wants to grab hundreds of millions, regardless of ethics.

If the UK ever has a real revolution, criminals like her will be the trigger.

Part-Jew “Conservative” David Cameron-Levita made her an instant “baroness”. Pathetic.

What a contrast to shameless and fraudulent fake “baroness”, Michelle Mone…

Still clapping, idiots?

On this day a year ago

Increasingly, in looking at blog posts both recent and old, I notice blank spaces where embedded tweets or YouTube videos used to be. Censorship is increasing, and the Jewish-Zionist element is behind most of it, yet we still see, in the msm, how “free” we are to express ourselves compared to people in, say, Russia. Really? Soon there will be no difference at all.

Tweets seen

To look at it another way, it seems clear that the Ukrainian civilians are not much in fear of the Russian Army, as such. You could not imagine such a protest happening (under any of the combatants) in, say, Syria, or Afghanistan, or even in the Balkans during the 1990s civil war.

Judging purely from that one view of the centre of the town, the destruction reported upon seems to have been limited.

Remarkable— a young man who has apparently never heard of the Second World War, or the Korean War, or the Vietnam War (etc)…

Time moves on

I was just looking at a Wikipedia article concerning a tracked vehicle used by the German Army during WW2, and designed to deal with the poor or non-existent roads on the Eastern Front, especially in Soviet territories: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raupenschlepper_Ost.

[WW2: German RSO towing a howitzer, possibly in the Balkans]

I was also struck by the following photograph from 1943, showing such a vehicle (perhaps the same individual vehicle) in Skanderbeg Square, the central point of Tirana, the capital of Albania:

[Skanderbeg Square, Tirana, 1943]
[same view, same date, but from a slightly wider perspective]

Below, a view from 1963:

[Skanderbeg Square, Tirana, in 1963]

…and from 1988 (note that, even in 1988, traffic in Tirana was all but non-existent):

[Skanderbeg Square, Tirana, 1988]

…and an aerial view taken in some more recent year:

[Skanderbeg Square, Tirana]

In fact, that square was only constructed or laid out in 1917, by some Austrians. A 1923 postcard view of Tirana shows a small town (about 10,000 inhabitants)

[Tirana, 1923]

Quite a contrast with the 2015 photograph below (population about 600,000):

[Tirana, 2015]

At time of writing, it is uncertain whether the great cities of Russia, Europe, and North America will still exist in a year’s time, or in ten years’ time. All one can say is that humanity will weather the storm and, if need be, eventually rebuild.

As to Albania, I myself have only seen it from outside, and only twice: once in the mid-1980s, across the narrow strait from North-East Corfu; the second time in 2001, while driving right on the border, in the mountains of Northern Greece.

Typical of “the type”…

Look at Twitter; all the Zionist Jews that I have seen on there are in favour of “confronting” Russia, and many seem quite sanguine about the possibility of nuclear war. Likewise, they all supported the attacks on Libya, Iraq and the rest. Also, needless to say, the brutal attacks on Gaza, arguably the number one recent example of advanced weaponry used on a completely defenceless civilian population.

Most of the (((cheerleaders))) for attacks on Gaza and elsewhere do not even live in Israel but in London, New York, Los Angeles etc.

Now, suddenly, they pose as great humanitarians.

As previously said, hard to believe that anyone really takes their views from that Tom Harwood person. If he were more important, I suppose he could be called “controlled opposition”.

I myself have never watched GB News, not even once. I see that the average viewing figure is somewhere between 10,000 and 30,000 people; rock-bottom in TV ratings terms.

I have already blogged about my 1994 or 1995 (I think 1994) trip to the UK biological research station at Porton Down, Wiltshire, in company with the then Ukrainian Ambassador, Mr. Komissarenko (a trained biochemist).

Exactly, or at least the UK never left the NWO/ZOG matrix. The EU is part of it, the USA is part of it. The UK formally left the EU, but is tied into it and the NWO in many ways, and also tied to “American” (NWO/ZOG) power.

The proportion of white Northern Europeans in the world is still dropping fast. Something has to come to redress the balance and the damage. Only the European can give the world a decent future.

Incidentally, Russia is part of that, in the wider sense. Just as the Northern Europeans took in the essence of the Graeco-Latin culture, and later built their own upon that, the Slavs have been and are taking in our Anglo-Saxon/Germanic culture, and will eventually create a completely distinct higher culture of their own. That applies to Russia especially.

Unfortunately, the “Covid is the new Black Death” idea, pushed by two years of relentless propaganda, has embedded itself in the thinking of part, perhaps a majority until recently, of the UK population; the same elsewhere. In fact, to unravel the nonsense is even more difficult than cutting through the “holocaust” “gas chambers” narrative —which many still believe as gospel— because of the apparent complexity of statistics, clinical evidence etc surrounding the basic core of the “Covid” narrative.

I happened to be in the local Waitrose about 2 days ago, and there were at least two people I saw still wearing facemasks! Admittedly, that was only a small fraction of all those in the store.

Ha ha! “Against stupidity, the gods themselves struggle in vain” [Schiller, Die Jungfrau von Orleans]

How many will the Queen, Prince Charles, and the thick princelings, be personally accommodating?

Homeschooling is better, and (contrary to what many believe) not illegal in the UK.

https://www.gov.uk/home-education

When I was still a practising barrister in London, I was trying, around 1995, to get funding and support for an EU-award-winning project to make fuel out of biomass (I called it “gold out of straw”). I approached, to that end, two embassies, the Ukrainian and the Cuban.

Both Ukraine and Cuba had large amounts of biomass normally burned or left to rot, the unwanted surplus from agriculture (in the case of Cuba, mostly sugar-cane, in the case of Ukraine from grain crops, mostly wheat). Both countries needed fuel. Also, both countries were replete with scientifically and technically-trained people.

The Cuban Embassy ignored my letter, i.e. were useless bastards who deserved to wither on the vine (as they have done since); the Ukrainian Embassy was more interested. I was invited to meet, at first briefly, the then Ambassador, at the Embassy, which was then in Notting Hill (somewhere in the Holland Park area now).

The Ambassador, a Mr. Komissarenko, who now has his own Wikipedia page [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serhiy_Komisarenko] turned out, by lucky chance, to be a biochemist by training. He was a rather charismatic character (a former Deputy Prime Minister, who even had Presidential aspirations), and was very interested in visiting the British biological research (and “germ warfare”) laboratories at Porton Down, Wiltshire, which (partly-privatized) was the location of the lab and offices of the “gold out of straw” project.

A week or so later, I travelled with the Ambassador, his Scientific Attache, and a driver, to Porton Down. His driver, in a Lexus limousine, made the most of diplomatic immunity, running red lights from Notting Hill to outer London, then cruising at top speed down the A303. I thought that we must be going below the speed limit, so smooth and quiet was the ride, until I looked at the speedo— over 130 mph. We made Porton Down, on Salisbury Plain, a distance of about 90 miles, in about 40 minutes. Lexus make good cars.

After an initial hiccup at the sentry post, when the Ambassador, of all people, was not on the guards’ list, we entered the huge area, and the Ambassador was introduced to the main scientist on the Project, an elderly, gruff —and in fact hard to talk to— North Country boffin, Professor Someone-or-other, and the rest.

Anyway, an interesting day all in all, with a late pub lunch after we were checked out, and animated discussion between the Ukrainian and British or British-Iranian sides (one scientist, whom, with his brother and mother, I in fact knew personally, was one of a family that had fled Iran in the 1970s, the Ayatollahs’ regime having hanged the head of the family).

Porton Down is in a heavily military area. We were just starting to head back to London, down some country lane, when a British Army patrol, in full combat gear and camouflage cream, encountered us. The soldiers immediately went down on one knee. The officer then waved us on.

In the end, the project was at too early a stage for the Ukrainians. They wanted something more or less ready to begin producing on an industrial scale, so nothing came of it (and I missed out on what might have been a big fee). Still, interesting.

I saw some time ago from Wikipedia that Komissarenko was, perhaps still is, head of a biochemical institute in Ukraine. Ukraine seems to have a number of such institutes and laboratories. I wonder what they all do.

That nincompoop should be asking himself why Britain should risk nuclear war with Russia for the sake of a Jew-ruled bandit state.

The Second World War was triggered when Germany invaded the territory of Poland (as did the Soviet Union), Britain and France having given Poland worthless guarantees that would be activated upon such invasion.

Britain and France could not save Poland from invasion, or be in any way involved in the matter, but those “guarantees” still meant that a world war was triggered.

In fact, without going into tiresome detail, the German invasion was partly the result of 20 years of Polish provocations.

Now we see, once again, Poland provoking matters, this time by having decided to supply Ukraine with fighter aircraft.

Many of Ukraine’s airfields are out of commission by reason of Russian attack. Will such aircraft now take off from and later land in Poland, having attacked Russian forces? What happens if Russian forces attack those bases in Poland? Poland is a NATO member now. Will NATO then take up arms against Russia?

This whole situation is in danger of sliding toward world war. Look at the deadheads in control in the UK, USA etc. I do not necessarily exclude Russia, not after this botched invasion that has trashed Russia’s reputation worldwide. The GRU and Russian Army need a profound reorganization.

Anything could now happen.

Hard to know what to make of the rumours that US Navy Seals and/or Delta Force are about to take the Jew Zelensky to safety in Poland, Lithuania, or elsewhere. Maybe. Certainly Zelensky is key. Were he to be captured or killed, the Russians would probably be able to take and hold Kiev more easily.

There is beginning to be a grim inevitability about events, which brings to mind 1939 and 1914.

I saw some idiot on a bicycle yesterday, fully masked in the cold wind. These “mask remainers” are mentally-ill, basically.

Quite. Most “British” athletes are now blacks. In fact, the “holy football” in the UK is now, mostly, “my blacks can beat your blacks”.

.”..and so administration slowly collapsed in Britain” [possible extract from a history book, hundreds of years from today].

At best, a useless millstone round the neck; at worst, hostile and even dangerous. We don’t need them, and don’t want them.

The very idea that Boris-idiot is more than a loudly trumpeting bystander in world events is not even worth discussing.

Castro and Cuba

I had no intention of writing about Cuba or Castro following the recent death of “Fidel”. However, the public and mass media reaction, much of it an outpouring of adulation and “me-too” faux-liberal compromise, has impelled me to write.

There is no doubt that Cuba before Castro was corrupt and, for many, poor. Before Castro there was Batista and before Batista, Prio (Carlos Prio Socarras), of whom the British historian Hugh Thomas wrote, memorably, in his mammoth history of the country, that he “fell like a rotten fruit, full of its own corruption.” Prío himself later said of his presidency: “They say that I was a terrible president of Cuba. That may be true. But I was the best president Cuba ever had.”[see Arthur M. Schlesinger, A Thousand Days: John F. Kennedy in the White House. New York: Houghton Mifflin (2002) p 216].

Prio was in fact someone who tried to keep to constitutional proprieties and it was his decision not to act extra-judicially which allowed the harsher figure of Batista to seize power in 1952, Prio himself having been elected (by free and contested election) in 1948.

Cuba in the 1950s was sometimes described as somewhere between a Latin American country and a detached, poorer, part of the United States, the latter for long its effective suzerain.

It would be easier to make a quick judgment of Castro’s rule had the United States not (and typically) engaged in ham-fisted great-power and quasi-colonialist geopolitics over the island. Those American interventions continue to muddy the waters: attempts to assassinate Castro, the Bay of Pigs “invasion” of 1961; above all, the partial embargo (which Cuba called a “blockade”) imposed initially in 1960.

No-one can say for sure whether Cuba would be much different had it had the chance to trade freely with the USA, its neighbour and natural main trading partner. Probably not much. Venezuela is another and more recent example of the inability of a Latin American socialist economy to perform adequately for long.

The  bien-pensant “usual suspects” in the UK (the absurd Tariq Ali, Ken Livingstone, Jeremy Corbyn etc) are now saying that the Castro dictatorship was sort-of acceptable because Cuba had good education and good medical services. On that basis, they should be very kind indeed to German National Socialism, which provided the same and in fact far more (and with far less repression, in reality).

In fact, long before the Soviet subsidy disappeared, Havana was falling to pieces, as were the Cuban roads and railways. I myself had fleeting and peripheral contact with Cuba, otherwise seen by me only from the sea (between Cuba and the Bahamas) and the air (flying over Cuba between Tampa, Florida and Grand Cayman).

I was asked, when a practising barrister in London circa 1995, to help a scientific start-up based at Porton Down, Wiltshire, the high-security  biological warfare facility, then recently partly-privatized. A small company of scientists had a bacterium which turned biomass into fuel (unscientific me calling it the turning of straw into gold). I thought of Cuba with its sugar-cane detritus, lack of fuel and high technical-education levels. Unfortunately, the Cuban Embassy in London did not respond, unlike the Ukrainian: I visited Porton Down with the then Ukrainian Ambassador, Mr. Komisarenko [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serhiy_Komisarenko]. Nothing came of that in the end, but it seems that, in more recent years, a company called Havana Energy, headed by ex-Labour Party MP Brian Wilson, has been producing energy that way in Cuba. The Cuban Embassy’s unresponsiveness told me all I needed to know about the Cuban bureaucracy: unalert, lethargic, useless, bearing in mind the country’s crying need for fuel.

Since the early 1990s, Cuba has gradually been moving towards a capitalist economy. No doubt that process will continue. Eventually, some kind of greater rapprochement with the USA will happen.

In this blog post, I am more interested in the puerile reaction of the kind of people in the UK who are letting off Castro on human rights and economic efficiency because Cubans have a health service and a school system. Jeremy Corbyn has excelled himself in ignorant misunderstanding. He just digs himself deeper with every statement.

The mass media and in particular the BBC is, as one might expect, doing its bit to eulogize about Castro, saying that he “turned a small island into a major force in world affairs.” Where does one start in unpacking such nonsense?

The reaction to Castro’s death tells me something else: those in the UK who think themselves “socialist” are willing to turn a blind eye to historical, political and economic realities so long as the label is right.
