Ms Fergus-Simms also claimed Ms Pungi’s shoplifting started as a way to feed herself without support from her family, but this became ‘a habit that stuck’.
Sparing her prison, Recorder Campbell said: “The greatest punishment you have is you are unable to pursue your dream career in the law.”
Ms Pungi was sentenced to 18 months in prison, suspended for 18 months, with no compensation order. Prosecutors also declined to pursue the money through the Proceeds of Crime Act, as there was no realistic prospect of the cash being recovered.”

Having said that, when I had (historical) tax problems and had to engage with the Revenue, well over a decade ago, especially in 2010-2011, I was quite frankly amazed to see how utterly shambolic the HMRC “service” actually was. It’s an overused term, but it was “Kafka-esque” to a degree I would not have believed had I not experienced it myself.
So now it is actually worse? Hard to believe. The one comfort I have from that very stressful period many years ago is that, soon after I got off the hook, and during the Cameron-Levita/Osborne “austerity” programme, most if not all of the HMRC staff that had harassed and annoyed me, and created problems for me, lost their jobs. Suck on that…
Still, all’s well that ends well…my income is now so low that the shambles of administration in that “service” need not concern me. My problems with “the taxman” were settled to my satisfaction in 2012.

There was also that brave assault by the SBS, in which its personnel “fast-roped” from helicopters straight down onto the deck of the tanker, and then took back the ship in a matter of minutes (Sky and BBC said 9 minutes; some reports said 7). All true.
Sadly, and it is no reflection on the SBS, its men and their operation, but that was all part of the imperial hypocrisy. It was used by the Government and msm to say to the public, “look at that! We are really tough on piracy and illegal immigration! Detained by the tough guys from the SBS! That will show them!”

I heard on BBC World Service that that Kurdish family paid 24,000 Euros to smugglers to be brought to France and then given a boat (with outboard motor) with which to cross to the UK. They had sold all their possessions. All right, but I wonder how many British people in the UK could, even if they did sell all they had, raise over £20,000?
Those Kurds were not in any real sense “refugees”. They were economic migrants. In a sense, I do not “blame” them for wanting to come to Europe or the UK in particular; they obviously were trying to improve their lot.
