As I often reiterate (because many people assume, wrongly, that I believe in judicial harshness), I am generally not a “hanger and flogger”, but here we have an example of how things have slid into near-lawlessness.
When I was initially at the English Bar (early 1990s), it was a given that “breach of trust” cases of embezzlement, especially where the sums were substantial, would normally result in incarceration, yet here we have a case involving over half a million pounds, continuing for quite a while (2+ years), and the defrauding of a medical practice but also 8 actual doctors, and the defendant gets a “suspended”…

The only aspect more severe is that that embezzler woman will have to pick up litter or do similar work for a few weeks, whereas I was excused any unpaid slave-labour.
My own sentence in 2024 (for telling the truth) was 15 “rehabilitation” “days” (in fact, each “day” was between 20 and 120 minutes, the average being about 30 minutes or so) with a young lady from the Probation Service, and a financial penalty of over £700 (about a third was crowdfunded).

In the early Victorian period (1840s), formal education for the poor was only found in isolated places, but from the 1840s poor schools were founded. The Education Act 1870 brought in radical change. By 1891, education for poor children was both available and mandatory, and was free of charge. The Fabian Society, founded in 1884, had little or nothing to do with that.

They just do not want to see the elephant in the room— the continuing migration invasion. I have the memoirs of the Labour MP and junior minister, Chris Mullin, A View from the Foothills. In an entry from 2000, he was told by the civil service, upon enquiring as to the availability of council housing, that as much as 75% of the social housing (perhaps in one area) was being occupied by asylum-seekers. That was 26 years ago!
In a sense, simple arithmetic does the job. Between one million and one and a half million immigrants each year (minus a couple of hundred thousand Brits emigrating to what they hope are still white/European places overseas), minus another modest number of non-Brits leaving, so somewhere between 600,000 and 1,000,000 extra persons in the country, but only 150,000-200,000 dwelling units built (in the past year). Result— a shortfall of at least 400,000 houses and flats each year, and maybe as many as 800,000.
