For example, we have recently seen the emergence of the Free Speech Union. It has a Twitter account, and well-known figures from the “controlled opposition” lead it or belong to it, but the FSU has never once, not one single time, supported the freedom of expression of, say, Alison Chabloz (imprisoned for taking part in an Internet “radio” podcast discussion which mentioned Jews), or Jez Turner (imprisoned for making a speech in Whitehall which mentioned Jews) etc.

Naturally, a moment’s thought makes it clear that, if you “have free speech but not freedom from consequences“, then Stalin’s Russia, Mao’s China, even Pol Pot’s Cambodia, or North Korea, had “free speech”. You can say whatever you like, but you may then end up in the “GULAG Archipelago”, or the Cambodian “Killing Fields”.

There should be unlimited free speech on social, historical, and political questions, no matter whether this or that ethnic or religious group feels offended. In fact, it is usually only a tiny part of any minority ethnic or religious group that is disposed to find “offence” or indeed to seek it out.
An obvious example of the above is the “Campaign Against Antisemitism” or “CAA”, which purports to represent Jewish-Zionist interests in the UK, yet in fact is a tiny minority of a minority. Somewhere well below 500 members. I caught the last 5-10 mins of Radio 4 Today Programme. Some fellow whose voice betrayed his smug certainty of knowing “the truth”…That person managed to get away with several meaningless statements such as “populism is Right Wing” (“rightwing” stopped being a useful descriptor decades if not centuries ago), finishing up with the assertion that “populists” were trying to “latch on to anti-lockdown protests” but that would not help the “populists” because it put them in the same place as “the nutters who think that the virus is caused by 5G“.
Well, I don’t think that many imagine that “the virus” is or was caused by 5G, though there seems to be at least some evidence that 5G has deleterious health effects. After all, the public were told for decades that high-tension power lines caused no health problems. Now?
Not understanding why something happens is not the same as something not happening.
Moving back to “populism”, I think that it is true that mere populism is usually short-lived, built as it is on the shifting sands of public opinion. Without ideological structure, a populist protest movement is a jellybag and cannot create anything lasting. As a child in the 1960s and as a teenager in the 1970s, I lived (with a 3-year break in Australia) on the outer fringe of Reading, on the border of South Oxfordshire, an area called Caversham Heights [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caversham_Heights], which is only a mile, if that, from the crime scene reported upon. I notice from the Daily Mail photos that, since the 1970s, the immediate crime scene area has changed from being rural to being basically suburban. Around the crime scene there now seem to be streets, houses (1980s or 1990s housing, from the look of them), where before there was no housing at all, as I remember.

I listen to Radio 4 every day and everyone they interview talks about how they are happily complying with lockdown, maybe with a little story about how they were sad for 20 seconds to be relatable. People joyously talking about having their Christmas over Zoom, no dissent allowed
The implication and in fact purport of the above tweet is that “lockdown is the popular choice”, whereas to me the subtext is “the British people have become a bunch of scared rabbits, compliant to authority, and unwilling (perhaps unable) to think for themselves”…
According to cocaine-abuser Gove, the latest national house arrest may be in place in England until March. What then? Another stint? Will the people of this country ever wake up? Maybe when it is too late. Maybe when what is left of the NHS has been entirely ground down (leaving “Covid” aside, that is already happening). Maybe when those who still have a job find that their pay buys almost nothing.
