In a sense, one can see why the SNP is still riding fairly high in the opinion polls. Labour is washed-up north of the border as well as in England and Wales, the LibDem default-vote joke party is only supported in a few niche and/or former Conservative areas, and few these days will vote fake “Conservative” in most of Scotland. So for whom do Scottish people vote? It is said that both Restore Britain and Reform UK are gaining support, but surely not enough to worry the SNP. There again, between a third and a half of Scottish people still think that they want notional “Independence” from the UK, so that does limit their choice of party.
In the end, the SNP is just another globalist System party; pro-Israel, pro-Jewish lobby, pro-EU, pro-immigration. Same-old, in short. However, at present, enough Scottish people are fooled sufficiently by the fake flag-waving of the SNP (despite it at one point having been led by a Pakistani!) to keep the SNP in play.

Cornwall has plenty of (mostly 18thC/19thC) ruins and follies. My own (sadly only leased) house (2002-2004) near the Tamar, about 4 or 5 miles north of Launceston, had 4 acres of gardens, ornamental ponds, and Victorian grottos and, beyond that, about 80 acres of woodland (with black deer etc), and a small river. Hard to believe, now.

Probably not around here. Even now, my seat of Brentwood and Ongar is the 26th safest Tory seat in the country (mind you, it was the TENTH safest in 2019) with a perfectly decent majority of 5,900 odd votes (down from a ridiculous 29,000 before) and with Reform UK in SECOND place. Apparently, only NINE Conservative seats have Reform UK as runners-up.

That is an area outside my areas of knowledge and/or comfort, but I do recall sitting in a cafe in Grafton Street, Dublin in the mid-1980s and listening with my then girlfriend (we were there with the Bolshoi Ballet, in my case unofficially) to three wealthy-looking Irish ladies talking about how they now (then) went to Paris for their clothes because Dublin had become quite as expensive. As my grandmother sometimes said (a phrase from her Edwardian childhood I think), “how the rich do live!“…
I had to breakfast at cafes because living at but not officially staying or registered at the massive and not-bad hotel almost entirely occupied by the Bolshoi Ballet (300-strong if you include all the support staff etc), I was not entitled to a free breakfast.

I did not really like ‘The Wicked Witch of Jockland’ but I quite liked Alex Salmond. Of course, I did not support his ideology and it was a tragic manner in which he died. He was an able politician. It is a shame he could not have used his political talents for the betterment of the UK as a whole.

Watching, occasionally, some of those American “true crime” documentaries, I am struck by how readily the police, at least in smaller cities and towns in the USA, are willing to perform “welfare checks” on people about whom relatives or friends are concerned. I doubt that the police in the UK do that very often, unless there are upfront reasons beyond simple anxieties to check on people.

Singapore has very harsh laws against drug traffickers which to outsiders like us look excessive but can be explained with reference to their situation in that they are a small island nation with a very prosperous population able to buy drugs easily and located near a far larger country ie Malaysia where the average income is lower thus that country has more people willing to sell drugs. Singapore is also near the ‘Golden Triangle’ – a major world drug producing area of the world and its borders are crossed frquently by huge numbers of people every day.
Amnesty International regularly criticises Singapore’s ultra-tough drug laws with their harsh penalties but they work. Many drug traffickers are prepared to spend even long terms in prison yet few are willing to risk their necks being broken by a highly-skilled hangman between the second and third vetrebra.
Singapore is one of the very few countries which has succesfully tackled drug abuse. It looks to me that the Singaporean government uses the execution of drug dealers and other measures as a roundabout way of lowering still further their already low murder rate.

Re Alex Yerbury and the NRP tweet above, I yield to no one in my admiration of Singapore’s tough measures against criminals but even I find the suggestion we should hang ALL rapists a bit strong. This is something even the ‘hang ’em high city’ of Singapore does not do. The death penalty is an extremely serious sanction for criminality so it should be used quite sparingly. Murderers, drug dealers, traitors of both political and journalistic backgrounds should go to the gallows. I could support capital punishment for the more serious crime of GANG rape as opposed to ‘ordinary’ rape. They do this in Pakistan and it probably happened under the previous colonial British rule. The government there obviously has a view it is needed for a population they know will contain many gang rapists.

It is counter-intuitive, in that you might expect that people who have been on a journalism course at a “university” (of some kind) for up to 3 years would be far better than those of the old school who joined some local newspaper straight from school, in many cases, then moved up, if they got the breaks, to Fleet Street or wherever, but such is simply not the case.
