I seem to remember that, when I was last in Moscow (2007), the rouble was about 20 to the U.S. dollar, maybe 25. OK, so now it is over 100 to the dollar. Only a fifth of the value it held in 2007.
True, but things are not quite as simple as that. Most importantly, most Russian people (like most Americans) either do not travel internationally, or do so only to countries where the local currency is itself weak. I myself recall encountering a Russian family on the Aegean coast of Turkey in 2001. At that time, most tourist Russians went to countries such as Turkey, North Cyprus or, even more popular, the Republic of Cyprus in the south of that island.
Even in 2001, most Russians did not travel beyond the borders of the former Soviet Union. Most, the vast majority, now stay at home.
Likewise, most Russians do not buy any imported goods at all, and so are insulated from price increases caused by the decline in value of the rouble.
Those who are most impacted by the fall in the value of the rouble are the wealthy, very wealthy, “oligarchs” etc. However, many of those people are so wealthy that a fall of 4/5ths of the notional value of their (Russia-based) assets is almost unimportant, they have so much money (as is the case with the oil sheikhs and rulers of the Middle East).
On the macro level, the fall in value means that Russian products and produce are price-competitive internationally. In any case, Russia is now doing much, perhaps most, of its trade with the “BRICS” states, not with the EU or North America etc. Sanctions, of course, apply to much of Russia’s pre-2022 trade with the West.

I appeared as Counsel there once (actually a 3-day trial), in early 1994, when it was still Middlesex Guildhall Crown Court. The courtrooms then were very pleasant pre-WW1 panelled rooms, not at all like the —as I now see— fairly bland UK Supreme Court one.
It was my first (and one of few) Crown Court criminal trials, a “section 18” GBH with intent, which carries a maximum life sentence. My defendant, had he been convicted, would have been sentenced, probably, to 5 or 6 years in those days, he having thrown hot oil over the “victim”, then stabbed him twice with a chef’s knife. Happily for him, he was acquitted on self-defence, a result I had thought was a 50-50 possibility, though the defendant himself was sure that he would be going down, and for several years.
I remember it well, not least because a friend at the Bar (who already had a good criminal practice) later remarked, on being told by me that I had done my first full Crown Court trial, resulting in acquittal, “oh, so you got him off?!“, to which I replied, modestly, “well, he got off…“, to which his rejoinder was “no, don’t put yourself down.” Kind words. Actually, I think I did OK, in a rather green sort of way…

When I was a practising barrister (1993-2008, though with extended breaks when I was overseas or engaged elsewhere), conducting hearings by video link had either not yet started, or was in its infancy; certainly I never encountered it, though I did some telephone hearings in latter years, usually from home. They involved civil/commercial interlocutory and/or procedural matters. Awkward when the cats miaowed loudly.
I should add that, after the early/mid 1990s, I did almost no criminal cases, except the odd corporate matter, representing large companies accused of breaching the law in various —mostly rather minor— ways.
Now, however, video link hearings in criminal cases are commonplace, especially in respect of sentencing hearings. It saves money, and inconvenience. But…
I think that sentencings especially (but also any examination or cross-examination of witnesses, including the accused) should always be carried out face-to-face in open court. The judge can see, a relatively few feet away, the demeanour of the person talking, in a way that is just not the same via video link, however good the technology.
Can it really be right that a defendant be sentenced, often to a term of years, while in a prison and at the end of a video link? I think not.

Rishi Sunak suspended the Triple Lock, “for a year” supposedly. That alone diminished the support for the Conservative Party. Labour climbed above Conservative in the opinion polls for the first time in years. Sunak failed to become Conservative Party leader and Prime Minister because the “grey vote” within the Conservative Party defected to Liz Truss, who promised almost everyone almost everything.
Now we see that even the “grey vote” is abandoning the Conservative Party, as I have been recently predicting. If your only real reasons to vote “Conservative”, as a 60+-aged voter, are a. the value of State pensions and benefits (including Pension Guarantee Credit); b. to stop or restrict mass immigration; and c. law and order, then the Conservative Party has let you down royally on all three.
This would be the moment for a social-national party to strike, if there were one. The absence of one is both infuriating (for me) and tragic (for the British people and their future).

The unexpected —by some— degree of support for Johnson is a political grasping at straws. Look at the Conservative Party standing in the opinion polls. 14%! Even if that level of voter intent were to double by the time of a general election, it would still result in a massive Labour victory; and there is no guarantee that voter intentions will improve for the Conservative Party.
The MPs backing Johnson are doing so because they do not believe that any but a smallish minority of the British electorate will vote for a party led by a globalist Indian billionaire. “Boris” (though in fact not entirely English) looks and sounds at least sort-of English, is a known quantity even if useless, and so is “the Devil you know”, and has to be more popular with some of the public (if only as a clown or jester) than Sunak.

As we know, the UK has been cutting defence for years, indeed decades. Large numbers of Army, RAF, and Royal Navy bases are now private housing tracts, and the graphic above makes clear how deep the cuts have been.
At the same time prime ministers of the UK have taken to talking big on defence and war. We have seen, for example, how David Cameron-Levita wanted to get rid of Gaddafi (or rather, the Israelis did, and “Scameron” was but one useful idiot there to do it). Disastrous, allowing millions of migrant-invaders to flood through Libya to Europe, apart from anything else. Leave that aside, though, and look at the forces used.
Even in 2011, British forces were actually incapable of launching an invasion of a state even as weak (beyond outward show) as Libya. They would have been unable to transport enough soldiers by air or even by sea, if they had enough front-line soldiers to transport in the first place.
Thus it was that Britain relied on French and Italian help to refuel the small RAF forces deployed, mostly bombers. The French Navy also had greater resources to deploy than the British.
In the end, as we know, rebel Libyan forces, semi-barbaric, overthrew Gaddafi, brutally killed him, and instituted a period of chaotic lawlessness which today, 11 years later, still reigns.
This is not an analysis of the results of the pathetic strategic ineptitude, but of the fact that Britain was weak in 2011; it is far weaker today. Still, it is worth just looking at the results of David Cameron-Levita-Schlumberger’s stupidity (though I am sure that his Israeli relatives and their government were pleased).

What I find risible about Admiral Lord West’s Daily Mail article is that he (perhaps understandably) thinks in terms of fighting a seaborne or other invasion force, as in the days of the Armada, Napoleon, or the wars against Germany in the 20th Century, or conflicts such as that of the Falklands Campaign in which he himself served (the ship he commanded was sunk under him, he being the last to abandon the vessel). For one thing, Britain now faces no threat of the traditional kind from any quarter. The expansionist Soviet Union ground to a halt in the 1980s, and was replaced in the 1990s by the present Russian Federation, which has no intention of occupying Central and Western Europe; moreover, it no longer has any ideology (akin to the old Marxism-Leninism) that might underpin such an intention or wish.
Likewise, I doubt that any serious person imagines that China has any intention of invading Western Europe, let alone the UK. Why would it? When we look at Western Europe, at the UK, do we see Chinese battle fleets or air fleets approaching? No, but we do see not only Chinese manufactured goods everywhere, but actual Chinese people everywhere. That process of gradual and peaceful colonization has increased in flow in recent years. “Boris-idiot” has even invited potentially millions of Hong Kong Chinese to settle in the UK, to add to the very large numbers already here.
Whatever may be said about all that, the fact is that the UK armed forces could not stop such migration-invasion. Au contraire, the modest Royal Navy forces available in the English Channel are actually helping the multikulti “dinghy people” or “RIB people” of many origins to cross over, land illegally, and then claim (usually bogus) “asylum” here.
The only country which has any desire to occupy Western Europe has, in effect, already done so. The USA has bases and personnel all over Europe, including the UK, and treats the UK more or less as a colony. However, Admiral Lord West’s suggested larger armed forces would be expected to work with those American occupation forces, not against them. Take another look at the graphic; the huge military power available to the USA’s leaders is inescapable.
Yet we see Boris-idiot vicariously fighting Russia by supplying arms and ammunition to the regime of the Jew Zelensky in Kiev. We see intellectually-challenged MPs such as Johnny Mercer crowing “bring it on” (war with Russia). Same with Ben Wallace, the current Defence Secretary. Both ex-officers, though not senior ones.

I was looking at the TV earlier. Almost every ad had a black man and a white woman, with (usually) mixed-race children. I first posted the above clip about 6 months ago, and then wrote that, “Good grief! Someone sent me the clip below. A few other points about Vigil caught my attention. The GRU officer caught in Glasgow was interviewed about a murder (in which he was the only obvious suspect) without a lawyer present (despite having asked for one), and apparently without having been cautioned, and the interview was plainly not being taped (as far as I could see). At least three serious breaches of the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984, aka PACE. Not very good for a “police procedural” type of drama.
Again, the GRU [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GRU] officer under diplomatic cover, caught in Glasgow in activities “incompatible with his diplomatic status”, did not, on being caught, immediately proclaim his diplomatic status (and so immunity); neither did he demand to be released at once, or to have contacted for him the Russian Consulate, as a real one would have done.

When I myself was arrested (or as the Egyptian army and secret police said repeatedly, “not arrested”) in Alexandria in 1998, and held for about 11 hours by Egyptian Army intelligence/security and then the Mukhabarat (secret police), I asked repeatedly for the British Consul, only to be told (also repeatedly) that I was “not arrested”, but just “answering a few questions“, or “a fewmore questions“; also, that “the Consul will be very busy…“, and “the Consul is only for the most serious cases…you do not want to be treated as a serious case, do you?“…

I suppose that one could take issue with the first part of Griffin’s tweet: it was not the State ownership of the means of production that crippled socialist economies, but the fact that the State, the political sphere if you like, operated companies etc, in other words made all the important decisions. Admittedly, £81,000 is not a fortune these days, especially when taxable etc, but bearing in mind that average UK pay is only about £31,000 (and the median far less even than that, and less again if those dependent on State benefits and pensions are included), I doubt that many will think MPs are hard done by. Even less so when one considers how many have other sources of income, such as second jobs, “consultancy” “work”, money from scribbling or being TV talking heads etc; not to mention the very many who have large monies via inheritances.
Many MPs are also buy-to-let parasites.
In the end, MPs are volunteers. If they think that they are worth more than £81K p.a., let them go and get it on the open market. Few can do so, which is why so many are found sinecures in state employment, or in quangos (via cronyism) when they lose their seats.
