Not an issue that affects me personally now, though it would do were I still living in the large country house of which I had a lease in the 2002-2004 period. That house had an oil central heating system so complicated that two engineers had to come from the Midlands, maybe Derby, to tell us how to set the controls on the control panel (in the cellars), a panel that looked like something out of an old sci-fi film, or Stingray.
The oil was delivered by road tanker once a month, and they pumped enough to fill the tanks, so the price varied depending on usage, i.e. on the season.
As to the cost (and bear in mind this was well over 20 years ago), one cold January I got a bill for oil, for the month, of not much less than £700. For today’s value, I suppose you would have to add on the cost of coal and logs for the open fires (another £100 at least), then more than double it. Make it £1,600. For one month. That did not even cover heating the whole house, just some bedrooms, drawing room. library, kitchen/morning room area, Victorian conservatory, and the inner hall. We closed off many sections, including the ballroom.
God knows what the actual cost today, and/or soon, might be.

Yes. That is a very partial view. Fresh vegetables and fruits, when available, were unrationed. Some vegetables were abundant and actually had to be promoted by ads; potato, carrot etc. Fresh fish was unrationed (though in short supply), and bread was unrationed until after the war. Beer was unrationed, when available.
Naturally, the people who lived on country estates were best-placed to weather rationing. Game birds, and fish, were unrationed, and people living on a country estate would have ready access to eggs and other foodstuffs (and of course could grow fruits and vegetables in kitchen gardens or fields). Such people would also often have extensive wine cellars, so would have been able to drink French (and German!) wines bought before 1940.
I recall that the Cornish country house of which I had a lease (about 22 or so years ago) had quite large wine cellars (unstocked when I was there) which brought to mind the horror film adaptations of the works of Edgar Allan Poe:

106 acres. My own lease included only the main house, with 4 acres of gardens, ornamental ponds and Victorian grottoes.
The person who owns or owned the house was the son of the farmer who bought it in 1966 for the land; the farming family never lived there (I think) but built a modern house halfway down the mile-long drive.
I think that at that time far more land surrounded the house, and I was told that, in its pre-First World War heyday, there was an estate of 5,000 acres. Maybe.
I was told when I lived there that the sale price in 1965 was £65,000…but I have now seen an interview which puts the 1965 auction sale price at only £21,500!

The man who owned the house prior to 1966 was an apparently very nice man called Leslie Major, whose father had owned the house before him, and who also owned the mill at Lifton, Devon (a few miles away across the Tamar), and which is still a food plant, now owned by Purina.
Mr. Major founded the Devon Bird-Watching and Preservation Society, and wrote on daffodil growing. In the 1930s, he also raced cars.
I could write a possibly amusing memoir of my time there. Such as? Well, such as the time that it turned out that the “hippies” from the old stables were running a cannabis farm in the attics and, to disguise any interest by the authorities in the electricity used to keep the temperature high, had put an enormous tropical snake in there!
I was told that by the owner one day, after he discovered the “farm” and told them to get rid of the lot (cannabis plantation and snake!). He was a scoundrel of sorts, but more someone who sailed close to the wind rather than an out-and-out villain, and pleasant enough to talk to. A rural Arthur Daley, if you like.
In fact, long after I left, the hippies or others tried it again, as I read in an online local newspaper, I think around 2010. The police raided the place and made arrests, apparently…
In fact, I heard that some “businessman” (who turned out to be a drug dealer) took on the lease, or rented the house, some time after I left. His dead body was found in the drawing room, or so I heard. For the full Agatha Christie effect, of course, it should have been the Library!

I imagine that it will be hard to sell (except to someone wanting the revenue stream from rentals of the various houses, cottages and flats). To reconvert the main house would, I am guessing, be rather expensive.

At one time, in the UK, there were real journalists. They had opinions. They sometimes expressed them. They still, however, reported the news. Now? Politically-correct semi-literates and/or Jewish Zionists. There are a few exceptions (mostly sidelined or not much broadcast or printed). The others form a kind of ZOG-oriented cabal, which does not just include political journalists (most of them), but extends more widely, even beyond the news media, to the wider msm: commentators, even comedians and TV presenters. The closure of the majority of the UK’s railway system was indeed scandalous. Beeching and Marples were and remain the obvious villains, but there were widespread closures even before that, both from 1945-1965 and in the interwar period 1918-1939. In the United States, the decision was made to keep the tracks even where railways were closed. A strategic defence decision. How much better off would Britain have been had it too done that! New, high-tech rail (ultralight, robotic etc) might have used the same track, or relaid track. Instead, rail lines were taken up and the land, in many cases, built upon.

I wrote, before “Boris” was “elected” as Conservative Party leader, that it really did not matter what unpleasant acts emerged about him. He was already known to be a moneygrubber, an incompetent, a constant liar, completely unable to actually run anything, as well as being part-Jew, part-Turk, and rather nasty altogether. So what new scandal could destabilize him?
“Boris” had (and has) weaponized his incompetence and lack of ability. No-one really expects even basic decency from him, let alone integrity, still less the ability to properly fulfil his office. That lack of any public expectation is like a suit of armour for him.
In any case, the Labour Party is now considered so useless by the white British that nothing short of a “nuclear”-level scandal would push them beyond the Conservative Party. Is the present kefuffle that? Probably not.
Once again, I am deflected from my slow and peaceful writing of a piece about my several years in Cornwall and Devon, and particularly those spent at Polapit Tamar [below, pictured in the 1940s], and which has an interesting history of its own,
by the need to write about contemporary political events. Still, duty calls…

In other blog posts, I have criticized Corbyn-Labour-supporting Aaron Bastani, Ash Sarkar etc, but Bastani is surely right in tweeting that “The space for a successful far-right party in the UK is massive.” The label “far-right” I disparage, of course, but in essence I agree with him. The difference is that he opposes the birth of such a movement, whereas I support it!

I have recently blogged about the “Independent Group” non-party, about how it will struggle even to get to a 2015-UKIP level of support (see Notes, below), both for “technical” reasons (FPTP voting, a likely even level of support nationwide, so insufficient to create a winning concentration of votes, a Schwerpunkt, in any one constituency etc) and because the voters are moving to the falsely so-called “extreme”. I examined also the Social Democrat Party of the early 1980s.
There is however also the point that Bastani raises in the tweet shown above (does he read my blog?): the fact that people generally are getting frustrated, and many angry, very angry, with smug, “centrist” MPs and MEPs complacently making hay for themselves as people struggle and, in not a few cases, literally starve to death in the UK (thanks to policies such as the “welfare” “reforms” which were imposed by political rats such as Iain Dunce Duncan Smith, Esther McVey, the Jew “lord” Freud and many others).
The roads are potholed, the trains are expensive and don’t even run much of the time, mass immigration has, taking the effect overall, trashed our European society, legal services, local services etc have been cut or destroyed, housing has not only become completely inadequate (mass immigration, millions of births to backward aliens, private profiteering) but threatens to become even less adequate.
The British people want and increasingly will want concrete results. The Westminster game of using the corrupt electoral system to win over the “moderate” voters in the 50-100 most marginal constituencies to a “same-old” pseudo-democratic con-game is seen as the rigged system that it is.
A few years down the line, the choice will be stark: European civilization and social nationalism against “multikulti” neo or pseudo-Marxism and also against Zionist-controlled private profiteering and fake “conservatism”.
When the right time comes, our society will be changed in the right way, keeping what should be preserved, creating what is new and worthwhile, but destroying the inferior with the flame of justice.
