I was not familiar with the facts of the case until (just now) reading the above link, but if the defendant did actually nothing, neither by deed nor by word (of incitement, though he did say things of an insulting and profane character), then how could any judge, properly directing himself, either find the defendant guilty (even on a plea of guilty, which may have been procured by fear of a heavier sentence yet) or hand down any custodial sentence?
I see now, in the Daily Telegraph report, that the defendant did in fact push at a police riot shield, though once only.
The judge was fair enough to have gone into recess at the trial, until further video evidence was screened.

Indeed, if the defendant’s only action had been to be at the scene, and even if, so to speak, “silently in agreement” with the acts done by others, then that surely would not be enough? His words actually said were at worst ambiguous, in my view. Meaning that, on those premises, arguende, there was no actus reus sufficient in law (?). However, the pushing of the riot shield might (and obviously did) change that, in the mind of the judge. Rather thin, though.
Even if the judge felt impelled to imprison that defendant, surely 3 months would have been more than enough? He would then have been released within 4-5 weeks. Now, he will be spending about 5 months in prison, unless he gets bail pending any appeal on sentence.

In 2019, Laura Farris scored 57.4% (LibDems 30.6%).
In 2015, UKIP scored over 10% here.
In my opinion, it is not impossible to see Reform UK getting 15% or even more, and the Con vote reducing to about 40%, maybe even 35%. In those circumstances, it is at least possible to see the LibDems getting 35% (or even more, if aided by tactical voting; they scored 35.5% in 2010) and so pulling off rather a coup.
According to my use of Electoral Calculus, that would give Labour 512 MPs (overall majority 374), LibDems 58, Cons 31, SNP 20, Reform UK 4, Plaid Cymru 4, Greens 2 (etc).
So, on that basis, a Labour “elected” dictatorship, LibDems as official Opposition, Cons facing the end of the road, and the SNP pretty washed-up. Also, Farage with a very small but significant bloc of MPs, likely to punch above their weight in public relations terms.
Incidentally, were the Cons to fall to 17% from 18%, their MP numbers would fall from 31 to only 21. FPTP is a harsh system.

Secondly, their originality and quality. Thirdly, their music evokes a sense of the optimism of England in the years of the early/mid 1960s. It seems Mr Lewis thought Mr Cantor had no assets and had financial immunity for my costs even if he lost.
The โmisunderstandingโ is catastrophic for Mr Cantor and his family because he must sell his house to pay my costs.

Lewis is actually a pretty poor lawyer anyway in my opinion (based partly on what I have read about him over the years), and he has in the past admitted that at times — apparently by reason of his prescribed medications, in part— he has, or has had, no idea of what he is or was doing.
Looks now as if that Cantor individual (of whom I know nothing, and of whom I had never heard until this case finished recently) will or might have to take legal action against Lewis himself if he is not to become homeless after his failed attempt to ruin a university academic. What a great pity…

No matter how much money the U.S. Government sends to the Kiev regime, no matter even how much armament and ammunition is sent, the Kiev regime cannot “win”, even to the extent of occupying the Donbass and Crimea.
The Kiev regime army is flagging as many desert the field, and many more avoid conscription. To be recruited by the Kiev regime army is to be sent to quite likely death or life-changing injury on the front-lines, which are now starting to collapse.
Ukraine is producing few children, and a quarter or more of its pre-2022 population is living outside Ukraine. If American and EU aid stopped, there would be no fighting within a few weeks, followed by either a negotiated armistice or Russian victory. As it is, it looks as though this brutal war will smoulder on for months, maybe even a year or two.
In the end, though, Russia will “win”, in the sense of taking over all of Eastern Ukraine, and possibly the coast as far as, and maybe beyond, Odessa.
I watched a few minutes of a very biased BBC World News report about the war. The reporter, some bearded fellow whose name I did not catch, did say something about why Ukrainians try to avoid fighting. Apart from the obvious dangers, open-ended service (no way of getting out) and poor conditions generally.
What, however, made the report farcical was said reporter’s then assertion that Ukraine is a “genuine democracy“. Well said, Griffin, though “upper class” is stretching it a bit! The only criticism I would advance of Oborne’s view in that piece, to the effect that Britain must try to get back to the postwar 1950s/1960s “one nation” idea, is that that cannot now happen. Why not?
