Saw a long recording of the final director’s cut of the famous film, Apocalypse Now. More than impressive, and makes much more sense than the usual much-cut-down version that I have seen in the past.
Quite many films have been butchered; to what extent, you only understand once you see fuller versions: The Wicker Man (1973) is far far better in the rather longer versions. I once had a copy of the Director’s Cut version.
One film that I thought only just made sense when I first saw it in France is Les Rivieres pourpres. I read later that the director had cut out a high proportion of the film as originally made; as far as I know, no longer cut exists in the public domain.

One of the big questions is as to whether Restore (not mentioned in that poll) and Reform are fishing in the same pool, or whether one (Restore?) or both are, or will be, able to get usual non-voters, those disgusted by the choice previously available, out to vote. That poll would seem to indicate that Labour may not revive even if Burnham does replace Starmer-stein. Not so surprising, really. I have commented previously on the fact that in the UK we are now moving rapidly to a non-civic society, i.e. one where people vote (whether in elections or when on juries) according to racial and cultural loyalties. Call it the “O.J. Simpson syndrome” if you like.
I fully support the jury system, in principle, and was myself a practising barrister for a number of years (1992-2008, based in London and later Exeter when not overseas), but the jury system falls to pieces in a “multicultural” society. The same is true of voting “democracy”, and a police force that can be relied upon.

At various times in history, states have promulgated “sumptuary laws”, defined by Wikipedia as follows:

I think there are cogent arguments for similar laws in the UK at present. Let’s stamp on the nouveaux riches types (indeed, all of the excessively-rich) and those aping them and their lifestyles, including “influencers” and “celebrities” of one kind and another.

The way England and all Britain, indeed all of the British Isles, and most of Europe now is, it seems to me that the only way forward is a replacement of the existing political/socio-political system by a limited-period social-national dictatorship. This minister’s mood, and that of his colleagues, he said, “was increasingly of despair”.
Perhaps the biggest problem was that Starmer “is seemingly unable to give a clear coherent sense of direction for the country.”
“Voters will forgive you many of your mistakes if you can tell them where you want to take them. But he has been incapable of doing that, and none of us know whether he ever can.”
Even those members of the Cabinet who are genuine loyalists talk about him on the basis of hypothesis and guesswork. None of them seem to actually know what makes him tick or what he wants (one told me he was planning to set out his own policies more publicly in the hope that perhaps the PM would adopt them).
In that sense Starmer seems more isolated than any prime minister I’ve ever known.
A very big test for him comes on Monday, when he is expected to give a speech that will be billed as his agenda for the rest of the parliament but is in practice a plea to his MPs to give him a last chance.
I asked a minister what MPs would need to hear to be clear that he does understand their concerns, that he “gets it”.
This was the reply. “I mean god knows because I dont think he does. It’s not anything anyone else can tell him it has to come from him.”
And that, in a nutshell, is why Starmer is in so much trouble.“]
