Whatever the arguments, the fact is that pensioners will be worse-off under Labour after 2030 (when Burnham says the Triple Lock will go) and, quite possibly, before then. Result? 99% of pensioners (a third of the electorate, and maybe as much as 50% of the actually-voting electorate) will not be voting Labour. Largely but not just because of the Triple Lock being dumped. It is the whole direction of travel.

That will now shrink to about 1%-2%, I expect. That means that 98% of those 65+ will vote somewhere other than Labour. Probably Reform, most of them.
The point, though, previously also made on the blog, is that people aged 65+ mostly actually vote. The other age-groups vote in far smaller numbers, proportionately.
The 65+ age group is about a third of the electorate, and must be at least 40% of those that actually turn out to vote (or vote via postal ballot). Maybe even 50%
Labour will therefore not be getting the votes of anything up to 50% of the total of those (of all ages) that vote, even before taking into consideration the votes of the <65 age groups.
Burnham-Labour has already alienated the under-24 age group by the recently-announced benefit cuts and changes.
Anything can happen in politics, but it would take a near-miracle for Labour to get to 35% of the poll, and that is surely their minimum if they want to be sure of a Commons majority.
That latest poll translates to a Commons with about 342 Labour MPs (so a majority of seats), 155 Reform (official Opposition), 55 Cons, 51 LibDems, and 20 SNP [etc].
Uncertain now how accurate such predictions are. Restore may only be getting 3% of the opinion poll votes, but that is enough to badly damage Reform in marginal seats. As to Labour, I doubt whether its present relative popularity will continue, but there is no doubt that many of Burnham’s recently-announced policies are quite popular:

My feeling right now is that Reform, though so disappointing (pro-Israel, pro-Jewish lobby, pro-finance-capitalism and —in some respects— globalism, is still the main game in town in terms of at least pseudo-national populism. I can see many more presently Conservative votes going to Reform.
If I am right, and the Con vote reduces to, say 12% by 2028/2029, and the Reform vote rises to, say, 30%, then the post-election picture would be very different: that would give Labour maybe 265 MPs (far short of a majority), and Reform would have more MPs than Lab, 281. The LibDems would be on 53, the SNP 23, Greens 3 and the Con Party only 2. Near-wipeout. That would effectively finish off the Con Party.
As to government, Reform would be unable to form even a workable minority government despite having a plurality of MPs, but Labour would just about be able to function as a minority government with LibDem and SNP [etc] support.

I happened to see a travel show presented by an American of whom I had not previously heard, one Stanley Tucci [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stanley_Tucci]. Apparently a well-known film-maker and actor (well, I cannot know everything…). A New Yorker whose grandparents or great-grandparents emigrated from Calabria to America before the Second World War or, possibly, before the First World War.
It seems that the show was made in 2021, so 5+ years ago.
The programme showed him in Tuscany, then in Sicily. Mostly about the Italian regional cuisine(s). Not terribly dull, though hardly riveting, but of course this is an area covered many times in similar vein (think Rick Stein, Jamie Oliver, and many others).
When in Sicily, this Tucci expressed the view that immigration improves any society! Very wrongheaded. What many now call a “luxury belief” held by those (usually the affluent) who prefer not to see the downsides of mass immigration from backward parts of the world such as black Africa, North Africa etc.
Even without having to hear his wrongheaded views about the migration-invasion of Italy, I have to say that I found the aforesaid Tucci not someone to whom I warmed. He lacked the charm of some similar TV tourists.

It's not just morally wrong, it's economically illiterate. Pensioners spend what they receive. That spending is demand. Cutting the triple lock doesn't just hurt today's pensioners—it removes demand from the economy, year after year. It's a regressive, self-defeating policy.
The same is true of cuts to social security/”welfare”, in most cases.
Thoughts out of season
In my view, taking the electorate overall, the voters knew what they were doing in 2024. They were binning the Conservative Party. What were were not doing, in intention, or primarily, was voting for a Starmer-Labour government (which has now become a Burnham-Labour government).
In 2024, the only way to bin the Conservatives led by little Indian money-juggler, Sunak, was to vote against the Conservative candidates. In some constituencies that meant voting Labour, in others for Reform, in yet others LibDem or even Green.
As frequently blogged about over the past 2.5 years, out of every 20 people eligible to vote, 8 did not vote at all, 4 voted Labour, 3 voted Conservative, 2 voted Reform, 2 voted LibDem, and 1 voted Green.
Rough figures, obviously. Reform scored about 600,000 more votes than the LibDems, even though the latter ended up with 72 MPs, and Reform only 6, by reason of the absurd voting system in the UK. Likewise, the Greens did not get anywhere near 1 out of 20 potential votes (or 1 out of every 12 cast), but closer to half a vote out of every 20.
In short, Starmer-stein had no real mandate. Only 4 out of 12 actual voters voted Labour; 4 out of every 20 potential/eligible voters.
Even if you take it in terms of those that actually voted, Labour was only voted for by about a third of those who voted.
Burnham may be marginally more popular than Starmer-stein, but not much more.
Nature abhors a vacuum. The Cons were binned by the voters mostly voting elsewhere, or abstaining. Labour will probably go the same way. However, Reform is so underwhelming (pro-finance-capitalism, pro-Jewish lobby, pro-Israel) that its ceiling is probably, at highest, 35%, and its popularity presently stands somewhere around 25%.
What matters is not just Reform UK’s popularity, but the unpopularity of, in particular, Labour. I think that most people who want rid of Labour will vote Reform (if they are anti-immigration), or LibDem/Green if they are not very anti-immigration and/or want to rejoin the EU.
How high can Labour’s polling go? It could get up to 30%, but it may well stick, in the end, say next year, around 25%. Hard to see it going as high as 35%.

What Burnham and Labour have failed to understand is that, yes, maybe “only” 28% of voters oppose dumping the Triple Lock, but almost all of those are people over 60 y-o.
About a third of the electorate (not the whole population 0-100) is now aged 65+; probably 40% or more are aged 60+. In other words, it can be inferred that a very high percentage of those aged 60+, and almost all of those aged 65+, oppose dumping the Triple Lock. These are the people who always vote (admittedly, I myself am an exception). If 28% of eligible voters are against dumping the Triple Lock, then probably about 40% of voters who are actually going to vote oppose these proposals.
I think that Labour will find that much of their support among the over 60s, maybe also over-50s, will fall away now. Why? Because those getting or about to get the State Pension are really interested in what happens to the Triple Lock, whereas younger people, whatever their views, are naturally not going to be so interested, so their approval of Burnham’s plans is not very important politically, electorally; they have other issues of importance to them.
One point to bear in mind is that the official inflation figures do not reflect the real state of play. Inflation is usually far higher than the official figures suggest, and that particularly applies to the staples that poorer people, and many pensioners in particular, buy regularly.

I believe that the Socialist Worker Party was started and led at first by a Jew called Ygael Gluckstein, who used the Anglicized nom de guerre “Tony Cliff”. Starmer-stein’s mandate, as Prime Minister, was very doubtful: in 2024, in rough terms, out of every 20 eligible voters, 8 did not actually vote, 4 voted Labour, 3 voted Con, 2 voted Reform, 2 voted LibDem, and 1 voted Green. Labour was voted for by 4 out of 20 eligible voters (4 out of 12 actually-voting voters).
Burnham has merely inherited Starmer-stein’s purple (via the equivalent of a palace revoilution) and, naturally (in political reality, if not in strict British Constitutional terms), has far less of a mandate than Starmer-stein. He has no programme beyond that of trying to please as many likely or potential voters as possible. He is totally out of his depth in every way.

If that is so, I think that I know why it is so. Such places were tribal Labour for a century or more, and now those people feel betrayed. Helen Whately is unlikely to retain her Faversham and Mid Kent seat, looking at her most recent election result; she retained the seat in 2024 with a very low 31.8% vote (Labour 28.6%; Reform 21.2%). Leaving aside the politics, I have to commend that citizen for his garden (and flag!). An unaesthetic bungalow with a postage-stamp lawn, but his little trees and bushes have made a real difference. When I returned to the UK after a spell in Rhodesia, aged not quite 21, in 1977, I had no serious (well they were taken seriously, back then…) educational qualifications such as “A” Levels or a degree (having dropped out of school aged 16). I did not start to acquire such exam-pass qualifications until I was in my mid-twenties. However, it was very easy in those days to pick up casual/temporary low-level jobs in warehouses, factories, Post Office sorting facilities (heaving sacks of mail around) etc. You really had only to apply, in most cases. That was then.
Later, I acquired a law degree, then a Bar qualification (in fact, two, being Bar of England and Wales and the Bar of the State of New York, as well as a couple of “comity admissions” in other jurisdictions.
Terrible architecture (the new one; the older one merely undistinguished), but the worst thing is that Nature had a little space or haven there previously; now none.
I saw “Maureen Lipman” trending on Twitter/X today, and thought that perhaps she was at last going to make good on her much-repeated “threat” (or should that be “promise”?) to leave the UK by reason of “antisemitism” here, and go to live in either Israel or the USA. Sadly, no. It all has to do with some trivial storm in a teacup in a Scottish theatre.

I have just watched 22 July, a 2018 Netflix production about the 2011 massacre and bombing in Norway carried out by Anders Breivik.
Overall impression: quite well made, but very slow in the last hour [143 minutes in all].
As to Breivik and his action, I was not blogging in 2011, so have never written anything substantial about all that. I did blog about the rather similar attack which happened in New Zealand in 2019:

Equally if not more seriously, that lady has apparently learned nothing from the fact that her ex-husband, one-time MP for Poole, lost his seat in 2024 (thus also depriving the lady in question of a fairly well-paid job as part of his office staff, though they were divorced long ago). She now pretends to run something called The Moderates, which I (perhaps uncharitably) think has a “membership” about the same as the number of empty bottles in her kitchen or cellar, and quite possibly no members at all.
Part of the reason Rishi Sunak did so badly at GE 2024 is because he is Indian, but another major factor (of several) was that, for one year, 2021/2022, he paused the Triple Lock, making pensioners worse off. He reinstated it before GE 2024, but by then the damage was done.
A very large proportion of the Conservative Party vote in 2024, as always in the past, consisted of people over 60. Many former Con voters, though, did not vote, or voted Reform. The Con Party has not recovered, and will (in my opinion) never recover. Abandoning the Triple Lock would hammer in the final nail.
Now, bearing in mind that the Con Party is already usually opinion-polling below 20%, imagine the reaction from the pensioner voters were the Con Party to abandon the Triple Lock; Con Party support would decline to around 15%, maybe even to 10%, and the party be all but wiped out.
The same is true of Labour, though. Labour polling is already on or nearly on life support. Getting rid of the Triple Lock would dent the surviving Labour vote very considerably. At GE 2024, 20% of voters aged 70+ were still voting Labour, as were 28% of voters aged 60-69.
So far, Reform has pledged to retain the Triple Lock, thus locking-in a good proportion of that crucial 60+ age-group vote.
Look at the Con Party. Led by a Nigerian woman (that, alone…) who is a finance-capitalist stooge completely in the pocket of the Israel/Jewish lobby, and who only has a British passport because her parents deliberately had her born in London (only staying for a few days in 1980).
Are many people going to vote Con, either at the next GE or in the 7 May 2026 local elections? I doubt it.
