Regular readers of the blog will be aware that I have blogged in recent days about the very unjust prosecution, conviction, and sentence visited upon Sam Melia and, consequently, upon his wife, Laura Towler, and their children (one very young, the other expected to be born sometime in the next few weeks).
I am not a member of Patriotic Alternative, and am personally unacquainted with the couple, but this is a disgraceful persecution, not merely an unjust prosecution.

Some fellow whose voice betrayed his smug certainty of knowing “the truth”…That person managed to get away with several meaningless statements such as “populism is Right Wing” (“rightwing” stopped being a useful descriptor decades if not centuries ago), finishing up with the assertion that “populists” were trying to “latch on to anti-lockdown protests” but that would not help the “populists” because it put them in the same place as “the nutters who think that the virus is caused by 5G“.
Well, I don’t think that many imagine that “the virus” is or was caused by 5G, though there seems to be at least some evidence that 5G has deleterious health effects. After all, the public were told for decades that high-tension power lines caused no health problems. Now?
Not understanding why something happens is not the same as something not happening.
Moving back to “populism”, I think that it is true that mere populism is usually short-lived, built as it is on the shifting sands of public opinion. Without ideological structure, a populist protest movement is a jellybag and cannot create anything lasting. Look at the graph below. The bottom left/right axis indicates deaths per million “from” (i.e. “with”) Coronavirus in each country. The absolute numbers on the up/down axis are not useful, because, obviously, the USA and Brazil have hugely greater populations than Belgium, Sweden etc. The graph shows clearly that countries that have had fierce or fairly fierce “lockdown” regimes (Britain, Spain, Italy, Belgium etc), have had far worse death outcomes than not only Sweden but also Brazil and, indeed, the USA.
The “increase in cases” now seen here and there can be attributed mainly to increase in testing. Yes, there are in many places “upsurges” in Coronavirus, but that is not very relevant, because most people “with Coronavirus” have few and mild symptoms, or no symptoms. The death rate is still falling everywhere, even on the sort of flawed statistics we have seen in the UK, such as people “assumed” to have died “from” (“with”) the virus, etc.

It is clear from the above graph that the virus peaked in England and Wales in early to mid April, since when it has been steadily decreasing.
The conclusion is inescapable: the UK “lockdown” (shutdown) which was instituted by a panicked and incompetent Government on the advice of incompetent scientific advisers (particularly the egregious Professor Ferguson), was not only unnecessary but also has come close to collapsing the UK economy, as well as destroying whatever confidence the public had in government, police, “experts”, the law and the NHS.
As far as Professor Ferguson is concerned, he is very fortunate that he does not live in Stalin’s Russia. He would have been shot. No question.
Peter Hitchens, one of the few scribblers to stand up to the panic and propaganda, thinks that the governmental reaction is a result of incompetence, not deliberate imposition of the skeleton of a police state. Saw a film on TV starring Nicole Kidman, Queen of the Desert [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queen_of_the_Desert_(film) ], about the English explorer and pioneering traveller, Gertrude Bell [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gertrude_Bell]. She helped to draw, with others whom she got to know, such as Lawrence of Arabia (T.E. Lawrence), the map of the Middle East as it was from the 1920s through to the present day, or at least until very recently.
The film was a quality production, but slow. It is more like, in the American phrase, an “art-house movie”, than anything likely to achieve box-office popularity. It was a major financial flop in 2015, I have now read.
I found the film quite compelling though, if you stick with it. At the end, rather moving.
Huw Merriman MP
In one of the ad breaks of the above-named film, I saw a few minutes of Sky News. A scruffy-looking MP hitherto unknown to me, Huw Merriman [Con, Bexhill and Battle], was speaking. I did not hear the whole of his interview, but what I did hear sounded rather dull. I looked him up on Wikipedia etc out of mere curiosity:
I see that he attended a Secondary Modern school (I did not know that some were still operating under that title as late as the 1980s), and then Durham University. Called to the Bar sometime around 1995, he seems to have practised briefly in criminal law before leaving the practising Bar to become an employed lawyer somewhere. He worked as a salaried in-house lawyer for 17 years until elected to the very safe seat of Bexhill and Battle in 2015.
He also seems to have been “economical with the truth” about his in-house lawyer role. He gives the impression that he was somehow appointed to “sort out” the mess at Lehman Brothers, after its collapse. Elsewhere though, I have read that he was working for Lehman Brothers itself, in earlier years. Maybe he was appointed to the latter role because of the former one. At any rate, and whatever the facts about that, his latter-day “consultancy” with the liquidators apparently pulled in (does it still?) £160,000 a year, according to the BBC: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-sussex-32891604

On the face of it, Merriman does not seem to be a particularly nice person, and I see that his Parliamentary career has stalled. He started to climb the Government ladder in the 2010-2015 Parliament by being appointed PPS, latterly to the then Chancellor, Philip Hammond. However, he now holds no Government appointment:

Coronavirus
It is clear that the former epidemic/pandemic has tailed off now in the UK. We shall never know for sure, but it seems most likely that Coronavirus swept through unnoticed in the first month or two of 2020 (possibly even December 2019), but that most people had no symptoms, or mild symptoms. Others were probably misdiagnosed (“all clap now…”) before the new virus was publicized. The “lockdown” was unnecessary, apart from nasty “clubs”, pubs, mass entertainment and sporting events, and the Underground and buses (which never were stopped, though dim Sadiq Khan reduced the number of trains, and coaches on trains, so making infection far more likely!).
Now, the government of fools is busy slamming shut stable doors after the horses have bolted.

As a child in the early to mid-1960s, I was only ever given Lucozade (the original one, in a large glass bottle with yellow cellophane wrapping) when unwell. It was thought to aid recovery and maybe it did, because it was indeed high in glucose. Where the tweeter above goes wrong is in saying that Lucozade caused obesity. Hardly. Most children only had about 2 bottles a year, if that!

After years of mixed reviews, the truth has hit: the NHS is now basically incapable of dealing at all with the most serious public health danger for decades, possibly since 1918.

people with the virus or who think that they may have it are asked to “self-isolate”, i.e. protect others and society as a whole by staying in their homes (so far, no red crosses are to be painted on their doors…), but for the sufferers themselves, for those that live with them (and the UK has a huge amount of shared occupancy and crowded housing) there is no help, not from the NHS, not from the medical profession, not from the State itself.

I have noticed in the past couple of years that quite a few of those who have engaged in persecuting me, denouncing me to various authorities and snooping on me, as well as insulting me on Twitter, have died or are fast declining by reason of terminal medical conditions. Not a few are also mentally disturbed.
I have just seen today that yet another one has apparently shuffled off the mortal coil.
