I still see people on Twitter/X shouting loudly for “Scottish Independence”, but it is pretty clear that the wish to break away from the UK, i.e. from England, is waning north of the border.
I do not purport to know Scottish politics in detail but, to me, there was always something very odd about the “Indy” noise. For a start, how could Scotland really be “independent” in any meaningful way while (as the SNP and Alba parties wanted) it remained in, or returned to, the EU, maybe NATO too, and would still be under the Western finance-capital blanket (IMF, World Bank and the rest)? What does “independence” really mean, or look like?
The SNP/Alba idea of Independence always seemed to me rather old-fashioned somehow, a bit like Irish Home Rule and “Independence” in the 19th and early 20th centuries.
Then there is the SNP and Alba idea that to be “Scottish” you either have to be born there, or maybe even just live there, like the black/brown immigrants they “welcomed” and continue to encourage. So they are saying that a Pakistani who was born in, or maybe just arrived in, Scotland, is closer to the (real) Scots than an Englishman in London (or even Berwick-upon-Tweed)? Mad.
The SNP is now going to plateau electorally, at best, after the Sturgeon financial scandals etc. Flash in the pan. A handful of Commons seats until 2015, a massive upsurge that year (56 out of 59), then a slight decline until the disaster of 2024 (9 out of 57). Amusing. Something similar once happened on a Caribbean island where I lived, though it all blew up a couple of months before I arrived; I was told about it by a colleague.
Apparently, the defaulter was a pilot, a native of another island. He flew for a regional airline. He crashed his plane on one island or another (I do not recall what I was told, exactly; I think maybe St. Lucia) and he was killed, along with about 30 passengers and crew. Cannabis and cocaine were said to have been found in his body.
After his death, his wife was sorting through his belongings (not where she lived) and found the video tapes (this was about 25 or 26 years ago).
It turned out that the deceased pilot had, er, had literally dozens of prominent women on the island where I later lived. His wife made sure that copies of the tape were sent to several people. Soon, everyone had seen or heard of those tapes.
As my colleague later told me, these were women one met on a daily basis, such as the tall, sunglasses-wearing, woman police sergeant who conducted my driving test (I did not usually drive myself around until I arrived on that island and had no choice).
Other women involved were almost all of those who worked at the small airport on the island (as immigration officials, canteen staff, cleaners etc), the local schoolteachers, wives of the officiants at several of the (many) local churches etc. Apparently, bananas (literal bananas) featured in some of the tapes.
It all caused an enormous upheaval on an island where people tended to know everyone.
Reverting to Equatorial Guinea, I have never been there, and have only met a couple of people who have. Having said that, when I was a mere 18 years of age, in 1975, I had the idea of invading the island. A couple of boys my own age were my co-planners in that mad idea, which of course never went anywhere.
I had a large pilot’s map of the island (bought from Stanford’s in Covent Garden) and the nearby/not nearby bit of Africa where the larger part of the country (the former Spanish colony of Spanish Guinea, independent since 1968) was located. The island of Fernando Po (now, Bioko) was where the capital, Santa Isabel (now, Malabo) was. The island is about 3x the size of the Isle of Wight, and the whole country is slightly larger than Wales.
I twice met the (now long-deceased) Conservative MP, Harold Soref, in connection with my doomed plan, once at the Carlton Club and once at the original St. James’ Club in Piccadilly. I do not know who will win. At present it looks quite open, though Kamala Harris is, more than Trump, looking like the favourite.
For me, it is almost incredible that anyone could vote for a semi-educated and non-white woman such as Kamala Harris, even as compared to a man such as Donald Trump, with all his flaws.
However, one always has to consider the very low level of education and culture among the vast bulk of Americans. Also, the unbelievably naive and simplistic motivations for voting. I saw some silly old woman on TV news a couple of days ago, seriously (in her own little mind) saying that she had never voted before, but was going to vote for Kamala Harris because…Kamala Harris is a woman. That old woman voter is not alone. There are millions, maybe tens of millions, who will vote for Kamala Harris purely on the basis of her sex.
Likewise, it can be surmised that there are further tens of millions, almost all non-white, who will vote for Kamala Harris because she is non-white. While her husband Nicholas Joicey, a senior civil servant, is believed to have let his central London two-bed flat since 2011. It now has a market rental value of nearly £3,000 a month, according to property website Bricks&Logic.

The Chancellor bought her family home in 2012 with her husband for £599,950. The two co-own the property, according to the Land Registry. The couple’s detached property – which was bought with a mortgage – consists of four bedrooms and two bathrooms, according to Rightmove.
Since Ms Reeves bought it, property listing websites estimate it has gained around £349,000 in value – putting its value today at nearly £950,000.
Nine years ago, Ms Reeves had her parliamentary credit card suspended because she owed more than £4,000 in unauthorised payments. The bill was eventually recouped by the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority.

It does occur to me that, with the increasing pressure in the UK on animals, birds, fish, and insects, so many of which are now vulnerable or endangered, one possible answer might be to establish completely rewilded zones, perhaps 5 of them in England, and a smaller number but similar proportion in Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland.
I have not fully thought-out the idea, so these are just stray ideas at present.
Such rewilded zones would go beyond the various existing zone-regimes such as Green Belt, National Park, Site of Special Scientific Interest etc.
The idea would be for such zones to be changed from whatever land use presently exists to a completely wild forest. New building would be banned, and existing housing gradually reduced. There would be no industry and no large-scale agriculture or horticulture.
The above requirements suggest that areas already sparsely-inhabited would be chosen.
As for the size of such rewilded zones, I am thinking in terms of about the same size of circumference as the M25, i.e. the Greater London area. About 5 of those in England, perhaps 2 in Scotland, 1 in Wales and 1 in Northern Ireland.
Traffic would be very restricted over time, roads not open to the public (eventually). The zones to be linked with each other and other countryside areas by the kind of wildlife grid I have proposed over recent years.

I am old enough to remember those little shops. One in particular, in Caversham Heights, near Reading, early 1960s. The sweets were dispensed by the owner, I think an otherwise-retired old fellow, who sold them in small white-paper bags. A wide range, but I either bought small boiled sweets (very small balls of hard candy), or a kind of chewing gum that came with collectable cards depicting (and explaining) battles of the American Civil War of the 1860s. I wanted the cards, not the gum.
Very gory, those cards (as I discovered only when I belatedly read law, 20 years later) were the subject of a legal case (as to whether they counted as “obscene” because of their bloodsoaked content), which case went as high as the House of Lords (House of Lords Judicial Committee, the forerunner of the present UK Supreme Court). That was around 1965, only a couple of years after I used to buy the cards.
I remember that all my friends (who also bought the cards) favoured the Confederate side, but I (alone, I think) favoured the Union. Not sure now, over 60 years later, whether that was because the Union side was more efficient, or more advanced in weaponry, or just because I wanted to go contrary to the views of the mob.
The sweetshop in question was actually made out of the front part of an ordinary late-19thC house, which (I see from Google maps and streetview) has now reverted to being just a house again.
I also remember the little sweetshop because, aged about 7, I sheltered in that tiny shop after I (God knows why, now, but it would have been in self-defence) hit another boy, and then was sought out by the much older, and rather fearsome, brother of the same. In the end, the older boy caught me outside but, after I explained that I had hit his brother in self-defence, he was very reasonable, and let me off. Maybe I had dormant barristerial skills even then (or at least the ability to get out of scrapes)…

There was, in decades past, a discussion to be had about whether Britain could “punch above its weight”, partly via the Commonwealth. Soft power etc.
One is reminded of how the late great Maurice Oldfield, one-time Chief of SIS/MI6, cultivated foreign students at Oxford or Cambridge likely to become leaders of Commonwealth states. Sometimes, after they had already started on a political-career path. Notably, Lee Kuan Yew of Singapore.
However, such activity is largely the filling in of gaps; a substitute for the real geopolitical power exercised by the British Empire.
As things now are, the Commonwealth seems to be largely a way whereby Britain gives money to those who, increasingly, are rather hostile to the British people whose money they take. Some, such as Mozambique, which never were colonies in the first place, have latched onto British aid by joining the Commonwealth.
Better to cut them all loose now. Take away the ricebowls of the former colonies. Stop playing the convoluted chess defence which Commonwealth diplomacy has become.

I might add that I have noticed that South Wales seems to have a very serious problem with crimes of violence, most of which (in contradistinction to the situation in London and much of England) cannot be lain at the door of the non-European population.
I suppose that the sentence was so lenient (the defendant will be released within 12 months, i.e. 40% of 30 months) because he has lost his job in the police, has been banned from being a policeman in any Welsh or English force for life, and may well be “on the dole” for years after his release.
For the sake of clarity, I do not agree that the wife and mother who got 31 months for a few tweets that few saw and none acted upon should have been imprisoned (or prosecuted at all).

I do not at all keep up with the changes in the legal landscape, and so it happened that I was surprised yesterday to read that Blackfriars Crown Court closed down in 2019. I appeared there as Counsel a couple of times sometime around 1994.
The Financial Times report mentions that 43% of courts in England and Wales were closed to save money, by decision of the government of David Cameron-Levita, after 2010. I was aware of some of them, having myself appeared in them. Ilford County Court, Penzance County Court, Launceston Magistrates’ Court —a court building more like a deserted mausoleum even when I was there, once only, in (?) 2004, on a County Court civil case relocated there from Plymouth County Court for hearing—; Trowbridge County Court. Some other courts too.
I vaguely recall being sent in 1993 to do some trivial criminal matter at Blackfriars Crown Court, a “Mention”, I think (they usually take a matter of minutes, once you are there and being heard).
With typical contemporary stupidity, the new Blackfriars Crown Court had been temporarily designated as “Knightsbridge Crown Court (sitting at Blackfriars Crown Court)“. The brief had been marked simply “In the Knightsbridge Crown Court“. What a wonderful waste of my time…so I initially went to the court I knew as Knightsbridge Crown Court, in Hans Crescent, near Harrods, only to find that that court building was under repair (prior to being sold and repurposed).
Even more stupidly, Blackfriars Crown Court was not in the Blackfriars area on the north bank of the Thames anyway, but down an obscure side street on the south side of the river. Apparently named thus because Blackfriars Road is nearby. What idiots are employed to make such decisions?

No, the British armed forces would have no chance at all of repelling an invasion from, say, the German armed forces as they were in 1940, or the Soviet armed forces as they were circa 1975. Certainly not from the Chinese armed forces, should they somehow gather in Northern France in 2024.
The elephant in the room here, of course, is that the above scenarii are simply not the case. China has no plan to attack Western Europe (inc. UK), the Soviet Union ceased to exist decades ago, and Russia now not only has no intention or wish to invade the UK, but no capability to do so, looking at its less than impressive performance in Ukraine.
As for Germany, the Germany of today is not that of 1940, has no interest in invading the UK, and its armed forces are a tiny fraction of the size of those commanded by Hitler (who anyway had no serious intention of invading the UK even in 1940).

Demonstrations and marches against the madness are OK, but will not, alone, achieve concrete results. In the present conditions of repression of free speech, I prefer to say no more, as yet.
It is clear, though, that the madness cannot continue indefinitely. At some point, this million a year influx (the “small boats” being only a few percent of all immigration) will cause UK society to fall apart.
The Commonwealth is largely a waste of time and money, and always was. A replacement of lesser binding than the Empire, to some extent a consolation for the Monarch (notably, of course, the late Queen): no longer an Empress or Emperor, but still “Head of the Commonwealth”.

The Arabs are mostly gagging to become part of “the West”— surely that is obvious. The only thing that impedes such a development is the existence of the Israeli state. Were the USA to stop supporting Israel, a huge reset of the region would be possible.
Iran, Muslim but not Arab, might be the exception, but would probably come to terms.

According to what I have seen on Twitter/X, the young activist David R. Morgan (@david_r_morgan on Twitter/X) has been arrested by “anti-terror” police after complaints made by the (((usual))) troublemakers.
While I do not agree with everything he posts (manner rather than substance, though, in most cases), to be arrested merely for (as it seems) having posted some satirical cartoons etc would be yet another ludicrous misuse of police “anti-terror” powers in the UK.
Reminiscent of the persecution of satirical singer-songwriter Alison Chabloz and others in previous years.

I have just finished A View from the Foothills: The Diaries of Chris Mullin, bought a while ago in paperback for about 20p from a supermarket charity shelf, and read slowly, a few pages a day, in the car.
In those diaries (quite interesting, but not as fascinating as the more famous ones of Alan Clark: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alan_Clark#Diaries), Mullin recalls having visited the “anti-social behaviour” police in his own constituency; a pleasant enough group, but spending much if not all of their time in their office, rarely covering the ground where anti-social behaviour was actually happening.

I have just watched part of a Sky News interview; Starmer interviewed by Beth Rigby.
Starmer was utterly pathetic as he was asked to define the “working people” his government and Rachel Reeves’ budget was intended to help. He said “in my mind’s eye” about 5 times even in the few minutes while I was watching and listening.
Starmer does not know what he is doing. A person both nasty and pathetic, as well as totally out of his depth.
