It does occur to me that, with the increasing pressure in the UK on animals, birds, fish, and insects, so many of which are now vulnerable or endangered, one possible answer might be to establish completely rewilded zones, perhaps 5 of them in England, and a smaller number but similar proportion in Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland.
I have not fully thought-out the idea, so these are just stray ideas at present.
Such rewilded zones would go beyond the various existing zone-regimes such as Green Belt, National Park, Site of Special Scientific Interest etc.
The idea would be for such zones to be changed from whatever land use presently exists to a completely wild forest. New building would be banned, and existing housing gradually reduced. There would be no industry and no large-scale agriculture or horticulture.
The above requirements suggest that areas already sparsely-inhabited would be chosen.
As for the size of such rewilded zones, I am thinking in terms of about the same size of circumference as the M25, i.e. the Greater London area. About 5 of those in England, perhaps 2 in Scotland, 1 in Wales and 1 in Northern Ireland.
Traffic would be very restricted over time, roads not open to the public (eventually). The zones to be linked with each other and other countryside areas by the kind of wildlife grid I have proposed over recent years.

Partly-true, but the State could control pay if that were required (which I think it now is): set limits for pay, with exceptions for genuine inventor-entrepreneurs such as Dyson. While researching on Wikipedia today, I noticed that the now long-deceased aunt of a one-time girlfriend had once been one of the governors of the BBC. I knew that she had been a life peer, but not that she had been on the BBC Board of Governors. Saw a few other things about her that I did not previously know. In many cases, the women have posed as charity workers with clipboards and have stolen watches from their victims without them realising as they sign a petition.
However, other times they have been less subtle and simply ripped the expensive timepieces off the men’s wrists.
This time the pair approached the man outside his home in Links Road, Poole, which is next to £2,000-a-year Parkstone Golf Club, at lunchtime on Tuesday.
They asked him to sign a petition and then one of the women thanked and hugged him. He did not notice until a few minutes later that his watch had been taken.
‘Be mindful of being approached’
A spokesman from Dorset Police said: “It is believed that these females are responsible for a series of similar thefts across Dorset this year and the public should be mindful of being approached in this manner or engaging in conversation with the individuals.”
The pair are believed to have struck in Dorset at least seven times before in Poole, Wimborne, Wareham, Ferndown, Highcliffe and Poundbury.
Hampshire Police said they have at least 10 victims, and two brothers, aged 85 and 91, were targeted 80 miles apart in Gloucestershire and Surrey.
Both women are said to be aged in their 20s or 30s and between 5ft 2ins and 5ft 9ins tall. They both have dark hair and Eastern European accents although some victims have believed them to be Spanish.

Oddly enough, I was just looking, not long ago, on Google maps and Google Earth, at the area of Sydney, Australia, where I lived, in the late 1960s, for 2-3 years as a child of 10-13 (Ellalong Road, Mosman/Cremorne and, for the first 6 months or so, Wyong Road, Mosman). Also, the area around the nearby little school that I attended at first (Middle Harbour PS, at Macpherson Street, Mosman; I was later at North Sydney Boys’ High, a few miles away, for 7-8 months).
Many changes. I notice that quite a few roads, including Ellalong, have been made into dead ends to prevent through traffic. A good move. Other changes? Well, quite a few houses there in the late 1960s have been demolished and replaced by much larger ones; larger houses, smaller gardens. Google Earth shows that almost every house in that neighbourhood now has a swimming pool. In 1967-69, not many did.
I notice a change in street vegetation. Far more small trees and flowering bushes, as far as I can recall. Fewer palm trees, though. There seems to have been, perhaps, a move to native species, and to more green/flowering trees, though the tall imperial palms near my old school are still there.
Overall, I should say that that neighbourhood is rather more scenic now, because of the flowering abundance, though with far more cars, both moving and parked on the street (if I remember aright, street parking was unusual when I lived there). Looking at the pictures, an impression of greater wealth overall, perhaps.
That was also true of Balmoral Beach (which was the nearest convenient beach to us, about 5-10 mins in the car). Many cafes, and a more manicured look generally.

If Corbyn Labour got about 32% of the popular vote at the 2019 General Election (the Conservative Party nearly 44%), then any new Corbyn party would probably get about 15% at best. When I first had a Twitter account, a decade ago, I began to tweet, inter alia, about the need for a wildlife grid in the UK. I meant a grid of strips or parcels of land, even if very narrow in places, that would link larger areas full of wildlife, such as woods, forests, national parks etc.
That idea is even more important today. I am heartened that, since I started to tweet and, later, blog about it, others have taken up the idea; some are well-connected, wealthy, famous. I think that, eventually, something can be done.
My concept was not nationalization of those strips of land, but a voluntary co-operation, co-ordinated for the sake of convenience and efficiency, but the ownership remaining, in most cases, in private hands, at least initially.

The area where I spent much of my childhood, the border of South Oxfordshire and Berkshire, near Reading, as now seen on Google Earth, exhibits the kind of changes that are all too common: high hedges replaced, usually by sterile fencing, some gardens in front of houses turned into gravelled or even concrete car parking. Sad. Why do people spend what is now the best part of a million pounds on a house in a leafy area, where suburb meets country, only to aesthetically trash their own house and gardens? Just to save a little inconvenience trimming the hedges? To save the cost of hiring a man to trim the hedges? It’s so tawdry…

When Tompkins, then a fairly famous fellow in the UK, founded Argos in 1972, the conventional wisdom of the “experts”(newspaper business pundits etc) was that Tompkins was a bit of a maverick or even loony, not a serious businessman, and who had bitten off more than he could chew.
