I was hoping, some years ago, that Mercer would prove to be an improvement on the all-too-often-seen MPs who put their duty behind their own financial or career benefit.
Unfortunately, as an MP, Mercer has been a big disappointment. First of all, it seems that he is, at least to a large extent, motivated by money. Criticism has been made of his making a considerable sum from commercial and/or “charitable” activities outside his work and position as an MP. His expenses have also been criticized.
Quite apart from the above, Mercer has had the “distinction” of having been sacked as a minister by the two previous Prime Ministers, first by Boris Johnson, and then by Liz Truss, the latter of which triggering a tweet by Mercer’s wife (employed by him on his Parliamentary expenses, incidentally), which tweet described Liz Truss (admittedly not unfairly) as “an imbecile“.
Presumably, Madame Mercer did not like the fact that Mercer (and so she too) thereby lost a ministerial salary of about £71,000 or so, per year (paid on top of MP salary and expenses).
Well, Mercer is now back in Government, as Minister of State for Veterans’ Affairs (the UK now using the American-style term “veteran” for someone who has served, however briefly, in the armed forces).
I daresay that few would call Mercer himself “brilliant“. Ruth Smeeth (now “Baroness” Anderson) has worked for BICOM, the overseas propaganda org supporting the Israeli state and government. She is, and/or has, also been involved with the malicious and basically Jewish “anti-fascist” org called “Hope not Hate”, and (I think) the even less pleasant “UAF” (“United Against Fascism”).
Ruth Smeeth is a member of Labour Friends of Israel, and was a major part of the anti-Corbyn campaign which, as noted previously in this blog, was effectively a Jewish campaign to remove Corbyn as Labour leader, a campaign crowned with success when Corbyn was replaced by Jewish lobby and/or Israel lobby puppet, Keir Starmer.

I fear however, that he is, also, not much good, as his having been fired by two successive Prime Ministers would seem to indicate (albeit that “Boris”-idiot and Liz Truss were both also useless).

Mercer won his seat from Labour fairly narrowly in 2015, getting 37.6% of votes cast; the constituency was only created in 2010. In 2017, Mercer’s vote-share jumped to 51.9%. The 2019 election saw a further increase, to 60.7%. Driving factors may have been the LibDem collapse (16.9% in 2010, as low as 2% in 2017, and only 5.2% in 2019), the collapse and disappearance of UKIP (21.5% in 2015 but not even standing in Plymouth Moor View in 2019), and Labour’s decline (in 2019, 31.5%).
As to whether Mercer will retain his seat at the next general election, in 2023 or 2024, that is an open question, though it seems quite likely.

A corollary is that all these fields have increasingly become provinces of the wealthy, because post-graduate education is expensive, and is now a gamble: it comes with no guarantee of a job in the relevant field.
(I think there was a golden age of literacy, between roughly 1850 and 1950 – the reading public was ever growing, and reading ever more, and serious writers could both emerge from and speak to this wide public.
There's nothing wrong with this, as a type of serious intellectual formation, but it's a problem if it's the 𝘰𝘯𝘭𝘺 type of intellectual formation that can actually grant entry to the public sphere.
If we no longer have public thinkers sustained by a public readership, but rather only post-graduate-degree holders sustained by institutions, we have restricted intellectual respect to a class for whom deference to expertise and to authority are often second nature.
To be sure, there is cause for hope in the emergence, outside the approved public sphere, of a reasoned, multi-faceted and persisent Covid counter-narrative.
And I fear this pattern will repeat itself again and again, until the gap between blinkered expertise and addled ignorance is filled, or that gap leads to such ruination as to make the problem irrelevant.

When I was a practising barrister (1993-2008, though with extended breaks when I was overseas or engaged elsewhere), conducting hearings by video link had either not yet started, or was in its infancy; certainly I never encountered it, though I did some telephone hearings in latter years, usually from home. They involved civil/commercial interlocutory and/or procedural matters. Awkward when the cats miaowed loudly.
I should add that, after the early/mid 1990s, I did almost no criminal cases, except the odd corporate matter, representing large companies accused of breaching the law in various —mostly rather minor— ways.
Now, however, video link hearings in criminal cases are commonplace, especially in respect of sentencing hearings. It saves money, and inconvenience. But…
I think that sentencings especially (but also any examination or cross-examination of witnesses, including the accused) should always be carried out face-to-face in open court. The judge can see, a relatively few feet away, the demeanour of the person talking, in a way that is just not the same via video link, however good the technology.
Can it really be right that a defendant be sentenced, often to a term of years, while in a prison and at the end of a video link? I think not.

The Conservative Party has been held up until very recently by two factors: Brexit (despite that having been totally mishandled), and the fact that pensioners and near-pensioners (broadly, the 60+ age group) voted Conservative, overwhelmingly.
Rishi Sunak suspended the Triple Lock, “for a year” supposedly. That alone diminished the support for the Conservative Party. Labour climbed above Conservative in the opinion polls for the first time in years. Sunak failed to become Conservative Party leader and Prime Minister because the “grey vote” within the Conservative Party defected to Liz Truss, who promised almost everyone almost everything.
Now we see that even the “grey vote” is abandoning the Conservative Party, as I have been recently predicting. If your only real reasons to vote “Conservative”, as a 60+-aged voter, are a. the value of State pensions and benefits (including Pension Guarantee Credit); b. to stop or restrict mass immigration; and c. law and order, then the Conservative Party has let you down royally on all three.
This would be the moment for a social-national party to strike, if there were one. The absence of one is both infuriating (for me) and tragic (for the British people and their future).

The unexpected —by some— degree of support for Johnson is a political grasping at straws. Look at the Conservative Party standing in the opinion polls. 14%! Even if that level of voter intent were to double by the time of a general election, it would still result in a massive Labour victory; and there is no guarantee that voter intentions will improve for the Conservative Party.
The MPs backing Johnson are doing so because they do not believe that any but a smallish minority of the British electorate will vote for a party led by a globalist Indian billionaire. “Boris” (though in fact not entirely English) looks and sounds at least sort-of English, is a known quantity even if useless, and so is “the Devil you know”, and has to be more popular with some of the public (if only as a clown or jester) than Sunak.

I should say that she has her defenders, people who seem to have elected her a kind of “Queen of Poverty Britain”. They themselves are very rarely poor, and many in fact seem rather comfortably-off. I question how many actually use her often very peculiar recipes. They seem to support her in a kind of unthinking way because she is perceived to be “anti-austerity” etc, though one could argue that saying (as she does, however absurdly) that someone can live on £5 a week, actually plays into the hands of such as Iain Dunce Duncan Smith and Therese Coffey.
All the same, Ms. Monroe has had published over half a dozen books and, apparently, has made £90,000 (and counting, continuing royalties taken into account) out of them. She also appears on TV shows, gives interviews etc
It seems to me that some people need a “hero” or “heroine”, even a fake one, and those people will shut their eyes to the seeming fact that they are perhaps being taken for a ride.
Many of her supporters also seem to like her “LGBTQXYZ” persona.
800+ people were apparently sending “Jack Monroe” between £3.50 and £44 a month via the Patreon donation website; about 700 still are, it seems (and the maximum suggested amount is now reduced to £10). Still, keeping with the Essex argot, “a nice little earner“, on the face of it.
The problem is or was that it seems that many of those donating received few if any of the items promised in return.
Search for “Jack Monroe” or “Bootstrap Cook” on Twitter, and you will see many of the arguments around her.
For myself, and as I wrote in that assessment, I do not think that she actually set out to defraud anyone, but she has obviously not delivered on her promises, as least to quite a few people.
As for the whole “eat well on 70p a day” idea, it just does not stack up. I am sure (well, it sounds plausible, anyway) that some of her recipes and ideas help some people. Far too many people in the UK live off takeaways and/or unnecessarily expensive packaged foods. However, no-one in the UK can live —even frugally— on less than about £3 a day for food (at minimum), and it is dishonest of someone with a public platform to suggest otherwise. £5 a week for food is certainly “for the birds”.
Some of her recipes are on such a level as “boil an egg, mash it up with mayonnaise, spread it on bread“. Similar to that, anyway. Well, thank you, Escoffier!
There again, the whole “Bootstrap Cook” thing was originally about how someone living off Britain’s pitifully-small basic State benefits could survive, and it is hard to maintain that ethos once you have thousands of pounds a month coming in on a regular basis, and tens of thousands in the bank.
I have never met anyone who reads the Observer who has not been affluent. (actually, one scarcely ever meets an Observer reader anyway, the newspaper has such a low circulation).

Only about 20%-25% of UK voters are now intending to vote Conservative next time, so say the opinion polls. That 20%-25% bloc is composed almost entirely of pensioners, and is the real hard core of the Conservative general election vote. Alienate that bloc, make them abstain or vote elsewhere, and the Conservative Party vote will collapse to 10% at top. Only a handful, or a few dozen, Con Party seats would remain. Ironically, as said earlier, one of the few left standing, like a pillar of salt, would be that of Liz Truss herself.

One thing becoming apparent. A lot of Tory MPs have watched too much West Wing. They think they can game the current crisis to their own personal advantage. And they can’t. Politics doesn’t work like that. The country is actually watching this fiasco. And it’s giving up on them.

Look at this “shitshow“, to quote the open-mouthed Johnny Mercer. The Conservative Party was always admired for its ruthlessness in getting rid of unwanted leaders. Is it now falling short even in that?
Interesting Constitutional point too, that occurs to me: in principle, a general election need only be held within 5 years of the last one, so long as a prime minister can command the confidence of the House (Bagehot), so in principle Truss can be replaced by another Con MP who can rely on that large Con majority in the Commons. However, these circumstances of October 2022 are unusual.
Only the King can prorogue Parliament, and does so on the advice of the Prime Minister. What if Liz Truss refuses to vacate her office, and advises the King that she should remain, in circumstances where it is doubtful that she holds the confidence of even her own side? That might place the King in a very difficult Constitutional position: a choice between proroguing Parliament in effect on his own judgment and against PM’s advice, or not proroguing and then forcing the Commons to vote on confidence.
In such a circumstance, would the Conservative MPs vote “no confidence” in Liz Truss? That would mean a general election in which, on present polling, all but 50-150 out of 357 would lose their seats. Are they that altruistic? Most not, I think.
On the other hand, were those Con MPs to vote that they have confidence in Liz Truss, then no general election, but they would be stuck with her for at least a year, and possibly until the next general election, at least in my view. Awkward.
The new and as yet uncrowned King may find himself taking, or having to take, a far more active role in a party-political matter than he might prefer.
I did of course read Constitutional Law, at degree level, but would, naturally, not hold out myself as being in any way expert. Perhaps there are others, more erudite, who can solve the conundrum. If so, the comments section is open to the ocean.

The system of selecting candidates and getting them (supposedly) “elected” as MPs, then ministers, then Prime Minister, is at fault. Anyone with real ideas has little chance; anyone opposed to the Jew-Zionist supremacist agenda/conspiracy is quickly weeded out.
The result is that the Liz Truss’s, the Theresa Coffeys, the Kwasi Kwartengs, the James Cleverlys, the “Boris”-idiots, the Theresa Mays, the David Cameron-Levitas become MPs, ministers, even Prime Minister, despite obvious lack of ability.

I have been unable to verify the latter comment, but it is true that Wikipedia does not mention the class of degree obtained by Liz Truss, which I somehow think it would if she had obtained a First, or even a Second.
Not that the level of degree matters hugely anyway: plenty of idiots actually get “good” degrees, especially those who, like Liz Truss, were at university since the great dumbing-down and award-inflation (i.e. since the early 1990s). However, if it is true that Truss got only a Pass degree at a time when awards were already being inflated (she graduated in 1996), then that is certainly unimpressive.
As a matter of fact, Liz Truss did not have, as tweeter @habib_jenny” claims, “20 years of financial dealing” prior to becoming an MP (an accomplishment achieved at least partly on her back). She was employed in business for only 9 years, at least 5 of which she spent at a junior or very junior level.
What about her chances of surviving as Prime Minister? Almost zero, but the fact is that to remove her by force, i.e. to compel her to go, there would have to be a change in the rules pertaining to no-confidence votes in the 1922 Committee, then a period during which MPs can send in no-confidence letters, then a vote. In theory, I suppose that that could all be accomplished within a week, if they pushed it.
The talk now seems to be that MPs would want to change the 1922 Committee rules, cutting out of the election the party’s rank-and-file members (mostly elderly, mostly comfortably-off or affluent). The membership consists of about 172,000 persons. Liz Truss was elected by about 81,000 of those who voted (about 4/5ths of the members voted).
Cutting out the ordinary members would have several results, one of which would be that MPs could install whomsoever they like, without having to think about whether that candidate might be acceptable to the rank-and-file membership. So probably someone that the MPs like and who might be (thought) acceptable to UK voters as a whole, rather than to the narrow electorate of elderly and unrepresentative Con Party members.
I imagine that, if Jeremy Hunt were to become Con Party leader, he would present (rightly or wrongly) a less threatening face to the UK voters. On the other hand, it may be that the aim is to install a non-white, as I have blogged recently, in which case it might be Sunak. There might even be a false choice presented: Sunak and another non-white (surely not loony Ayn Rand devotee and Pakistani pro-Israel fanatic, Sajid Javid?).
Any new leader of the Con Party will be perceived as having no popular mandate whatever, just as Liz Truss has no mandate. However, will that new leader want to call a general election when public “voting intention” is running as low as 19% re. Conservatives? That might mean that the only Con Party MPs that survived would be in the most heavily or hard-core non-marginal seats. That might be as few as 100. The next leader of the Con Party, and thus Prime Minister, might decide that general election prospects now are so hopeless for the Con Party that the situation could get no worse even if a general election were to be held at the last minute, in November or December 2024. Indeed, a lot can happen in 2 years. The Con Party might still lose the election, but not so badly, arguably. It might be left with 200 MPs, instead of 100, or 50.
Who knows what might happen to put people off Labour-label in 2023 or 2024?

A moot point, but it is clear that the electoral system entrenches the present basically binary choice between two parties whose underlying bases are not as far apart as many imagine.
To state the very obvious, there have been a few changes since 1982. Russia in 2022 is not the Soviet Union in 1982. My impressions: Liz Truss sounds completely without character. Her voice is a near-monotone (my own thought as I listened was “soulless“). Putin gave stability and a semblance of national dignity, but offered no new ideology, just Great Russian or “Muscovite” nationalism, a smattering of Russian Orthodox religion, and a nod or two to the partly-discredited Soviet past.
Only when Russia discovers its new ideology will it rediscover its soul, or vice versa. With that will come cohesion, and then unstoppable power.
Falling pound
We have seen the currency news reported as if it was some unexpected event suddenly falling from the sky. In fact, quite a few people (including me) have been predicting it for at least 2 years.
The whole nonsense around the “pandemic” (panicdemic) led to the UK government throwing around money like a drunken sailor, while closing down much of the economy for 1-2 years. Result— misery.
Yes, having a woolly-headed n****r as Chancellor of the Exchequer, a ridiculous half-caste nincompoop as Foreign Secretary, and above all a stupidly ignorant careerist woman as (posing as) Prime Minister, all triggered this alarming collapse in the value of sterling, but beyond all that there is the strategic question.
Britain was part of a trading bloc. Now it is alone in those terms, and the limited trade deals with Australia, Singapore etc cannot replace the main relationship with the EU. I myself favoured Brexit for several reasons, but it had to be handled properly. It never was. The governments of the past 7 years have made no serious attempt to make Brexit work properly.
It is clear that international forces look at the UK, see it being invaded by armies of breeding non-whites, see the UK’s continuing low productivity, see the lack of a sustainable forward-looking plan, and are running away…
To what extent the situation amounts to an attempt to collapse British society further, in order to further the Coudenhove-Kalergi Plan throughout Europe, is an open question.

The Liz Truss “government” is still defending the reduction in top-rate tax to 40p in the £. The argument is that the reduction will actually result in more tax coming in, in the end. Maybe, maybe not, but what it does do, immediately, is destroy any sentiment (however fake) that “we are all in this together”, i.e. social cohesion, as the highest paid are given a tax break at the very same time that most people are struggling.
Tax experts, economists etc may well argue that inflation hitting the poor and “middle” is not the same field of argument as a tax break for the rich and affluent. Tell that to the poor and “middle” of society. After all, they are, overwhelmingly, the voters.

That’s the Mulatta— on the make; an adventuress worthy of the pen of Thackeray. What, though, of “the Harry formerly known as Prince”? He is always photographed in the shadow of the Mulatta. I have noted in past years his obvious emotional or mental problems, and he has been fortunate in that the Mulatta and her behaviour do take much flak which otherwise might come his way. It seems that his own behaviour is often not polite or pleasant (a problem the Royal Family in general has always had, with the exception of the late Queen and, to a lesser extent, Charles).
This whole “right royal” nonsense must now come to an end. After all, without the “Prince” bit (and all the money), would Harry be more than a not-very-bright junior officer, destined never to rise above captain, or possibly major? He might be something like a driving instructor or, funds permitting, a farmer.
Does Britain really need a “royal family”? I think not. The death of the late Queen has surely drawn a line under that part of history.
As for the Harry and Meghan show, once they are back in California permanently, interest will slowly fade, and they will fill the niche once occupied by Edward Windsor and Mrs Simpson.
I do not think that they will divorce, though. After all, the Mulatta is still a duchess, nominally, and she may find that (and the whole UK royal connection) useful (though I note the reported anger of the couple that they were not to be entitled “Prince and Princess” under the new Charles III regime).

The USA is not alone in having hysterical people, usually women. However, I was once, over 30 years ago, on the bus into Manhattan, when such an incident occurred.
The express buses in my part of New Jersey (near the Jersey Shore) mostly went from the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Manhattan to quite far south, Toms River (halfway between Manhattan and Atlantic City). About 10 stops in all. My local stop was the last before Manhattan, going in the other direction. About a one-hour journey or slightly shorter.
I got on such a bus in late afternoon. The bus was quite full. I was the only passenger getting on.
After 45 mins, as we reached the Lincoln Tunnel entrance (to go under the Hudson), the two teenage Jewish boys who had been whispering, and smirking over their shoulders at a fat black woman with a white male companion (wearing a Western jacket and hat) a few rows back, got a shock as the black woman suddenly stood up and started yelling about how she had had enough and was not going to take it any more and how the Jewish teenagers should burn in hell. She however subsided after that, and the rest of the journey concluded in relative peace.
Sadly, even the UK now has many hysterical people and, indeed, many noisy ones, of which many, though far from all, are non-white.
