Strange dream
Like Churchill, I have the habit of having an afternoon nap when possible. Today that came with an odd dream. I was running some political organization, and there was not only some (unidentified) journalist there, but also Nigel Farage.
Upstaging the journalist, Farage had made a grandiloquent offer, that is that he would pay me a million pounds to interview me for some TV show or podcast.
The interview was to take place at an ordinary table on the (maybe) third floor of a building. Just a dull, carpeted space, with a few people (including that journalist) around. Someone else was accompanying Farage.
Farage was about to start when, not quite trusting him, I remarked (in the dream, “urbanely”…) that I was sure that, as a man of business, he would not mind if I asked for the cheque upfront. He started to expostulate evasively. I asked what value of cheque he was willing to give. The answer, after some “umming and arring”, was…£22!
I became angry, dragging Farage from his seat and across the grey-carpeted floor to the window, with him struggling and trying to escape.
As I approached the windows, Farage in my grasp (though struggling to break free), I shouted at him that I had known that he could not be trusted, and that not only should he be chucked out of a window but that I was going to do it!
I then woke up.

I saw an assessment by some British ex-officer that, were the Russian forces to use nuclear weapons (I presume he means tactical ones) in Ukraine, US and UK forces would respond, directly, by wiping out the Russian forces in Ukraine in 2-3 days! Really? What if Putin decided to raze all major Ukrainian cities, especially Kiev, to the ground, using larger, strategic, nuclear missiles? Would US/UK forces still enter Ukraine (presumably only by air power)?
What if the Russians were to take the “Devil’s alternative” and decided to destroy London and a few key airfields, strategic telecoms centres, and ports? At that point, there is no British Army, navy, or air force to speak of, the UK Government would no longer exist, there would be social chaos in Britain, and it would be all but irrelevant that Russian cities and military facilities would also be eliminated.
If the above were to happen, we would be in world war, “Dr. Strangelove” territory, and the USA would be involved both as target and as nuclear attacker.
This is becoming truly dangerous for avoidance of a real nuclear war, both in Europe and beyond. Are the British ruling circles, for example, really willing to risk a nuclear attack on the UK itself just because they want to deny victory to the Russian forces in eastern Ukraine?

The Razor’s Edge
I just wasted 2 hours watching the 1984 remake of the fine 1946 film, The Razor’s Edge, which was based on a novel by Somerset Maugham.
The remake expunged entirely the character of Somerset Maugham himself, who in the 1946 version was both the unseen narrator and also seen in several scenes throughout the film (Somerset Maugham was played by Herbert Marshall: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herbert_Marshall).
Several changes were made, I think not very successfully, in the 1984 version: the film starts at a kind of charity fete, rather than a country club by one of the Great Lakes. The main character, Larry Darrell (played by Bill Murray in the 1984 film, but —far better— by Tyrone Power in the 1946 one) is, in the 1984 version, a former ambulance orderly home from American involvement in WW1 (in the 1946 film, he is a former WW1 American pilot).
The 1984 film leaves out, entirely, the 1946 version’s final parts set on the Cote d’Azur, and resets those scenes in Paris.
The Himalayan scenes, where Larry Darrell seeks and finds enlightenment after consulting with an Indian holy man and “abbot” of an ashram, were much more powerful in the 1946 version; the 1984 film makes the ashram a Tibetan Buddhist monastery, and the scene in which Larry Darrell is enlightened on a mountain is just not at all convincing.
I have never read the novel, but I see now from Wikipedia that Darrell’s enlightenment in the book came after encounter with a Hindu spiritual master. The 1946 film leaves it vague as to the religion of the “abbot”, but the “abbey” is described as an ashram.
Even the drink which causes the character, Sophie, to fall back into alcohol abuse, is changed from Pertsovka (pepper-and-honey vodka, called —in the French way— “persovka”, in the film) to Zubrovka (bison-grass vodka). I can only assume that that that is because Zubrovka had become well-known, whereas few people in the USA had or have heard of Pertsovka.
Personally, I would give the 1946 version 8/10 as a film, but the 1984 version 2/10.
Incidentally, the 1984 film was both a critical and commercial flop, making back only half of its production budget, whereas the original 1946 version was nominated for four Academy Awards, and won one (Anne Baxter, playing Sophie); it also won two Golden Globes. The 1946 film was not a huge success commercially, but still made back 4-5 times its production cost.
Sometimes, remakes surpass earlier versions, but rarely. In this case, the 1946 version outdoes the 1984 remake in every way: storyline, acting, music, cinematography (despite the 38-year gap). The script in particular is very crisp in the 1946 film.

I used to eat there occasionally in the 1980s, along with two now-deceased people: Ig Avsey, lecturer in Russian and noted translator of Dostoyevsky, and Guy Churchill, retired academic and one-time SAS soldier (mainly in Malaya in the 1950s).

I noticed that a Twitter lynch-mob has been attacking dissident broadcaster Neil Oliver over the past day or two after he had a dialogue with a doctor who disagreed with him on one or two issues. The Twitter mob have been trashing Oliver not only about the medical questions which were the subject of the show (on, apparently, GB News) but also Oliver’s whole past history, his TV shows on archaeology, his views in general, the way he looks, speaks etc.
Many of the Twitter mob claimed (and at time of writing, are still claiming) that the doctor in question completely defeated Oliver. Also, that Oliver (and MP Andrew Bridgen) had no right to speak because said doctor is a doctor, and so of course (?) knew more than they do.
Well, is that last so? I did not watch the discussion (in fact I have never seen GB News and am unsure whether my TV can even receive its broadcasts) but the said doctor is, as I understand it, an ordinary GP, not a specialist in vaccines or, indeed, viruses.
What interests me is how there is this superficially huge number of persons on Twitter (though probably not even a tenth of 1% of the general population) who are willing to join in with others of their sort to create a Twitterstorm which, in terms of real effects in the real world, makes not a ripple in society or the body politic.
The sheer hatred of their vituperative tweets is incredible. There is no “after this conflict“. Either Russia effectively “wins” the conflict (whether by negotiation or in the field), or the whole thing turns into a general Eastern European and Central European war between Russia and NATO, which might or might not go nuclear.
Whatever or whichever, there will be few more UK troops in Ukraine. In any case, the British Army is almost non-existent now in terms of major field presence. Take away the office bods, clerks, rear-echelon elements, and the whole brass-hat staff officer element (etc, meaning all non-combatant units), and I doubt that the UK could field, overseas, more than about 20,000 active troops, at most.

Watched about 10 mins of the new TV spy drama, A Spy Among Friends. Had I known that it was about Philby, I should probably not have bothered. I do not have a lot of time for the so-called “master spy” whose reputation was and still is the most inflated since Mata Hari. No need to go into all that now, though.
I am rather impatient with films and TV dramas. If they bore or irritate me in the first 10-15 mins, I rarely watch on. In this case, there were invented scenes, which may have been inevitable, but some of them lacked any credibility. For example, there was a West Indian involved in the first few minutes, highly unlikely in 1963. Also, the show pushed, in those opening minutes, the buttons of all the known cliches about Philby— cricket, booze, womanizing etc.
It is true that Philby, had he become Chief of SIS, would have been a “master spy” or “legendary agent” (“legendary” in more ways than one). Not because (or primarily because) he would have been able to give the KGB secrets at all levels, but mainly because he would have been in a position to cripple SIS strategically, structurally; even more important, he would also have been in a position to deliberately mis-advise the Prime Minister and other ministers, and to point them in the wrong direction strategically.

In fact, I met said barrister when we attended a dinner party (not my favourite activity) in Blackheath in, I think, 1987 or thereabouts, at which that barrister was also a guest. I was a belated Bar School student at the time (though about 31). The barrister in question must have been 40-something, but in my opinion looked 50+.
The hostess was a charming blonde lady of Polish origins (but I think born in the UK), whose familiar name I forget and was something like Dushka (but not that). Her husband was a friendly chap who seemed amused by that barrister’s seemingly dog-like devotion to the hostess.
If truth be known, the barrister in question struck me as a bit of a nitwit, and I was told that the hostess later said to my girlfriend that I had given more of an impression of being a senior barrister than the said real senior barrister, despite my being ten years younger and a mere Bar student.
Well, perhaps my view was wrong, or at least superficial, because I believe that I read that the barrister in question was then or not long afterwards a silk (QC, now of course KC) and later became a commercial arbitrator and judge (I think in Hong Kong), as well as a trustee of one or two well-known institutions. So maybe he was not a nitwit, at least not entirely. Or maybe our social system rewards people from privileged backgrounds who make the right noises. Take your choice.

We need to get serious about crime. This is a joke.
You only have to look at the newspapers to see that that is so. The national ones do not carry the whole story. You see the picture better in the local newspapers (whether print or online). Even quite violent criminals with long and bad records are getting, quite often, suspended sentences, or even such leniency as conditional discharges.
As for thefts, unless the value involved is prodigious, a non-custodial sentence is the norm. Indeed, even where the record is very long and there are aggravating factors, e.g. having committed a “minor” theft (which can still be into the hundreds of pounds) during the currency of a suspended sentence, the time given is usually something like 1 or 2 months, meaning that the convict will be released in, quite likely, a couple of weeks (half of the headline sentence, minus any time spent in custody, but also administrative early release in many cases).
How long is a “long” record? In many cases, not even dozens but even hundreds of convictions, if relatively minor. For example, a shoplifting offence where the value is less than £200 carries a maximum sentence of 6 months in prison, in theory, but a more typical result is a penalty notice and fine of £80 rather than a trial, if the matter is admitted.
In fact, most smallish thefts of that sort never get to court, or even to the police (who now usually only attend stores if there has been a struggle of some sort). It is often left to the store staff to sort out (eg by expelling and banning the perpetrator). That’s when the perpetrator is caught at all.
If you look at local newspapers, you often see that, before a minor offender such as a shoplifter is imprisoned, the defendant will usually have been caught and convicted dozens and perhaps caught (and/or seen) by shop staff hundreds of times, and even then the sentence of imprisonment might be measured in weeks, maybe 10 weeks or similar, meaning out in about a month.
Not that I am a “hanger and flogger”, far from it, but it has become a bit of a joke.
The same is even true of offences involving violence, not uncommonly.
I noticed in the newspapers recently a trial of a gang involved in a series of high-value ATM ram-raids across the South of England. The amount taken was in the hundreds of thousands of pounds, and the damage done to shops and stolen cars (Range-Rovers etc) was even greater. Four or five were convicted at Crown Court. The leader got, I think, over 6 years, but will be released in 3 years; another pair got 3 years (so out in 18 months), and one got a non-custodial sentence.
Of course, say something online about, say, the Jewish lobby, and the police and CPS take much more interest (as the country folds…).
At the same time as the above-discussed cases, Sven Longshanks (James Allchurch) got 2.5 years (so will spend over a year in prison) for being rude about Jews etc on his Internet podcasts! The whole system is now mad. There was another recent case where someone got something like 6 years or more for supposedly having belonged to a banned organization, and also for having a copy (either in print or downloaded from the Internet) of the 1970s manual, The Anarchist’s Cookbook, which is now prohibited in the UK. Just mad.

I do not think that I had heard of her before today.

So far from having been “grossly unfair“, as Ms. Proudman opines (having apparently read only a brief and one-sided scribble on the Legal Business online platform), the decision of the Solicitors’ Regulation Authority [SRA] regarding Lewis was impeccably fair and, in punishing Lewis very leniently, bent over backwards to be fair. Even his small fine was reduced from £7,500 to £2,500 because his Counsel said on his behalf that Lewis (the ludicrously so-called “top lawyer“, if you believe the tabloid Press) owned no real property, and in fact owned nothing at time of the hearing in 2018 but his clothes, a private pension worth £70 a week, and a mobility scooter.
After the SRA hearing, Lewis took off for Israel, where he now lives.
Looking at what Lewis wrote online to various people, including a Jewish teenager, I was surprised that Lewis was not struck off the roll of solicitors.
I wonder whether Ms. Proudman thinks that the decision of the Bar Disciplinary Tribunal in my case was “grossly unfair“? Until today, I was unaware that Maugham no longer practises as a barrister in chambers (he specialized in tax law). Apparently, he left his last chambers in 2020.
I have seen tweets saying that Maugham is a “grifter”, living off donations to the Good Law Project. I have no idea whether that be so, and I also note that the GLP is supported by not only individual donations but also large grants from several well-known trust funds, not least that of the rather odd Rausing people (the descendants of the man who invented Tetrapak in Sweden); they also give or have given money to the mainly Jewish “Hope not Hate” crowd.
How much Maugham pays himself (in effect) as Director of the GLP I have no idea (and the website of the GLP is silent on the subject).
Jolyon lives in a construct of fantasy and demands that the rest of us exchange reality for that fantasy so it only makes sense that Jolyon see this loss within the prism of fantasy as well as a win.
I remember seeing Maugham on a “celebrity” episode of University Challenge. He stood out from the rest as combining a very-obviously huge opinion of himself with equally-huge ignorance of almost everything. Very funny.

The Jew Zelensky knows that his time is limited in terms of bringing NATO directly into war with Russia. The Western populations are tiring of “Ukraine” as a trendy cause, and Western governments are tiring of sending almost endless amounts of money, arms, and ammunition to the Kiev regime, especially now that the much-trumpeted counter-offensive has almost if not actually stalled.
Zelensky and his corrupt and brutal cabal have only one real chance— to bring NATO into the war directly on the “Ukrainian” (Kiev regime) side. That therefore is their aim. Method? Perhaps to attack the Zaporozhye nuclear plant, blame that on Russia, and hope that NATO then either declares war on Russia (unlikely) or starts to fight without declaration of war (more likely).

I have blogged for the past year or more that the best idea is for Russia to take the areas of Ukraine east of the Dnieper, and for some Ukrainian successor to the Zelensky regime to control the larger area west of the Dnieper, and centred on Lvov. That would leave aside the Kiev area (which is on both sides of the Dnieper), Crimea, and the Black Sea littoral centred on Odessa.
Crimea was always Russian, with a mainly (now almost entirely) Russian population. Kiev should probably have some kind of special status, and Odessa either the same or a degree of autonomy, with Russia controlling the Black Sea coast to a depth of about 50-100 miles.
“Boris” Johnson and the Lebedev family
Saw a recording of a documentary (I think Channel 4) about “Boris”-idiot and the Lebedev father and son (with the old KGB, its successor-agencies, and British SIS and MI5, as spear-carriers).
The whole thing is rather odd, and there are certainly questions to be answered, but I cannot see Johnson as a Russian agent, not as such. For one thing, he is at root completely unideological; any such connection would be money-based or based upon getting help to push “Boris” upward (he was Foreign Secretary at the time he visited one of the Italian castles owned by the Lebedevs).
At the time, as now, the Lebedevs controlled msm outlets such as the Independent and Evening Standard.
My tentative conclusion at the end was that, possibly/probably what happened was that the younger Lebedev was offered a peerage for straight cash to “Boris”, paid somewhere offshore, protected by layers of (perhaps) offshore trusts and companies, such as Panamanian trusts and/or numbered bank accounts. A personal deal, nothing to do with the old KGB, or its SVR successor, though the details would no doubt be of interest to the latter, and to the Kremlin.
I concede that I have no evidence at all with which to back the above speculation. Pure speculation and hunch, backed only by the facts as known. Why did Johnson later nominate Lebedev junior for a peerage? Against Security Service and other advice, too.
Of course, at the time Johnson visited the Lebedevs in Italy, he was Foreign Secretary, not Prime Minister, so could not have nominated anyone for a peerage, but his unmerited likely elevation to No.10 was a good each-way bet at the time, and anyway no money need to have been paid unless and until.
If it happened, how much money? Name any figure north of £10M. £20M is good, £100M even better.

I once visited Lancing, about 28 years ago, in order to complete a SCUBA course at a dive centre which I believe no longer exists. Pity. It had a proper dive-instruction pool, i.e. not just a swimming pool.
That pool looked just like an ordinary, fairly big, indoor swimming pool, but was very different in that about a quarter of its length was only about 4 feet deep, but the rest of the pool was about 30 feet deep. The depth went straight down from 4 feet to 30 feet.
30 feet might not seem terribly deep (and ordinary recreational divers go down to depths of 70 feet) but when you are 30 feet down, and then the instructor deliberately pulls out your air supply and throws it over your shoulder (to test your ability to recover the regulator and start breathing again without panicking or striking out madly for the surface), it seems a long long way down.
I passed that test (and the course) but I admit that, for a split second, I had wanted to get to the surface no matter what. You have to overcome your own unreasoning fear, and overcome it in an instant.
Lancing, what little I saw of it from and to the little railway station (the course lasted two days, and I stayed at a B&B by the beach, close to the dive centre) seemed pretty quiet. As I say, though, that was about 28 years ago.

Jenrick had an oddly-stellar if very brief career before he became an MP. Wikipedia says nothing about his parentage or family. It is fairly clear, though, that he must come from a background of considerable wealth.
After having qualified aged 26 as solicitor, in 2008, Jenrick worked for about 4 years in London and Moscow for two of the most prestigious American law firms: Skadden Arps, and Sullivan & Cromwell. He was then appointed a director of the Christie’s auction house. Quite something at the age of only ~30/31.
Jenrick, elected as MP in 2014, was already appointed PPS (to Esther McVey) in early 2015, only just over a year after becoming an MP. PPS to several other ministers followed, and then he became Exchequer Secretary to the Treasury in 2018 (aged 36) and was appointed a Cabinet minister the following year, aged only 37.
Despite that superficially stellar start to his career(s), I have never seen anything very intelligent said or done by Jenrick, and he is a total puppet of the Jewish lobby:

People over 60 are the Conservative Party mainstay, both in membership and electorate. Lose that bloc, and there will be no Conservative Party to speak of. Speaking personally, though I myself am (since last year) of State-pensionable age, I am less affected either way, partly because I only get about half of the State Pension maximum (by reason of having spent many years overseas).

Paddington
I was just indulging my Google Earth streetview addiction (again). This time the Praed Street/Eastbourne Terrace/Bishop’s Bridge Road area of Paddington.
Had I just teleported to Praed Street, I should scarcely have recognized it after even 16 years (the last time I saw it, when I appeared at Central London County Court near Regent’s Park, and stayed at what was then the Edgware Road Hilton at the junction of Edgware Road and Praed Street).
When I lived in Little Venice, very intermittently, from 1976 through to about mid-1990s, Praed Street, especially between St. Mary’s Hospital and Edgware Road, was a rather neglected area. Now it bustles. New buildings, new shops.
The area to the west, by Paddington Station, also very different. The old Great Western Hotel, dusty and neglected, is now another Hilton. A few shops and cafes that I recognized, in the side streets.
Eastbourne Terrace now totally different, with some buildings gutted and awaiting rebuilding, others completely new. The one that used to house John Brown Engineering, which Gorbachev visited in, I think, late 1984, is now gone, as far as I can see. Other buildings are new.
I noticed all the new buildings around Bishop’s Bridge Road, though the one that used to house Red Star Parcels (the parcel arm of the old British Rail) is still there, though evidently refurbished. I used to know a very eccentric person who worked there, one Gaster, who had been sacked from his job at the Foreign Office in 1939 or 1940 and then interned on the Isle of Man as a dissident (for being against the war with the German Reich).
Gaster (I think possibly part-German, another possible reason for his WW2 internment) always reminded me of one of those bureaucrats or politicos in the Soviet sphere of influence, reduced to the ranks and made to work as a forester or parcel operative (as it might be). Wonder what happened to him? Long gone, I should think. ~44 years ago, and he must have been 60 or more then.
I see that the roundabout under the Westway, near to Little Venice, is still recognizable, though, and the lay-by (featured near the end of Withnail and I), is still there.
Idle thoughts…
I remember walking down Edgware Road about 40 years ago with a lady whose office was near Paddington Station. She suddenly let out an expletive, followed by “I’ve lost an ear-ring“. Said ear-ring was an emerald, and set in gold. I think quite old. I suggested that we retrace our steps, though not holding out much hope. We did walk back, eyes on pavements and roadway. We had nearly reached the Circle and District Line station opposite the rail terminal when she suddenly pounced like a bird on something in the gutter. Her emerald ear-ring.
In fact, perseverance like that does, sometimes, pay off. I recall one time when I was with my younger brother at Newbury Races. About 1973. I was maybe 17, he was perhaps 15. Things must have been slacker, or less nanny-state, then; I do not think that anyone ever stopped us from backing a horse.
Anyway, the race was run. My horse lost, and my brother’s also lost, but less badly, having come in second. Still, that was no good, and he threw down his bookmaker’s ticket, a colourful oblong card about five inches by two. We walked away to go back to the stands or paddock. Then there was an announcement— “Stewards’ Inquiry“… Five or ten minutes later, the winning horse had been disqualified, and my brother’s placed 1st. He had won, but had no ticket to prove it. He spent half an hour or more wandering amid thousands of discarded tickets, like a wading bird. Incredibly, he found his ticket amid that multitude, and collected his winnings.
Surely most thinking people can see that the Ukrainian situation is not normal, not even a “normal” war? The transnational NWO/ZOG system is funnelling cash, as well as arms, ammunition etc to “Ukraine” (the Jew-Zionist Zelensky regime in Kiev). Why? There is a whole agenda behind this.
