It does occur to me that, with the increasing pressure in the UK on animals, birds, fish, and insects, so many of which are now vulnerable or endangered, one possible answer might be to establish completely rewilded zones, perhaps 5 of them in England, and a smaller number but similar proportion in Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland.
I have not fully thought-out the idea, so these are just stray ideas at present.
Such rewilded zones would go beyond the various existing zone-regimes such as Green Belt, National Park, Site of Special Scientific Interest etc.
The idea would be for such zones to be changed from whatever land use presently exists to a completely wild forest. New building would be banned, and existing housing gradually reduced. There would be no industry and no large-scale agriculture or horticulture.
The above requirements suggest that areas already sparsely-inhabited would be chosen.
As for the size of such rewilded zones, I am thinking in terms of about the same size of circumference as the M25, i.e. the Greater London area. About 5 of those in England, perhaps 2 in Scotland, 1 in Wales and 1 in Northern Ireland.
Traffic would be very restricted over time, roads not open to the public (eventually). The zones to be linked with each other and other countryside areas by the kind of wildlife grid I have proposed over recent years.

I am old enough to remember those little shops. One in particular, in Caversham Heights, near Reading, early 1960s. The sweets were dispensed by the owner, I think an otherwise-retired old fellow, who sold them in small white-paper bags. A wide range, but I either bought small boiled sweets (very small balls of hard candy), or a kind of chewing gum that came with collectable cards depicting (and explaining) battles of the American Civil War of the 1860s. I wanted the cards, not the gum.
Very gory, those cards (as I discovered only when I belatedly read law, 20 years later) were the subject of a legal case (as to whether they counted as “obscene” because of their bloodsoaked content), which case went as high as the House of Lords (House of Lords Judicial Committee, the forerunner of the present UK Supreme Court). That was around 1965, only a couple of years after I used to buy the cards.
I remember that all my friends (who also bought the cards) favoured the Confederate side, but I (alone, I think) favoured the Union. Not sure now, over 60 years later, whether that was because the Union side was more efficient, or more advanced in weaponry, or just because I wanted to go contrary to the views of the mob.
The sweetshop in question was actually made out of the front part of an ordinary late-19thC house, which (I see from Google maps and streetview) has now reverted to being just a house again.
I also remember the little sweetshop because, aged about 7, I sheltered in that tiny shop after I (God knows why, now, but it would have been in self-defence) hit another boy, and then was sought out by the much older, and rather fearsome, brother of the same. In the end, the older boy caught me outside but, after I explained that I had hit his brother in self-defence, he was very reasonable, and let me off. Maybe I had dormant barristerial skills even then (or at least the ability to get out of scrapes)…

That was, of course, a very wrong thing to have done. It certainly deserved punishment, and quite likely a prison term, but the length of the term imposed is what struck me— 3 years!
Admittedly, as things are, that means that the convicted defendant will serve “only” about 13-14 months, but surely, in all the circumstances, a 20-month term or even a 10-month term would have been sufficient (meaning that the defendant would serve 8 or 4 months). Still unpleasant for her, and still sending a message to others etc.
There is routine over-sentencing in this country, but that is, I concede, combined with under-sentencing for many others, e.g. some people who attack others violently, yet get suspended sentences.

I strongly support that. I was quite shocked to hear, in 1989, in Warsaw, and from the lips of a Polish girl I knew slightly, that my old haunt, Raoul’s (cafe) in Little Venice (London), where she had worked (she used to serve me my coffees) would take a high percentage of the tips given to the wait staff. That money would, so I was told, go to the woman who owned the cafe. Disgraceful.
Incidentally, the manager of the cafe at that time was a very pleasant young-ish Lebanese, who referred to the Jews who were a fairly large proportion of the clientele as “the Chosen“. Sardonic.
Apropos of nothing much, that Lebanese seemed to regard me as omniscient when it came to knowing who —using the cafe— was who. The manager asked me to go into the cafe —I was seated outside— and pretend to order something so that I could take a look.

I had seen Boateng previously, not only on TV but also in person, when he was at Harrow Crown Court as Counsel in 1992 or 1993. “A GP worried about his inheritance disguised himself as a nurse and injected deadly poison into his victim, who thought he was getting a home-visit Covid booster, a court has heard.
Thomas Kwan was not injecting Covid vaccine into Patrick O’Hara, prosecutors allege, but a poison that gave O’Hara a rare and life-threatening flesh-eating disease.
“Sometimes, occasionally perhaps, the truth really is stranger than fiction,” said Peter Makepeace KC as he opened the prosecution case against Kwan at Newcastle crown court on Thursday.
Kwan, 53, is accused of attempting to murder O’Hara, his mother’s long-term partner and a “potential impediment” to him inheriting her estate.
The court heard Kwan devised an intricate plan to kill 71-year-old O’Hara, who lived in Newcastle with Kwan’s mother, by disguising himself as a community nurse and injecting him with poison.
Makepeace said the plan involved Kwan forging NHS documentation, disguising himself, using false number plates, and booking in to a hotel using a false name.
Police recovered a photograph from Kwan’s computer of him in disguise with a wig, beard and moustache.
“It was an audacious plan,” Makepeace told the jury. “It was a plan to murder a man in plain sight, to murder a man right in front of his own mother’s eyes, that man’s life partner.”

Were I an Iranian strategist, I should probably concentrate my missiles on, firstly, the Israeli nuclear weapons facility at Dimona [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shimon_Peres_Negev_Nuclear_Research_Center], secondly at any known nuclear weapons storage facilities, thirdly at known IDF air bases and the civilian international airport, and only then at concentrations of population, and even then mostly on Tel Aviv itself.
Apart from anything else, this Iranian attack will collapse a good deal of the Israeli economy, especially if the main international airport is put out of action.
I have no idea what proportion of Israel’s economy relies on tourism, but I imagine that it is fairly high. Who will be visiting now?
