Talking point

I might have a problem accepting the exact parallel, but it is worth thinking about.

Saturday quiz

Well, this week another victory over political journalist John Rentoul, who scored 3/10. My score was 7/10. I did not know the answers to questions 2, 3, and 6 (and I admit that my correct answer to question 8 was a semi-guess or educated guess).

Israel is doomed.

I have met relatively few, not so many, Ukrainians. I have met many Russians, of all sorts. I have to say that I much prefer the Russians I have met to the Ukrainians I have met.

Subjective, yes of course. Anecdotal too, were details to be considered. However, consider the cultural riches of Russia: composers, writers, painters, philosophers and other thinkers. Now consider the Ukrainian equivalent. Frankly, there is no comparison.

This is the sort of thing that happens when free speech is attacked via not only misguided or deliberately-totalitarian anti-free speech laws but also via policy determinations that have no basis in law whatever, as with “non-crime hate incidents”. “Hate crime” itself has no real basis in law; even less so has “non-crime hate” etc.

This is akin to, parallel to, what happened during the 2020-2022 “Covid” hysteria— government wishes, or preferences, labelled as “official guidance”, and all of that farrago confused with actual law, and then “enforced” arbitrarily by police woodentops who often had, and have, no idea either as to what is and what is not law, and who also often have an inflated idea of their own powers under law.

Talking about “Covid” and thinking back to the facemask loonies seen everywhere 2-3 years ago (though not so often now the msm propaganda hysteria has died down), I saw a typical one today in a supermarket: a middle-aged woman, very fat, hauling herself along slowly, while wearing her filthy, probably 3-years-old, cloth facemask, and pushing a large shopping trolley full of high-carb, high-fat foodstuffs.

Incidentally…

Much of what Goodwin says is correct. What weakens Goodwin, weakens Farage, weakens Reform UK, is that they are totally in the pocket of the Jew-Zionist-Israel lobby. Same goes for Toby Young, Allison Pearson, the “Free Speech Union” etc.

Moscow travelogue

Very different from when I was not far from there several times in 1993 (in Leninsky Prospekt, at the Academy of Sciences). On my second and shorter trip to Moscow, in 2007, I was in another area of the city.

Whatever may be said about Putin, he has made Moscow a very much better city than it was either in 2007 or (a fortiori) 1993, when it was, palpably, on the edge of chaos.

Sovietism had to fall, after the years of gradual decline and the uselessness of Gorbachev. It fell into near-chaos, it was ravaged and pillaged by finance-capitalist carpetbaggers (mostly Jews) from the West, and also by (mostly Jewish) homegrown predators, the so-called “oligarchs”. Gangsterism too.

Putin put an end to much of that, certainly to the outright gangsterism (in 1993, in the Yeltsin era, I was staying in the same hotel, the Ukraina, as the top-level Chechen gangsters), but there are still huge social inequalities (and, worse yet, inequities) in Russia.

I feel that Russia is still in one of its states of transition. The situation will become clearer later.

I am not a “hanger and flogger”, usually, far from it, but the sentences handed down for quite bad crimes of violence are often risibly lenient. The public are rightly concerned.

Well, Corbyn proves, once again, that he is a bit of a political joke.

At present, Reform UK is between 28% and 34% in the opinion polls, which might result in anything between 200 and 400 MPs at a general election. Corbyn’s (I think as yet unnamed) “real Labour” party has not been much tested in opinion polls but seems to be somewhere between 5% and 10%.

That might result in anything from a couple of MPs (inc. Corbyn himself) and (at peak) half a dozen or so MPs. The likelihood is that Corbyn’s new party will take a small amount of support from Reform, far more from official Labour, and so give Reform maybe (?) a dozen more MPs.

The new and totalitarian Online Harms Act is already resulting in footage of protests being censored. LibLabCon MPs supported its passage.

American version, but applicable more to the UK.

Ha ha. “What goes around comes around”

Jew-Zionist troublemakers have been trying to censor British people for decades. They have been pressuring commercial venues to cancel shows by “antisemitic” and/or anti-Israel speakers, comedians, singers etc for at least half a century in the UK. People such as David Icke, such as the Jewish anti-Zionist jazz musician Gilad Atzmon, and hundreds if not thousands of others.

“Slitherman” and his “Campaign Against Antisemitism” co-conspirators are prominent in that sort of activity, and have been for at least 11 years.

As a matter of fact, the “CAA” was behind the “cancelling” of satirical singer-songwriter Alison Chabloz at the Edinburgh Fringe several years ago, and dishonest/negligent Jew-Zionist solicitor Mark Lewis, and his loudmouthed wife/carer, Mandy Blumenthal (aided and abetted by lying Daily Mail scribbler Sabrina Miller), were behind the attempted shutdown of black comedian Reginald D. Hunter last year (2024), also at the Edinburgh Fringe:

Now, the “CAA” pro-Israel propaganda outfit (engaged in “lawfare”— abuse of English law for pro-Jew-Zionist/Israel purposes) has taken the matter further, actually having the sheer gall to privately prosecute that black comedian on a criminal charge.

They’re Coming to Take Me Away, Ha Ha!

One of the most popular blog posts, published just over 6 years ago.

The links between many Jewish/Zionist individuals, pro-Israel-ism, “antifa” cretins, and mental instability, are very clear.

Very true. I also note that there is a strong Jewish involvement in most of the significant regional flashpoints: USA/NATO/EU-Russia, Ukraine (Kiev regime)-Russia, Israel-Gaza, Israel-Syria, Israel-Yemen.

[“Genocidal Zionists are incandescent with fury at the continued solidarity with Palestine shown by international lawyer and UN Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese. The latest tactic is to have the Donald Trump administration announce sanctions against her. “Albanese’s campaign of political and economic warfare against the United States and Israel will no longer be tolerated,” the Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, posted on X. “We will always stand by our partners in their right to self-defense.” Rubio is one of the most pro-Zionist people ever to be appointed to the post of US Secretary of State and has received over a million dollars from Zionist lobby groups, “making him one of the top recipients of pro-Israeli donations”. The sanctions announcement coincided with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s visit to Washington, DC. Rubio and Netanyahu met on the same day that the sanctions were announced, which must suggest very close coordination. My latest: UN Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese faces US sanctions and smear campaigns by Zionist groups after exposing tech billionaires’ complicity in Israeli genocide in Gaza. https://presstv.ir/Detail/2025/07/26/751884/francesca-albanese-smeared-exposing-tech-billionaires-complicit-gaza-genocide“]

Marco Rubio— just another corrupt Cuban.

I am sure that the USA would not like the Russians doing similar but in, say, Northern Mexico. A provocation.

Yes, get all of our armed services doing something actually beneficial for this country, instead of backing up American policy idiocy and/or supporting the Israeli Jews.

That ghastly little “Conservative” (?) scribbler and talking head, Harwood, really deserves some bad luck to come his way. Pro-Israel, pro-globalist finance-capitalism, in favour of cuts to public services and social security, in favour of unrestricted housing development. A System puppet, retailing “controlled opposition” rubbish.

[“48% of Britons say that immigration is one of the top issues facing the country, the joint-highest level since the election Economy: 52% (-2 from 26-28 Apr) Immigration: 48% (+4) Health: 36% (-1) Crime: 22% (-1) Defence: 20% (-2) Housing: 20% (=) Environment: 15% (-2) Tax: 14% (-1) Europe: 13% (+2) Welfare: 13% (+2).”]

Maybe the British people are at last beginning to wake up.

Defend? Against what? There is a concerted attempt to push for war with Russia, which would be both mad and pointless, Russia having no interest at all in invading central or western parts of Europe.

Ukraine was always part of Russia; as for the Baltic States or pribaltika, while I respect their rights to self-determination and their own cultures, that respect would not outweigh the right of the UK, France, and Germany etc not to get into a nuclear conflict with Russia over that small part of Northern Europe. In fact, the only reason Russia is now overshadowing the three Baltic states is because they have joined NATO. The same is true of Finland.

Present-day Russia is not like the old Soviet Union. It does not have the expansionist drive that came out of Marxist-Leninist ideology. It is also far less efficient in terms of military power (and secret intelligence etc).

European culture and civilization is threatened not by that fantasy “Russian invasion” but by migration-invasion from backward parts of the world, and I see very few and very weak attempts being made even to slow it, let alone stop it.

“Boris” Johnson— part-Jew and pro-Israel, pro-Jewish lobby, and a Conservative Friends of Israel member; Starmer-stein likewise— pro-Israel, pro-Jewish lobby, not himself Jewish (as far as is known) but with a Jewish wife, and with children being brought up as if fully-Jewish, Starmer being a member of Labour Friends of Israel.

Join the dots. Both Starmer-stein and “Boris” Johnson were fanatically in favour of the police-state measures brought in under cover of the “Covid” scamdemic/panicdemic, both funneled British taxpayers’ monies to “Ukraine” (the mainly Jewish regime in Kiev), and both encouraged and still encourage mass immigration into Britain, while having English/British dissidents and protesters arrested. Both also want to allow (((developers))) to build on what is left of the “green and pleasant land”.

As I say, just join the dots.

Once again, we see where that Harwood bastard is coming from. For him, British politics and society is all about the (((money))). Same goes for GB News generally (and, even worse, the “no-one watches” Talk TV).

Interesting that Harwood and GB News, supposedly small-c “conservative”, now start to defend Starmer-stein, i.e. now that his fake Labour (((government))) is collapsing amid public hatred of it and him.

Tweeter “@benonwine” should consider what percentage of the UK population is now non-European (non-white). About 20%. Not all of that bloc vote, and not all of that bloc who vote, vote Labour, but most do. Question more or less answered.

As to Goodwin’s tweet and YouGov’s polling, according to Electoral Calculus [https://www.electoralcalculus.co.uk/userpoll.html], those numbers would be enough to give Reform about 345 MPs, and a goodly-sized Commons majority (19, but in practical terms about 30 or 40. Other significant parties: 143 Labour MPs, 71 LibDems, SNP 38, Cons 23.

On that basis, the once-great Conservative Party would be reduced to a very small rump of 23 MPs, and would be a very poor fifth party in the Commons, after Reform, Labour, LibDems, and the SNP. It would be the end of the Conservative Party, bar the shouting about the whys and wherefores.

Sending Kemi Badenoch back to Nigeria at once, or at least sacking her (asap), might save some of the present Con Party MPs, but not most, I think. The tipping point may already have been reached. Every time I see the woman on TV, I think, “can anyone really see that as a Prime Minister?“.

Not so sure about that last comment from “@elias_baa”…

Surprising, yet not so surprising. Labour has done rather little for the people of Scotland in the past several decades. The SNP is only supported by, at most, half of the electorate. Reform may be the banner to which anti-SNP voters will flock.

I think I had not previously heard of that one. Rosie Wrighting. 27 years old. Sounds like a total bimbo. Selected/elected as MP aged 26. Had a job with ASOS for what seems to have been months not years. Never done anything else. Studied (Mickey Mouse “degree”?) fashion, we are told…

Looking at the 2024 result at Kettering [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kettering_(UK_Parliament_constituency)#Elections_in_the_2020s], I think that Ms. Wrighting will fairly soon be looking for another job.

Slava!

The sad thing is that, at some point, it might even seem that something as devastating as a nuclear attack on our major cities might not be, ultimately, as entirely negative as we usually think (taking the argument to absurdity, admittedly).

Britain took a very wrong path after about 1975 or so.

A very English political “streetfight”.

I have been lamenting that for almost half a century, and still the stupidity of it grows.

Exactly. The self-describing “Left”, mostly unthinking individuals, tend to believe that they are somehow “against the System”, while gagging to be controlled and ordered by that very matrix. Look at how they all complied, to the letter, with the “Covid” police state “measures”— the facemask nonsense, the movement restrictions, even the ludicrous “Rule of Six” thought up by “Boris”-idiot (though tweeter “ihearthockey29” seems to be American).

Same in the UK.

It has been a long time since I was in the Kremlin (I paid my rouble or two); 1993. On my last visit to Moscow, in 2007, I was too busy talking with boring people to sightsee, though I did walk up to GUM, off Red Square, but GUM, like much of Moscow, had changed out of all recognition.

There has always been a big difference between Moscow and the provinces. Indeed, I was told in the 1980s that if you went even 5 or 10 miles outside Leningrad, as it then was, you could find villages where the houses, or some of the houses, were without running water. They all had electricity, though. After all, Lenin himself had defined socialism as “Soviet power plus the electrification of the whole country“.

As to who or what groups are affected by Western sanctions against Russia, I would think (I concede that I have not studied it, and I now have no contacts in Russia) that the effect of the sanctions has been to deprive the most wealthy Russians of opportunities to enjoy themselves in Western capitals and large cities, and resorts. The Russian post-Soviet middle class may have been affected in terms of holidays and career opportunities. I have always been sceptical as to whether the vast mass of Russians is affected at all. They buy domestic food, which is plentiful, domestic vodka and beer (and wine, including Crimean), and do not travel overseas anyway.

I cannot quarrel with that.

More from the newspapers

https://www.theguardian.com/society/2023/apr/06/benefit-sanctions-slow-peoples-progress-into-work-says-report-therese-coffey-suppressed

Benefit sanctions slow down claimants’ progress into work and are likely to force them into taking lower-paying jobs that leave them hundreds of pounds a year worse off, according to an internal report that the government tried to suppress.

The findings of the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) report echo a series of independent studies showing sanctions – in effect fines amounting to hundreds of pounds imposed on claimants for supposed infringements of benefit rules – are ineffective as a way of getting people into jobs or to work more hours.

The report is embarrassing for the government, which has aggressively promoted sanctions as part of its plans to force claimants to take a job or work more hours. Completed in August 2020, its release was blocked by the then work and pensions secretary, Thérèse Coffey, on the grounds it was “not in the public interest”.

Experts said it was shocking that the government had clear evidence of the negative effects of sanctions for more than two years and had actively sought to keep the findings under wraps while overseeing a huge rise in the numbers of sanctions on universal credit claimants.

My assessment of Therese Coffey from 2019: https://ianrobertmillard.org/2019/09/16/deadhead-mps-an-occasional-series-the-therese-coffey-story/.

It seems clear to me that the State benefit sanctions regime has nothing to do with incentivizing the unemployed, but is basically political, a way of chucking some red meat to the pleb-Cons, the Mail and Sun readers, whether retired or working for small pay. A contemporary equivalent of the Roman games, with all thumbs pointing down.

Having said that, merely one of thousands of British or American bombing raids over Germany in the 1941-1945 period would have caused a hundred or a thousand times the amount of hurt, death, and damage. The same would be true of more recent bombings, in Iraq etc.

Trump situation

Readers of this blog will be aware that I am no admirer of Trump, who when President was basically a squawking parrot guarded by a troop of Jews.

Likewise, I despise the fact that, when in his last weeks in office, Trump sat back and did nothing about the fact that thousands of social-national Americans are in Federal prisons. They could all have been pardoned by Trump. They were just left to rot.

As to Trump’s present situation, and speaking, of course, hypothetically, were I in his position I would rally my supporters with a call to arms. Then follow through. I doubt whether Trump will do anything like that, though. He is all hot air.

It is clear that the American political system is at least as broken as that of the UK, and that sinister forces have taken over the academic/educational sector, as well as the msm. Why play by the rules any more? Face reality. There is a need for a second American revolution, on several levels.

Moneygrubbing hypocrites deserve a good kicking.

Technically, Concorde was a great achievement, but I always had a problem with it ideologically: the mass of taxpayers taxed so that a tiny number of very wealthy persons could cross the Atlantic in a few hours. Concorde was subsidized twice over— in its research and development costs, and in its operational costs (losses). The mass of the British people could not dream of ever availing themselves of Concorde’s luxury —if cramped— travel.

I notice, though, that the number of utter mugs sending “Jack Monroe” money via Patreon has now again started to decline, having plateaued for a couple of months.

Last year, after Jewish TV cook Nigella Lawson commended the so-called “Bootstrap Cook”, the Patreon mug-donors numbered nearly 900 (each sending the “grifter”/fraudster between £3.50 and £44 a month, incredibly). That declined to below 500 from August-September 2022, but seemed stuck at around 480. It has now declined further to 460, as of today’s date. That’s still between £1,610 and £20,240 per month, though.

Diary Blog, 5 March 2023, including thoughts around the recent incident at a school in West Yorkshire

Morning music

[painting by Russell Flint]

On this day a year ago

From the newspapers

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-11821157/14-year-old-autistic-boys-naive-prank-scuffed-copy-Koran.html.

Last week, a 14-year-old British boy was forced to flee his home and go into hiding, fearing for his life…

It all started when, as a forfeit for losing a video game, the boy was asked by his friends to buy a copy of the Koran and bring it to school, Kettlethorpe High in Wakefield, West Yorkshire....the holy book, once inside school, became accidentally damaged, though only ‘slightly’ and not by the boy’s hands.

Nobody, certainly not the boy, could have foreseen what would happen next. He was suspended along with three other pupils; police began investigating and recorded a ‘hate’ incident; a Labour councillor stoked tensions by falsely claiming on social media that the book was desecrated; and his mother found herself pleading for forgiveness at the local mosque after his life was threatened.

The Mail on Sunday has learned that at the height of the intimidation the family received an arson threat to their home and the boy –described as ‘absolutely petrified’ – was forced to move to a secret location. After initially contacting West Yorkshire Constabulary, his mother later urged officers not to prosecute to avoid further inflaming the situation. Instead the police said they would ‘work with the school moving forward’.

One parent, herself a teacher, said it ‘feels like a medieval witch-hunt’.

The next day the pupils were suspended and, for reasons that are still unclear, the school decided to call the police, an action met with widespread disbelief from parents.

…at the mosque on a Friday, when the boy’s mother – sitting before an all-male crowd – pleaded for forgiveness. Mr Griffiths, the school’s head, also told the audience – repeatedly – of his sorrow.

No one mentioned the death threats, however. Thornton said: ‘There is an element of awareness and education that needs to be embedded within the school and the wider community of Wakefield.’

He continued: ‘We recorded a hate incident. That means we will look to support the school at this moment in time. It is recorded on our system.

It was left, then, to the mother, sitting with her hands grasped together, to talk about the threats.

She did so almost by way of an apology. In fact what followed – filmed and put on social media – turned into an exercise in public humiliation resembling something from Maoist China.

[Mail on Sunday]

Those backward creatures do not respect the English people involved (mother, headmaster, police inspector) for pleading and grovelling—au contraire! They despise them for their weakness.

Jesus H. Christ! No wonder English people are angry at the state of this country. They let in these backward elements from places such as Pakistan, those elements then bred prolifically, embedding themselves in many places, particularly in the north of England. Now, the English, in those areas (and later, everywhere?), are completely subject to the will or diktat of the backward.

Look at how the police bend over backward to appease the mob.

A mixture of fear and both misplaced and fake “tolerance” seems to characterize the behaviour of all the English people involved. A fake tolerance which is a virtue-signal (to the Muslim Pakistanis), saying “look at us— we abase ourselves, because we really respect you and like you and your religion”, when really their pseudo-tolerant behaviour is a fig-leaf covering up fear of the Pakistanis and what violence the Pakistani mob might inflict; if you like, cowardice.

The “multicultural” society is not working. In fact, it cannot work, except where the minorities are few in overall numbers of people. Where the “communities” are large, civil war usually results: Israel/Palestine; Lebanon; Iraq; Syria; Cyprus; Bosnia; Kosovo (etc).

I wonder how long it will be before civil war engulfs “our” so-called “multicultural society”?

This latest incident is another sign that a malign force has been allowed to grow unchecked in the UK. It has to be stopped, and MI5’s pussyfooting, and result-free “investigating”, merely deals (or fails to deal) with a symptom, not with the root cause.

Militant Islamism is not the only serious enemy of our European society in the UK; there are several others. It is, however, the most powerful in terms of control of the streets.

More arrive in the UK every single day, by routes both “legal” (“family reunion”, “fiance/fiancee visas” etc) and illegal (smuggling, rubber-boats in the Channel), and by (the biggest of all invasion routes) births to those already here.

In the end, only reasonable but firm social nationalism can save the UK and the English/British people.

Exactly. Labour wanted more and stricter police-state “lockdowns” (a term formerly used only in prisons and high-security military bases).

The economic struggle of the UK now is mainly a result of the misconceived “lockdown(s)” and other supposedly anti-“Covid” policies applied in 2020 and 2021.

At the height of the pandemic, then-Health Secretary Matt Hancock wanted to announce a new Covid variant to “frighten the pants off everyone”, leaked WhatsApp messages have revealed.

Mr Hancock’s adviser said: “Rather than doing too much forward signalling, we can roll pitch with the new strain.”

“We frighten the pants of everyone with the new strain,” Mr Hancock responded.

The solution was to declare a new strain of coronavirus, the Alpha or Kent variant.

When discussing regional lockdowns, Jamie Njoku-Goodwin, Mr Hancock’s media adviser, suggested it would not be “unhelpful” for the public to think their area could be next.

The Daily Mail and other newspapers should do a report (maybe in a supplement, in view of the amount of material available) about the “holocaust” hoaxes and fakes. Hundreds, maybe thousands.

It should never have been this way. There should have been, more than a year ago, elimination of the Zelensky cabal by covert and/or Spetsnaz units, followed by swift and overwhelming mass parachute landings, particularly in and around Kiev itself, those landings then reinforced and consolidated by a broad advance on and approach to Kiev by massive formations of armour and motorized infantry. As I put it a year ago, “a Blitzkrieg for the sake of mercy“, thus saving the civilian population and their companion animals from being killed, wounded and/or traumatized; also, saving their homes, and general urban infrastructure, from excessive and unnecessary damage.

The Russian Army, GRU, and governmental apparat(s) have been found wanting— hugely so. Inefficient, inept, corrupt, badly-run, you name it. Not that this is new in Russian history. Look at 1914 and 1941.

Ukrainian “refugees”

Seen in the Guardian, a reader’s letter:

I had a checkup with my NHS dentist in May 2022. The next was scheduled for January 2023. This was postponed until April and, last week, I was told this appointment is cancelled. I now have to ring the practice in November 2023 to arrange an appointment for 2024. We currently have a Ukrainian refugee staying with us. She returned to Lviv for Christmas and saw her dentist while there. I am thinking of joining her on her next trip home as it is clearly easier to see a dentist in a war zone than it is here (Rotten, with no quick fixes: the state of our mouths reflects the plight of NHS dentistry, 2 March).

So a Ukrainian “refugee”, staying with someone in Bristol, and who makes pleasant trips back to Lvov? Lvov is in western Ukraine, close to the Polish border, and has been only rarely under any attack. She goes to Lvov for Christmas, and to get dental treatment etc… Why is that person even in the UK? She is evidently not, in any sense, a “refugee”.

The Guardian-reading Bristolian virtue-signaller blithely says that he himself may go to Lvov with the “refugee” “on her next trip home“. Do these people ever wake up?

Either a parody or “Jack Monroe”; it is hard to say.

Journalism was once a trade, then nearly became a profession, but that has ceased to reflect reality as online news outlets use 20-something near-illiterates with meaningless “degrees” in “journalism”.

The one sure way to finish off the Zelensky regime in Kiev is to take and occupy Kiev, or (appalling though that would be from any humanitarian point of view) to flatten it.

The “resistance” to Russian occupation in even the non-Russian parts of the Donbass and the general south of Ukraine has been patchy, though the Kiev-regime special forces have scored a few notable assassinations etc.

What that says to me is that, if the Russian forces can take the whole of Eastern Ukraine (Ukraine east of the Dnieper), the Kiev regime forces will find it hard to recover that territory by any combination of external force and internal “resistance”. External force alone would have to accomplish any such mission.

It may be that that is why Zelensky wants hundreds of tanks, the ideal force for such a mission.

In the east of Ukraine, outside the Donbass, Kharkov is the major city (the largest in Ukraine outside Kiev itself). If Kharkov can be taken and held, the rest of Eastern Ukraine outside the Donbass consists of sparsely-populated countryside with a relatively small number of small cities, towns and villages.

All the same, Kiev is the prize, for strategic, historical, and propaganda reasons.

The “West” (NWO/ZOG) is escalating the Ukraine conflict by stepping up supplies of arms, ammunition, other supplies too; also, by providing technical military training in the UK and elsewhere.

God knows what the ultimate consequence will be; quite possibly a massive nuclear conflict across Europe and beyond.

Absurd. If “grifter” “Jack Monroe” wants to call herself that instead of her birth name (Melissa Hadjicostas) then that is a matter for her, just as it is not her right to try to prevent others calling her (or, as she apparently prefers, “them“) “Melissa Hadjicostas” rather than “Jack Monroe” or, indeed, “grifter“.

As of today, the 635 utter mugs who pay “Jack Monroe” money monthly via Patreon (for nothing in return, “Jack Monroe” having failed to fulfil her promises) are still signed up… They must be masochists. She mocks them, openly.

…and even now you sometimes hear that ridiculous slut, Clare Moseley, on radio and TV, bleating about the so-called “refugees” (migrant-invaders). The msm are just part of the enemy forces, enemies of the British people.

Many lunatics were empowered by the ridiculous facemask nonsense, and by the whole “panicdemic” narrative, and were able to at least try to force their malice, and their petty dictatorial tendencies on stray people they encountered . Now they have been forced back into their boxes, at least for now, and the same goes for all those would-be retail NCOs and social “police”, demanding that shoppers stand here, go there, keep 6 feet from the next pawn etc. They are now back at work, stacking shelves.

Lincoln, Garfield, McKinley, Kennedy…Biden? Probably not, but time will tell.

Simon Pegg. Actor, apparently. I had not heard of him and, looking at him, have never seen him on TV either. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simon_Pegg.

Not that I disagree with him about Sunak’s “study maths until age 18” nonsense. The most important thing in that regard is to drill very basic maths (multiplication, subtraction, division) into pupils aged 7 or so. I constantly meet young and not so young cashiers at Waitrose who literally cannot work out how many lottery tickets are necessary for X-number of lines at Y-number per ticket. Some have to use a calculator!

Of course, “@TheFreds” are quite right: changing the colour of the deck chairs on the Titanic changes nothing but the scenery.

More lies from “Jack Monroe”

Serious pathological/psychological condition, I think.

I posed the question weeks, and I think even months, ago as to whether “Jack Monroe” sometimes makes up things and rolls out a pack of lies almost daring people to accuse her of lying, as in (to take a few examples only) that she was “on the game” (prostitution) in Essex (by reason of impecuniosity), that she attended the Grenfell Tower fire (60+ miles from where she lives), was “waved through the police cordon” (oh yes, the police would really allow a stray interfering rubbernecker to go through…) and even had plans of the building (why would she? How could she?).

The “Bootstrap Cook” said that she was so poor that she had to sell her small son’s toy dinosaur, that she had to take out lightbulbs in order not to waste electricity, and that she had to boil soap to make shower gel (which does not even stack up logically, when 90p shower gel lasts for 1-3 weeks with daily use, and when boiling soap costs money in itself; and why not just use the soap instead of trying to make gel out of it?). Ludicrous.

On several occasions, I have been certain in my own mind that her lies must amount to her thinking “surely the sad bastards won’t buy this one?!“, and then they (those who defend her to the marrow) do buy whatever absolute crap she comes out with at any given moment; while also (631 utter mugs as of today) each sending her between £3.50 and £44 a month!

In other words, at times she is certainly, in the well-known phrase, “having a laugh”, a laugh at the expense of the mugs subsidizing her and the others promoting her, the latter including Nigella Lawson, at least a couple of Labour MPs, and of course the media rats from the Guardian, Observer, BBC and Channel 4.

I think that “Jack Monroe” lies mainly because she enjoys inventing a fake or 90% fake narrative, and because she enjoys making absolute mugs out of those who not only defend her as a supposed —if risible— “champion of the poor” but who also send money to her!

She herself has said recently that her basic lifestyle, inc. rent, utilities, food, adds up to about £4,000 a month. The 631 utter mugs subsidizing her are anyway sending more than that (I am guessing about £6,000 but it may be more) each month.

I have no idea who that particular mug is, nor whether his/her problem is a mental illness or just plain everyday stupidity, but imagine taking money off someone like that on the false promise/threat that Con Party MP, Lee Anderson, was going to be sued for stating, entirely truthfully, something along the lines of the assertion that “Jack Monroe” is basically a fraud (at very least, a “grifter”) “living off the backs of the poor“, which is exactly what she is and does.

It is obvious that “Jack Monroe” is not going to sue Lee Anderson and/or Martin Daubney, though she has hinted at “things going on behind the scenes etc”.

Rubbish. Technically, she has 3-4 months left before the one-year limitation applies, but Lee Anderson has apparently not even received any letter before action.

It’s another “Jack Monroe” lie, in other words.

I think that “Jack Monroe” has one main intent, which is to be the centre of attention. Nothing else. I believe, rightly or wrongly, that even the money she gets from mugs etc. is very secondary to that central narcissism.

Incidentally, the “media folk” are still promoting her— there are a couple of articles even today in the Metro newspaper, giving “tips” and a recipe, and no mention of the scandal(s).

[Ava Gardner in Pandora and the Flying Dutchman]

Strange to see: I was just reading about Ava Gardner [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ava_Gardner] and saw that she died in 1990, aged 67, at at her home in Ennismore Gardens, Kensington (London), near Kensington Gardens, where she had lived since 1968. I never knew. Had I thought of it at all, I probably would have assumed that she lived in either California or New York City.

I have only been to that exact place once, I think; in the very early 1980s, with someone escorting the then Metropolitan of Kiev (a kind of Russian Orthodox archbishop, the second-highest prelate of that church) who was then visiting London. The Russian Orthodox Cathedral of the Dormition is at the end of a kind of hidden-away cul de sac there. We dropped him there, and were invited in (no-one else was around, as far as I can recall). The Metropolitan kindly gave me a bottle of Moskovskaya vodka.

In other words, only 1 person out of every 235 is on the side of “Jack Monroe” and her tweet.

Most supporters of the “Bootstrap Cook” effectively say, on the larger scale, “let’s bin the Tories. Once ‘Labour’ are in government, everything will be fine, or start to be fine“…

Does anyone with any sense actually believe that? The migration-invasion (both across the Channel and otherwise) will continue unchanged in numbers, and Rachel Reeves and her fellow Labour Friends of Israel MPs will be even harder on the unemployed, disabled etc than the fake “Conservatives” have been— she said so expressly.

In a binary political system, and one where both main System parties are really almost identical, you cannot change things very much by squashing one party at some election or other, because the other one is thereby strengthened, and the “Deep State” policies continue largely unchanged.

That Tom Doorley person is an Irish restaurant critic, who has been oddly biased in favour of the “Bootstrap Cook” for some time; see also https://www.tomdoorley.com/about.

Very true, though I doubt an accurate quotation. Or am I just too nice? I see various journalists tweeting that.

There we have it. Lisa Nandy proclaiming the gospel of the most extreme “trans” nonsense. Naturally. After all, she is one of the principal NWO/ZOG puppets in the UK Labour Party. Pro-mass immgration (the Coudenhove-Kalergi Plan) and the migration-invasion, pro “the Great Reset” and “the Great Replacement”, the most extreme “Covid” “measures” etc etc. The “trans” nonsense is all part of that, destructive to the structure of society, destructive even to logic. All part of the strategy.

The above is a reply from “Jack Monroe”, “Bootstrap Cook”, to yet another naive supporter. It has been claimed (with, in my opinion, much evidence to back it up) that “Jack Monroe has a well-used line of defences when accused of cheating people, “scamming” money etc. One is to claim that she is afraid of being attacked, another is to use her still-young son as a reason to be afraid (i.e. that he will somehow be attacked), another is to use mental health or whatever as a reason not to address what seems to me to be the clear evidence of “grifting” amounting to near-fraud. I think that the police should be investigating the claims.

The threat above continues below:

…yet “Jack Monroe” still has 643 utter mugs each sending her between £3.50 and £44 every month. Thousands, perhaps tens of thousands, of pounds per month.

That refers to the crowdfunder set up in May 2022 by “Jack Monroe”, ostensibly to sue MP Lee Anderson [Con., Ashfield]. She told all the newspapers that she had “instructed” a solicitor, though that may well have been a lie; newspapers carried the story on 15-16 May 2022, but there has been no news since, and the accusation is that she has simply used whatever was raised for her own purposes. Certainly she has not attempted to address those and other concerns people have about her money-grubbing and alleged frauds or near-frauds.

Lee Anderson and Martin Daubney, the supposed targets of the apparently non-existent defamation action, say that they have never heard from either the “Bootstrap Cook” or her solicitor (if any).

“Jack Monroe” maintains a number of Twitter “sock accounts” with which she engages critics while pretending to be [whoever].

Ha. The half-Jewish Nigella Lawson operates on a far higher financial level than “Jack Monroe”, and certainly has no need to cheat her readers or viewers out of money. She seems, though, to have been taken in by “Jack Monroe’s” whole “poverty campaigner” act, and has endorsed her, though that was years or a number of months ago. I expect that Nigella Lawson is now trying to quietly drop “Jack Monroe”, just like several naive msm editors.

[Correction, 20 May 2023: in fact, I now realize that NIgella Lawson is not half-Jewish, but full-Jew. My mistake].

Ah, yes, I remember seeing that greasy little Jew on TV a decade ago, before he was caught out, after which he played the “mental health”/”rehab” card.

Oddly enough, despite being a Jew descended from two racially-Jewish parents, he has apparently espoused Roman Catholicism: see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brooks_Newmark. It’s quite funny: many people say that Rishi Sunak is “really” British, because born in the UK, possessing a British passport, and having been educated at Winchester. In reality, his origins are ingrained, as they are with all of us. Nurture builds on Nature. Thus we see Sunak acting as an Indian Prime Minister in India would act, handing out perks to his cronies and senior employees.

The slide to nuclear conflict is obvious, despite the protestations on both sides to the contrary.

Temps perdu

Some years ago, I noted on the blog that my old head of chambers, one M.B., a pretty good civil barrister, had been appointed to the office of Circuit Judge. Now I see that no fewer than three other fellow-members of the same chambers (now and for some time joined with another set under a new name) have also received judicial preferment.

The first, one “R.P.”, was, as I recall him from over 15 years ago, a small and rather dapper man, maybe about 40 at that time, unfailingly polite, who had been a magistrates’ court clerk for many years, and had written a very well-received book on sentencing, as well as (and I only saw that today) several other books on law and procedure. Someone both erudite and modest, a good combination.

I see just now (thanks to the Internet) that R.P. is 56-57.

R.P., a man so modest and self-effacing that I know nothing about him on the personal level, despite having been in the same chambers as him for at least a couple of years (I was there 2002-2008, he for not so long), was (if I recall aright) nominally a “pupil” at first, having been previously a solicitor (again, if I recall correctly); as said, he had spent years as a magistrates’ clerk.

R. P. is therefore now “His Honour Judge R.P.” and has been, as they say, “deployed” to the North East as a Circuit Judge. In the old days, pre-1970s, people would practice almost entirely on one circuit, such as Western Circuit, Midland and Oxford etc, and if granted judicial preferment, would be appointed, almost always, on that Circuit. Now, however, they can be sent anywhere within England and Wales.

The other two appointments seen by me were those affecting two people who were, like R.P., both pupils of M.B. twenty-odd years ago. When I knew them, they were both in their early twenties, so must be about 45 now. Let us call them, in the manner of M.R. James, “JB” and “AW”.

J.B, a pleasant-enough fellow, and rather likeable, albeit no intellectual (if I recall aright), and who came from an affluent family (his father is or was a businessman involved in trade with China), has been appointed both as an employment judge (i.e. at the Employment Tribunal) and also as a Deputy District Judge (which is same level, really, as a full District Judge, but only sitting for 15-50 days per year).

As for A.W., I recall him as a serious and bearded young man, bordering however on the humourless (admittedly, I only spoke with him a few times); intelligent, and who, with his wife (whom I never met), actually played music live at least once on either BBC Radio 3 or BBC Radio 4 at that time, i.e. about 16-17 years ago.

A.W. is apparently appointed District Judge as of early January 2023, and has been deployed to Worthing in West Sussex.

Such appointments as District Judge etc may seem minor (there are c.400 full District Judges in England and Wales) but actually such jobs are not badly-paid— about £114,000 p.a. at time of writing (Circuit Judges get more, about £145,000).

I can see why barristers often apply for such jobs. They carry none of the uncertainty which can be part and parcel of being a barrister, such as where the next brief will come from; also (for barristers of a certain age) there is the attraction of a generous pension scheme, something unknown to the Bar (unless you pay out for a private one). Also, the judge (at any level) does not have the need to travel much, if at all, whereas a barrister in a provincial set can travel extensively.

When I myself was in London as a practising barrister (early/mid 1990s), almost all my cases were within London itself (often at the High Court, a shortish No. 6 bus, or a taxi, ride from my then home in Little Venice); but when I was based in Exeter in 2002-2008 (and living 50 miles west of there, on the Cornwall-Devon border), I sometimes had to travel as far north as Manchester, and as far east as London, Cambridge, Brighton etc. 600-mile roundtrips. I even made the odd overseas journey, though admittedly that also happened when I lived in London.

Always interesting to see what is happening over time to those whom I knew in the past.

Finally, I should add that I have no idea whether those I used to know, and who have been appointed to the judiciary, are freemasons. Possibly. Not impossible, anyway, thinking back to when I knew them, and thinking about what I do know of them.

Why did no-one shoot him, or just run over the bastard in a car? Covid “panicdemic”

Well, there it is. Proof that hugely loss-making Twitter was both (as I speculated years ago on the blog) acting as an intelligence-collecting system for NWO/ZOG, and also proof that —time and again— the overall public debate or discussion in the “online forum” or “online public space” is —and in the case of Twitter, especially, was— being twisted by Twitter staff (etc); also offline (by the usual msm suspects). The “online public space“, as I termed it on the blog, as well as in my 2017 talk offline, at the now-defunct London Forum— with others later imitating my language and reasoning.

What at first surprised me slightly, years ago, was that I could see that the usual crowd of “human rights” lawyers, bien-pensants, “liberal” msm types, anti-censorship loudmouths, pseudo-socialists etc (many, but by no means all, Jews) were in fact perfectly OK with a secretive transnational finance-capital offshoot such as Twitter censoring dissenting views, and/or “deplatforming” dissidents and/or persons labelled “neo-Nazi” etc.

The mask of Evil has slipped a little as regards Twitter, but remains firmly in place in respect of other online and offline platforms.

This is not just about the Covid “panicdemic”. It applies also to other matters, especially the constant Coudenhove-Kalergi propaganda being blasted out across the TV, radio, newspapers etc.

I happened to see a copy of Vogue magazine the other day, not my usual reading material. Flicking through it for a few seconds, I noticed that almost every photo and report was basically about blacks, and pushing blacks forward, to an almost unbelievable extent. No one is going to tell me that that is simply about making money for the publishers. There is something more behind it all. See also: https://ianrobertmillard.org/2018/12/10/tv-ads-and-soaps-are-the-propaganda-preferred-by-the-system-in-the-uk/.

Returning to “Covid”, I see that the Chinese Government has now turned its massive state repression machinery into reverse, and almost overnight dismantled the “Covid” police state measures. According to Sky News in the UK, that has meant an increase in “cases” (whether labelled “influenza” or “Covid”-this-or-that. Of course.

The stupid “lockdowns” isolate people. When they have to be released (because to shut down society and economy indefinitely is unsustainable, impossible) naturally their immune systems have been weakened. “Lockdowns” were always the wrong policy, not only from the economic point of view (look at the UK, for example) but from the strict health point of view as well.

While on the subject of Twitter, I see that it continues to omit the (only-recently-dropped) “Latest” tweets column on any given subject or subject-name searched for. This really weakens the usefulness of Twitter.

Again, two dispiriting performances from the alumni teams (Cardiff v. Bristol), who displayed the ignorance which has been the hallmark of the series both last year and this year, and which by now I actually expect.

One who at least attempted to answer, though usually wrongly, was Dominic Waghorn of the Bristol alumni team, of whom I see that Wikipedia says this:

Dominic David Waghorn (born 1968, Lambeth),[1] is a British journalist who is the Diplomatic Editor of Sky News and presenter of the channel’s weekly international affairs analysis programme World View. He was before that US Correspondent of Sky News, the 24-hour television news service operated by Sky Television, part of British Sky Broadcasting. He is based at Sky News’ Washington Bureau. He was formerly Sky News’ Asia Correspondent, based in Beijing and Middle East Correspondent, based in Jerusalem. He became Sky News’ US Correspondent in 2011.”

[Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dominic_Waghorn]

That reads well, on paper, but that supposed “expert” not only failed to identify Volgograd as the “new” (since 1961) name for the city of Stalingrad, even after prompting from Jeremy Paxman, but then compounded his error by venturing “Voronezh?“, a city about 360 miles away, and in a different part of Russia.

There were several other errors by Waghorn and worse ones by others (those who actually tried to answer any questions at all).

The problem I have with these well-known and/or “celebrity” contestants is not only that their general-knowledge levels are, indeed, generally abysmal, but also a. that they are all people paid plenty of money by society as a whole, partly by reason of their supposedly “elite” education, and b. that those working in msm current affairs are delivering misinformation to the public on subjects such as Ukraine, European politics, and the “Covid” “panicdemic”.

Tweets seen about the show:

Good point (especially as I practically never get a popular music question right…).

Ha ha! That must be intended as good-humoured satire, surely? (from one of the subject’s colleagues on Sky News). Waghorn even failed to get right a fairly easy question about which seas were mentioned in Churchill’s famous post-WW2 speech at Fulton, Missouri, which brought the term “iron curtain” into popular speech (though Churchill had lifted the term from Schwerin von Krosigk, unless it was a simple co-incidence).

The seas in the question were Baltic and Adriatic, not (as Waghorn said) the Adriatic Sea and Black Sea. The other team also got that one wrong, incidentally, citing Baltic and Atlantic.

To be fair on him, Waghorn did get a few other questions right.

Interesting vlog

A few comments.

There have always been a certain, and in fact fairly high, number of foreign students qualifying at the Bar in London. Many go back to their own home countries to practise law. Some become leaders of those countries, one such leader having been Lee Kuan Yew, who “invented” Singapore as we know it today: see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lee_Kuan_Yew. Others too became not only national leaders but also founders of states: Gandhi was called to the Bar in London, as was Jinnah, the founder of Pakistan: see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mahatma_Gandhi; https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muhammad_Ali_Jinnah.

In Malaysia, it is a tradition that those who can, go to London to study law, and they have a particular affection for Lincoln’s Inn (my old Inn, at which though, thanks to the Jew-Zionist lobby, I am now effectively persona non grata).

Lincoln’s Inn is, even today, the Inn of Court to which most if not all Malaysian students apply, by reason of the fact that the first Prime Minister of Malaysia was a member: see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tunku_Abdul_Rahman.

Many of the Chinese names read out in that vlog are probably from Singapore, Hong Kong, or Malaysia, where the legal system is a derivation from the English.

Having said that, it is disturbing that there are so few English names. It may be, in part, because most of the English students pass the exams and then are Called to the Bar in the Trinity Term (Summer), rather than the Michaelmas Term (Autumn).

I have to admit that, while I saw some very low-quality black and brown barristers when I was practising at the Bar in the early/mid 1990s and then again in 2002-2008, I also saw some pretty rock-bottom English ones.

I do agree with the vlogger, though, that all barristers who are practising in chambers in England should be English or (real) British.

Incidentally, for those readers of the blog unaware as to why I am now no longer a barrister, please read the following: https://ianrobertmillard.org/2017/07/09/the-slide-of-the-english-bar-and-uk-society-continues-and-accelerates/.

I favour the “free at point of use” principle of the NHS, but it is becoming increasingly clear that the NHS is just not fulfilling its proper role. It is no answer just to say that more money is needed. More money may well be needed, but the whole thing has become a bureaucratic mess which is delivering poorer and poorer outcomes.

The “panicdemic” and, overall, all the nonsense which the NHS espoused (the facemask nonsense being just one) has broken something in the connection of the people with the NHS.

Hollywood is another Augean Stables, which should be cleansed, no matter what.

I did not know anything much about Sean Penn until today, when I read a bit about him. Needs a good kicking. Horrible bastard, it seems. I was also unaware, until today, that he is a half-Jew.

Ukraine

The war would have ended some time ago without the huge arms shipments (and transfers of cash) from USA, UK etc to the Kiev regime.

The items referrred to are those that Americans call “potbellied stoves”.

The Russian side is probably looking now at a stable front during the cold weather, assuming that it becomes really cold, with renewed advances in summer 2023.

While the strategic view is superficially not good for the Russian side (most of Ukraine as a whole remaining controlled by the Kiev regime, and most of eastern Ukraine too), the fact is that Ukraine is on life support. The electrical power system is being reduced to rubble, industry is almost at a standstill, something like 10%-20% of the population has fled, and both the armed forces and civilians are being kept going by the vast influx of aid from Western states, NGOs, and private charity.

Russia continues to control most of the coastal areas of the Sea of Azov and Black Sea, as well as Crimea, and most of the Donbass region.

As blogged some time ago, Russia needs to cut the Gordian Knot of this bogged-down attritional battle/war in the southeast of Ukraine. It has started by applying “oblique warfare”, mainly by reducing the electrical power system throughout the whole of Ukraine, but that alone will not achieve a breakthrough. Kiev remains the main target. Somehow, Kiev has to be taken, something which would have been not too difficult 8 or 9 months ago, but is far harder to accomplish today.

The alternative is a peace treaty, or at least a ceasefire, but the Kiev-regime side will not agree one without a withdrawal of all Russian forces, as well as delivering the (almost all Russian) population of Crimea into the hands of the Ukrainian/Kiev side. Impossible.

There may be an escalation in 2023 by the Russian side, something on a large scale.

More tweets seen

As the above tweets imply, it will be interesting to see how many “socially progressive” (in their own little minds) mugs send money to “Dr” Louise Raw in order, supposedly, to sue msm loudmouth Jeremy Clarkson and others.

Actually, I have just clicked the GoFundMe link posted by “Dr” Raw: in less than a day, she has raised nearly £6,000 of her £15,000 goal, from no less than —at time of writing— 125 utter mugs.

As the first tweeter, Barbara Rich, above, tweets, it is hard to see what could be the cause of action. Clarkson’s comments in the Sun “newspaper”, impolite though they were, do not amount to defamation (if I recall them aright), but are “mere vulgar insult”— not actionable. As to those remarks being “hate speech“, well that is not, in itself, actionable, and is also very much “in the eye of the beholder“, so to speak:

There is no cause of action here recognized by law, and not even (moving to the criminal realm) incitement. It is very doubtful that anyone would really be incited to chuck poo at Meghan Mulatta or to drag her through the streets (even were she in the UK, and even if she had no bodyguard force to protect her).

Most British people do at least distrust the Mulatta, and also despise both her and the “Harry Formerly Known As Prince”, but Clarkson’s remarks not only do not but could not amount to incitement of any kind.

As to lack of an identifiable claimant (“plaintiff”, as was)— that too. “Dr” Raw has no locus standi; who does? Only the Mulatta herself, were she foolish enough to get involved in “Dr” Raw’s hopeless idea.

I see that the GoFundMe says that “Although the legal route is expensive, I have received a lot of support already and have a team of lawyers who have agreed to review the case.

Note “review the case“.

Of course. It is an easy few thousand pounds for any barrister or solicitor (perhaps a cynical one) who can see that there is no chance, but who will provide an erudite and beautifully-printed Opinion or Advice saying (with much citing of case precedents, statutes, and obiter dicta) that the claimant (if there is any claimant as such) has no case.

When I was a practising barrister, I not infrequently had to (try to) save potential claimants from themselves by formally/informally telling them that they would be wasting their money. Sometimes they listened, sometimes they did not (would not). Sometimes people simply insist on going to law.

Once, about 28 years ago, I was asked to advise on whether a matter, already considered more than once by the Court of Appeal, the High Court, and (originally) an arbitrator, might go to what is now the Supreme Court of the UK (since 2009: see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supreme_Court_of_the_United_Kingdom; https://www.supremecourt.uk/about/history.html), but which was then still called the House of Lords (Judicial Committee). The brief was (literally) heavy, and the fee more than acceptable.

I found that there was no possibility of being able to take the matter to the House of Lords, and spent a couple of days writing a detailed Advice to that effect. That resulted in the potential claimant (already declared a “vexatious litigant” by the Court of Appeal) storming into my London chambers, storming past the Clerk and others, and demanding that I explain (again) why he could not take his —in any event, hopeless— case to the House of Lords. A colleague who was there was so concerned (that I might be assaulted by this large, heavily-bearded, and very angry, man) that he volunteered to help me elucidate the issues to the furious would-be litigant (who, after 20 minutes or so, stormed out and off).

There were several similar though less incipiently-violent incidents with other clients unable to accept reality. I expect that many barristers have had similar experiences.

Incidentally, the reason I call Louise Raw (who has more than once tweeted very silly things about me) “Dr“, in quotation marks, is that (as I have already blogged about in the past), in England, it has always been accepted that the title “Doctor” should not be used as a title by people who have simply had a doctorate, such as a Ph.D, granted to them after having spent a year on some course or other, and (presumably) written a thesis.

The title “Dr” should, as a general rule, only be used by bona fide academics, bona fide scientists attached to recognized institutes, persons in holy orders, or by medical doctors (in fact, medical doctors often do not actually have a doctorate— the “Dr.” is simply a courtesy title in their case).

There is no law about all that, it is simply custom; it is considered infra dig in England to use the title, usually. In Germany etc, no such custom exists. Thus Joseph Goebbels was “Dr. Goebbels” because he had a doctorate in Philology from Heidelberg [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_Goebbels].

I have no idea from what university “Dr” Raw got her doctorate, which was apparently based around her thesis about the strike, in 1888, by women employees at the Bryant & May match factory in East London. “Dr” Raw has always been rather reticent about where she studied (though I have no reason to doubt that she has a “doctorate”).

Likewise, I have no reason to suppose that “Dr” Raw intends to keep for her own use the monies raised by her GoFundMe appeal. It does occur to me, though, that the appeal raises her (?) faded political profile on Twitter. Perhaps that is her motivation, or part of it.

I might add that some MPs and others, meaning some (other) odd types seen on Twitter, also misuse the “Doctor” title.

Hard to believe that the editor of a major trade publication could be so unaware.

Christmas University Challenge

As on previous occasions, I have to say that I scored far better than the teams of alumni (Durham and York) this evening, all or almost all of whom were possessed of professorial status (if not knowledge— at least outside their narrow, mostly scientific, specialisms).

A few tweets make the point:

Very true. Tends to be, or so I was once told, the place for people who wanted to go to Oxford or Cambridge but were rejected. I once, in the late 1980s, met an entirely ridiculous man at a dinner party in Blackheath. I was at the Inns of Court School of Law at the time, belatedly; he was a barrister, possibly already QC. No doubt competent in the law, but otherwise a complete idiot. Durham graduate. Later, he was not only QC but also a Recorder in England and, I believe, a civil/commercial judge in Hong Kong, among other things. I believe from what my then girlfriend told me that his family were prominent in the (English) Civil War. Is that typical of Durham University? I do not know.

I see from Twitter that I am not alone in finding the teams on Christmas University Challenge egregiously ignorant. This evening, one team did not know the (old-style calendar) month of the Bolsheviks’ 1917 Revolution (i.e. October Revolution); they, or the other team, also not only missed the Second Symphony of Shostakovitch but (one of them) thought that Tchaikovsky had written it! In 1927!

Another fairly easy question that seemed to puzzle the teams was the name of a famous “female Anglo-Iraqi architect” (Zaha Hadid, now deceased). I mean, how many can there be? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zaha_Hadid.
