Branson may not have had quite the stratospheric privilege of “Prince” Harry, but his grandfather was a High Court judge, and a trust fund paid for Branson’s education at Stowe. More interestingly, when Branson committed a large-scale Customs fraud (in the early 1970s), the judge sentencing him at the Crown Court let him off with a ยฃ50,000 fine (maybe half a million today), which his family was able to pay. The judge noted that, usually, the penalty would have been a substantial prison sentence.
I cannot think of one good thing Branson has done for the UK.

Even that is not a complete list. The HS2 vanity rail project continuing, with huge environmental loss, unemployment likely to increase before long despite recent optimistic figures, housing becoming even more of an issue, and no serious attempt to reform social care for the aged and infirm. A general slow slide in standards across the board.
All that (and more— think cronyism and corruption), yet Labour under Keir Starmer makes very little headway. Why?
In fact there have been a few opinion polls, over the past 6 months, placing Labour alongside or even ahead of the Conservatives, but not many. In any event, the leader of a party is arguably the most important factor in any general election in the UK.
Starmer’s strong suits? “Cares about people“; “in touch [with the masses]”. I seem to remember that Jeremy Corbyn scored even better on those aspects, not long before Labour crashed at the 2019 General Election.
Exactly. That last tweeter has hit the nail on the head. There has to be a coherent plan to solve the problems of the UK. Not an over-detailed “fully costed” accountant’s plan, but a general yet clear way forward. This is where Labour is failing.
As said previously by both me and others, Starmer’s appeal goes something like “we support the government’s reintroduction of 19thC workhouses, but they must be run more efficiently, fairer, while both wearing a facemask and bending the knee to the blacks.”
There is nothing much in Starmer-Labour to appeal to voters. What is offered is pretty much the same as offered by the Conservative Party: the same (or stricter) “virus” nonsense, the same (or stricter) real-terms cuts to State benefits and pensions, the same (or worse) mass non-white immigration.
In fact, Starmer-Labour’s only real points are “we would be more efficient than the Conservatives” (maybe, maybe not) and —Labour’s best point— “we are not the Conservative Party“. Labour hopes that, in a binary political system, enough people will want “Boris” out for them to vote Labour. Doubtful.
As a strategy, the above is pretty pathetic, but it is all that they have.

Looking at the substance of what I wrote a year ago, I think that it has stood up well overall, though the situation vis a vis Labour and Conservative parties has changed, indeed out of all recognition, because I had thought that the Conservative Party would ditch idiotic public entertainer “Boris” Johnson and then install some superficially more presentable leader, instead of which —astonishingly— it has selected and elected a leader of surpassing ineptitude and, moreover, without a figleaf of a popular (or even party) mandate— Liz Truss. Hard to believe.
The result of having Liz Truss as unmandated, unelected (in any real sense) and plainly out of her depth “Leader”, has collapsed popular support for the Conservative Party.
Labour has therefore surged in the popular estimation purely by default. Hard to see that changing as long as Liz Truss remains as Conservative Party leader and Prime Minister.
At present, the question seems to be just how far the Conservative Party will fall, in terms of MP numbers (from the present 357). 300 seems inevitable, 200 not unlikely, and even 100 not impossible.
Amusing that the Jewish Chronicle has focussed on the fact that many voters will not vote for Kim Leadbeater (Labour candidate) because she is a lesbian whose party leader, Starmer, is a very obvious puppet of the Jew-Zionist/Israel lobby:

I read a couple (certainly one) of Mason’s books. On economics he is interesting, informed, and sometimes correct. On politics, though, he is a joke, completely hopeless. Somewhere in the middle of a mess of Trotskyist, syndicalist, and “anti-fascist” nonsense. Incongruent, and often ignorant. He is part-Jew, too, a fact not generally known. Like another part-Jewish scribbler, Owen Jones, he likes to talk in terms of “class struggle”, and is as out of date as the Berlin Wall, if not the Front Populaire.
At the end of the day, if Labour wins at Batley and Spen, all that happens is that another member of the same family as Jo Cox gets a “nice little earner”, and Keir Starmer gets a reprieve as Labour leader. The area and its people get absolutely nothing. The Conservatives at Westminster will still have a majority of 80.
If the Conservative Party candidate wins at Batley, the area may get more government assistance, financial or otherwise. The Conservatives at Westminster will have a majority of 81 instead of 80. No real difference to them, but Batley area might benefit.

The by-election is being held tomorrow. I thought to add my last-minute thoughts.
As I blogged previously, I see no prospect of any upset to the expected Conservative victory in that constituency. Even in 1997, the Conservative Party vote topped 50%, and has exceeded 63%. 55.4% in 2019.
Incumbency is usually helpful to a candidate, so it is an open question as to whether the new Conservative candidate will get a very high vote-share in what is, after all, a by-election.
It may be that there will be a protest vote favouring the LibDems, but I doubt that it will be anything like enough to dislodge the Conservatives. The LibDem vote in 2019 was 26.3%.
The Green Party scored 5.5% in 2019, and it may be that that will increase at the expense of Labour. At any rate, it is hard to see many people bothering to vote Labour after Starmer’s lacklustre and indifferent attitude at Prime Minister’s Questions today.

Alison Chabloz is now being prosecuted on the same alleged facts, but under anotherAct with a far less severe maximum penalty on conviction (her trial is set down for one day on 1 September 2021).

It seems that she will now be released having served half her headline 18-week sentence, but minus the 4 days and part-days that she served in 2020 prior to her successful appeal.
The firm expectation now is that Alison will be released from prison on Friday 28 May 2021 (i.e. the day after tomorrow).
Alison’s appeal against conviction and sentence will be heard on 3-4 June 2021 in the Crown Court, probably at Southwark.

Indeed. Neither is that urge to exert petty power confined to the police. All the heretofore gophers and wage slaves such as receptionists, supermarket cashiers, shop staff generally, have been rather enjoying their (presumed, assumed) power to tell visitors to adjust their masks, stand back etc. Some stray idiots started to tell complete strangers they encountered, or who were nearby, to do so! I see less of that now, compared to a few months ago, probably because the mask zealots got barked at a few times by freedom-fighters or dissidents (like me!)…

Needless to say, I have little time for Raheem Kassam, another of the “alt-Right” or “alt-Lite” wastes of space (Breitbart, “Prison Planet” Watson, “Sargon of Akkad” Carl Benjamin, Katie Hopkins etc), but it is telling that Kassam’s online newspaper has now been suspended (removed) from Twitter. I was expelled, David Icke has been expelled. Many others as well.

Today is the 103rd anniversary of the Bolshevik seizure of power in Russia, a coup d’etat in one city of one corner of a vast empire, which flame spread like a wildfire across those huge territories. A cataclysmic and largely catastrophic event. Probably the single biggest reason why Russia does not today rule the world, or is not at least the most influential state…
The Russian Revolution, that is the real one, in early 1917, not the mainly Jewish putsch headed by Lenin in October (old-style) 1917, did not emerge from nowhere. The social inequities under Tsarism provided the fuel, then events (not Bolshevik propaganda) provided the spark that set that fuel alight.
The Bolsheviks were in fact almost an irrelevance until 1917. Their numbers seem to have been between 5,000 and 50,000 until that year. Lenin himself was not even in Russia until two months after the first or real revolution of 1917. His putsch merely took over an existing situation.
I doubt that many, in the Russia of, say, 1913 or 1914, could have predicted that the Imperial state (and society) would fall so easily and so comprehensively.

The above echoes my recent experience of having visited a small hospital in Southern England a few times and briefly. Almost deserted.
I see that Littlejohn compares the “virus” madness, and the behaviour of the police and others, and just as I did a day or two ago, to the film The Lives of Others, about people in the pre-1990 DDR (East Germany). Or does Littlejohn read my blog? (he also uses some of my typical phrasing…). Actually, quite a few journalists and MPs (etc) do read my blog.

I have had a few experiences in recent years that actually surprised me re. police, about how ignorant of the law they often are and how unwilling they are to be instructed even by me, a former barrister who appeared many times not only in the lower courts (magistrates’ courts, Crown Court, County Court) but also in the High Court.
