As regular readers will know, I was recently convicted under a law (Communications Act 2003, s.127) which the Law Commission has recommended for repeal, and simply by reason of a few remarks and cartoons, some about Jewish behaviour, allegedly posted on this blog.
As recently as the 1990s, there was still at least some freedom of expression left. No more. “They” (mostly, but together with the whole “woke” movement, the “antifa” idiots etc) have killed it. You often hear or see the statement “The Third Reich was terrible because [whatever].” Often cited is euthanasia of the terribly mentally or even physically disabled etc. Few consider that that or similar happened also in the USA, UK etc in the 1930s, though not often admitted to.
When people today say that they are, say, Roman Catholic, do other people say “so you support the Inquisition?!” or “so you support the torture and genocide of the Cathars?!” No…yet the same or similar questioners might say to someone who is social-national politically, “so you support euthanasia of the badly-disabled?!” or “you support gassing Jews?!” (leaving aside the doubtful proposition about whether the fabled “gas chambers” even existed). They might as well demand an answer to the question “so you want to invade Poland?!“.

I have not been sentenced yet (late January 2024 or February 2024). Several aspects of the initial Hamas attack on southern Israel last month struck me at the time and thereafter. First, the fact that the Gazan forces were able to plan and carry out such an operation at all. Secondly, that they were able to keep up what seems to have been complete operational security until “D-Day”. Thirdly, that it took Israeli Army forces 12 hours to arrive.
Israel is a kind of armed camp. Most citizens are liable for full-time or reserve service, Israel spends over 5% of GDP on military activity, and it is constantly on alert, yet here we see that there was a large-scale incursion at a known flashpoint (the Gaza border region), and it took Israeli forces 12 hours to respond effectively.
The relatively short distances also make that response time seem long; Tel Aviv itself is only 44 miles from the Gaza northern border, and perhaps another 10-20 miles to the scenes of attack.
There have been “conspiracy theories” asking whether this was a “Pearl Harbor”, i.e. did the Israeli Government know in advance, but allow the attack to happen, in order to have an excuse to reduce Gaza to rubble and destroy both Hamas and much of the population?
That theory sounds monstrous and also unlikely, but it cannot be ruled out, especially with factors such as the offshore oil.

Town planning thoughts
Since the recent contretemps began, and in fact for long before that, I have been struck by the quite pleasant layout of many of the newer Israeli towns and settlements. Wide main streets, plenty of green spaces and trees, an absence of litter. What a contrast to Gaza!
Of course, part of that is by reason of the “apartheid“-style socio-economic situation in Israel/Palestine, and parallels South Africa in the pre-ANC days. That, however, is not the whole truth. I have seen some of the cities and towns in the Middle East, particularly in Egypt, and some look not much different to Gaza.

Despite my overall world-view, I had considered the lady’s resignation from the Country Club principled, if unnecessary, and the blackballing uncultured, in the circumstances. However, the line does have to be drawn somewhere. Once on a slope, you start to slide.
