My parents were friendly, long ago, in the late 1970s and 1980s, with a number of Irish people who lived in the counties around Dublin; they were all involved with racing, or other equine activities, in some way. One couple were involved in training horses, and the husband, whose name I forget (thanks to Google help, I recall now) was Tom Taaffe, who rode the Grand National winner, Quare Times, in 1955. I never met him, but did meet his very charming wife in England; that would have been late 1970s, maybe 1977 or 1978. Sometime around then.
I recall visiting, in 1985 or 1986, the home of one family of that circle; my parents were staying there at the time. Punchestown House, near Naas, County Kildare. The family, Doyle by name, were wealthy Roman Catholics involved in all sorts of business. They also owned a stud farm there.
Their home was a very comfortable large modern house, and what interested me was that, right there, a stone’s throw away, stood the ruins of the original house, 18thC but totally taken over by Nature. No roof to speak of, and no window glass. There was even a big tree growing through the remains of the roof area.
I suppose that English people in that position might try either to rescue the old house (if at all feasible), or build a modern copy. Perhaps, anyway.
Triggered by that memory, I just used incredible Google AI to bring back the detail I had forgotten. I see now that that one of that hospitable couple’s sons, Jack Doyle, an Olympic showjumper sponsored by Kerrygold, and whom I met (mid-1980s) in both England and Ireland, is still involved in all such activities— showjumping, stud farm etc.
Google AI is an incredible resource. I just fed in a few details about how my father and I drove to visit a lady (friendly with that Doyle family) and who lived at Baltyboys House, Blessington, County Wicklow, not very far away, a house previously the home of famous ballerina Ninette de Valois. Our hostess filled us up with Irish whiskey in mid-afternoon, and was very hospitable. I knew no more of the background until today, and now only thanks to Google AI.
Turns out that that lady, an Australian, was the wife of famous racing trainer Vincent O’Brien. I had no idea until today. I thought at the time that she was probably a widow. Turns out that Vincent O’Brien lived mainly elsewhere, in another large house, in Tipperary. Well said. Political leadership is not the same as being an Army or Royal Marines officer (you cannot simply command people and events, and decisions have to be more nuanced). As the tweeter says, neither is political leadership similar to being a senior legal figure such as the DPP (you cannot simply lay down rules and regulations and/or threaten to use “the full force of the law” when people do not agree).
Come to that, political leadership is also unalike to being a top-level businessman, as Trump is proving to the world. Not everyone wants to “make a deal“. Some people will not “make a deal” under any circumstances, because they or their group, clan, or people are motivated not by a quantifiable outcome such as profit and loss, but by ideology, or religion, or even a wish for “death or (and/or) glory”. Such people often do not much care if they themselves end up worse off (objectively) without a so-called “deal”.

Carns’ speech is wrong in its characterization of the Attlee government of the mid/late 1940s. Saw a long recording of the final director’s cut of the famous film, Apocalypse Now. More than impressive, and makes much more sense than the usual much-cut-down version that I have seen in the past.
Quite many films have been butchered; to what extent, you only understand once you see fuller versions: The Wicker Man (1973) is far far better in the rather longer versions. I once had a copy of the Director’s Cut version.
One film that I thought only just made sense when I first saw it in France is Les Rivieres pourpres. I read later that the director had cut out a high proportion of the film as originally made; as far as I know, no longer cut exists in the public domain.

While I imagine it would be possible for American forces to take and make a bridgehead on some shore, or offshore island, and possible even keep that area occupied for a considerable time, the USA has not the strength, or the will, and certainly not the airlift capacity, to invade Iran and occupy it, or a large part of it.
Iran is the 17th-largest country by area in the world (Iraq is the 58th-), has about 93M inhabitants (Iraq has about 46M).
The land area alone is vast: about 7x the size of that of the UK, 3x the size of Ukraine and, while of course smaller than that of the USA (Iran is about a 6th of the size of the whole USA), still about the size of Alaska or, to put it another way, 4x the size of California 10x the size of Florida, or 12x the size of the State of New York.
Bottom line— the USA, were it to attempt invasion, would be unable to occupy or hold more than a small part of Iran. Kharg Island, maybe, but only at the cost of constant drone and rocket attack on that island and on all ships in the Strait of Hormuz.
The Iranians seem to be repeating their mistake of 2025, attacking all over the place rather than concentrating their resources on a few key targets (which to me would be the ben-Gurion Airport, central Tel Aviv, and the Dimona nuclear area. That would leave many other potential targets unattacked, but not everywhere can be attacked with sufficient force. It was once said that “to govern is to choose“; same applies.

Betar lied to the jewish passengers and claimed they were just going to make a short stop in Turkey to ‘collect their visas for Palestine’.

Betar packed the bottom of the ship with bunkbeds so as to cram as many jewish passengers in as possible.
The diesel engine immediately failed when the Struma was getting out of the harbour in Romania.
The Romanian navy towed the Struma at Betar’s request out to sea and through the Axis minefields to make sure they were okay. Then the Romanians left while Betar tried to repair their diesel motor.
Betar failed to repair the Struma’s diesel engine and signalled distress. The Romanian navy returned and Betar demanded the Romanians fix their engine for free; the Romanians refused and requested to be paid for their time and the parts. Betar refused to pay the Romanians so the passengers paid the Romanians with their wedding rings instead; the Romanians then fixed the Stuma’s engine.
Two days later the Struma’s engine promptly failed again and she was towed into Istanbul harbour by the Turkish navy on 15th December 1941.
It was then revealed that Betar hadn’t arranged any visas to Palestine at all for the passengers or the Betar youth. The British refused them permission to migrate to Palestine as illegal immigrants (per the British White Paper of 1939 on this) and Turkey refused to grand them entry as illegal immigrants (so as to not encourage more such immigration and burden their tax payers and ports).
Weeks of negotiation followed between the British and Turks; the jews then ran out of food and refused to let Turkish police board the Struma. The result was the British honoured expired visas for Palestine held by a couple of the passengers plus granted visas to any jew who was 11-16 years old. While the Turks hospitalized one jew who was ill but the bulk of the jews didn’t fit this criteria. However neither the British or the Turks agreed to take these jewish illegal immigrants.
The Turkish government spent weeks trying to repair the Struma’s engine but failed. Eventually the Turkish authorities had had enough of jews demanding things from them (food, immigration visas, free repairs etc) so they towed the Struma out to international waters for jewish organizations or another country to sort out.
The Struma floats around a bit with no engine; jewish groups make no attempt to rescue the crew and passengers.
Soviet submarine Shch-213 on secret orders to engage in unrestricted submarine warfare sinks the Struma which is still overcrowded and only has two lifeboats.
The Turkish navy tries to effect a rescue but are too late.
