Whatever one may think of Peron and his wives, the fact is that political leadership is only one factor, albeit perhaps the most important, in whether a country is rich or poor (either overall as a country and notionally per capita, or in terms of how much that wealth is actually spread among the population).
Argentina was once a very wealthy country, certainly. Uruguay too. In fact, right up to the 1950s, Uruguay was one of the most prosperous countries in the world. A number of factors changed that.
There again, between 1918 and 1939, Estonia, Latvia and Czechoslovakia were very prosperous, and the citizens were, per head, much better off than the average of those in, say, the UK, France, or most other states. That changed mainly though not solely because of political changes and invasions, notably the Second World War and Soviet invasion (1940, and later 1944, in the case of the Pribaltika states; 1945 in the case of Czechoslovakia), Germany having also effectively occupied them during most of the war years.
Cuba was, economically, once a vibrant economy, albeit suffused with corruption and inequality. Castro’s socialist regime killed the economy. His decision to replace mixed farming with, mostly, a sugar monoculture (in the 1960s) worked up to a point, so long as the Soviet Union paid over the odds for sugar (and whatever else Cuba could export) but resulted in total collapse when the hidden subsidy was removed in the early 1990s.
Likewise, Cuba’s socialist experiment resulted in an end to development in the residential housing sector. Today, Havana and much of Cuba is falling to pieces, and people try to grow their own food if they can.
Some people say that the Cuban system is good re. medicine and education. “Education” in the basic sense perhaps, though obviously rigid in terms of what can and cannot be taught. As to medicine, perhaps so, again in a basic way, though.
The question is whether the supposed advantages of such a system are enough to compensate, both for the poor economy largely the result of that system and also for the harshness of the system politically and in terms of civil rights.
Russia before 1914 was arguably the fastest-growing economy in the world. War (lost war) and then civil war and political upheavals, followed by the socialist system —especially under Stalin from about 1928— weakened, and also distorted the economy. Collectivization, prioritization of heavy industry etc.
I recall reading the memoirs of the self-publicizing Jew Armand Hammer [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Armand_Hammer]; Hammer— Witness to History. He operated businesses in agreement with the Soviet Government during the 1920s, including a concession to produce pencils.
Hammer discovered that the best pencils were produced in Bavaria. He imported to Moscow both machines and German technicians.

Political direction is the single most important factor governing the prosperity of a country, but there are others. Where would the oil states of the Middle East be without demand for oil (and gas)? Back riding camels, almost certainly.

There again, Europeans (and Americans, who are basically European in origin) discovered the oil and gas, extracted it, knew how to refine it, and also exported it to European and other markets. Stray idea
If you take as a notional starting-point the idea that there are about 40 million people of or over the age of 21 in the UK, and if you consider that the UK has an area of about 92,000 sq. miles, which is about 60 million acres, then that works out at, very roughly, 1.5 acres per person.
Now let us assume that the State took ownership over about 4%-5% of that land, in other words less than a tenth of an acre per person, allotted to any applicant such a plot, and let such people use the land allotted to them in a manner akin to an “allotment” (or, if they want, to do nothing with “their” land, which would help wildlife at least). It might have a huge effect, as well as helping poor people to feed themselves.
The details might need refining, and the concept would need organization, but I think that the basic idea would work.
Incidentally, if any object that the idea involves “expropriation”, I reply that that is so, but it would merely redress a small part of the balance from the time of the “Enclosures” of common land, and/or the “Highland Clearances”. The aim is, however, not backward-looking “revenge” but forward-looking policy.

I do recall seeing, as a child of 10 (in 1967), several massive coffee-table-size books in the kitchen of my aunt-by-marriage, in Mosman, Sydney. I still recall the title of one: Larousse Gastronomique [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Larousse_Gastronomique]. A huge and thick hardback book.
I have no idea whether my uncle’s wife ever actually cooked anything. I certainly never saw her make anything there, and that kitchen was as pristine as the rest of her large house on the side of a bay (Middle Harbour). There again, she had a cleaning lady and no less than three Norwegian au pairs (there to “assist” with her two adopted children— a baby and a small child), so perhaps the lack of mess or detritus was not surprising.
There was in fact one time I when I saw the said relative make something; in a holiday beach house at Palm Beach (in the area now called the Northern Beaches, the very northmost part of the Sydney area, but it was not called that then). The food in question was lobster with home-made (I think) mayonnaise, the first time I had eaten either; consumed outside. I do not recall having either lobster or proper mayonnaise again until I was in my twenties.

It has been claimed (with, in my opinion, much evidence to back it up) that “Jack Monroe has a well-used line of defences when accused of cheating people, “scamming” money etc. One is to claim that she is afraid of being attacked, another is to use her still-young son as a reason to be afraid (i.e. that he will somehow be attacked), another is to use mental health or whatever as a reason not to address what seems to me to be the clear evidence of “grifting” amounting to near-fraud. That refers to the crowdfunder set up in May 2022 by “Jack Monroe”, ostensibly to sue MP Lee Anderson [Con., Ashfield]. She told all the newspapers that she had “instructed” a solicitor, though that may well have been a lie; newspapers carried the story on 15-16 May 2022, but there has been no news since, and the accusation is that she has simply used whatever was raised for her own purposes. Certainly she has not attempted to address those and other concerns people have about her money-grubbing and alleged frauds or near-frauds.
Lee Anderson and Martin Daubney, the supposed targets of the apparently non-existent defamation action, say that they have never heard from either the “Bootstrap Cook” or her solicitor (if any).

The idea that the NHS was somehow wonderful before 2010 or 2012 is just silly. I can recall seeing (as an almost daily visitor to a hospital, though not as patient) some appalling service and attitudes (as well as the opposite, and as well as surgical excellence) during the period 2012-2015, from only about 18 months after the 2010 General Election. It takes longer than 18 months for either positive or negative trends to develop in such a huge organization.
It is clear that maladministration is a major problem in the NHS, perhaps the major problem.

It is hard enough to beat a human grandmaster. In 1971 (I think), I took part in the Marlow International Chess Tournament, held in a school at Marlow, Buckinghamshire on a weekend in July. I camped in the grounds.
I took part in a “simultaneous exhibition”, in which a famous and very strong player takes on a number of others; in this case me and 19 others against Jana Hartston, a women’s grandmaster, former Czech women’s champion, and also (being then married to William Hartston, himself a grandmaster) British Women’s Champion.
I decided that I had no chance against her, so rather than trying to play seriously, started with a few conventional moves followed by an outrageously oblique one (not thought through at all). The result was mildly comical: the serious and youngish woman (she was herself only ~24 at the time; I was, I think, still 14) came swiftly around the rectangle of desks, each housing a chessboard. When she came for the third or fourth time to me, I made my move.
Madame Hartston paused, evidently puzzled for a moment, then made a swift move before moving on. I tried the same tactic again the next time round, but she barely paused.
I was checkmated after about 20 moves, if that, and was the second player to be beaten by her.
In the main tournament, I also fared badly, not lasting very long before being knocked out.

The Labour candidate, a woman who seems to have been a housewife/homemaker previously, as well as (from 2011) a councillor and (from 2015) leader of Cheshire West and Chester Council, scored 61.2%, Labour’s best-ever result in the constituency. The fact that she was brought up in, and has lived in, the area since the age of 4 cannot have hurt her campaign.
Conversely, the Conservative candidate did very badly, scoring 22.4%; the previous worst Con result was in 2001 (33.1%).
The LibDem, on 8.4%, was the only other candidate to retain his deposit. Their best result in a decade, but underwhelming when compared to where the LibDems were prior to the 2010-2015 “Con Coalition”.
Of the others, the only ones worth noting are the Greens (2.8%) and the new Farage vehicle, Reform UK (2.7%). The other four candidates scored 1% or below.
Thoughts? A very good result for Labour, despite it having been in a by-election. Labour’s previous best was 56.8% in 2017, which had been ahead of all other results, even that of 1997.
The voters are getting very tired of the Conservative Party, and even if they may not consider that Labour will do much if at all better on a number of issues, that alone cannot save Sunak and the Con Party.
Not much else to be said, except that Farage is proven once again a busted flush; his Reform UK party is not likely to get anywhere. Britain needs a real social-national party.
Finally, what did strike me was the low turnout— 41.2%, by far the lowest ever, though of course this was only a by-election. The previous-lowest turnout was in the General Election of 2001 (63.8%).
The low turnout might well indicate apathy, or apathy vis a vis the present political and voting system; it may also indicate anger and frustration, and a view that the present system cannot solve Britain’s problems.
Whatever the truth of that, the fact remains that 58.8% of eligible voters did not vote. How many were disaffected former Con voters unwilling to vote Labour or even LibDem? We do not know, but the fact is that 6,335 people voted Con at this by-election, compared with 20,918 in 2019 (when the turnout was 71.7%).
Britain has a basically binary political system. That only about 10% of eligible voters here cast a vote for the governing party must ring alarm bells at CCHQ.
[Note: incidentally, since writing the above, a few hours ago, I see that journalists and others are tweeting that the result was “the worst result for the Conservatives since 1832“. Not right.

Labour won the Chester by election with an 11% swing from the tories. But it was a 41% turnout. 6 in 10 people weren't interested in voting. I would've been one of them, nobody here represents me and mine. Our democracy is dying.
Short memory, it's certainly not as bad as the 'Winter of discontent' under Labour. At that time, bodies were stacked up in mortuaries, uncollected rubbish strewn along streets and essential services on the verge of collapse or on strike.
I never cease to be amazed at the ignorant comments made about the 1970s in the UK. The “Winter of Discontent” lasted for a couple of months in 1978-79, only really badly affected a few geographic areas, and even fewer urban areas had “bodies stacked up” etc, and not for long.
You also see people insistent that there were long periods of the 1970s with electrical blackouts etc. In fact, most areas did not have blackouts at all, even in the “three day week” period of late 1973.
The whole thing has been blown up into this fable in which a whole decade consisted of blackouts, nothing working, rubbish and corpses unburied or unburned, and a “three day week” which (according to the fable) lasted for years, rather than the few weeks it actually lasted.
What is actually alarming about some of those assertions is that they are made even by some people who were actually there at the time (as I was, incidentally: aged 17 in late 1973, and 22 in the winter of 1978-79). The fallibility of human memory is astounding at times; I notice it because I have always had an exceptional memory.

The Guardians
I have continued to watch The Guardians, for the first time since it was shown in 1971. Worth seeing. It should be put on again, perhaps on some nostalgia channel such as Talking Pictures TV:
To my mind, the series was better in its first half-dozen episodes; the final two episodes (12 and 13) are a little too talky, a little contrived too, and the ending was not so plausible, but overall the series was quite creditable, if very much of its time.
As with so many attention-seekers, “leaving Twitter” turned out to be a brief respite. As Basil Fawlty once said, “blink, and you’d miss it…as you did“.

Since I assessed Jack Monroe/Bootstrap Cook on the blog nearly 2 months ago, I have watched the debate about her unfold (it started in late July).
One thing that occurred to me, looking at some Twitter accounts, is that (in my opinion) several of those accounts supporting her fervently are, in fact “Jack Monroe” herself. That is purely my opinion, though based on a number of factors. The impression given is that, while many tweeters are critical of Jack Monroe, others, of various kinds, support her. Somehow, much of it does not ring true, though I concede that that is my opinion, and not something that I can call established fact.

What is amazing is how many tweeters are still apparently supportive of the “Bootstrap Cook”. From what I have seen, many appear to be virtue-signalling and/or dim women (not a few with mental health problems), and possibly eccentric older men. Few if any under 30, and most well over 50. Few, if any, “poor” or “struggling”. Most are apparently rather comfortably-off.
As of today, 667 “patrons” are wasting their money (up to £10 a month, every month) on “Jack Monroe” via the Patreon website, so she is receiving up to £6,670 per month in cash (minus any Patreon fees) from that source alone.
Of course, only the “Bootstrap Cook” knows how much her income is. If the 667 Patreon donors are all giving only £3.50 a month, then the monthly total reduces to £2,334.50, minus Patreon fees, if any. At least £2,000 in cash, anyway, every month.
Not a fortune, but “a nice little earner” all the same, as people are said to say. Especially when one considers that added to that are any other income sources, such as book royalties (she has 7 books in print, including a new one coming out in January 2023), any appearance fees or other msm payments, and any other and smaller payments such as Child Benefit (about £95 a month for one child).
I have long ago ceased to expect sense from most people, but the “let’s give money to ‘Jack Monroe’” thing is egregious even so, especially when many of those giving almost certainly have less money than her.

I wondered how long it would be before assertions of either physical illness or mental collapse would be wheeled out. Together with allegations that those on Twitter who are asking, inter alia, “where did the money go?“, are “bullying” her, or engaging in abuse and/or “harassment”.
There may be some truth in her above tweets (about her being stressed etc), but what strikes me is how there is still no addressing of the main allegations many have made against her: Patreon donors who were in many or most cases neither supplied with anything promised, nor with refunds requested; misuse of donations for various purposes given to her, including the “libel case” crowdfunder (supposedly to be used for an action against Conservative Party MP Lee Anderson and/or political commentator Martin Daubney).
If (and she does still have, in extremis, 5 months or so left in which to bring a claim) there is no claim brought against Lee Anderson, and if the monies raised for the legal costs are not (as I read was promised) in that event given to charity, the “Bootstrap Cook” might find herself in real trouble. A black woman in Bristol is awaiting possible Crown Court trial on allegations that she, said black woman, crowdfunded for a legal action or actions but then just kept those monies for her own use.
I notice that, after only 3 comments from readers, the Daily Mail closed down further comment.
I have to say that, as far as I am concerned, those who donate to the woman thinking that they, the donors, are somehow engaging in activism against the present government and/or “poverty” generally, have a screw or two loose somewhere. All that they are doing is supporting the lifestyle of someone who firstly is really not “poor”, not by any realistic standard, but who also has a father —living in the same town— who apparently owns quite a number of buy-to-let properties. Presumably, the “Bootstrap Cook” has very considerable inheritance expectations somewhere down the line.
Still, as said previously, the behaviour of many people is often almost unfathomable.

I would not go quite as far as that, in that I am unsure as to whether “Jack Monroe” had fraudulent intent right from the start. I concede, though, that her evident lack of interest in paying back monies taken (or even engaging with former donors) does give a rather poor impression, at the very least.

I agree with her on those particular points (but not on many others), though I struggle to accept that a self-describing “journalist” seems to be only semi-literate.

As I predicted, Russia will now run an “oblique war” strategy, just as the Americans have done in the past in some parts of the world. In between the first Gulf War and the second, the actual invasion of Iraq, the Americans, via both sanctions and other measures, followed by missile attacks, did what one analyst called “breaking every bone in Iraq’s body without killing it“. Either this incident was accidental, or the explosions are a false flag by the Zelensky regime, created to drag NATO into war with Russia. Either way, it was plainly not a deliberate attack on Poland, and thus should not trigger Article 5 of the NATO treaty.
In any case, now that states such as Poland, the Baltic states etc belong to NATO (which should never have happened), Article 5 should be abrogated. It is now nothing less than a dangerous trigger mechanism which may put all of Europe (and quite possible both the USA and Russia as well) to sword and flame.
This situation has been caused, at root, by the reckless NATO support for the Kiev regime. This is not our fight, and never has been.
