What I see there is that 44% of people polled support an end to grants of indefinite leave to remain, and 13% are unsure, so might also support that. 57% in all. This seems to me like overkill, really. After all, terrible as the crash was, killing 16 people, it was 2 days ago, no-one is still trapped or requiring rescue, plenty of major news is happening elsewhere and, in the end, this did not even happen in the UK. A straightforward crash incident, which happened in seconds, or a few minutes, which was a one-off incident, and the causes of which will no doubt be investigated (very likely a cable problem, possibly metal fatigue, and insufficient maintenance). Yet the BBC and Sky News still have reporters on the scene. Why? Enough.
Whatever the exact rights and wrongs of Angela Rayner’s (latest) property purchase, the background to the matter was the “fill your boots” mentality with which this Labour Friends of Israel misgovernment is suffused.
It became known a year ago that Angela Rayner had accepted gifts of clothes, I think also cash donations, and free trips to noisy vulgar clubs in Ibiza, the appalling nightclub, drink, and drugs island. Not that she was alone in accepting “freebies”. Her boss, Starmer-stein, had accepted clothes for himself and his Jewish wife, and even free eye-glasses!
Angela Rayner also postponed, on rather spurious grounds, some of the previously-scheduled 2025 UK local elections, which postponements—whatever the reasons for postponement— looked bad at a time when Labour was already losing ground greatly to Reform UK.
The postponed local elections will now not take place until May 2026. Both Labour and Conservative parties must be dreading them.
That whole “fill your boots” or “make hay while the sun is shining” mentality, which pervades Starmer’s Labour Friends of Israel cabal, was also a major factor putting paid to the Conservative Party’s electoral chances in 2024, after years of crony-corruption under (mainly) “Boris”-idiot, Liz Truss (briefly, in her 49 days as PM), and the little Indian money-juggler, Sunak.
So what now for Angela Rayner? She had been puffed as the successor to Starmer. Perhaps, though that seems far less likely now, bearing in mind the public perception of her. Some may think her a greedy, moneygrasping, “typical MP”; others say “it was not her fault, because she failed to take obvious steps to avoid the situation which arose“. Well, so not dishonest, simply careless and/or clueless? Not a very good impression either way.
In any case, Labour is now facing a really major challenge from Reform UK, which is really just the public’s proxy method for “getting rid of both Lab and Con“. The idea that Angela Rayner might be the next Prime Minister always seemed to me unlikely to happen, and now seems a very remote possibility indeed.
As to Rayner herself, the resignation will hit her rather hard financially. Loss of her Government position means that her salary is halved, she now being left with “only” the (just under) £94,000 p.a. MP salary (and attendant expenses). She now also loses whatever access she may have had to the country houses used on weekends by Government ministers. There are smaller hits as well, such as loss of the government cars and drivers that ferry ministers around.
Wider political fallout? Well, just another hit that Starmer could have done without. The Reform annual conference is taking place now, and Angela Rayner may be good ammunition for Farage. Also, the news will mute any criticism of Reform people for whatever they may say during the conference.
In any case, people are intending to vote Reform to stamp on Lab and Con, so anything negative in the msm about Farage and Reform will not, I think, have much effect, because people already know that Farage and especially his cohorts are not the best and brightest. That makes little difference to how people are intending to vote.

In the years 2002-2008, when I was a barrister based in Exeter and (2002-2006) living on the Cornwall/Devon border, prime shooting territory, several of my colleagues in chambers shot. I recall one incident when one member of chambers shot a pheasant which then fell on the head of either his wife or someone else’s wife (I think the latter), the lady in question being knocked out as a consequence.
I cannot now recall whether the shooter was or was not the person who later had an affair with the lady in question, who later left the one barrister for the other (causing a big kefuffle in chambers, as might be imagined; however, this being England and not Texas or the Caucasus, no-one opened fire on anyone else, and no blood was spilt).
Awkward, and I quite liked all three members of chambers involved (one involved simply as another gun on the fateful day; the lady involved was not a barrister, though I think that I did meet her once).
In fact, as someone who does not interfere with other people if it can be avoided, and because in those years I spent half my time at my then home in Finistere, or elsewhere, I was apparently the only member of Chambers for some time unaware of the personal upset that had occurred (though I had heard about the earlier, pheasant-caused, injury).

At 36 (37 next week), Claire Hazelgrove may be young-ish, but not, as far as I can see, very idealistic, and she obviously aspires to get as much money for herself as she can, though she has pledged not to take outside work (if offered, which is unlikely).
As to her “career” to date, nothing appears. Born in 1988, she read politics at the University of York, did a post-grad year at Bath, after which she seems to have done not very much. Her academic time must have ended in or about 2013. Then there appears to be a gap for about a decade until the General Election of 2024.

In such a hot season as we now have in southern England, there is always, and now is, a plague of some kind of flying ants. In some countries, at some times, it would have been shot on sight.
I have only ever met one person who has been to Vorkuta, and his was an involuntary visit that lasted for many years; a Pole sent there as a young man, I think in or about 1940, along with many others. I believe that he somehow survived a decade there, and was eventually repatriated to his family in Bielsko-Biala, south-west Poland. Maybe about 65 when I met him and his family in 1988, he was a bit of a tough guy, and he must indeed have been tough, in more youthful days, to survive for 10 years as a prisoner and slave-labourer in Vorkuta.
Looking at that film (above), I am again struck by the harshness and brutality that humans can inflict on each other, but also by the incredible resilience and ability to create that humans have.
Vorkuta, like other cities in inhospitable areas and harsh climates (Magadan, Norilsk etc) which were wholly a product of the Stalinist period of the Soviet system (Vorkuta did not exist even as a hamlet until the 1930s), had at one time (1960s, 1970s, 1980s) a real city life, with a railway station, buses, an airport, a city theatre, hospitals, cinemas, sports centres, even a symphony orchestra; also, some fairly impressive-looking official buildings.

Vorkuta had, at one time, 115,000 inhabitants. The real population is now thought to be well below 50,000, perhaps as low as 30,000.
My point is that civilization is not a simple continuum. Rudolf Steiner, Valentin Tomberg etc have described human evolution as a staggered spiral. There can be breaks in the spiral. Civilizations or cultures arise, but also decay and disappear. Amazing places can be created and built out of “nothing”, but those same places can fall to pieces and disappear even from memory and/or from recorded history.
The beautiful city of St. Petersburg was created from swamp and forest by the vision, in origo, of one man, Peter the Great, and still exists, now with millions of inhabitants (it is commonly said to be the 4th or even 3rd-largest city in Europe, depending on whether Istanbul is accepted as European). On the other hand, famous Sparta left almost nothing behind it but memories become history. Troy was, for many centuries until its site was rediscovered in the 19thC, thought to be not even legendary but mythical. New York City was created from “nothing”, from the 17thC onward, and still exists, yet the huge cities which once existed in Mexico and Central America and elsewhere have either disappeared or been supplanted (as at Mexico City) by very different successors.
Vorkuta was built on brutality and suffering, but then so was Petersburg…
The world, particularly Europe but also the Middle East, North America, Russia, stands in peril from massive and probably nuclear war. The cities of the West and Centre of Europe also stand in peril from internal strife caused mainly by migration invasion by backward hordes from other parts of the world. Our present overall culture and civilization may not survive the 21st Century, not in their current forms.
We should all be thinking about these matters and about how to salvage as much as possible of our present advanced culture and civilization, should that become necessary.

The so-called “Director of Investigations and Enforcement” of the “CAA”, one “Slitherman” (as I call it), has personally made false and unlawful allegations against me in the past. Lewis has been involved in trying to “get me” numerous times over the past 13 years, but I am still here, the blog is still being published, while Lewis has suffered quite a few blows of fate in the same period, and I think is now looking down the barrel of bad news.
