Another, but far more junior officer, Lieutenant William Douglas-Home (whose elder brother later became a Conservative Party prime minister), was also at Le Havre at the material time:

Lieutenant (acting Captain) Douglas-Home was near Le Havre, awaiting the completion of the aerial bombardment. He was to serve as a liaison officer in Operation Astonia, the Allied attack on Le Havre. On the second day after the aerial bombardment had started, he learned of the German request to evacuate the civilians and the Allied refusal. The consequences of the bombardment were apparent to the waiting Allied forces and Douglas-Home refused to participate in the attack. He gave two reasons:[citation needed]

The aerial bombardment of Le Havre lasted four nights, killed over 2,000 French civilians, 19 German soldiers and levelled the city. The Germans surrendered after two-days’ fighting and I Corps moved on to Boulogne, which was also subjected to a heavy aerial bombardment. At that time Douglas-Home, who had been placed under supervision (he did not consider himself at that time to have been “arrested”) wrote to the Maidenhead Advertiser and the publication of his letter in the newspaper prompted his formal arrest and detention.
Because of the article in the Maidenhead Advertiser, the Allied forces besieging Calais allowed the civilians to be evacuated from the town before it was subjected to a heavy aerial bombardment and final assault. Dunkirk was allowed to remain in German hands, with the besieged force bottled up, until Germany surrendered on 8 May 1945. In the wake of the publication, the British became sensitive to indiscriminate bombing of occupied cities and towns, although that consideration was not extended to towns and cities in Germany.
Captain Andrew Wilson, M.C. also served in 141 RAC. In his autobiography Flame Thrower, published in 1956, he recounts this incident and its consequences. Wilson wrote his story deliberately in the third person:
Even when he sailed with the regiment to Normandy, William had continued his private war-against-war. While headquarters were near Bayeux, he had written to the newspapers about some German ambulances shot up by British fighters. And what he had written was true. Wilson had seen the ambulances, riddled with bullets on the Tilly road.”

Very different from when I was not far from there several times in 1993 (in Leninsky Prospekt, at the Academy of Sciences). On my second and shorter trip to Moscow, in 2007, I was in another area of the city.

As for the ridiculously high pay (£3,000 for one shift), in 2006 or 2007 I was briefed to represent a crap Dutch locum hospital doctor (and not a “consultant”) at Cambridge County Court. I recall a prison escape by bank robbers in the 1970s, in Leicestershire. When recaptured, one of the robbers was seen to have had the s**t kicked out of him, his face black and blue. Kenny Sharp, mitigating, said: “Maximum credit for an early guilty plea. This is a person who is struggling to come to terms with the reality of what she did. Immediate custody would have a significant impact on her two children.“
The defendant was handed a 12-month custodial sentence suspended for two years. She must also complete 12 Rehabilitation Activity Requirement days and 200 hours of unpaid work.“

Reminiscences:temps perdu, and thoughts about mortality
When one is well over 60, as I now am (68; b. 1956), thoughts may naturally turn to mortality, life and death, and questions larger than the everyday concerns of life. That may be so when one notices that many people one has known in life are now defunct.
Some of the people I have known, or have merely met briefly or peripherally in the past, are still alive; many, however, are not. Some of those who are no longer alive have died from various natural causes (and are too numerous to list), others expired from unnatural causes (such as a Nigerian princess I knew, shot dead in Lagos in the late 1990s) or from causes or reasons unknown (such as the ex-husband of a lady I knew in the 1980s, which ex-husband apparently drowned in the Thames at London). A few, friends of friends rather than people I knew well, sadly died via suicide many years ago.
These thoughts came again to mind yesterday when I noticed information online to the effect that a former American colleague, a major-league American lawyer called Tim Scrantom, died some time ago, in 2021, apparently of a brain tumour. He was diagnosed in April 2021, and died 6 months later.

Tim Scrantom was a couple of months younger than me, a fact which sharpens my reminiscence.
I met Scrantom after a headhunter in New York suggested to him and his two main colleagues, in 2001, that I might suit his niche law firm (based in Charleston, South Carolina). I was telephoned in Turkey, where I was then resident, and we arranged to meet in London at one of my usual haunts, the Churchill Bar at the Hotel Russell in Russell Square.
I drove back to England via Greece, Bulgaria, Romania (the latter two then not EU states, and very ramshackle), Hungary (excellent country), Austria, Germany (calling in at Berchtesgaden), Luxembourg, and Belgium.
The upshot was that Scrantom and I became colleagues, he based mostly at Charleston (the office was at East Bay Street, in the conservation zone of the city), I mostly in London, though we both visited various offshore jurisdictions, once or twice in tandem, as when we went to Liechtenstein one day (well, I did; Scrantom had left his passport at the Mayfair Hotel, and only discovered that fact when we met at Heathrow, prior to flying to Zurich…).
Scrantom was a genial host. He invited my wife and me to dinner in Charleston in August or early September 2001 and, on a later solo visit, I visited his home on Sullivan’s Island, by Charleston, where he lived with his then wife (I believe they divorced later) and young daughter.
Scrantom, though a graduate from American law schools, an attorney in several states, and a professor of law as well, was also a barrister of Gray’s Inn in London. I was a barrister of Lincoln’s Inn, though many years later (2016) wrongfully and unlawfully disbarred at the instigation of a pack of malicious and politically-motivated Jew-Zionists.
Scrantom, incidentally, was a modest fellow, very much a “Southern gentleman”, born in Georgia and from a wealthy background. I liked him. I never knew (until yesterday) about some of his earlier adventures, such as sailing around the Bahamas on his yacht, exploring the Himalayas, or visiting edgy places in Cambodia and elsewhere in South-East Asia, though he did tell me that he knew several of the people portrayed in the famous book and film Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Midnight_in_the_Garden_of_Good_and_Evil_(film)], the events of which occurred in Savannah, Georgia, where Scrantom’s family members were largely based.
In September 2001, I was with Scrantom in a taxi in the Strand, London, when his wife called to say that New York was under attack. We interrupted our journey (to the Berkeley Square area of Mayfair) to get out at a Dixons store to look at the TV screens.
I well remember him later fuming that Iraq “must have” been behind the attack on the World Trade Center (that was the neo-con and American msm line at the time, of course) and that “Israel has the right idea” (i.e. bomb the hell out…). Well, he was wrong, of course, and we disagreed about that. Like most Americans, and despite his intelligence and education, he was influenced by the pro-Israel propaganda so pervasive in the msm in the USA (though his main colleague, Ron, a hard-driving former USAF officer, was more alive to the menace of Jew-Zionism, and he was, as one might expect, also pro-USA to the hilt).
I do not much like the concept (and Jew-Zionists in England use “litigation insurance” to pursue pro-Israel “lawfare”), so maybe it is just as well that our professional connection was mainly severed in 2002, when I decided to return to the ordinary practising Bar in England. I then moved to a large country house in Cornwall, and was based professionally at Exeter.
As already mentioned, I liked Tim (though not his then wife, to be frank; I only met her once), though I should say that he and his two main colleagues had no idea at all about how to run a law firm.
Life is short, something few if any really understand when in their twenties or thirties. We all have to try to accomplish something, not in a careerist sense, but for the future of the Earth, while in any particular incarnation.

When I was in Rhodesia in 1977, the roads outside the capital, Salisbury (now Harare) were empty, but that was not because of sanctions (fuel rationing only lasted 1965-1971). New cars were often seen in the city, though none were of British manufacture; French, I think Spanish, or other. Sanctions had limited effect— things such as books, Scotch whisky etc. Nothing really major. Tobacco, oranges, chrome etc were still exported (often under false flags).

Ah. Interesting. Looks as though the numbers of alleged victims have been edited down. I thought that the Jews/Israelis were still claiming that about 1,000, or even 1,500, had been killed. Seems that (as happened at the “reconstructed” site of the early 1940s Auschwitz camp, where a “4 million victims” sign was officially altered to about a quarter of that figure), the 1,500 supposedly killed by Palestinian Arabs in southern Israel in 2023 is now 378, at least at the festival itself. The other hundreds of victims, if they existed at all, were presumably killed by the brutal Israeli armed forces themselves as “collateral damage”.
None of that, though, explains how the Israeli Jews (and those supporting them in the UK and elsewhere) think that the deaths of 378 Jews etc by a particular paramilitary/political group somehow justifies the killing by Israeli Jewish forces of anything up to 200,000 Palestinian Arabs, mostly civilian, mostly women and children (about half of the victims being under 18 years of age). As regular readers of the blog will know, the malicious “CAA” troublemakers, liars, and perjurers (who are disowned even by most Jews, even by most Jew-Zionists, in this country), and (connected by supporters and /or members, though not formally) “UK Lawyers for Israel” [“UKLFI”], have been gunning for me over the past 11-14 years: see
The right of individuals and organizations to bring private prosecutions, once, in practice, mainly the preserve of bodies such as the RSPCA and RSPB, is now being abused, mainly by tendentious political organizations such as the fake charity, the “CAA”.
The “CAA” is basically a volunteer arm of the Israeli Embassy in London. It has been, for about a decade, conducting both harassment and “lawfare” against individuals and bodies it considers anti-Israel and/or “antisemitic”.
So far, apart from me —not privately-prosecuted, the “CAA” having somehow suborned police and Crown Prosecution Service [“CPS”] personnel in order to have me prosecuted by direct police/CPS action (see blog posts above)— the CAA has harassed such as the famous David Icke, the (half-Jewish) jazz musician Gilad Atzmon, former footballer and TV pundit Gary Lineker, Al Jazeera TV, the BBC and its reporters, and many others, and has in the past privately prosecuted the satirical singer, Alison Chabloz, whose case was then taken over officially by the CPS.
Private prosecutions can be taken over by the CPS either on its own initiative or upon application by either the private prosecutors or the defendant(s). The CPS can then either stop the prosecution, or take it over and continue it officially.
The “CAA” seems to have had plenty of money donated to it, either by wealthy Jews in the UK, or from Israel. Indeed, their latest “lawfare” abuse follows on from their long-running attempt to recruit a competent lawyer as “General Counsel” (they love important titles— “Slitherman” is called “Director of Investigations and Enforcement”…):

The “CAA” usually tries (as in my own free speech trial) to use/abuse the notorious “bad law” of Communications Act 2003, s.127, which was recommended for repeal by the Law Commission, but which (so far) remains on the statute book mainly because Jew-Zionist organizations (principally the “CAA”) made representations, via “friendly” MPs and corrupt members of the House of Lords, to the effect that the provision should not be repealed (during the quite recent passage of the Online Harms Act).
This type of “lawfare” should be prohibited. It is a flagrant abuse of the English legal system.
Incidentally, the “two Israelis” mentioned in the report of the Daily Mail are the two dishonest Jew-Zionist fanatics mentioned in the blog posts above, in fact, that is “Mark Lewis Lawyer” and Mandy Blumenthal (his wife/carer), acting together with Daily Mail scribbler Sabrina Miller to create a contrived “incident”.
It is pretty clear why the abusive and malicious “CAA” cabal is now trying once more to bring private prosecutions. The police and CPS are now, more than heretofore, aware of the CAA’s “lawfare” abuse, and are less and less willing to take the contrived “CAA” complaints at face value. Ergo, with the CPS and even the fairly clueless police unwilling to be used as “CAA” puppets, the “CAA” has had to shift for itself.
Successful defendants to private prosecutions have the right to ask for the costs of their defence, which may be, in some cases, very substantial, by the way.
That made me laugh. Liz Truss is ancient history, politically (in the real Britain outside John Rentoul’s Westminster Bubble). I doubt that many voters care about any similarity between Farage’s economic views and those of already-near-forgotten Liz Truss.
As for whether the (non-existent) “books” or statistics “add up”, the people have had so much of all that nonsense wash over them for 15-20 years that it makes little or no impact.

Since the general election, Farage's support among Tory voters has rocketed from 25% to 33%.
Among Brexit voters has nearly doubled to 54%.
Among the working-class has surged from 20% to nearly 40%.
It is not a pro-Farage vote, or even pro-Reform vote, as such, but neither is it a “protest vote”. It is a seriously-angry vote against the System parties, their smug freeloading politicians, and about everything now going very very wrong in this country, and against the key cause (of several connected causes)— mass immigration, the trashing of a white European country, and turning that country into a black/brown/Chinese/God-knows-what dystopian mess.

…or, indeed, my own “case” (see this blog, above). Toby Young, the “Free Speech Union”, Matt Goodwin, Katie Hopkins etc, all the “controlled opposition” dissidents, are effectively in the pocket of (((the usual suspects))). Not 100% accurate. I was not imprisoned after my free speech trial ended in conviction in November 2023 (sentence passed in March 2024). I was not even given a suspended sentence. I was given a financial penalty (fine and costs) amounting to about £740, and a “community order” of 15 “rehabilitation days” over 9 months, which in the end was finished (effectively though not officially) after about 5 months, and which basically consisted in my having about 6 or 7 chats (from 20 minutes to over 2 hours in duration, mostly about 30 minutes or so) with a rather charming and polite young lady from the Probation Service.
