Secondly, there are more important issues around. The migration-invasion. The destruction of our society in many different ways (the fake “celebrity” culture being but one of those). I just checked the Patreon website for the first time in quite a few days: “Jack Monroe” still has no less than 366 utter mugs each sending her between £3.50 and £44 per month.
“Jack Monroe” may have crashed and burned as a minor “celebrity”, and I doubt whether she will be writing any more recipe books after the disaster of the last one, and her appearances on Question Time etc are (one hopes) at an end, but all the same, if the aforesaid mugs keep paying her a total of, probably, a few thousand pounds per month, she can scarcely complain.
When I was about 10 or 11, and living in Sydney (Australia), I sometimes thought how nice it would be if every person in the country were to give me 1 cent. The population of Australia was then 12 million, so my idea would be worth about AUS $120,000. Why I even thought that, I have no idea.
The amount I mention might seem to have been modest, but houses in the best areas of Sydney, such as where I lived, were only about $30,000 or so in those days.
Incidentally, the Australian population is now about 27 million, more than twice the size it was in the late 1960s, the result of mass immigration from all over the world (rather than only from the UK and mainland Europe), which started in the late 1970s.

…I can sniff the wind as well as anyone, and when the mighty US magazine Foreign Affairs publishes a major article with the title Will The West Abandon Ukraine? (to which the answer, in my view, is ‘quite possibly’) I think something is going on.
I’ve never been able to grasp what Britain’s interest is in sustaining a costly and risky war in South-East Europe between two corrupt and ill-governed hunks of the old Soviet Empire. A lot of US Republicans, not just the ghastly Trump, are also doubtful about the point of it.
Then there are recent reports of growing friction between Ukraine and Poland‘s government. I’m surprised this has not happened before, given the fairly recent (80 years ago) violent history between the two neighbouring peoples, in an area where events 500 years ago can still stir up bitter enmities.
And there is the current scandal of alleged corruption in Ukrainian military recruiting offices. This is no shock to anyone, as you can barely breathe in Ukraine without encountering corruption. But the point is that it suggests people in quite large numbers are paying to avoid fighting.
At the same time a lot of men of military age, banned by law from leaving Ukraine at the moment, are being caught trying to slip across the frontier with Romania. Which suggests that quite a few are getting through, and that this is a major difficulty for a country which has suffered terrible military casualties.
Honestly, if this war had not been so widely portrayed in crude storybook terms as a super-simple fight between total good and total evil, which it isn’t, we might have reached this stage before. But better late than never.“

I recall a discussion with some late middle-aged Poles in the snowy Polish winter of 1988; a week or two before Christmas. All three (a husband and wife, and the brother of that woman) had lived through the tumultuous events of the mid-20th Century in that part of the world. Worth listening to, though for me it is clear that the Earth is reaching, perhaps has already reached “peak population” (especially as far as the non-European —i.e. non-white— populations are concerned).
One sees much discussion online as to what is “Marxism” or “Communism” (or “Socialism”), and as to whether the new emerging totalitarianism in the West is “Marxist” or not. Many (of varying viewpoints) question the equivalence, looking at what is aimed at, and what are the policies espoused.
In fact, much of that debate is too theoretical. When you look at things from a practical perspective, the similarities are far more apparent. Look at a few of those.
In the Soviet social system, an extension of the ideals of the French Revolution was preached: liberty, equality, fraternity. Needless to say, those ideals were more honoured in the breach than in the observance. Even before Stalin took full power, a whole system of special rations, special pay, special healthcare and (in reality) education began to be implemented for the favoured parts of the population, especially the Nomenklatura.
Those favoured lived very different lives compared to the rest, all delineated by reference to rank and favour. Spacious apartments instead of shared and/or cramped houses and flats, healthcare in special hospitals (the best being the so-called “Kremlin Clinic” in outer Moscow) rather than standard Soviet hospitals, and a graduated set of special food outlets (usually not even open to the general public), in which could be bought items rarely or never generally available (caviar, smoked salmon, imported foods, imported kitchen equipment), and so on.
At the higher levels, the nomenklatura travelled “soft class” rather than hard, could get internal air tickets when they were hard to get for the base population, and had cars for local and regional transport (even in the 1980s, a black person in South Africa had a greater chance of buying a car than a Soviet citizen).
At the very highest levels, this “class division” of travel reached staggering inequality. The top brass would travel by “private” rail car or aircraft. When Sakharov was told to relocate in order to help with the Soviet atom bomb and hydrogen bomb projects, he travelled in a rail car which had a bedroom for himself and his wife, a sitting room, a dining room, accommodation for guards and other staff, a staffed kitchen, and an observation deck. This railcar was tacked onto an ordinary train.
The disparity even extended to communications, the nomenklatura above a certain level communicating among themselves by means of a special system of reliable and secure telephones. This was the vertushka, or vertushki (there were several levels of service, all self-standing: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vertushka).
Now look at the rulers and beneficiaries of the Western system today. The lifestyle disparity between the favoured few and the rest came out all the more strongly during the “Covid” “scamdemic”/”panicdemic”.
At meetings of the G7 or G20 heads of government in 2020-2022, the top attendees went around unmasked, shaking hands, kissing the ladies who were governmental leaders or their wives. Meanwhile, right next to them, were the waiters, waitresses, bodyguards etc, all masked! Almost an insult, really, a finger put up to the sheep watching on TV or reading the newspapers.
Indeed, the same is true in terms of travel. Ordinary people were banned from travel, or allowed to travel only on sufferance and after complying with Kafka-esque conditions, but the wealthy few and the governmental leaders continued buzzing around on private jets, and in reality subject to few restrictions.
We see the hypocrisy even now. The Harry Formerly Known as Prince, with Meghan Mulatta, making several transcontinental journeys per month using large private jets, often in order to speak about how the travel of the bulk of the population must be restricted or banned.
Not just Harry and the Mulatta; look at, say, Bill Gates, Emma Thompson and the rest. All travelling on hugely polluting private jets, helicopters, superyachts etc and at the same time lecturing the rest of the population about how they must accept ever-declining living standards…
In fact, that wealthy and ultra-wealthy stratum already live lives very different from the main population. In the UK, for example. Private jets for overseas travel. Helicopters for intra-UK or short-distance European travel. If cars need be used, that would usually be for short-ish distances, and the vehicles will be those that insulate the occupants from the outside. Range-Rovers, Rolls-Royce etc.
Needless to say, the wealthy rarely if ever require the NHS. Private healthcare only. As for security, the police are only needed as a backup for those in staffed country houses or London penthouses etc. Private security, maybe even bodyguards.
One could continue, but you see the point. This is a matter of the exercise of power, as well as that of privilege. The discussion “socialism” v. “capitalism” is largely sterile.
Everywhere you look now, you see the masks coming off: “15-minute cities”, 20 mph speedlimits, ULEZ, “social credit” ideas, the banning of most cars (in the medium-term and even short-term), the threat of further faked biosecurity “health” measures such as the facemask nonsense, “lockdowns” etc like a Sword of Damocles waiting to fall.
Add to that the black-brown migration-invasion and the obvious implementation across Europe of the Coudenhove-Kalergi Plan.
The black-brown hordes coming to Europe and including the UK are almost all coming from relatively poor living conditions in their home countries. For them, it does not matter that the NHS is failing, that the roads are falling to pieces, that pay and State benefits are low, that the police forces scarcely work, that the justice system is disintegrating etc. Why? Because all that is still far better than where they come from.
I am glad to see that a large part of the British population is at least becoming aware of the outline of what is happening.

Happened to listen to BBC Radio 4 Today Programme for a few minutes in the car. A correspondent was talking about the drone attacks on Moscow, and saying that prior to the Russian invasion, there had been no attacks, and so these attacks were happening only because of the Russian invasion.
Superficially true, in that Russia proper was never attacked before the invasion of early 2022, but what was not mentioned was the 8 years of artillery bombardment (and bombing) of the Russian-speaking and/or pro-Russian areas of formerly-Ukraine territory, particularly Donetsk, starting in 2014.
I waited to hear who was giving what was basically a lying-by-omission account of things. Turned out that it was “Steve Rosenberg, Russia Editor“. [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Rosenberg]. What a surprise. Or not.
I visited Poland several times in the late 1980s, spending maybe 2 months or so there altogether. I also once spent a few days travelling by car from Poland to West Germany, so I saw small parts of the southern regions of the DDR (East Germany) at that time (summer 1988). I have blogged about it previously. A strange-seeming society, very very different from the Bundesrepublik (West Germany).
The DDR was a very controlled group-dictatorship: rule by the few (Communists), of course, and in most respects the DDR was very inferior to the Bundesrepublik, but the situation was not entirely black and white. Few things are.

What always amazes me, leaving aside the moral or ethical rights and wrongs, is how many people feel the need to confess crimes, even serious crimes, to girlfriends or stray people. I can think of several famous or infamous cases, including several high-profile murder cases, where that was the case.
One was that of a pair of brothers who killed their (possibly —though never proven— abusive) millionaire adoptive (I think) parents on Jersey decades ago; one brother, the actual killer, confessed while “in his cups” to a girlfriend he met in Porto Alegre, southern Brazil and while on his yacht there. She testified against him at his trial, the primary witness evidence of importance.
Incidentally, Bamber had been another adopted child.
While understanding the need of some people for “absolution” after confession (as, in effect, in Dostoyevsky’s Crime and Punishment), I do think that such a need shows weakness.
Some people are just better than others at keeping a secret, I suppose.

I have very little interest in football or other organized mass spectator sports. I have, however, had a few oblique thoughts about the women’s football situation, and the so-called “lionesses” (England women’s football squad).

The NHS principle of “free at point of use” is one that I support, but it is clear that the NHS has gone astray in many areas, particularly the whole administrative area.
Even today, you hear people claim that only the UK has proper free health care. In fact, many other countries do healthcare better, not least France, where hospital wards (as distinct from one or two-person rooms) are now almost unknown, and where care is often far better as well.
I knew an late middle-age/elderly couple in Brittany (when I lived there for several years). They both had serious health problems. The husband of that couple said that, on telling the equivalent of an NHS consultant what medications he had been on in the UK, the doctor had nodded and replied, “I think that we can do a little better than that“… Does that not speak volumes?
I might add that the couple in question, who lived quite near me in Finistere-Nord, about an hour’s drive, 43 miles or 69 km, from Brest (where the hospital was), used to be ferried by taxi (paid for by the health service) to and from that hospital. Imagine that on the NHS…
There has to be partly a step back (eg reinstating the Matron position in hospitals), and partly a step or two forward (in listening to patients and putting patients first), in the NHS.
At present, the NHS, like the police, the court system, the school system, the university system, the BBC, the Foreign Office (etc), and various other parts of UK society, is just not fulfilling its proper function much of the time.

Seems like a fair question to ask:
If reducing emissions is really the goal, justifying huge daily fines on older non-compliant cars, then why are we introducing a speed limit that increases emissions and logjams?
That is because (like ULEZ), the programme to get everyone driving at 20 mph is only superficially about fuel emissions. The real or hidden agenda is the “electric cars only” agenda.
What is the real agenda? First, stop the most polluting cars being allowed to drive, then stop all diesel/petrol cars, then only allow certain types of electric vehicle on the roads (at first in London and other large cities, then nationwide, and even in remote countryside).
Result? Most people unable to afford to buy cars or to drive at all. They will then have to travel on monitored and controlled public transport (facilitated by under-skin microchips, in the end), or stay corralled in “15-minute-cities” etc, which will develop into (again) highly monitored and controlled zones almost like open prisons, or somewhere between normal neighbourhoods and the latter.
Convenience and social pressure will tend to “nudge” acceptance of “the rules”. Many may find the new social order not too bad— lower crime, no commute, easy shopping etc. Those who do not easily accept the bridle may be sanctioned in various ways via what may develop into a Chinese-style “social credit” system of control.
The most staunch of dissidents will then be removed, and will no doubt suffer the penalties usually visited upon such people by totalitarian states.

Strange dream
Like Churchill, I have the habit of having an afternoon nap when possible. Today that came with an odd dream. I was running some political organization, and there was not only some (unidentified) journalist there, but also Nigel Farage.
Upstaging the journalist, Farage had made a grandiloquent offer, that is that he would pay me a million pounds to interview me for some TV show or podcast.
The interview was to take place at an ordinary table on the (maybe) third floor of a building. Just a dull, carpeted space, with a few people (including that journalist) around. Someone else was accompanying Farage.
Farage was about to start when, not quite trusting him, I remarked (in the dream, “urbanely”…) that I was sure that, as a man of business, he would not mind if I asked for the cheque upfront. He started to expostulate evasively. I asked what value of cheque he was willing to give. The answer, after some “umming and arring”, was…£22!
I became angry, dragging Farage from his seat and across the grey-carpeted floor to the window, with him struggling and trying to escape.
As I approached the windows, Farage in my grasp (though struggling to break free), I shouted at him that I had known that he could not be trusted, and that not only should he be chucked out of a window but that I was going to do it!

I saw an assessment by some British ex-officer that, were the Russian forces to use nuclear weapons (I presume he means tactical ones) in Ukraine, US and UK forces would respond, directly, by wiping out the Russian forces in Ukraine in 2-3 days! Really? What if Putin decided to raze all major Ukrainian cities, especially Kiev, to the ground, using larger, strategic, nuclear missiles? Would US/UK forces still enter Ukraine (presumably only by air power)?
What if the Russians were to take the “Devil’s alternative” and decided to destroy London and a few key airfields, strategic telecoms centres, and ports? At that point, there is no British Army, navy, or air force to speak of, the UK Government would no longer exist, there would be social chaos in Britain, and it would be all but irrelevant that Russian cities and military facilities would also be eliminated.
If the above were to happen, we would be in world war, “Dr. Strangelove” territory, and the USA would be involved both as target and as nuclear attacker.
This is becoming truly dangerous for avoidance of a real nuclear war, both in Europe and beyond. Are the British ruling circles, for example, really willing to risk a nuclear attack on the UK itself just because they want to deny victory to the Russian forces in eastern Ukraine?

The Razor’s Edge
I just wasted 2 hours watching the 1984 remake of the fine 1946 film, The Razor’s Edge, which was based on a novel by Somerset Maugham.
The remake expunged entirely the character of Somerset Maugham himself, who in the 1946 version was both the unseen narrator and also seen in several scenes throughout the film (Somerset Maugham was played by Herbert Marshall: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herbert_Marshall).
Several changes were made, I think not very successfully, in the 1984 version: the film starts at a kind of charity fete, rather than a country club by one of the Great Lakes. The main character, Larry Darrell (played by Bill Murray in the 1984 film, but —far better— by Tyrone Power in the 1946 one) is, in the 1984 version, a former ambulance orderly home from American involvement in WW1 (in the 1946 film, he is a former WW1 American pilot).
The 1984 film leaves out, entirely, the 1946 version’s final parts set on the Cote d’Azur, and resets those scenes in Paris.
The Himalayan scenes, where Larry Darrell seeks and finds enlightenment after consulting with an Indian holy man and “abbot” of an ashram, were much more powerful in the 1946 version; the 1984 film makes the ashram a Tibetan Buddhist monastery, and the scene in which Larry Darrell is enlightened on a mountain is just not at all convincing.
I have never read the novel, but I see now from Wikipedia that Darrell’s enlightenment in the book came after encounter with a Hindu spiritual master. The 1946 film leaves it vague as to the religion of the “abbot”, but the “abbey” is described as an ashram.
Even the drink which causes the character, Sophie, to fall back into alcohol abuse, is changed from Pertsovka (pepper-and-honey vodka, called —in the French way— “persovka”, in the film) to Zubrovka (bison-grass vodka). I can only assume that that that is because Zubrovka had become well-known, whereas few people in the USA had or have heard of Pertsovka.
Personally, I would give the 1946 version 8/10 as a film, but the 1984 version 2/10.
Incidentally, the 1984 film was both a critical and commercial flop, making back only half of its production budget, whereas the original 1946 version was nominated for four Academy Awards, and won one (Anne Baxter, playing Sophie); it also won two Golden Globes. The 1946 film was not a huge success commercially, but still made back 4-5 times its production cost.
Sometimes, remakes surpass earlier versions, but rarely. In this case, the 1946 version outdoes the 1984 remake in every way: storyline, acting, music, cinematography (despite the 38-year gap). The script in particular is very crisp in the 1946 film.

I used to eat there occasionally in the 1980s, along with two now-deceased people: Ig Avsey, lecturer in Russian and noted translator of Dostoyevsky, and Guy Churchill, retired academic and one-time SAS soldier (mainly in Malaya in the 1950s).
I think that I have blogged about the pair before: Ig a good friend and one-time teacher of mine (at the nearby language school, part of the University of Westminster, which I attended p/t in the 1980s), and Guy Churchill, a mixture of resigned though amused cynicism and English eccentricity.
Guy surprised me (and Ig, I think, with whom he was more friendly) by suddenly getting separated and/or divorced at (?) maybe 70 (he looked older), while Ig surprised me even more by later getting married, a second marriage, to a young Russian woman he had met at, I think, a bus stop in Riga. My wife and I attended the wedding reception in 2002, where the bride, 20-something, looked out of place among the guests, 40-something and older (many 50+ or 60+).
