Memory Lane
I happened to see that someone with whom I was slightly acquainted at school in the early 1970s died a couple of years ago. Not someone I really knew, or knew well, because he, Matthew Perry by name, was in the “B” or “C” stream of my year, whereas I was in the “A” stream.
In fact, I really only became acquainted with Perry —and he was never a friend as such; I never visited his home or went anywhere with him— because, if I remember aright, we were both in the Bridge Club. An amusing fellow, with several stories to tell, often about (horse-) racing or gambling generally. The sort of person one might, in an older person, call “clubbable”.
I noticed from the piece I saw (from the online mag of my old school —incidentally, I should never have recognized him from the appended photo, perhaps taken in an unwell later year) that, after his school years were over, he had done well in pharmaceuticals, but had also flown aid to Africa (Uganda, I think it said).
Quite a few people of the same or similar age to myself, and whom I knew as a small child, older child, or generally in youth, are now no longer on this Earth. In fact, the same goes for several people I knew in later life. A reminder that we have to do what we can, accomplish our mission (of whatever kind) while still here.

Here is one utterly repulsive example of the dehumanisation of Palestinians. Imagine this was a Israeli man whose family had been killed on 7th October. If the same thing had happened, it would have caused a national scandal and ruined Angela Rayner’s career long before any stamp duty row.

Nigerian woman Kemi Badenoch was declared the new Conservative Party leader on 2 November 2024. She is therefore immune from formal challenge until 3 November 2025. As of that date, Con Party MPs are entitled to put in letters of dissatisfaction to the Chairman of the 1922 Committee. A leadership election can be triggered by letters sent by 15% or more of Con Party MPs. That would be a mere 18 MPs at present.
My expectation is that Kemi Badenoch will face a leadership election process before the end of 2025. The first step after the election having been triggered would be a knockout ballot of MPs, in which all candidates (each having 10+ nominations) would take part; there would be a maximum of 12 candidates (because there are only 120 MPs).
Assuming that Kemi Badenoch does not step down, she would be one of those candidates, but it is quite likely that she would be eliminated early on, after her disastrous performance in the past 10 months. The Conservative Party is now as low as 15% in the polls, a level which, at a general election, might mean a cadre of as few as 20 —or even, possibly, 10— Con Party MPs in the post-GE Commons. If so, the Con Party would be only the 5th-largest party in the Commons (after Reform, Labour, LibDems, and the SNP), and might only be the 6th-largest.
Anyway, looks to me that it’s bye-bye Kemi quite soon, either way.

Incidentally, I think that many naive people think that Schindler’s List, adapted from the novel, Schindler’s Ark, is “history”, a factual account of events, whereas it is actually “faction”, i.e. mixed fact and fiction. You might compare it to the book and film, Day of the Jackal. In the latter, most of the main characters existed, as did most of the surrounding factual basis— the Algerian conflict, the OAS, General de Gaulle, the rebel leaders etc. The story, however, was a skilful blend of real events and made-up events and people.

“An animal-loving Dutch vigilante who attacked a man she saw beating a donkey in Egypt is now facing a lawsuit.
Astonishing footage shows expat Joke Van der Post punching the animal’s handler before chasing him with a whip as he tries to flee.
In the heartbreaking video – which has since gone viral – the donkey kicks out in agony as it is repeatedly lashed while tethered to a wall on the outskirts of Cairo.
Appalled by the horrific cruelty, the 47-year-old runs at the man before pinning him against a wall and striking him several times shouting, ‘You think you’re f****** normal.’
As the man tries to run away Ms Van der Post, who manages a veterinary practice called the Good Karma Sanctuary, grabs a whip from another donkey handler and chases him off into the distance.
The man filed a police complaint accusing Ms Van der Post of assault and claiming appearing in the viral video has caused him ‘psychological harm’, local media reports.”

Treatment of animals in Egypt is often very bad, and most of the people there are cowardly wastes of space.
It is interesting to note that not only do Europeans run all or almost all of the animal welfare hospitals etc in Egypt, but also most of the efforts devoted to helping the Egyptian children etc born with various handicaps. The locals (I was told when I was there for a few months in the 1990s) regard such accidents or incidents of birth as a curse from God, and so need not be addressed at all. I could tell of a number of instances when I saw that Egyptian coward/bully mentality. There are exceptions, and some of the Egyptians are better than that, but I think a small minority.

Well, that poll (with notional LibDem vote around 12%, and Greens on 10%) would result in a Commons with 198 Lab MPs, 187 Reform, and 156 Con (51 Libdems, 27 SNP, 4 Greens). The polls are variable at present, but all tell the same story— Reform UK either the most popular party or a close second. Bearing in mind that Reform voters are said to be more motivated to actually vote than Lab or Con voters (and that fewer Lab voters vote by post, Con and Reform voters tending —so far— to be older and, by reason of that, less healthy), the real picture could well be even better for Reform.
I see the reality as being that at least a plurality of voters are absolutely sick of what Britain is becoming, and are therefore clutching at the Reform straw even though, in many cases, underwhelmed by both Reform and Farage. The voters who support Reform want to hit out at, and perhaps bury, both Lab and Con.
This should make the Runcorn and Helsby by-election even more interesting. I think and have blogged that Reform will smash it, but I concede that there are a number of factors in play. The constituency has Runcorn town as main voter pool, but even that is over 90% white, so the George Galloway vehicle, Workers’ Party, will probably come in 4th or 5th.
Turnout may or may not be low; if it is, Reform will benefit, probably. I wonder how many former Labour voters will turn out to vote for a nominally “Labour” government that has cheated pensioners, is intent on cheating and bullying the sick, disabled and unemployed, and which is at the same time throwing money at “Ukraine” (the brutal Zionist dictatorship in Kiev) and foreign aid recipients. That report just typifies so much about how Britain now operates.
Someone’s bank account closed down for no good reason.
The inability of a huge and profitable company (in this case, Barclay’s Bank) to deal with a simple enquiry and matter.
The afraid-of-their-own-shadows Barclay’s employees, who obviously ticked some kind of box as an excuse for their own incompetence and the bank’s inability to operate in a customer-friendly way.
Or maybe, the bank drones were the kind of idiots who, during the 2020-2022 “Covid” scamdemic/panicdemic, reported people for not wearing a facemask muzzle etc.
Finally, the equally-boxticking behaviour of the police plods, who obviously did not really believe that the bank customer was “a threat“, looking at how they took two weeks after complaint was made to go to his house and arrest him (and then justified their unnecessary arrest by ticking another box and suspending his shotgun licence; thus they can now close the case with “appropriate action” having been, supposedly, taken…).
The fact that the police arrived and rang the doorbell, when they supposedly viewed the poor chap as “a threat” who had a shotgun as well as, in the Barclays/police fantasy, a bomb, says it all.
