Not an issue that affects me personally now, though it would do were I still living in the large country house of which I had a lease in the 2002-2004 period. That house had an oil central heating system so complicated that two engineers had to come from the Midlands, maybe Derby, to tell us how to set the controls on the control panel (in the cellars), a panel that looked like something out of an old sci-fi film, or Stingray.
The oil was delivered by road tanker once a month, and they pumped enough to fill the tanks, so the price varied depending on usage, i.e. on the season.
As to the cost (and bear in mind this was well over 20 years ago), one cold January I got a bill for oil, for the month, of not much less than £700. For today’s value, I suppose you would have to add on the cost of coal and logs for the open fires (another £100 at least), then more than double it. Make it £1,600. For one month. That did not even cover heating the whole house, just some bedrooms, drawing room. library, kitchen/morning room area, Victorian conservatory, and the inner hall. We closed off many sections, including the ballroom.
God knows what the actual cost today, and/or soon, might be.

I am not a professional psychologist or psychiatrist, but I wonder what such a scientific or medical specialist would make of a patient who persistently minimizes the suffering, physical pain, or trauma of others, particularly that caused directly by the said patient, while magnifying or even inventing any trauma, inconvenience or irritation —however slight— of his or her own?
On the large scale, that is what we often see in the reactions of the Jews and Israel. I also doubt that anything much, in terms of criminal sanction, will happen to Andrew Windsor. Seems that, in the UK as in USA etc, a relative has to be very close, really part of the household and/or a dependant, to have immunity.

I have blogged once or twice about the by-election. I see that Betfair now has the Greens odds-on, Reform about 5/2, and Labour well back on nearly 9/1.
I have found bookmakers’ odds a poor indication of the result of by-elections, but Labour already look like the big losers in this one. If I have to eat my words on the 27th (by-election is on 26th), so be it. I just cannot see either the Muslims (about 30% or so of the electorate of Gorton and Denton) or most English/British people (about 68% of the voters there) voting Labour now, despite Labour’s 50.8% at GE 2024. My own views about the likely result of the Gorton and Denton by-election have not changed from a day or two ago. Reform seem to be in pole position, and Labour very much on the back foot (every day more scandal), but the Green Party may also be getting not only their own former (2024) voters’ votes (about 13% in 2024) but also votes from both disenchanted English/British former Labour voters and from equally disenchanted Pakistani (etc) Muslim former Labour voters.
That triad of support for the Greens may add up to something formidable, though my money is, I think, still on Reform to win this. For Labour to win would take a minor miracle, the way things are, despite Labour’s 50.8% vote at GE 2024, and despite the history of the area.

Whatever the nuances, it is clear that the recent killing of a man by the members of an ICE squad in Minnesota was murder by any normal metric. Someone who killed several great empires: the German Reich, then (after 1945, when subject peoples were eventually allowed “independence” because the European nations were exhausted) the French, Belgian, Spanish, Portuguese etc, and…the British Empire as well.
Had Churchill not blagged his way into taking over as Prime Minister in 1940, an honourable armistice might have been, and almost certainly would have been, concluded between the British Empire and the German Reich.
Western and Central Europe would thus have been saved from the ravages of war, and Eastern Europe from at least some of the ravages of war. Stalinism would either have been defeated in the field, or contained east of the Urals. Eastern and parts of Central Europe would then not have fallen under the rule of the Soviet Union in the 1940s (which rule of course lasted until the late 1980s).
In such a scenario, there would have been no premature decolonization in Africa, Asia, and elsewhere. Massive damage to the environment and wildlife would have been largely averted.
That never happened, mainly because Churchill became Prime Minister of the UK. Almost everything else was consequential.
Disastrous.
We in the UK would also have avoided being gradually and largely taken over by the “you know who” special interest tribe. Oh, and would never have been invaded, whether by Windrush (etc) Caribbeans or by rubber boat migrant-invaders from every failed state in the world.
