I happened to drop by my local supermarket, a Waitrose outlet. I bought a few basic items (bread, coffee, water, tomato, banana, paw-paw etc) and then went to buy some Euromillions lottery tickets. The draw tomorrow has a high-value prize, £132M, so I decided to buy 20 tickets. The elderly woman cashier told me that the machine told her that she was “not allowed” to sell so many to one person! A mere 20 tickets (£50 worth)!
I told her that I had had as many or more in the past. Oh, no, this is a “new rule”, I was told. A supervisor was called. She commiserated with me but explained that the new National Lottery company (a Czech thing called Allwyn) had just brought in this rule to “protect” people. I presume she meant “problem” gamblers.
£50! I recall that, in the 1980s, some City of London barrow-boy trader whose name escapes me (Terry-something) gambled £500,000 each-way on his own horse running in the Grand National. Equivalent to at least £2M each-way, i.e. £4M altogether, in today’s money.
Incidentally, though that horse lost, coming in fourth, Terry-something’s bet did not lose, because an each-way bet in a race with so many runners covers the winning horse (win and place) and the three placed horses behind the winner. In other words, Terry-something lost his £500,000 win bet but won on his £500,000 place bet, which paid out either a quarter or a fifth of the odds. His horse was at a fairly high price, so Terry-something collected enough to go away with a profit of about a million.
Anyway, returning to Waitrose and the lottery tickets, I was “allowed” (!) to buy 10 Euromillions tickets. It always makes me laugh when I see the msm lauding SIS and indeed MI5. Yes. That is a very partial view. Fresh vegetables and fruits, when available, were unrationed. Some vegetables were abundant and actually had to be promoted by ads; potato, carrot etc. Fresh fish was unrationed (though in short supply), and bread was unrationed until after the war. Beer was unrationed, when available.
Naturally, the people who lived on country estates were best-placed to weather rationing. Game birds, and fish, were unrationed, and people living on a country estate would have ready access to eggs and other foodstuffs (and of course could grow fruits and vegetables in kitchen gardens or fields). Such people would also often have extensive wine cellars, so would have been able to drink French (and German!) wines bought before 1940.

I was just watching an episode, I think 5 years or so old, of The Chase. A question was asked re. which Prime Minister was “put into Room 101“, (the UK TV show) by Jeremy Clarkson. A choice of three, which the contestant answered, correctly, as having been David Cameron. The Chaser, “the Vixen”, Jenny Ryan, also answered correctly. However, presenter Bradley Walsh said, en passant, “I’d have gone Chamberlain”, and the “Vixen” said “I’m with you there“.
What they were really saying is that Chamberlain was rubbish because he tried to avert the disastrous war against the German Reich.

I have to say that, were I the ruler of Dubai, I should have created a far better city-state than that ugly pastiche of Miami Beach and Monaco. The same goes for the other UAE emirates, and Qatar.
The weird thing, of course, about Muslim statelets such as the UAE and Qatar is that, on the one hand, they have the very latest technology, the latest and most expensive cars etc, but at the same time an underlying way of life which is feudal, mediaeval and, indeed, almost in the dark ages: Islam, and legal systems based on Islam.
The other odd thing about those Gulf statelets is that 90% of the population of most if not all of them is foreign, all of which foreigners are there short-term, in a few cases medium-term, trying to make and save money before they head home (as they have to do— they have no right to remain…).
Mini-states that take themselves too seriously are always open to ridicule, of course. I have never been to Monaco, but recall seeing a two or three-part series about the Principality, which has 510 acres, about the size (somewhat smaller) than Hyde Park (350 acres) and Kensington Gardens (265 acres) combined, and much smaller than New York’s Central Park (843 acres). The excessive respect (servility, indeed) shown by everyone there to its ruling prince, Albert, was very funny.
Not that there seemed to be anything terrible about this American-sounding fellow (the son, of course, of the American film actress, Grace Kelly), but it just is rather funny to see quite a bit of pomp and circumstance going on in this tiny semi-enclave not much bigger than Hyde Park; a Ruritanian feeling.
Pretty amazing, if anywhere near accurate. About 422 Reform MPs, 51 Greens, 49 LibDems, 44 SNP, 34 Lab, 14 Cons [etc].
That would be a stunning result, giving Reform a huge Commons majority of nearly a hundred MPs.
If that came to pass, you could pretty much knock out the Conservative Party completely. It would never recover. Labour probably much the same, though less clearly so, because the Conservative bases have been eroding for a long time despite, maybe even because of, the 14 years of (incompetent) Con Party government. Labour is still well-embedded in the trade unions, public services, and the ethnic minority “communities”.
Looks as though many of the actual “socialists” or play-socialists, have abandoned Labour for the Greens, just as a certain number of former Con voters have abandoned the Cons for the LibDems, and others for Reform UK.
Incidentally, if my present feeling is right about the Con vote declining to as low as 10% by 2028/2029 (partly because many of the very old people who are the Con mainstay will not be living by then, and partly because many will go either Reform or LibDem), then the Conservative Party might be left with only 1 MP, Labour about 30, the SNP, Greens, and LibDems 30-40 each, and Reform as many as 459 MPs out of 650.

I have been interested to see that, during the last few days, the number of individual visitors has increased very markedly. Several hundred each day, from about 20 countries, but with the majority of both visitors and hits (some people look at more than one blog post) coming from the USA and, after the USA, the UK.
There have been a few times in the past when high hundreds, even over a thousand, visitors visited in a single day, but not very many, if truth be known. I’m easy (“one human soul is a big audience“).
Well, this week 5/10, thus beating political journalist John Rentoul, who scored 3/10. I knew the answers to questions 1, 4, 6, 7, and 10. I should have also got question 8, but did not, and question 2 has, in my view, at least three possible answers. Still, there it is.

The [Israeli] Jews have done that over a period of 2 years (supported by their “fifth column” in the UK and USA and elsewhere), and have killed or badly wounded —over 69,000 actually killed so far— about a quarter of a million Gazan Arab people, mostly civilians, mostly women and children. Why? Because Hamas operatives invaded Israeli territory (i.e. land stolen or seized from 1948) on one day in 2023, resulting in the deaths of (or injury to) between 500 and 1,500 Jews (many of them, though, were killed by the Israeli war machine itself, and many of them were uniformed or other military and police personnel).
Look at the huge disproportion. This goes well beyond, hugely beyond, any talk of “a pound of flesh” etc. The ratio of disproportion is somewhere around 250 to 1. Also, the time disproportion— one day as against over two years, a ratio of about 750 to 1.
When the “postponed” elections in parts of England are held, both Lab and Con are going to be stamped into the ground, where they belong.
As I blogged yesterday, the “Labour” vote at Caerphilly was less than a quarter of what it had been at the previous election; the “Conservative” vote was about one-eighth of what it had previously been.
Apply that to English Westminster constituencies.
To believe, as a few msm commentators seem to believe (e.g. Dan Hodges) that one or both System parties can somehow suddenly become (even superficially) “credible” now, is clutching at straws. The same goes for the idea that Reform UK support has “plateaued“.
Well maybe, maybe not, but even if it has, that level is still between 25% and 36% (its best so far, only a week ago), and that is enough, even if Reform and the Lab/Con parties all get 25% each (and at present Lab and Con are both below 20%), to give Reform a plurality of Commons seats (around 215), though not a majority.
Indeed, were Reform to “plateau” at 30%, with Lab and Con on 20% each, Reform would get about 384 seats (a very good majority), Lab about 94, and the Cons around 40 (the Cons just below both the LibDems and the SNP).
When Corbyn was leader Labour won Caerphilly with 22,491 votes (54.5% vote share). Starmer has just lost the seat, which had been held by Labour for over a hundred years, with 3,713 votes (11% vote share). Of course, Labour is being pulled apart by centrifugal forces. Late thought
Just saw the film Oppenheimer, about the atom-bomb scientist. Pretty good, but too long by about half an hour and that last 30 mins or so of typically-American stuff about postwar legal arguments, and Congressional hearings, could have been cut out without loss.
One part of the film struck me, though the specific facts were not new to me, I having read books about the Manhattan Project and the atom bomb spies etc.
The film reminded me that the scientists at Los Alamos in the early 1940s were concerned that the first atom bomb might start a chain reaction which would be unstoppable and cause, inter alia, the atmosphere of the Earth to ignite. Despite that possibility still existing at time of detonation of the first full test, they decided to go ahead. Why? Well, almost all of the important scientists were Jews, and for them the defeat of the “antisemitic” German Reich was more important than the possibility that all life on Earth might be destroyed.
Lesson? For “them”, it really is always “all about them”…
