Saturday quiz

Well, this week a narrow victory over political journalist John Rentoul, who scored 6/10. I scored 7/10, and did not know the answers to questions 3, 5, and 8.

[Starmer-stein and Angela Rayner kneel in fealty to the black mobs of “Black Lives Matter” a few years ago, at Westminster. Both traitors to the British people]

Well over half the adult population of the UK get at least some of their income from social security “welfare” benefits. If you include state pensions in the definition, the figure must be over 60%. Attack people’s survival at your peril, Starmer-stein.

Yes, Farage, as a finance-capitalist promoter, also wants to reduce the “welfare bill”, but if Starmer thinks that the way to stop Reform UK is to say “they will do it too“, he is certainly very mistaken.

There is a necessity to move towards some kind of Basic Income system, once the connected immigration and migration-invasion issue is fully sorted-out.

I have already predicted that on the blog. Look at the House of Lords. Already over 800 members, and by 2029 could be 900 or more. Not one adheres to Reform UK. Farage could either abolish the Lords, or create 1,000 new peers. If he does neither, he may well find any radical legislation blocked.

Correction, Goodwin— 600 so far today. Probably 1,000 of the bastards by the close of play.

Options include sterilization, concentration, deportation, and elimination.

Britain has no need for any new housing at all. What it needs is fewer inhabitants. Fewer (no) migrant-invaders, more (none at present) remigration, more (not much happening at present) deportation, and (not happening at present) elimination of greedy developers.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Camp_of_the_Saints

“Small boat” arrivals are only about 5% of all arrivals by migrants. Concentrating on the “small boats” (however necessary that is) often misses the bigger problem, which is “legal” immigration, and also births to non-Europeans.

Andrew Marr personifies the overpaid BBC/Sky (etc) msm drone who is basically an enemy of the future of the UK. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrew_Marr

The Kiev regime is losing 1,000-2,000 troops on the front-lines every single day. Therefore, the Kiev-regime’s press-gangs abduct potentially-suitable, if unwilling, “recruits” off the streets.

The “recruits” know that to be posted to the front-lines is an almost-guaranteed death sentence, so they fight their abductors, or try to flee. Most fail, and are carted away to be brutally subdued, then given a few weeks of rudimentary training before ending up in the squalid ranks of other impressed “soldiers” on those front-lines. Low or no pay, little food, and an open-ended commitment. No wonder that several hundred thousand have deserted in the past 3+ years.

Russia is winning this unpleasant war; it cannot afford to lose and will not lose, despite its army’s deficiencies.

Quite good, though I could have done without the howling.

Meanwhile, the Jew-Zionists in the UK, such as that dead-eyed woman in Brighton who is very prolific on Twitter/X, say “oh, look, the ‘Pals’ say that we, the Jews, Israeli Jews, are literally starving to death children in Gaza, but here is one starved child in Gaza who may have died from a pre-existing rare medical condition! So the Palestinian Arabs in Gaza are lying!“…

I do not think that “they”, or most of them, even really see themselves, they are so indoctrinated.

…and what about the tens of thousands of Arab children killed by bombing, shooting (including deliberate and sadistic targeting) etc by the Israeli forces over the past 3 years alone?

It’s almost as if, er, “that man” (you know who) was right…

Iran is trying to produce viable nuclear weapons, and is pushing ahead with production of thousands, tens of thousands, of drones, as well as advanced medium to long-range rockets with high-grade conventional warheads in large numbers. When the time comes, the rockets will rain down on Israel. Israel is doomed.

There is a connection, unexplored by any msm “journalists”, connecting “antifascism” and “antifascists”, Zionist Jewish and pro-Israel loonies, and mental illness generally. I blogged about it years ago:

A Labour Friends of Israel member in a Labour Friends of Israel government. Join the dots…

Yvette Cooper and Keir Starmer (both active members of Labour Friends of Israel) listening with apparent respect to the Chief Rabbi of the UK (who was born in South Africa, lived for many years in Israel, and then in Ireland, before arriving in this country).

For a great deal more detail about the activities of “Mark Lewis Lawyer” (especially), Simon Myerson, Daniel Berke, and Beth Grossman (all Jewish solicitors or barristers), please use the search box on the blog.

Of course, Prime Minister’s Questions, invented in fairly recent times [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prime_Minister%27s_Questions] has become a meaningless ping-pong match and televised spectacle for the masses (in 10-second or 20-second extracts on TV news). It accomplishes little. From that understanding, it is but a step to recognizing the uselessness of Parliament itself.

Once Reform tries and fails to do more than, say, 10% of what is necessary (not just on migration invasion, but across the waterfront), real social nationalism can arise, for the first time since the 1930s.

Wall. Squad. End. (would have been the correct sentence).

Up against a wall.

Talking point

I am against killing, generally (and not just re. people), but “desperate times call for desperate measures“, as we shall see by the 2030s and 2040s.

The 2026 local elections, which will include parts of Solihull, will probably prove a wipe-out for both Lab and Con. It looks as though Reform’s time has come.

More Israeli war crimes, with yet more upcoming. What a horrible tribe.

I have seen replies to Goodwin’s tweet, those saying that Lucy Connolly would be disqualified from standing by reason of having been sentenced to, or detained for, more than one year. That is not so. Now that she has been released, there is no legal or constitutional bar on her standing for election as an MP.

It would just be brilliant were Lucy Connolly to stand against Yvette Cooper and win. I think it would be possible. Yvette Cooper got a 47.5% vote-share in 2024, with Reform in —fairly good— second place on 29.1%. The Con candidate was well behind on 15%. However, turnout was a mere 48.2%.

Bearing in mind Yvette Cooper’s incompetent showing as Home Secretary, the fall in support for Labour, and the collapse in support for the Conservative Party, it is not implausible to guess that, at the next General Election, the result in that constituency might be to return Lucy Connolly for Reform UK with maybe 50% of the vote, Yvette Cooper for Labour getting maybe 35%, and the Con candidate 5%.

Tactical voting might well play a part. A Con vote in that constituency is a wasted vote now. Also, as said, in 2024, fewer than half of the eligible voters even voted (48.2%), indicating extreme disenchantment with both Lab and Con, the previous main contenders there (in a differently-named constituency on somewhat different boundaries).

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pontefract,Castleford_and_Knottingley(UK_Parliament_constituency)#Elections_in_the_2020s

Lucy Connolly might be able to do it, I think.

Talking point

Is it surprising, really? After all, the State of Israel was founded on “ethnic cleansing”, massacres of Arab civilians (men, women, and children), and theft of land and housing. Also, while many Israelis and other Jews are in reality not descended from the ancient Israelites of the Bible, the Israelis seem to follow the genocidal tendencies of those ancient tribespeople (as recounted in the Old Testament).

Gaza. West Bank. Surrounding countries.

In fact, notSlovakian” (though no doubt carrying Slovakian passports) but Roma Gypsies, but not even the sensationalist Daily Mail will print that, or the full truth.

That has been the case for months. The msm in the UK is totally out of touch, as is the connected Westminster political milieu.

Even some Jews, even some pro-Israel Zionist Jews, are appalled by what these settler/colonists are doing.

I believe that most of them are from places such as the slums of Brooklyn.

What a horrible tribe.

I have a few of Simon Sebag Montefiore’s books; he makes some interesting historical documentaries for TV, too. An old Jew in Little Venice once told me, 30+ years ago, that the Montefiore family was “Jewish royalty“.

Saturday quiz

Well, I did much better than political journalist John Rentoul this week— 7/10 as against his claimed “4 and a half out of 10” (not sure how he managed to give himself a half-point for no.7; still, there it is). I did not know the answers to questions 6 and 9; I might have got no. 3 had I thought about it (but did not, because I jumped at Francesca di Rimini which was composed a couple of years earlier).

Unpleasant Jew “restaurant critic” (what a silly job) talks about “our” (i.e. British) “Battle of Britain bravery“. He, of course, has never served in any armed force; neither have any of his family (not in this country, anyway; I suppose that it is possible that he has relatives serving in the Israeli forces).

I was unable to read the full article, by reason of the paywall; why would anyone pay to read that sort of ignorant rubbish?

Rentoul, as usual, supporting pseudo-“moderate”/”centrist” Labour-label. Making out that the spending cuts are not really cuts at all. Tell that to people who will now be deprived of much or all of their income because of this Labour Friends of Israel misgovernment (Liz Kendall, Rachel Reeves and, of course, Starmer-stein himself).

Others may get more, yes, and more will be spent on keeping alive, sheltered, and fed, useless and hostile migrant-invaders by the million. British people needing help will, in many cases, not get that help, or much of it.

Well, they are now no longer married, and he is no longer an MP. As Katie Hopkins puts it, “Batshit Bonkers Britain“…

Increasingly, I can agree with the idea of England, or England & Wales, becoming a separate republic. Let those north of Hadrian’s Wall, and those across the Irish Sea, go their own way (without the subsidy from England), particularly as many of the Scots seem, in their delusion, to not only be willing to accept migration-invasion by blacks and browns but even (ludicrously) to welcome it! I certainly see little or no serious Scottish opposition to the invasion, even at the low level of opposition so far seen on the streets of England.

[“I’m hearing language like ‘we have to be prepared for a b******’, that’s Donald Trump, ‘to do mad things’”. @Nicholaswatt says there’s concern among both Labour and Conservative MPs over the US President’s approach to Ukraine and global diplomacy. #Newsnight“].

Ha ha. For decades, certainly since Blair became Prime Minister in 1997, the UK has been the poodle of the ZOG/NWO American governments. Now, suddenly, the USA is going its own way, in a direction NWO/ZOG, at least in Europe, does not like. Suddenly, Europe, both EU and UK etc, finds itself almost powerless, and squashed (as was mainland Europe in 1945) between the (?) all-powerful USA and a somewhat powerful Russia.

I should like Europe to find its own way forward in a social-national way, independent of both USA and Russia (but closer to the latter) but, at present, Europe is under ZOG control— pro-Jewish Lobby, pro-Israel, pro the Jew-Zionist regime in “Ukraine”. The present European power structures have to be taken down before a better Europe (call it “Christendom” or “Grail Europe” if you like) can arise.

Funny-looking creature, that Rennie journalist. Had not previously heard of him. Turns out that his father was the Rennie who was the Chief of SIS/MI6 from 1967-1973: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Rennie_(columnist); https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Rennie_(MI6_officer).

Rennie senior’s other, and elder, son was arrested, charged, prosecuted and (presumably; nothing online about it) convicted of a large-scale heroin importation conspiracy in 1973: https://time.com/archive/6840716/britain-cs-busted-cover/.

Charles Tatham Ogilvy Rennie was later adjudged bankrupt (discharged in 1978).

As for the Economist, one of the most important “house journals” of the New World Order conspiracy (despite the fact that the Economist is usually wrong in its predictions, a fact that I started to notice as early as the 1980s).

Further to above:

Only in rare instances have the links between the Hong Kong opium firms, British intelligence, and the Chinese Communist Intelligence Service come to public light. Where they have, the results put the best pulp thrillers to shame. One illustration is the story of the luckless Rennie family, Scots traders who sold their operation to Jardine Matheson in 1975. The Rennies are old Africa and Asia hands both in merchant ventures and the British colonial service, with major operations in South Africa, through Rennies Consolidated Holdings Ltd. (7).”

Annoying

I have mentioned this before, though long ago, on the blog. There is a tweeter with the same or similar name to me, and who tweets as “@IanMillard100”. I understand that he is an IT specialist resident in Bath.

It is of course not his fault that he has the same name as me and that he tweets (I myself have not tweeted since expelled from Twitter in 2018), but I find it slightly irritating, simply because some people may think that he is me and that his tweets are from me. He occasionally replies to tweets from Elon Musk etc.

Anyway, if any readers were wondering whether “@IanMillard100” is me, he is not me. Over and out.

The USA under Trump is not going to back up the UK and EU states if they get into a shooting war with Russia.

Indeed, the belligerent calls from Brussels, Berlin, Warsaw, Paris, and London for fast rearmament, and especially nuclear weapons increases, are likely to make Russian strategists think that those capitals, and connected nuclear weapons production and launch sites, should be eliminated before such proposed nuclear rearmament takes place…

The voters are willing to take any option that seems to have a chance. The System parties have all failed. If only there were a proper social-national party able to take on the challenge. The “Parliamentary road” is not the way forward, as such, but may have a part to play. All roads lead to Rome.

The truth is that, since the 1970s, paid work has become far more stressful in the UK. The “long hours culture”, “present-ism”, no proper lunch hours, the vulgar trend of people eating at their desks, the perceived “need” to be on-call in the evenings or at weekends etc. All for other peoples’ profits and self-aggrandisement.

Still, I would not expect Kate Ferguson, the Political Editor (yes, they really do have one) of the Sun on Sunday, to want to acknowledge any of that.

Does Starmer want the UK to become an irradiated wasteland?

Having said that, if it were only one massive warhead, landing on Central London, the centre of most of the socio-political degeneracy and corruption (and “the lobby”, i.e. “them”), it might at least have a silver lining…

It might even give the British people the chance to have a proper social-national government, and thus a new society, once the main enemies are eliminated.

Will look forward to reading that, and probably reposting it on the blog.

As Fiona Syms (ex-wife of an ex-MP) knows well enough, Reform UK is not really a “fringe party”. It has only 5 MPs because the electoral system in this country is both grotesquely unfair and grotesquely illogical.

At GE 2024 (and in rough terms), out of every 20 eligible voters, 8 did not vote, 4 voted Labour, 3 voted Conservative, 2 voted Reform UK, 2 voted LibDem, and 1 voted Green.

If Reform UK is “a fringe party“, then so is not only the Green Party, but also the LibDems (who got 500,000 fewer votes than Reform UK), and indeed the Conservatives, who received only slightly more than 1.5x the votes cast for Reform UK. Even Labour only received just over 2.3x the Reform UK vote.

In actual numbers: Labour 9,708,716; Conservatives 6,828,925; Reform UK 4,117,620; LibDems 3,519,143; Green Party 1,841,888.

Crazed Britain

A woman who shielded for nine months was killed on her first day out after being hit by a lorry while searching for a face mask in her handbag. I myself have saved not only reckless pheasant and pigeons (not to mention a number of cats) from certain death on the road recently, but several equally-reckless human persons, including one old lady and one young girl, both of whom insisted on stepping in front of my car while muzzled, and also engrossed in what I took to be mobile telephones.

I have blogged about Paul Mason previously. When he writes about economics, he can be interesting, but when he writes or speaks about politics, he is ludicrous. His political viewpoint seems to be a kind of anarcho-syndicalist/Trotskyist/general “Leftist” mixture which leaves both history and good sense far behind.

Why does Mason support Jewish-lobby puppet, Keir Starmer? Well, that is an open question. Mason is part-Jew, like Owen Jones and other msm talking heads, so that may be part of it. There again, it may be that Mason thinks that “mainstream” Labour is still the only political game in town apart from the equally-misnamed Conservative Party. He may therefore imagine that he can perhaps influence Starmer-Labour, and so rescue himself from being a fringe commentator.

For all I know, Mason may even harbour ambitions to become a Labour MP and then something more, such as, in time, a major Labour Party figure. Who knows?

That may seem to be absurd, but perhaps less so than “Boris” becoming a Cabinet minister and then Prime Minister…if one political bad joke can rise high, why not another? After all, it happened not only to “Boris” but to Priti Patel, Sajid Javid, Grant Shapps, Matt Hancock etc. A similar case: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yanis_Varoufakis.

Never say never…

John Pilger! A “blast from the past” as people used to say. Had not heard of him for many years. 81 now, apparently: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Pilger.

The prosecutor? “Gordon Kromberg“. Every. Single. Time.

Another myth is that a scientist is, ipso facto, honest. We have seen enough fakery around the “climate change” narrative to have a different view. For example, that scientist (whose name I forget) at the UN IPCC (and University of East Anglia) who colluded with the Indian at the IPCC to falsify data, so that the public would believe the “climate change” narrative more readily.

That was about 13 years ago, about the same time as said Indian claimed that the Himalayan glaciers would cease to exist by about 2015, leading to the Ganges, Brahmaputra, Indus and other rivers running dry. Not yet, anyway.

Many will recall the Al Gore film, An Inconvenient Truth, with its claims that, inter alia, “climate change” caused the Aral Sea to dry up (no, it was caused by the mad diversion of rivers in order to support cotton production: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aral_Sea).

That is without even starting on certain “historical” untruths…scientists are not necessarily any more credible than historians, when they depend on certain “narratives” for their careers, publishing etc.

Peter Hitchens has an almost touching faith in the efficacy of writing to MPs. That is one rather big delusion (though I like much of what he writes). I do not know what might change the mind of the clowns now posing as MPs. Not letters, anyway…

Those once-fine old English/British institutions such as the RSPB, RNLI, National Trust etc have all been taken over by the enemy, the fake communitarians of Common Purpose, “BLM” etc. The enemy thus gets well-paid while subverting both the institution in question and the general society. A general purge is needed.

The sort of rabbits that go around wearing facemasks are really the weak-minded who do what they think the mob wants. “Everybody” does it, think they. In fact, I would go so far as to say that if you see someone masked or muzzled when the law does not mandate it, that person can probably be written off as a free or independent thinker.

Glad to see that I am not the only person awake! Ouspensky [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P._D._Ouspensky] once had an experience in the street in which he perceived that all others in that street were actually asleep, not really awake…

I was in Australia for 3 years in the late 1960s, and attended school there (Middle Harbour PS and North Sydney Boys’ High). I have come to understand that basically Anglo countries such as Australia and the UK are held back by their basic philistinism; in other words, by their prioritizing of mass spectator sport and mass TV rubbish over thinking freely.

Thus, the System can easily impose a biosecurity police state, or import millions of backward people from Africa, Asia, Caribbean, without the slightest serious challenge from the people, because what matters to the (so far) majority white population is not spirituality, philosophy, history, good government, even logic, but winning some televised sporting pleb-fest on the other side of the world.

Look at New Zealand. I do not say that Brenton Tarrant [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christchurch_mosque_shootings] did the “right thing” in 2019 (indeed, I blogged to the contrary at the time: https://ianrobertmillard.org/2019/03/25/the-new-zealand-attack-and-related-matters/), but he saw New Zealand’s trajectory and wanted to change it, whereas the mass of the population was and remains asleep, and led by a woman totally part of the international System [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jacinda_Ardern].

I’m with tweeter “@barbyonabike” as far as this goes.

Well, as I understand it (may or may not be correct), Tommy Robinson is not only insolvent but actually bankrupt [https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/tommy-robinson-cocaine-donations-prison-b1787467.html], in which case the damages awarded today will not be collected.

Legal action cannot usually be taken against a bankrupt, but the issuance of proceedings for legal action in this case preceded the bankruptcy petition.

It will be recalled that I blogged prolifically about the supposed legal action (in harassment, I think) being taken a couple of years ago by Twitter twit, “antifa” cheerleader and mental case Mike Stuchbery against Tommy Robinson. It never was likely to happen, as I said from the start. Now, it cannot. A bankrupt cannot usually be sued, as noted. Also, there would be no point in suing “Tommy Robinson” now, even if it could be done.

I suppose that that one will have to be filed with Stuchbery’s other fantasy libel actions (against stray Twitter users, a number of Danes who laughed at him, and against me!). He loves the idea that he might “clean them out”…

Never mind, he can also send me (yet another— he sent a couple in the past when he forgot to take his medication) would-be intimidating comment on my blog comments page. They made me laugh (which is “the best medicine”, it is said; not that I need any).

Stuchbery, with “Resisting Hate” Twitter troll Roanna Carleton Taylor (“@witchofpeace”, aka “@antifashwitch” and now “@oilpaintwitch”) launched a GoFundMe appeal to pay for action against “Robinson”. A Pakistani one-man solicitor firm was supposedly going to issue proceedings. As I guessed would prove to be the case, from the beginning, it never happened.

I still sometimes idly wonder what Roanna Carleton Taylor, Stuchbery, and the Pakistani did with the nearly £12,000 they were given (by a total of nearly 700 “antifascist” mugs). It certainly was not spent on legal work. It seems that the Pakistani drafted only one very short and very poor “letter before action” to Stephen Yaxley-Lennon (Tommy Robinson’s real name), which letter may not even have been delivered.

My 99-y-o mother-in-law only knew she had it after having been routinely tested while in hospital for a fracture; oh, and she contracted it in hospital, where all patients were constantly masked, an indictment of both the appallingly-poor hygiene in NHS hospitals and the uselessness of facemasks; she was discharged weeks later, still without symptoms.

My 20-something Australian niece (working in London) contracted the virus last year, but only required a few paracetomol tablets and a few weeks of rest. I know of no-one else at all who has knowingly contracted “Covid-19”.

The Urgent Necessity for Basic Income (or its equivalent)

Preamble

I have blogged previously about the need for Basic Income (see Notes, below).

One important point is that the nexus connecting work and pay is loosening in the more developed countries. Already, computers, automation and modern business streamlining have led to the situation whereby, apart from actual unemployment, there is huge underemployment. In the UK, we see, in big picture terms, that the poorer half of the workforce is still being paid less in real terms (the latest statistics suggest about 7% less) than was paid in 2007 for equivalent work.

Now, there is a headlong rush into greater automation and, crucially, to Artificial Intelligence [AI].

Working Tax Credits as Government Subsidy to Poor-Paying Employers

Even before the financial upheaval of 2007-2008, it is clear that the “market”, as “hidden hand” mechanism, delivering adequate pay for required work, was not working properly or as old-thinking economic theory suggested that it should. Employers were unwilling or in some cases unable to offer pay high enough for employees to subsist on, let alone live decently on.

The answer of the Blair-Brown governments was to offer employees “working tax credits”, i.e. a form of “welfare”/”social security” for those in employment, the purpose of which was (and at time of writing still is) to top-up inadequate pay to a determined level. A more limited measure, Family Credit, claimable only by families, was in operation from 1986-1999.

The most obvious drawback of Working Tax Credit [WTC], i.e. that it in effect subsidizes poor and poor-paying employers out of general taxation, was either not foreseen by self-styled financial genius Gordon Brown, or was ignored by him and/or Tony Blair. Adding insult to injury was and is the fact that some of the worst-paying employing companies are also those most adept at avoiding tax liability: transnational enterprises such as Amazon in particular.

In other words, an employee is forced (by circumstances) to work for pay which is not enough for that employee to live on, even at a very basic level. That pay is then topped-up to a minimum subsistence level by Working Tax Credit, which is paid for not directly by the exploitative employer but by government, and so by general taxation. Low-paid employees pay little or no income tax now, but still pay so-called National Insurance, which is today just another or extra income tax in all but name. Put simply, the low-paid worker is paying out for his or her own Working Tax Credit, at least to some extent.

The poor-paying employer has no incentive to pay decently, because the government will stump up enough to keep the employee in place.

Real-terms pay now, for very many people, is inferior to what was paid in the 1980s and 1970s. Conditions of employment are also worse in reality (though that aspect is not part of this blog post).

At present, 5 million people in the UK receive WTC, while another 2 million are entitled to receive it but, for whatever reason, do not apply for it.

Other Government Top-Ups to Pay

In addition to basic Working Tax Credit, people in low-paying jobs and who have children can get extra money via WTC , as can disabled workers.

Persons who are disabled or unwell (including employed persons) can receive Disability Living Allowance, which is not means-tested.

Persons who have children are also entitled to Child Benefit, regardless of capital or income (up to £50,000-£60,000, tapering).

Persons of the age(s) specified can receive State Pension regardless of whether they work or not; moreover, whether or not they have ever worked.

Limited Elements of Basic Income Already Embedded in the Existing System

  • State Pension, paid whatever the individual’s capital or income, and whether or not the individual is working (employed or self-employed) or not and (if you include Pension Guarantee Credit), payable regardless of how much the pensioner has paid in via National Insurance;
  • Child Benefit, paid regardless of income (under £50,000 p.a.);
  • Disability Living Allowance (and its successor, “Personal Independence Payment” or PIP), paid regardless of capital or income to qualifying persons (and this is not the place in which to examine why politicians and Department of Work and Pensions [DWP] civil servants often choose vulgar names for State benefits and programmes: cf. “Jobseeker’s Allowance” etc).

Advantages of Basic Income

  • Simplicity. A Basic Income would mean that most of the existing DWP structure could be dispensed with: the vast edifice of “Jobcentres” (office buildings), filled with DWP staff engaged in adminstration, and the snooping upon, monitoring, “assessing” of claimants etc. The absurdity of it is that many claimants are only getting about £75 a week anyway. The present Kafka-esque set-up really should be and can be junked. Probably 90% of the present 85,000 DWP employees can be made redundant. The financial savings from that, decommissioning of buildings, running costs etc would be in the tens of billions annually; the untold billions paid by the State to useless and dishonest private contractors, such as ATOS and Capita, would also be saved;
  • Security of Citizens. It has been shown in overseas pilot studies (eg recently in Finland) that having a Basic Income, even if small, gives people a sense of security only available until now to those with an inherited private income. Yes, some people will decide to loaf all day, maybe even drink all day, but others will do paid work, start small businesses, improve their cultural level, volunteer locally or far away etc. The idle and/or useless are like that under the present system anyway and are costing the State money even now, both directly and indirectly (eg via the costs of policing, NHS, prisons etc);

Doubts Often Expressed about Basic Income

  • “People will not want to work if they get money for nothing”: well, most wealthy inheritors of capital, most of those living off trust incomes etc do seem to want to work in some way, or to set up businesses, or at least to write, paint, or other similar activity. Don’t disparage writing or other artistic activity. After all, Harry Potter, which snowballed into a huge industry employing, altogether, many thousands and even tens of thousands, came out of the mind of one lady, a single mother on State benefits; J.K. Rowling herself has said that, under the punitive present benefits regime, she would have been messed around so much that it would have been impossible for her to sit in cafes with her baby writing Harry Potter. True, some people will simply loaf. They do that under the present system. Don’t think that there are no costs to the State and society now (even if actual benefits are cut off): police costs, court and legal costs, NHS costs, too;
  • “The cost to the taxpayer”: the cost of Basic Income would be little more than the present “welfare” (social security) system, once you take into account the huge savings on DWP and HMRC bureaucracy, savings by not using useless/dishonest outsourcing organizations, the economic benefit of people spending more, stimulating the economy, setting up new small businesses;
  • “People getting Basic Income money that they do not even need”: firstly, what people “need” is, beyond the basic level, something subjective. Apart from that, there is no problem with clawing back monies paid to those above a certain income. All that need happen is that a maximum level of income (all income) for recipients be set. All persons above that income level to be taxed or super-taxed to the same level as Basic Income received. The level might be a total (including Basic Income) of £30,000, assuming Basic Income of perhaps £15,000 per year. In that case, the person would be taxed the £15,000, leaving £15,000. Yes, there would be apparent unfairness at lower income levels, whereby it might be questioned why work, when you could simply receive the (in the example given) £15,000 and not work. However, even then the recipient does gain, via extra security in case of job loss or illness; alternatively, the threshold could be set higher, say at £50,000 p.a.

Variations on the Basic Income Theme

Instead of money alone, Basic Income could include benefits paid to certain persons, such as free housing for persons receiving less than a certain income. The danger here is in the complexity and cost, as under the existing system, as well as monies wasted going to landlords charging excessive rents. It may be that the way forward is to add to the existing (in the UK) more or less “free” (at point of use) health service, free education at primary and secondary level etc. Examples:

  • free public transport, whether local or regional;
  • free car insurance;
  • free domestic utilities;
  • free NHS or similar;
  • free education.

Basic Income as Necessity

It is clear that, in the UK, relatively few people at present are purely living off what they can earn by work or by investments and/or trust income. 7 million are eligible for Working Tax Credits, millions more are children, retired people, disabled and not working, unemployed etc. For many, working for pay does not cover the basic necessities of life, let alone provide a decent human existence. The State already recognizes these facts.

The explosion in artificial intelligence and robotics will turn the screw. For example, there are at present 356,300 taxi drivers and private hire drivers in the UK. The technology already exists to replace them. It is unlikely that more than a small percentage will still be doing such work in, say, 2030. That’s just one group affected. Groups as diverse as farmers, lawyers, surgeons, pilots, security guards will all be made, as groups, largely redundant.

Basic Income is not just the right thing, but the necessary thing.

Update, 11 March 2019

People generally are now waking up to both the desirability and the practical possibility of Basic Income:

Update, 8 September 2019

The necessity for Basic Income is spreading, but not yet to enough people. Many still think that it is “expensive” (probably the same people who believe that the answer to a recession is to “cut spending”…). There is, however, dissent…
