Until a couple of years ago, a very unprofessional NHS psychiatrist prolific online, one Tim G. Stevens, often insulted me on Twitter/X (not that such has ever bother me; water off a duck’s back). Stevens even made up, years ago, a story to the effect that I, satirical singer-songwriter Alison Chabloz, and another, were plotting to attack him and his family (wife and two daughters) at their home in or near Loughton, Essex. A number of utter mugs on Twitter actually believed Stevens, and commiserated online with him!
The Essex NHS trust which employs or employed Stevens provided Alison Chabloz with a formal apology, and I was given a sort-of apology by that NHS trust, and told that Stevens would be subject to disciplinary proceedings (the third party did not want to involve herself in anything by complaining formally).
Since then, Stevens both spoke on ethics at the official convention for psychiatrists a few years ago (you really cannot make up this scheiss!) and was hospitalized with delusions for a while. As someone remarked, the psychiatrist was in need of a psychiatrist…

Yes. That is a very partial view. Fresh vegetables and fruits, when available, were unrationed. Some vegetables were abundant and actually had to be promoted by ads; potato, carrot etc. Fresh fish was unrationed (though in short supply), and bread was unrationed until after the war. Beer was unrationed, when available.
Naturally, the people who lived on country estates were best-placed to weather rationing. Game birds, and fish, were unrationed, and people living on a country estate would have ready access to eggs and other foodstuffs (and of course could grow fruits and vegetables in kitchen gardens or fields). Such people would also often have extensive wine cellars, so would have been able to drink French (and German!) wines bought before 1940.
I recall that the Cornish country house of which I had a lease (about 22 or so years ago) had quite large wine cellars (unstocked when I was there) which brought to mind the horror film adaptations of the works of Edgar Allan Poe:

Memory Lane
I happened to see that someone with whom I was slightly acquainted at school in the early 1970s died a couple of years ago. Not someone I really knew, or knew well, because he, Matthew Perry by name, was in the “B” or “C” stream of my year, whereas I was in the “A” stream.
In fact, I really only became acquainted with Perry —and he was never a friend as such; I never visited his home or went anywhere with him— because, if I remember aright, we were both in the Bridge Club. An amusing fellow, with several stories to tell, often about (horse-) racing or gambling generally. The sort of person one might, in an older person, call “clubbable”.
I noticed from the piece I saw (from the online mag of my old school —incidentally, I should never have recognized him from the appended photo, perhaps taken in an unwell later year) that, after his school years were over, he had done well in pharmaceuticals, but had also flown aid to Africa (Uganda, I think it said).
Quite a few people of the same or similar age to myself, and whom I knew as a small child, older child, or generally in youth, are now no longer on this Earth. In fact, the same goes for several people I knew in later life. A reminder that we have to do what we can, accomplish our mission (of whatever kind) while still here.

I have seen replies to Goodwin’s tweet, those saying that Lucy Connolly would be disqualified from standing by reason of having been sentenced to, or detained for, more than one year. That is not so. Now that she has been released, there is no legal or constitutional bar on her standing for election as an MP.
It would just be brilliant were Lucy Connolly to stand against Yvette Cooper and win. I think it would be possible. Yvette Cooper got a 47.5% vote-share in 2024, with Reform in —fairly good— second place on 29.1%. The Con candidate was well behind on 15%. However, turnout was a mere 48.2%.
Bearing in mind Yvette Cooper’s incompetent showing as Home Secretary, the fall in support for Labour, and the collapse in support for the Conservative Party, it is not implausible to guess that, at the next General Election, the result in that constituency might be to return Lucy Connolly for Reform UK with maybe 50% of the vote, Yvette Cooper for Labour getting maybe 35%, and the Con candidate 5%.
Tactical voting might well play a part. A Con vote in that constituency is a wasted vote now. Also, as said, in 2024, fewer than half of the eligible voters even voted (48.2%), indicating extreme disenchantment with both Lab and Con, the previous main contenders there (in a differently-named constituency on somewhat different boundaries).

Incidentally, as that report makes plain, the “Spanish Flu” (which in fact seems to have originated in the USA, specifically in Kansas) is variously estimated to have killed anywhere from 17 to 50 million people worldwide (including 200,000 in the UK), which certainly puts the “Covid” “panicdemic” in perspective.
While 200,000+ are supposed to have died “with Covid” in the UK over the five years 2020-2025 (mostly in 2020-2022), almost all of those deaths were in fact from other causes and/or from normal winter influenza (reclassified, in effect, as “Covid” deaths).
Did the authorities of 1918-1919 “lock down” the country, or the world? No. Life continued.
