“George Buchanan (Scottish Gaelic: Seòras Bochanan; February 1506 – 28 September 1582) was a Scottish historian and humanist scholar. According to historian Keith Brown, Buchanan was “the most profound intellectual sixteenth century Scotland produced.” His ideology of resistance to royal usurpation gained widespread acceptance during the Scottish Reformation. Brown says the ease with which King James VII was deposed in 1689 shows the power of Buchananite ideas.[1]
His treatise De Jure Regni apud Scotos, published in 1579, discussed the doctrine that the source of all political power is the people, and that the king is bound by those conditions under which the supreme power was first committed to his hands, and that it is lawful to resist, even to punish, tyrants. The importance of Buchanan’s writings is shown by the suppression of his work by James VI and the British legislatures in the century following their publication. It was condemned by act of parliament in 1584, and burned by the University of Oxford in 1664 and 1683.[2]“

The main thing, though, is that the international agenda, and indeed the post-1945 international order, is being reset. Britain is not involved, not as a player. It is, at most, an object, as are the other western and central European states.

It is the latest in a string of incidents in which police have investigated people for social media posts, including newspaper columnist Allison Pearson, feminist writer Julie Bindel, and former policeman Harry Miller, whose name was added to a database for his ‘non-crime hate incident’. Mr Miller, who founded the Fair Cop campaign group, said of Mrs Jones’s treatment: ‘It flies in the face of our freedoms and it’s wrong. That’s far more akin to a European police force – or even worse a Stasi police force.’
At around 1.30pm last Tuesday, while Mrs Jones was looking after her baby grandson at a nearby house, a detective sergeant and another officer knocked at her door and spoke to her husband Lee, 54, via an intercom.
A shocked Mrs Jones rushed home fearing something tragic had happened to a loved one. At 2.15pm she received a phone call from an officer thought to be the same sergeant who knocked on her door and was told the police had received a complaint about her recent social media posts.
Speaking exclusively to the MoS, she said: ‘[The officer] said, ‘We’ve had a complaint,’ and I immediately asked, ‘From who?’, and he said, ‘Well, I can’t tell you that’.’
She asked if Cllr Sedgwick or his partner had made the complaint. ‘[The officer’s] exact words were ‘Your thought process is correct in that’,’ said Mrs Jones. ‘I asked the police officer, have I committed any sort of crime. Why did you call at my door? They said, ‘Someone has spoken to us about your social media posts.’
‘I then said, ‘If I don’t take your advice and continue doing what I am doing, will I be committing a crime?’ He said no. I then asked. ‘What will you do about it?’ He said, ‘There’s not a lot we can do, we are just giving you advice’.’

They don’t want to face the brutal truth that the social contract has been ripped up by a political class that has long refused to put the interests of ordinary British people first, or to deliver on our repeatedly expressed wishes at the ballot box – on immigration, crime, tax and much else.
Drug use, shoplifting and defrauding the state go unpunished. Millions of economically burdensome migrants from places and cultures vastly different from our own are invited in, housed and fed at our expense – and we are attacked and slurred as bigots if we complain.
As for democracy, it’s obvious from the visible decline in our country – which worsened after the 2008 financial crash and which has accelerated under Keir Starmer – that it isn’t delivering the right results.
Our supposed parliamentary rule is either an illusion, an anachronism or, if it does exist, clearly not fit for purpose.
After Labour’s landslide win last summer, it rapidly dawned on many of us who had voted for the first time that we were essentially politically impotent.
Britain is crying out for leadership that can steer the country to safety.
Gen Z’s demands are not unreasonable: fairer taxes, affordable homes, cheaper energy and an end to unlimited immigration.
We ask that everyone contributes their fair share and that crime is properly punished.
We want to trust our neighbours, and talk to them in our own language. We want a sense of identity and belonging.
Which is why, I believe, we now need decisive action: a leader who would declare a state of emergency in response to illegal migration.
Without a strong leader who can reverse deindustrialisation, neoliberal economic policy and mass immigration, our country seems condemned to a future of being riddled with crime, political strife and social unrest.
Yet perhaps, out of this ongoing catastrophe, renewal will come.
History, after all, has a way of throwing up great men or women when the hour calls for them.

It sounds drastic – because it is drastic.

Of course, if people lack shelter, clothing, warmth, food, other needs and/or wants, then “freedom”, let alone the existing form of supposed “democracy”, will not seem of the most pressing importance.
One has to wonder why the Daily Mail is allowing such views, those of this Charlie Downes, to be blasted so explosively on its pages. It seems to me that the main reason is that the Conservative Party is as good as dead among the vast majority of the electorate, and the Labour Party is in a similar condition except that it is still psychologically embedded in the mentality of the voters of much of the North of England and, also, most of the blacks and browns vote Labour en masse, and they are now 20% of the whole electorate, much more in the great cities.
Labour support among white people (the people formerly known as British) is no more than about 10% (at most), in reality. Maybe only 5%.
The Daily Mail’s owners, and others, now look for a party neither socialist nor national socialist/social nationalist but which may capture mass support. Reform UK.

I happened to see that one of my earliest blog posts, written almost exactly 8 years ago in January 2017, and brief, had a couple of recent hits after all these years. Still worth reading, I think.
In two minds about that. First of all, the farmers may be notionally anti-socialist, but that never stops them from accepting all the subsidies and other freebies they can get, and they are not only ungrateful for getting heavily subsidised in the first place but also constantly demand more.
On the other hand, the farmers are one of the last few bastions of Britishness. Few are black, brown, Jewish, Muslim etc.
The German people should, before all else, demand repeal of all “holocaust” “denial” laws (and similar repressive laws), which criminalize free expression, and inhibit examination of history.
Until that is done, untruth will continue to permeate German history and public life.

If you go into a shop in, say, Egypt, a small shop that in the UK (if owned by real British people) would probably have one or two people, maybe three at most, but probably one or two, working there, you will find that the owner has half a dozen people working there, probably related to him in some way. Saw two silly twits on Sky News earlier, being interviewed separately. My thoughts about him, having now heard him (I was only peripherally aware of his existence, previously) relate more to his ideas about how to fund the justice system than to his actual decisions when in high office. He wants even more cuts to the “welfare” (social security) budget, and for that money to be directed to the courts, legal professions, prisons etc. A rehash of 2010-2015 “austerity” nonsense, in short, but with money given to the legal and justice system (and defence). The reason I disagree with that (leaving aside the extra point that I never use the old and outdated “right/left” stuff) is because the original tweet fixates on the fact that FPTP voting “punishes division“. What is important is what is happening beyond the crumbling walls of the Westminster monkeyhouse.
At the 2024 General Election, over 40% of the eligible voters did not vote, many no doubt out of disgust with the whole system and the System parties.
Out of every 20 eligible voters, 8 did not vote. Only 4 out of every 20 voted for fake Labour, and probably half of those did so because a “Conservative” candidate was the only apparent alternative.
Labour’s incompetent and freeloading ministers, and its Labour Friends of Israel leading cabal, may think they are sitting pretty on their very large Commons majority but, outside the walls of Parliament itself today, 100,000 protesters were demanding the release of “Tommy Robinson”.
Robinson is “controlled opposition”, of course. So be it.
The rise of Reform UK (despite Farage’s unreliable history etc) shows anger at the way Britain is going. For Labour, and Westminster Bubble drones, to look only at numbers of seats and at the way FPTP voting distorts public opinion, is very short-sighted.
At present, it seems that, yes, Labour may be the largest party in the Commons after the next general election, but even if Reform UK fails to dislodge Labour from that position, it may well come second and thus become the Opposition. That would in itself destroy the basic structure that has been in place for over a century.
The likelihood at present (with the Con Party still embedded in some parts of the country, as are the LibDems, and both likely to get 50-100 seats next time) is a hung Parliament and thus a weak Labour minority government, though if Reform does really well, the outcome could be a fairly weak Reform government, backed up by the surviving Con MPs.
Outside the supposedly-hallowed walls of the Palace of Westminster, though, the English/British people are murmuring. The Tommy Robinson protest, the summer 2024 protests, the now-constant stream of trials of social-national people who have said or done the (politically) “wrong” things (and then been entrapped by System police, MI5, the “Clown” Prosecution Service, and the System judges) speak to underlying discontent.
Reform UK, Tommy Robinson etc, are merely part of the journey, not the destination.
There may come a time, not so far down the line, when what happens in and around Parliament becomes only the outcome of what happens outside Parliament.

As Fiona Syms (ex-wife of an ex-MP) knows well enough, Reform UK is not really a “fringe party”. It has only 5 MPs because the electoral system in this country is both grotesquely unfair and grotesquely illogical.
At GE 2024 (and in rough terms), out of every 20 eligible voters, 8 did not vote, 4 voted Labour, 3 voted Conservative, 2 voted Reform UK, 2 voted LibDem, and 1 voted Green.
If Reform UK is “a fringe party“, then so is not only the Green Party, but also the LibDems (who got 500,000 fewer votes than Reform UK), and indeed the Conservatives, who received only slightly more than 1.5x the votes cast for Reform UK. Even Labour only received just over 2.3x the Reform UK vote.

Today is a truly historic day, our relations are closer than ever ,” said Volodymyr Zelensky after signing the agreement.
Starmer said he would provide Ukraine with the necessary support “to put it in the strongest position to fight Russia in 2025.”
Starmer and his “elected” dictatorship have just stolen £2 billion a year from British pensioners, and are going, in effect, to send it to the Jewish dictator of “Ukraine”, in order to bolster his shambolic, brutal, and crumbling regime.

More pertinently, she realizes that, because the Conservative Party is on the way out, her chance of becoming Prime Minister, or indeed any kind of government minister, is vanishingly-small now.
Having said that, Suella Braverman is not particularly intelligent and, as far as I know, had a fairly mediocre Bar practice, so she might be better off trying to remain an MP— but for which party, Con or Reform?
If Suella Braverman defects to Reform and is their candidate next time at Fareham, she has a good chance of staying as MP. In 2024, she got a vote-share of 35% but Reform still did fairly well in 4th place (on 18%). She is known as having very similar views to Reform. She might well get 40% or more, maybe 50%, as a Reform UK candidate in that seat. As a Conservative Party candidate, her vote might decline to a level where Reform, or even the LibDems or Labour might succeed.
All the same, if she does defect, she would face three other serious candidates at the next election. Any one of them might win. I cannot see her standing down voluntarily from Parliament, though.

It may well be that all party politics will crumble to dust by reason of some existential catastrophe in the world, such as nuclear war, but that is another matter, arguably.

That would indicate a Lab-LibDem coalition, or some lesser concordat, Labour being about 37 short of an overall majority on those figures.

When I was about 21-y-o, I wanted to get rid of hundreds of unwanted books, mostly paperback novels (spy stories and crime thrillers etc). I gave them to the Royal Marsden because I was then living at Reigate Hill in Surrey, only about 8 or 9 miles away from the hospital’s site at Sutton (though the distance seems more because the two areas are so different). I dropped them off at the hospital reception. I hope they at least passed the time for some of the in-patients. I suppose that must have been 1977 or 1978.

Having said that, it is clear that Labour (too) is finished. What stands out there for me is how only among those 65+ years of age is voting Conservative anywhere near the level required to ground a Conservative Party government. 35%. Not very impressive anyway, but dropping to only 25% among those 50-64 y o, and to only 16% among those aged 25-49 before almost disappearing among those aged 18-24.
It might be argued that those aged below 65 y o might well change their views when they age further (just as it was said by Soviet anti-Christian propagandists in the pre-1989 period that “only old women now attend Russian Orthodox churches“, but that was countered by those who noted that there seemed always to be another generation of old women at church…).
Yes, those now aged below 65 may well be more inclined to vote Conservative when they reach 65+, but in my opinion the numbers will never be higher, or even as high, as they now are.
If the percentage of those 65+ voting Conservative is now 35% or so, by 2029 that might easily decline to 30%, and lower thereafter. The same slide might also be seen, and probably will be seen, lower down the age scale. If the present 18-24 y o generation only vote Conservative Party at around 5%, that will almost certainly increase, but maybe only slightly, over the years to come. To what extent is hard to pinpoint, but maybe by only about 5 points in each coming generation, so at age 65+ maybe to about 20%.
Admittedly speculative.
That is assuming that the present voting and political system will still be here in 2060, 2040, or even 2030. Or the present world as we know it…

Jacob Meagher is seeking ‘substantial damages’ from the world famous institution, alleging he was the subject of disability discrimination and victimisation following the failure of his law PhD.
Mr Meagher also claimed that his oral ‘viva voce’ interview, where he was questioned about his thesis by two examiners, caused ‘significant damage’ to his health.
He ended up failing the examination, meaning he missed out on a opportunity to take up a tenancy at a ‘particular set of chambers’ and therefore ‘suffered a substantial loss of anticipated earnings’.
Outlining the claim, the judge said: ‘Mr Meagher…is a student at the University of Cambridge…undertaking a PhD in law.
‘[He] did not successfully pass his final viva voce examination of his doctoral thesis.
Court documents also stated that the University’s Disability Resource Centre had recommended that at the viva, examiners follow a set of guidelines, produced as part of a Student Support Document (SSD), to help him.
These included asking specific rather than general questions, using the active, rather than the passive, voice and allowing him pauses and breaks after questions…to allow him to ‘mentally retrieve the words or information that he needed in order to answer’.“

How on Earth does that litigant think he is going to survive at the Bar (unless he does no court work at all) if he cannot endure being verbally challenged, and needs time “to mentally retrieve the words or information that he [needs] in order to answer“?
You need a thick skin at the Bar. I should know. I was a practising barrister, in court almost daily, from 1993-1996 in London (often at the High Court, as well as in County Courts and both “the mags” and, less often, Crown Courts), and during 2002-2008 based in Exeter (though travelling widely across the UK and beyond).
Being put on the spot by a judge, especially a High Court judge (I was never at the Court of Appeal or the Supreme Court), can be a chastening experience even if the judge is (as most High Court judges are) reasonably courteous.
Woe betide the barrister who is unprepared, or whose instructing solicitors have fallen down on their job. I usually managed to put up a good show, or at least a good front, but I have seen other barristers fall silent, unable to say a word, or flounder helplessly; even, in one case (in Camberwell Magistrates’ Court, before a particularly severe Stipendiary Magistrate —the people called District Judges now—) actually whimper and almost burst into tears (it was a man, too…).
At one time, a barrister who was disabled, even physically, was at a huge disadvantage in trying to get into any chambers. Now, it is arguable that things have gone to the other extreme.
When I was in provincial chambers in Exeter, from 2002-2008 , there was a girl Bar pupil from Northern Ireland. She seemed pleasant and was afterwards offered a tenancy (after which she became markedly less pleasant). The point, though, was that she had a bad speech impediment. In my opinion, the Northern Irish accent is hard enough to understand, let alone when the speaker has a speech impediment. She did get some criminal and family work, though; low-level stuff.
In the end, that Northern Irish person gave up the Bar entirely (I was told) and returned to her native Ulster. At least there they were, presumably, able to understand what she said.

A few years younger than me (I am now 68), he has died, and even years ago was looking at least a decade or more older than me, looking at photos in the newspapers.
