Reminiscences:temps perdu, and thoughts about mortality
When one is well over 60, as I now am (68; b. 1956), thoughts may naturally turn to mortality, life and death, and questions larger than the everyday concerns of life. That may be so when one notices that many people one has known in life are now defunct.
Some of the people I have known, or have merely met briefly or peripherally in the past, are still alive; many, however, are not. Some of those who are no longer alive have died from various natural causes (and are too numerous to list), others expired from unnatural causes (such as a Nigerian princess I knew, shot dead in Lagos in the late 1990s) or from causes or reasons unknown (such as the ex-husband of a lady I knew in the 1980s, which ex-husband apparently drowned in the Thames at London). A few, friends of friends rather than people I knew well, sadly died via suicide many years ago.
These thoughts came again to mind yesterday when I noticed information online to the effect that a former American colleague, a major-league American lawyer called Tim Scrantom, died some time ago, in 2021, apparently of a brain tumour. He was diagnosed in April 2021, and died 6 months later.

Tim Scrantom was a couple of months younger than me, a fact which sharpens my reminiscence.
I met Scrantom after a headhunter in New York suggested to him and his two main colleagues, in 2001, that I might suit his niche law firm (based in Charleston, South Carolina). I was telephoned in Turkey, where I was then resident, and we arranged to meet in London at one of my usual haunts, the Churchill Bar at the Hotel Russell in Russell Square.
I drove back to England via Greece, Bulgaria, Romania (the latter two then not EU states, and very ramshackle), Hungary (excellent country), Austria, Germany (calling in at Berchtesgaden), Luxembourg, and Belgium.
The upshot was that Scrantom and I became colleagues, he based mostly at Charleston (the office was at East Bay Street, in the conservation zone of the city), I mostly in London, though we both visited various offshore jurisdictions, once or twice in tandem, as when we went to Liechtenstein one day (well, I did; Scrantom had left his passport at the Mayfair Hotel, and only discovered that fact when we met at Heathrow, prior to flying to Zurich…).
Scrantom was a genial host. He invited my wife and me to dinner in Charleston in August or early September 2001 and, on a later solo visit, I visited his home on Sullivan’s Island, by Charleston, where he lived with his then wife (I believe they divorced later) and young daughter.
Scrantom, though a graduate from American law schools, an attorney in several states, and a professor of law as well, was also a barrister of Gray’s Inn in London. I was a barrister of Lincoln’s Inn, though many years later (2016) wrongfully and unlawfully disbarred at the instigation of a pack of malicious and politically-motivated Jew-Zionists.
Scrantom, incidentally, was a modest fellow, very much a “Southern gentleman”, born in Georgia and from a wealthy background. I liked him. I never knew (until yesterday) about some of his earlier adventures, such as sailing around the Bahamas on his yacht, exploring the Himalayas, or visiting edgy places in Cambodia and elsewhere in South-East Asia, though he did tell me that he knew several of the people portrayed in the famous book and film Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Midnight_in_the_Garden_of_Good_and_Evil_(film)], the events of which occurred in Savannah, Georgia, where Scrantom’s family members were largely based.
In September 2001, I was with Scrantom in a taxi in the Strand, London, when his wife called to say that New York was under attack. We interrupted our journey (to the Berkeley Square area of Mayfair) to get out at a Dixons store to look at the TV screens.
I well remember him later fuming that Iraq “must have” been behind the attack on the World Trade Center (that was the neo-con and American msm line at the time, of course) and that “Israel has the right idea” (i.e. bomb the hell out…). Well, he was wrong, of course, and we disagreed about that. Like most Americans, and despite his intelligence and education, he was influenced by the pro-Israel propaganda so pervasive in the msm in the USA (though his main colleague, Ron, a hard-driving former USAF officer, was more alive to the menace of Jew-Zionism, and he was, as one might expect, also pro-USA to the hilt).
I do not much like the concept (and Jew-Zionists in England use “litigation insurance” to pursue pro-Israel “lawfare”), so maybe it is just as well that our professional connection was mainly severed in 2002, when I decided to return to the ordinary practising Bar in England. I then moved to a large country house in Cornwall, and was based professionally at Exeter.
As already mentioned, I liked Tim (though not his then wife, to be frank; I only met her once), though I should say that he and his two main colleagues had no idea at all about how to run a law firm.
Life is short, something few if any really understand when in their twenties or thirties. We all have to try to accomplish something, not in a careerist sense, but for the future of the Earth, while in any particular incarnation.

Treatment of animals in Egypt is often very bad, and most of the people there are cowardly wastes of space.
It is interesting to note that not only do Europeans run all or almost all of the animal welfare hospitals etc in Egypt, but also most of the efforts devoted to helping the Egyptian children etc born with various handicaps. The locals (I was told when I was there for a few months in the 1990s) regard such accidents or incidents of birth as a curse from God, and so need not be addressed at all. Well, that poll (with notional LibDem vote around 12%, and Greens on 10%) would result in a Commons with 198 Lab MPs, 187 Reform, and 156 Con (51 Libdems, 27 SNP, 4 Greens). The polls are variable at present, but all tell the same story— Reform UK either the most popular party or a close second. I see the reality as being that at least a plurality of voters are absolutely sick of what Britain is becoming, and are therefore clutching at the Reform straw even though, in many cases, underwhelmed by both Reform and Farage. The voters who support Reform want to hit out at, and perhaps bury, both Lab and Con.
This should make the Runcorn and Helsby by-election even more interesting. I think and have blogged that Reform will smash it, but I concede that there are a number of factors in play. The constituency has Runcorn town as main voter pool, but even that is over 90% white, so the George Galloway vehicle, Workers’ Party, will probably come in 4th or 5th.

To guess at likely election results 4 years ahead of time is to go where the angels fear to tread, of course, but why should I stop now?!
To my mind, assuming we avoid nuclear war etc, the result of the next UK general election will be something like Reform UK 30%, Labour 25%, Con 18%, LibDems maybe 12%, Greens maybe 8%.
That would in turn result in Reform UK having 319 Commons seats (Lab 157, LibDem 60, Con 50, Greens 4 etc).
A Reform UK on the brink of an overall majority, but look at the Con Party! 50 seats, and only 4th placed behind Reform, Labour, and the LibDems. Terminal.

“Why is Britain going bankrupt and what might this mean? Let’s take a look.
First it is worth noting, Labour et al might calm the markets in the short-term but what markets are telling us is that there is a festering problem – even if this goes away in the coming weeks it will keep coming back.
There are short-term and long-term trends driving the bankruptcy; a few of the long-term trends are poor resource allocation in the public sector, aging population and low growth; short-term trends are basically COVID-19 spending and spending on energy price guarantees due to Ukraine war – also BoE’s enormous losses from QE aren’t helping.
Britain can always print money to finance its debt but the problem is that foreign debt sales keep sterling propped up which, in turn, keeps UK living standards propped up at an artificial level; if sterling were allowed fall to close the large trade deficit and Britons were forced to live within their means, living standards would be lower – probably significantly lower.
If/when the bankruptcy takes place there are basically two paths that it can take: either the government impose harsh austerity, likely by handing the reins to the OBR and the Treasury, or the country is put into receivership and the keys are handed to the IMF.
There is some talk that the IMF option is like what happened in 1976 – yes and no; in 1976 UK government debt was below 50% of GDP and while the country’s trade deficit was large it had only opened two years beforehand; today government debt is well over 100% of GDP and the trade deficit is not only enormous but has been enormous for 20 years (!).
Britain lives beyond its means by managing capital via the City of London; rather than producing goods to export the country tries to attract capital inflows sustain higher levels of consumption than the economy would naturally allow – but a serious crisis will change all this making the situation very different to 1976.
In 1976 the UK was really just trying to stabilise sterling amidst some troublesome worldwide inflationary pressures while today the country needs to be treated like the typical patient that the IMF gets its hands on.
Nor would such an austerity program even look like, say, Ireland after 2011 which was aimed at bringing down wage costs and making the country competitive again – this meant that the country went through a few years of pain and recession but then emerged with their living standards intact and started growing once more.
Rather any austerity program that is applied by Britain – whether by the IMF or by OBR-Treasury, or some combination of the three – would look more like what happened to Greece after 2011: a managed, permanent decline in living standards.“

Those backward creatures do not respect the English people involved (mother, headmaster, police inspector) for pleading and grovelling—au contraire! They despise them for their weakness.
Jesus H. Christ! No wonder English people are angry at the state of this country. They let in these backward elements from places such as Pakistan, those elements then bred prolifically, embedding themselves in many places, particularly in the north of England. Now, the English, in those areas (and later, everywhere?), are completely subject to the will or diktat of the backward.
Look at how the police bend over backward to appease the mob.
A mixture of fear and both misplaced and fake “tolerance” seems to characterize the behaviour of all the English people involved. A fake tolerance which is a virtue-signal (to the Muslim Pakistanis), saying “look at us— we abase ourselves, because we really respect you and like youand your religion”, when really their pseudo-tolerant behaviour is a fig-leaf covering up fear of the Pakistanis and what violence the Pakistani mob might inflict; if you like, cowardice.
The “multicultural” society is not working. In fact, it cannot work, except where the minorities are few in overall numbers of people. Where the “communities” are large, civil war usually results: Israel/Palestine; Lebanon; Iraq; Syria; Cyprus; Bosnia; Kosovo (etc).
I wonder how long it will be before civil war engulfs “our” so-called “multicultural society”?
This latest incident is another sign that a malign force has been allowed to grow unchecked in the UK. It has to be stopped, and MI5’s pussyfooting, and result-free “investigating”, merely deals (or fails to deal) with a symptom, not with the root cause.
Militant Islamism is not the only serious enemy of our European society in the UK; there are several others. It is, however, the most powerful in terms of control of the streets.
More arrive in the UK every single day, by routes both “legal” (“family reunion”, “fiance/fiancee visas” etc) and illegal (smuggling, rubber-boats in the Channel), and by (the biggest of all invasion routes) births to those already here.
In the end, only reasonable but firm social nationalism can save the UK and the English/British people.

It should never have been this way. There should have been, more than a year ago, elimination of the Zelensky cabal by covert and/or Spetsnaz units, followed by swift and overwhelming mass parachute landings, particularly in and around Kiev itself, those landings then reinforced and consolidated by a broad advance on and approach to Kiev by massive formations of armour and motorized infantry. As I put it a year ago, “a Blitzkrieg for the sake of mercy“, thus saving the civilian population and their companion animals from being killed, wounded and/or traumatized; also, saving their homes, and general urban infrastructure, from excessive and unnecessary damage.
The Russian Army, GRU, and governmental apparat(s) have been found wanting— hugely so. Inefficient, inept, corrupt, badly-run, you name it. Not that this is new in Russian history. Look at 1914 and 1941.

Seen in the Guardian, a reader’s letter:
“I had a checkup with my NHS dentist in May 2022. The next was scheduled for January 2023. This was postponed until April and, last week, I was told this appointment is cancelled. I now have to ring the practice in November 2023 to arrange an appointment for 2024. We currently have a Ukrainian refugee staying with us. She returned to Lviv for Christmas and saw her dentist while there. I am thinking of joining her on her next trip home as it is clearly easier to see a dentist in a war zone than it is here (Rotten, with no quick fixes: the state of our mouths reflects the plight of NHS dentistry, 2 March). So a Ukrainian “refugee”, staying with someone in Bristol, and who makes pleasant trips back to Lvov? Lvov is in western Ukraine, close to the Polish border, and has been only rarely under any attack. She goes to Lvov for Christmas, and to get dental treatment etc… Why is that person even in the UK? She is evidently not, in any sense, a “refugee”.
The Guardian-reading Bristolian virtue-signaller blithely says that he himself may go to Lvov with the “refugee” “on her next trip home“. Do these people ever wake up?
