The Bakhmut/Artyomovsk battle has become a trial of strength extremely important for the morale of both sides.
All the same, if Russian forces lose out, Russia can still step up its war operations generally in Ukraine with more destructive methods yet, in theory right the way up to nuclear ICBMs. Ukraine or Kiev-regime commanders cannot; they have no such weapons. The aim of the Kiev regime here (as also with much of the UK/US “reportage”, if it can be called that), is to dehumanize the Russian soldiers. If Russian forces can complete the encirclement of Bakhmut/Artyomovsk, they may capture thousands of Kiev-regime troops; even if the latter escape encirclement, they would be all but spent, and would have to slowly straggle northward. Whether the Russian forces could then make a big advance is, however, an open question.

It all started when, as a forfeit for losing a video game, the boy was asked by his friends to buy a copy of the Koran and bring it to school, Kettlethorpe High in Wakefield, West Yorkshire....the holy book, once inside school, became accidentally damaged, though only ‘slightly’ and not by the boy’s hands.
Nobody, certainly not the boy, could have foreseen what would happen next. He was suspended along with three other pupils; police began investigating and recorded a ‘hate’ incident; a Labour councillor stoked tensions by falsely claiming on social media that the book was desecrated; and his mother found herself pleading for forgiveness at the local mosque after his life was threatened.
The Mail on Sunday has learned that at the height of the intimidation the family received an arson threat to their home and the boy –described as ‘absolutely petrified’ – was forced to move to a secret location. After initially contacting West Yorkshire Constabulary, his mother later urged officers not to prosecute to avoid further inflaming the situation. Instead the police said they would ‘work with the school moving forward’.
One parent, herself a teacher, said it ‘feels like a medieval witch-hunt’.
The next day the pupils were suspended and, for reasons that are still unclear, the school decided to call the police, an action met with widespread disbelief from parents.

It should never have been this way. There should have been, more than a year ago, elimination of the Zelensky cabal by covert and/or Spetsnaz units, followed by swift and overwhelming mass parachute landings, particularly in and around Kiev itself, those landings then reinforced and consolidated by a broad advance on and approach to Kiev by massive formations of armour and motorized infantry. As I put it a year ago, “a Blitzkrieg for the sake of mercy“, thus saving the civilian population and their companion animals from being killed, wounded and/or traumatized; also, saving their homes, and general urban infrastructure, from excessive and unnecessary damage.
The Russian Army, GRU, and governmental apparat(s) have been found wanting— hugely so. Inefficient, inept, corrupt, badly-run, you name it. Not that this is new in Russian history. Look at 1914 and 1941.

So a Ukrainian “refugee”, staying with someone in Bristol, and who makes pleasant trips back to Lvov? Lvov is in western Ukraine, close to the Polish border, and has been only rarely under any attack. She goes to Lvov for Christmas, and to get dental treatment etc… Why is that person even in the UK? She is evidently not, in any sense, a “refugee”.
The Guardian-reading Bristolian virtue-signaller blithely says that he himself may go to Lvov with the “refugee” “on her next trip home“. Do these people ever wake up?

Like many people, I want the Conservative Party to be annihilated, certainly electorally (it’s a start, anyway) but, in our rigged binary electoral system, that does mean a massive Labour landslide, an “elected” Starmer-Labour dictatorship that might make that of Blair-Brown look mild.

I had thought that a hung Parliament might be the best result in 2024 (if that is when the next general election comes), but now I think that the only way is to kill off 90% of the Conservative Party seats, even if at the expense of a huge Labour Party majority in the Commons.

What will be the next step in the UK? An end to elections, because of (maybe) a faked-up “crisis” involving “Ukraine”, together with some new Chinese virus supposedly about to kill us all?
That might be the excuse to cancel the next general election, and to form a pseudo “National Government” of, mainly, Labour and Conservative Party drones. The digital microchip “passport” will not be brought in at once, by force, but slowly. Those who do not submit to it will gradually be squeezed out of foreign travel, then most domestic travel, then most State benefits and pensions, then any banking.
The few who keep on fighting will eventually, over several years, be marginalized, unable to travel, stay in hotels, play the lottery, have bank accounts, have jobs (any but the low-level, off-grid and paid-in-kind type of work). They will be unable to vote (for what that is worth), unable to have internet access, unable to access NHS services or other medical and dental services.
Not being able to function in mainstream society, they will inevitably fall foul of repressive laws, and will find even shelter and food hard to access, and so quite likely end up being detained in prison, or in camps disguised as “open prisons”.

My view as an outsider is that, in eastern Ukraine overall, and as far as one can see, there is no “Ukrainian” or Kiev-regime defence in depth, just a long long front with a belt of Kiev-regime forces along it, and then embedded defences within individual cities such as Kiev, Kharkov, Odessa etc.
If the Russian forces can break through that front and/or encircle elements of the Ukrainian defence line formations, they might be able to power on through eastern Ukraine to the Kiev area facing little heavy opposition.
For that, the Russians will need numbers, armour, transport, and air cover.

The whole idea that people should pay a compulsory “licence fee” (tax), not even for the BBC as such but for simply owning a TV, is completely unjust and also completely antiquated; I had thought it a hangover from the 1950s or even 1930s, but in fact it was introduced (for radio) in 1923! Here we are, a whole century later, and this nonsense still exists (for TV; the radio version was scrapped around 1980).
What does the BBC offer that is different from, let alone better than, other providers? Most of its drama and other offerings are full of politically-correct and tendentious rubbish, and its news broadcastings are System propaganda as boring as Soviet TV. It pays newsreaders half a million a year, and a loudmouth ignoramus ex-football player (Gary Lineker) as much as two million a year. Why? Why does it do that, and why is the public taxed via this “licence fee” (enforced heavily) for something so poor?
In the past, the BBC might claim, at least with some limited credibility (in the 1960s, 1970s) that it offered an, overall, more elevated cultural level than commercial stations (at the time one a couple existed in the UK, of course). That is now certainly not credible. BBC 2 has been very dumbed down over the years, and the only BBC TV channel on a consistently-high cultural level, BBC Four, is going to be closed within a few years.
The licence fee has to be ended, starting with the criminal-law sanctions. The BBC has to have its rice bowl taken away.
Incidentally, I had a now-deceased friend, the Russian language and literature lecturer and translator, and Dostoyevsky expert, Ig Avsey (a good fellow, about whom I have blogged a couple of times), who had a long-running battle with the TV licensing nuisances.
In fact, Ig was a genuine non-licence-needer, in that he actually did have no TV in his house, though he had one in a garden shed, which TV he used solely to watch obscure Russian films and other material, such as Smoktunovsky’s famous “Gamlet” [Hamlet]. I have no idea why the TV was in the shed and not the house. Ig was a considerable eccentric.
After it was realized that Ig had never had a licence, a long correspondence with the licence-enforcers ensued, which lasted for something like 20 years or longer, but he never paid for a “licence”, and (in law) never had to (as far as I know, that TV was not able to receive broadcasts at all).
This whole nonsense of a “licence fee” is just ludicrously out of date.

We may be a great deal closer to nuclear war than most of us believe, or want to believe. It could mean the end of several hundred years of a certain history and way of life— or worse.
I doubt that many people in the UK would survive such a conflict, Britain being relatively small, yet having a number of high-value targets situated on its territory: ports, air bases, early-warning stations, submarine bases etc. As someone who lives only 15 miles or so from a major port (Southampton), I myself would quite likely perish, along with most of the rest of the British people.

Well, a poor result this week, both for me and for political journalist John Rentoul— we both scored only 3/10. I did get the answers to questions 3, 4, and 9, arguably the easiest ones. John Rentoul got the same questions right that I got right.
I thought that I had question 1 nailed with “boudin“, but (I think) it turns out that that is a different kind of sausage. Not sure. If “boudin“ is the right answer, then I scored 4/10. [update: just saw the official answers, and the right answer for that question is not boudin, so a mere 3/10 it is, one of my worst results on this weekly quiz].
Now it turns out that the kind of tendentious idiots they employ have compiled a list of books, films, and TV series which “might interest the [so-called] “far-right”:

Works by some of the world’s greatest writers were included as examples of warning signs of potential extremism, including Shakespeare, Chaucer, Milton, Tennyson, Kipling and Edmund Burke.
It almost seems like a joke.
The report even highlighted the BBC’s 1990s political thriller House Of Cards, John le Carre’s seminal spy trilogy Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, and Sharpe, the ITV drama set in the Napoleonic wars.
Inexplicably, it said the BBC’s Great British Railway Journeys, presented by former Conservative minister Michael Portillo, was of interest to the far-Right.
Historian and broadcaster Andrew Roberts said: ‘This is truly extraordinary. This is the reading list of anyone who wants a civilised, liberal, cultured education.
Author Douglas Murray obtained the full list and discovered that one of his books had been given a red flag by Prevent.
Mr Murray wrote in The Spectator magazine: ‘A number of books are singled out, the possession or reading of which could point to severe wrongthink and therefore potential radicalisation… It seems that RICU is so far off-track that it believes that books identifying the problem that it was itself set up to tackle are in fact a part of the problem.’ He concluded that RICU’s work was ‘pathetic’ and called for ‘accountability’ for its errors and ‘sackings by the score’.
The list has emerged following a major review into the Prevent scheme by William Shawcross.
His report, published earlier this month, exposed serious failings in Prevent, warning that it applies a ‘double standard’ to Islamist and far-Right threats. The £49million-a-year scheme had prioritised countering far-Right activity above tackling the prime Islamist threat, it added.
The report said Prevent had scrutinised Right-wing material which ‘falls well short of the extremism threshold altogether’.“

I should be prepared to bet that the mix of staff at “Prevent” includes dim types harvested from police and military “intelligence” rejects or retirees, probably quite a few embittered Asians or half-castes of the Neil Basu type and, very likely, Jews.

Part of the reason is simply that there are relatively few “working-class” jobs now. As blogged previously, in the UK, the old “proletariat” has been replaced —to a large extent— by both the “precariat” (people in unstable, shifting employment, and with periods of unemployment), and/or by a contemporary form of “lumpenproletariat” (the raceless, cultureless masses whose world revolves around trash TV, trash “music”, “selfies”, drugs, drink, cars, and State benefits).

It makes me laugh that scribblers and MPs write much about the almost meaningless “right/left” labels, and occasionally about “antisemitism” (always from the viewpoint that it is, supposedly, “bad”), but rarely directly about the Jewish influence that now more than influences (put shortly, controls) the two main System parties.

Not that the matter will ever be put to the actual Ukrainian people (beyond opinion polling). The regime of the Jew dictator Zelensky has shut down opposition parties, arrested the leaders and supporters of the same, and also banned trade unions and other organizations. His government may be, and is, a shambolic, kleptocratic mess, but when it comes to repressing political dissent it is efficient enough.

That of course is the problem faced by political leaders of any kind. They cannot be expert in all the fields over which their imprimatur is decisive, so it comes down to which “experts” or “specialists” they trust, unless their decisions are to be completely arbitrary in nature.
A political leader must inevitably always be a generalist, though he (or she) may be expert in one or two fields (eg Margaret Thatcher, a chemist who was also a tax barrister). However, what about all the other areas of policy, such as education, railways, military hardware, grand strategy, waste disposal and the general environment, intelligence and security etc?
You see all of that in the decisions of Adolf Hitler, among many others.
Hitler was, or became, fairly expert in some areas of military policy and strategy, and also knew much about art, architecture, and more academic fields such as history, religion and philosophy. In some other areas of policy or knowledge, he knew not much, yet had to decide upon them, a problem made worse by the structural constraints of the National Socialist state, meaning fuhrerprinzip or autocracy. The leader had to decide.
These factors affect the UK as well, for example at present. We have people who are pretty ignorant at the top (e.g. the recent Prime Ministers), and yet they have to decide high policy affecting diverse matters such as foreign policy, military and NHS procurement, law and order, freedom of expression, intelligence and security, transport etc.
There is no one answer, but having MPs, ministers, and prime ministers who are not such stupid deadheads as “Boris”-idiot, Liz Truss, Woollyhead Trussbanger (Kwasi Kwarteng), Therese Coffey etc would help.
