Interesting. The fact is that a “degree” is now scarcely worth anything, now that a. about half the under-40 population has one, and b. award inflation has devalued degrees at all award-levels. Now the salary of a train driver is actually about the same as an airline pilot at entry-level, and can reach £80,000 for some, depending on a number of factors such as overtime worked, but few if any can get higher than that.

What that poll, like others over the past year, shows, is that the voters are not only sick of the “two main parties”, but determined to stamp on them.
The Caerphilly by-election was niche, in that it was for the Welsh Senedd, not Westminster. Nonetheless, we see where Labour and Con ended up— 11% and 2% respectively. Yes, Reform got “only” second place and 36% to Plaid’s 47%, but that was in a very traditional Welsh and formerly Labour stronghold.
Caerphilly was a Senedd by-election. Also, Plaid had the advantage of a candidate who has been a local councillor in the same area for 50 years.
Part of the Plaid vote was obviously tactical, voters in a close contest voting Plaid to stop Reform.

Perhaps so, though I would say at about 35% rather than high-20s. People, mainly white English people, want to stamp on fake Labour, and on the fake Conservatives. Voting for Reform is the method of doing that. Beyond that, the Reform surge is a desperate longing for social nationalism, but that longing is unarticulated, unexpressed directly. People want a better life, a future. They know what Mosley called “the old parties” cannot give that to them. They are by no means sure that Reform can, either, so are voting Reform to hit out at this failing society and its decadent exploitative pseudo-democratic and (((occupied))) parties, and as a signal that the people want better.
Once Reform tries and fails, people will be ready to look elsewhere.
It may be asked why only (at best) 36% of people are doing all that via voting Reform. The answer is, first of all, that there is huge apathy (less than 60% even voted in 2024).
Secondly, many dislike Reform’s almost hysterical pro-Jewish lobby, pro-Israel, agenda.
Third, many dislike Reform having many non-white candidates and officers.
Fourthly, many dislike the American-style fake “libertarianism” of Farage, Tice etc, the worship of finance-capitalism etc.
Fifthly, of course, 20% of the whole UK population is now non-white anyway, and unlikely (most of them) to support anything of a national character, even something as underwhelming as Reform.
There is a sixth point. Yes, Reform wants to “stop the boats”, i.e. the (?) 5% of immigration which is in the character of a migration invasion; it says little or nothing about the remaining (?) 95%; neither is there any clear plan about how to get rid of even the illegals. People see that gap between expressed policy and likely implementation, or lack of it.
Of course, Tom Newton-Dunn fails to add the obvious point— if Reform is not doing well and is on “only” 27%, how much worse are the Lab/Con parties (two sides of one party) doing, on 17% each?
The “Con Party” is lower than irrelevant now. 2% at Caerphilly, as low as 15% in some national opinion polls, and not unlikely to be around 10% by the time GE 2028/2029 comes around, bearing in mind the advanced age of most Con voters now.

The irrelevance of the Conservative Party is plainly seen there. Despite Starmer-stein having a disapproval rating of 60%, and Kemi Badenoch having one of “only” 35%, when it comes to positive approval, the two are both down in the trough of public esteem: Starmer 23%, Kemi Badenoch 24%. Indeed, fewer people actively disapprove of Kemi Badenoch (35%) than disapprove of Farage (41%), but when it comes to positive approval, Farage, on 37%, easily outpaces Kemi Badenoch’s 24%.

Quite simple. 14 years of total maladministration and misgovernment finished the Conservative Party with most of the electorate, though 3 out of every 12 voters who voted (3 out of every 20 eligible) still voted Con in 2024 (Labour had 4 out of 20 or 4 out of 12). Most of those Con voters were over 60 years of age, many over 80. They have mostly now gone to Reform UK, and many are expiring daily by reason of old age etc. The next general election may not be until 2029; how many habitual Con voters will have expired by then?

Short-sighted Con voters in some parts of England have, in the past couple of decades, shown themselves willing, in my view very wrongly, to vote for non-Europeans such as Kemi Badenoch as their constituency MP, so long as the right party label is affixed. I once stayed overnight at Mappin’s hotel, a Victorian castle hotel at Tintagel, North Cornwall, the one-time seat of King Arthur. In late 2001; December 2001. It was not really run properly as “an hotel” should be; I believe that, since then, it has been taken in hand by Mappin, the heir to a very considerable fortune (think Mappin & Webb, the jewellers). I just read today that he bought it in 1999.
When I was there, it was hugely atmospheric, like a decayed private castle, an effect emphasized by the fact that my wife and I were the only guests, and the staff, in the evening at least, consisted of a not terribly welcoming middleaged Englishman and his (possibly Austrian) wife. I recall that our rather cold room (I think it may have had a four-poster, and an ancient bar fire set into the wall) cost £200 a night, quite expensive in the money of 24 years ago. Akin maybe to £400+ today.
I well recall, after eating informally at a local pub in the nearby village (no restaurant open then at the Castle), being seated before a Hollywood-film-scale blazing fire in the Great Hall, and being served a double or triple Irish whiskey, the absence of other guests making it seem as if we were in our own home (or castle).
In the morning, a very pleasant and very rickety old retainer-woman served breakfast in a long gallery, her tiny grandchild hanging onto her skirts, as the Cornish winter waves crashed onto the rocks below, as in Rebecca.

Ah. Interesting. Looks as though the numbers of alleged victims have been edited down. I thought that the Jews/Israelis were still claiming that about 1,000, or even 1,500, had been killed. Seems that (as happened at the “reconstructed” site of the early 1940s Auschwitz camp, where a “4 million victims” sign was officially altered to about a quarter of that figure), the 1,500 supposedly killed by Palestinian Arabs in southern Israel in 2023 is now 378, at least at the festival itself. The other hundreds of victims, if they existed at all, were presumably killed by the brutal Israeli armed forces themselves as “collateral damage”.
None of that, though, explains how the Israeli Jews (and those supporting them in the UK and elsewhere) think that the deaths of 378 Jews etc by a particular paramilitary/political group somehow justifies the killing by Israeli Jewish forces of anything up to 200,000 Palestinian Arabs, mostly civilian, mostly women and children (about half of the victims being under 18 years of age). Re. Labour’s recent supposed “stunning victory” in the recent Hamilton by-election (Scottish Parliament): when you look at the figures, Labour won but with only 31.6% of the vote. The SNP vote fell markedly (unsurprisingly) to 29.4%, and Reform UK, which had not previously put up a candidate in the constituency, came in a close third, with 26.1%; all three main candidates were within a band of 1,400 votes.
The Conservative Party got only 6%, a huge fall from its previous vote, and the six other candidates (including the LibDem) lost their deposits.
This was a pretty good performance by Reform. They may well succeed next time. Until now, Scotland has been a barren field for broadly British nationalist parties, so the result is an interesting straw in the wind.
